Male Great Horned Owl Grooms and Stretches, 10/31/2024 in Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri, USA
Charles, a male Great Horned Owl, grooms and stretches by first doing The Fluff Up to help clean and align his feathers as he wakes up. I had studied and researched owls for many years before I learned that this shaking of the feathers, which all birds do, is called rousing. In lieu of that knowledge I came up with The Fluff Up, which I think is much more evocative and descriptive. :) He then does a stretch called The Escalator Stretch which involves stretching one wing and on the same side of the body, the leg and toes. Stretching and grooming or preening are important activities as wakes up and prepares for a night of hunting.
I have been observing, documenting and doing outreach with Charles, his mates and their owlets since December 2005 in Forest Park; a large urban park in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. Worse cameraman ever??
What a beautiful sight! The heavy snowfall ambiance mixed with that signature hoot makes for a wonderful backdrop. That had to have been a night to cherish in person.
Thank you! Well said-it was an amazing night especially as this male, Charles, mated with his then mate, Samantha, a few minutes after this! :)

Do they mainly fly at night? Maybe just for hunting?
Yes, they mostly fly and are otherwise active mostly at night. They can and will fly during the day if they need to do so.

I can't get my barred owls to stop doing that and it's August damn near the end of August LOL
You are most likely just hearing them duet. It is too early for them to be mating just now.
@@markglenshaw that is exactly what I was thinking at first but however I watched them actually consummate more than five times the last couple night if not more by far
@@markglenshaw however I do know that they will do it if they lost part of their brood or all.... maybe they're just practicing LOL I really don't know I'm still learning a lot about bird of prey
@@markglenshaw thank you for your post n reply 🙏 🦉 ❤
@@crystalcurtis3176 Were you able to film them mating? How clearly did you see them mate?
I am here in Oakville, and we have beautiful Barred 🦉 owls.. i love them, actually imprinted with one the last broods fledglings and he comes to see me all the time now... Lol My absolute favorite is the Great horned and I finally got to hear them calling for the first time last night amazing beautiful creatures.
Thanks, Crystal. That's fantastic about the owls you are observing in Oakville! Can you tell me more about the Barred Owl that imprinted on you? How did this happen? Congratulations on hearing Great Horned Owls for the first time. Their hoots are especially gorgeous! :)
@@markglenshaw sorry for the delayed response there is two times when he was first I had to help him get back in the tree and then there was a really bad Rainstorm you cstvþfŕđ6ŕ⁵and 600.00 back up off the ground should I put them in a dry spot for a little bit and made sure he was taken care of
@@crystalcurtis3176 Thanks, Crystal. That's cool that you helped out but it's okay if they are on the ground even in the rain. The parents will keep a good eye on them. Your contact with the owlet sounds too brief for it to imprint on you.
I understand what you're saying I have to talk text to do this so not everything's come out exactly how I want.. i have had him land on me numerous times and helps him out as well helping him out with when he was still branching and since then he has had couple issues and honestly I want him to be very cautious of humans is not all humans are as nice... either way he will come down to me now and land or sit next to me. I definitely pay LOTS of attention to him but not as much physical and i dnt feed ... as much as id love to the Elmyra from the cartoon and love him and hug him squeeze him and yada yada yada... I guess maybe I'm not saying the right terminology, and maybe it's not an imprint it's just the lady from the wild Bird Rehab sanctuary and I were speaking about it.. i guess he just knows i am safe.. dunno. . They are ever a big learning experience..
I wish my words come out better

This is Charles. I have been studying him since December 2005. :)
Cool video of an awesome bird!

Nothing even happened
Much happened but very fast and in very little time. A Great Blue Heron flies from the left of the screen and a male Great Horned Owl pursues the heron. The owl breaks off the attack and flies to the left. The heron, wanting to ensure its safety, breaks off sharply down and to the left.

Hello there, Mr. Charles!
Gorgeous boy!
Thank you! I am biased but this owl, Charles, is an especially gorgeous Great horned Owl! :)
Was it a rabbit?
No, it was a bird. Quite likely an American Robin.
Doesn't look too perturbed.
Beautiful video of Charles, Mark!
Many thanks, Pam!
Lots of hooting in Collinsville last night... it was wonderful :)
Glad to hear it, Sue! What owls species did you hear?
This weekend, the GHOs at about 4am. Last weekend barred owls were on the prowl, about 10pm :)
Wow! What a beautiful sight.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed Charles and his beauty! :)
Very cool!!
It's all about the ambush....
That is often the case but in this one this where the owl was sleeping and there is a squirrel nest in that same tree only a few feet away. I regularly see such encounters even when the tree does not have a squirrel nest in it. Fascinating to see and sometimes the squirrels charge the owls right out of the tree!
@@markglenshaw yeah same here. With red tails too. They know when it's game on, they're smart little guys
@@carlobrigante4764 Well said!
Maybe an Eagle. Could finish off a raccoon. Maybe. The only eagles. That may do it. A Harpy 100 percent. Phillipine. 80 percent. Golden. 60.percent. Percent meaning success fully kill raccoon. Raccoons have survived multiple dog attacks. Tough animals
Large eagle species could likely take a Raccoon but Great Horned Owls are well-documented eating Raccoons. I have been studying these owls for over 13 years.
Amazing. Such a beautiful owl.
