    This video was really helpful and reassuring because you went to the school I chose to attend through gogonihon. My mom has been really unsupportive and putting me down about the finances and medical stuff of moving to Japan and knowing the area is cheap and was a fun experience really helps. Thank you so much.
    I would also like to see a video about what the accommodations were like and getting a job! 💓 keep being awesome Mikan

    Your language school sounds so amazing!! I'm doing Japanese at uni in England and I TOTALLY get what you mean about feeling like you're not really learning anything. My first year just finished and we learnt 120 kanji in class which is basically nothing really so I've been teaching myself some. I'm waiting for my year abroad where I feel like I can actually learn!!

    I'm studying Japanese for 3 years now and I feel you girl, it takes a lot of time and effort and you still feel like you know nothing. I went to study in Japan for 3 weeks and my Chinese friends were studying Japanese for 3 years as well, but they were in the highest level while I was at the lowest xD All this to say, let's do our very best and feel proud of it, the important thing is to never give up ^^

  • @Jojo-uu7ot
    @Jojo-uu7ot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    I totally agree on what you said about how long it actually takes to learn japanese if you're from a western country. I'm from Sweden and I spent approx 1 year in Korea, and I studied korean for 3 (!!!) years before I even moved there. But as soon as I arrived I was so overwhelmed because I couldn't talk to people or even understand what they were saying.... But within 6 months I moved up to level 4, which also meant that I could apply for a Korean university the term after if I wanted to, though I chose to move back to Sweden hah.

    • @yunamchoi2788
      @yunamchoi2788 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's quite late but i'm curious about your story
      so i'm Korean and in my uni i used to see lots of foreign students who literally cannot talk in Korean and i thought the reason is the low level of language acceptance condition
      Around level 4 to 5, how much able to understand korean conversation? can you just understand some of the words only or guess some context?

    I regret so much not going to japan and study when I had the opportunity to after high school.
    And now it feels like it's to late. I have studied at university for 4 years to be a preschool teacher and worked now 5 years as a preschool teacher. I live in an apartment with my partner and we are planing to move to a bigger place (maybe even buying instead of renting) next summer. And we want to be parents too. I'm 29 and feel like there is so much I want to do but that time just isn't on my side anymore. So for all you young people out there, if you ever have the opportunity to study in another country, DO IT! Or you might end up like me and regretting it.

      I feel the same way! I really feel like I wasted my youth :( I'm 28 now and working on my immigration to Canada to be with my boyfriend (I'm American) but I really would love to study in Japan and so does my boyfriend. At the same time tho I want to have a baby before I'm too old to have one but saving for this is really difficult :(

      Holy crap are you me? This is crazy. Yeah it's tough being a female because we have to get our lives together a bit faster. I studied in College for........wait for it......SEVEN YEARS. and I don't even LIKE my degree enough to get a job in it, and I don't even have a relationship that I see lasting well enough to make a marriage out of it.
      Yeah if you are 15 or even 13 years old START RESEARCHING NOW exactly what language school, or japanese trade school, or japanese university you want to go to! once you're past maybe 26 or 27 things start getting a lot harder in terms of trying to get every life goal you want to get. This isn't to put down my fellow 29 year olds or to put pressure on peole who are only 16, or 15 years old, its to encourage you to go after your dream.

    I really like the idea of making a video on different situations you know of, in which people have come to Japan!! I feel like I too often hear only about the "traditional" route (e.g. going to a language school, possibly a university, or becoming qualified to teach English) but not so much about other situations people have fallen into.. I've been learning Japanese for five years now and for the first 3 years, I barely learned anything aside from hiragana, katakana. Then I got a new teacher, who was a native speaker and she pushed us so hard and I've learnt so much more stuff like Kanji, sentence structures and practical application instead of just speaking about foods and breakfast in hypothetical situations. Also, my other teachers were absolutely lovely, but my teacher is literally like everyone's mum or a fun aunt. She gives the best advice and brings us healthy snacks when we're stressed! She even booked a time for us to leave school so we can all go out to a traditional Japanese restaurant.

    Thanks so much for the video, Mikan. Professionals might be o.k. at passing information but listening to them usually sends my brain in to a process of slow fermentation, (knew I could shoehorn it in somewhere) and I go to sleep with my makeup on. I prefer my bunf delivered sweet, vibrant and alive - you sure you just woke up? Wish I looked that good and dished it that well after a nap. Liking what you say about teachers with superpowers btw. They leave such a positive mark and change your direction radically. You never forget them. I look to you for “front line” info, Mikan and you always deliver in a way that is interesting and awake! Loving you cute-star. Please keep producing. Maxine. “Thejustpixie.” xxx

    I somewhat relate with your language school experience. I studied Japanese for two years but it was very broken since I studied it at uni for a term then had to wait a year to study it again (self taught myself for that year). When I got to study abroad for a 3 week summer programme I found out I learned way more than what I did at university. Sadly I found out while I was in Japan that I failed university... It's been a year since then and I am curious about going to a language school then doing the small programs in the UK here

    It’s true that it’s easier for Chinese and Korean speakers!!! Kanji is so much easier since it’s basically Chinese. The pronunciation is different but you get the general idea of what the word is if you’re fluent in Chinese!

    Thanks for this video! Super informative! ^-^ I desperately wish I could go to language school :( Unfortunately right now, I'm working as a teacher full time on an instructor visa, so I can't enroll in any classes. I do go to tutoring twice a week and study on my own, by I truly feel like having a year of classes to give me "the ropes" as you were saying would make it so much easier to self-study later on. Maybe, if I save up enough money and get some sort of side job, I can switch visas and do language school for a while. We'll see.

    I just found this video and that's actually the school I've been considering going to! But I was told the fast course was mostly filled with Chinese students for example, because they're already used to the kanji system in a way, and it might be too hard for someone who's not used to them. Would the "slow" course really be too slow? I personally really want to learn Japanese to get to an advanced level, so if by the end of one year in the slow course, I'm barely reaching intermediate... Do you know by any chance how you'll evolve in just that level?
