- Charles, a male Great Horned Owl, gets mobbed by an American Robin with a fly-by, warning calls and a full on body impact attack! Mobbing is a fascinating set of behaviors used by potential prey animals to alert others to the predator's presence, call out and harass the predator, distract the predator from the potential prey's vulnerable young and to teach the young about the very real dangers poised by the predators. Looking and listening for mobbing behaviors is a great way to find predators whether they are owls, hawks, snakes or your neighbor's cat.
I have been observing, documenting and doing outreach with Charles, his mates and their owlets since December 2005 in Forest Park; a large urban park in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.
