    Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as complicated as you might think. In this video, he shares tips about caring for a Savannah monitor.
    When it comes to pet lizards, oftentimes people are interested in monitor lizards. The whole family of monitors predominantly are large meat eaters. And one that is very, very popular is the Savannah monitor. Here I have just a couple of babies newly hatched that are in the insect eating stage, but very quickly they move on to any kind of meat.
    These are animals that will easily take a mouse or a rat, but they're also fond of table scraps, cat food, dog food, making them really easy to take care of. If there is a problem with them in captivity is that they're such voracious eaters that people love to watch them eat, they get overfed. Like most reptiles they have a very slow metabolism and don't need as much food as we do. Snakes, for example, could eat only once a week and they're fine, they're not like mammals like us that eat three to six times day.
    So, people tends to put too much food in front of Savannah's monitors, and oftentimes I'll see adult animals that are truly obese, which usually is not good for the long-term health of the animal.
    But they are one of the more popular monitors in that they become very, very docile very quickly. With handling, they realize that you are not a threat to them, and they don't therefore bite when being picked up like some other lizards do. They get tremendous size though, very, very heavy, and up to 5 feet maximum from tip of the nose to tip of the tail. So, there is definitely a "Wow, I got a pet dinosaur," factor to owning a Savannah monitor. You've just got to be prepared for the amount of food it's going to eat, and the enclosure size it's going to need.
    There are very few fish tanks commercially on the market that are going to house an adult Savannah monitor, you're going to have to probably build something yourself in order to keep this animal happy. They like to be above ground and bask and forage, but like many big bodied lizards, they like to go underneath the ground to cool off, so they can thermoregulate their body temperature.
    But they do make great long term captives. They can live upwards of 20, 25 years, and again, it's the girth and the size of them that's the attraction to people to get a Savannah monitor.

    I'm here to learn more about monitors because i might get one in the future... but I have a feeling that it's a bad idea to feed them dog food...

      pelon198712 it is if you dont know what you are doing. You would use a canned wet food from the natural food sections and you would not feed from the can.

      I ended up getting a blue tongue skink (it's awesome!) and I feed it canned wet dog food which is that the breeders recommended. There's certain meats that are healthy for it. Anyway, the guy just didn't specify I guess

      +NC Nature News What you should do is balance out your diet (also, if you get it as a hatchling it would be more squirmy but easier to time). You should feed it mice and rats but not too much because they are high in fat but low in protein. Feed them eggs (boiled, scrambled, hard-boiled) they love it. Also, feed it raw meat such as raw steak or turkey.

    'Easy to take care of' and 'savannah monitors' should never be in the same sentence. These lizards need a 6x6 enclosure at minimum, and they need healthy whole prey items, not "table scraps".

    There's a debate that you can feed savannah monitor on rodents as a staple as long as the temps, humidty & caging is on point. A lot of people have success with this as long as they know exactly what they're doing.

  • @IamtheKGB
    @IamtheKGB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    some bad info, theyre not easy to care for. big lizards need big cages, monitors especially since they are more active than other reptiles, and big cages are harder to maintain the right temps and humidity. not to mention the heavy load of substrate that needs to be changed and replaced. I dont give my dogs dog food and wouldnt give it to a lizard.

    • @alexcrowder1673
      @alexcrowder1673 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IamtheKGB I completely agree. The only pre-made pet food I'd give to a monitor is organic raw cat food. It's literally 100% ground whole animal. It's got the skin, tendons, bones, organs, meat, everything still in it. Of course variety is always key. There are no staples to my monitors diet because in my opinion nothing is healthy enough on it's own to be fed exclusively. Anything he eats makes up a maximum of 20% of his diet.

    I have to disgree with this video. The only dog or cat food they should eat is organic raw cat food. But only the stuff that's 100% ground up whole animal with the tendons and bones, organs etc. Even then variety is key so I always switch up what I feed them as frequently as possible. Its also important to supplement anything without bone. Dog food though should literally never be fed to a monitor because Monitors are carnivorous and dogs are omnivorous. Obviously they can't eat the same food. Monitors don't eat grains and vegetation.

      feed them roaches and crickets 70% animal protein 20% eggs 10% and plants 10%
      also they must be able to borrow ( foot of eco earth on top 2 feet of soil on bottom) and need a basking spot at least 105°f

    • @alexcrowder1673

      Nick Harrell I wouldn't feed them ANY plant matter. They shouldn't even have any interest in vegetation. They can however eat organic raw cat food. It's 100% ground up whole animal. Its got bones, tendons, organs, everything. It shouldn't be fed exclusively but it is OK for them every once in awhile.

    This is wrong wrong wrong! I truly hope nobody takes this "advice" as being true because it is deadly. Whole prey items, no table scraps or dogfood. Dogfood is for dogs, not reptiles. They are not easy to care for, and require a huge cage preferably over 8ft long and 5ft wide at least. Bigger the better, do more research.

    • @zenith7996
      @zenith7996 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rodents should only be fed very occasionally, they are very fatty and savannah monitors tend to live longer without any rodents in captivity, and why do you feed them rodents anyway? They don’t care about the taste of rodents, nor if they look tasty, why risk it even? One rodent a month might not hurt but there is no point of it

      2-Don't overfeed them.(0:34 to 1:03)
      3-Handle them consistently so that they could become docile towards you. (1:07 to 1:17)
      4-They require big space so build a cage for them. (1:35 to 1:45)
      5-Make sure that they are able to go underground in their enclosure to regulate their temperature.(1:47 to 1:55)
