- From Gothic Lolitas to Yoyogi Rockabillies, the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku is a wellspring of some of the world's most unique and extreme fashion trends. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits.
One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free.
In the first episode of our new documentary series, Style Out There, our host Asha Leo travels to Harajuku to meet with street fashion superstars, like 90884 designer Kurebayashi, Junnyan, and Shoichi Aoki, the founder of FRUiTS magazine, to peel back the rainbow-colored stickers and uncover the depth behind Decora.

Japan is a society which thrives off of conformity. They have certain ways in which people must act and just lingering a bit off the mainstream standard can get people seriously looked down on. So yeah we all come from countries where being different is accepted but they don’t. So doing documentaries like this can really help Japan and East Asia get out of their conformity shell
Honestly so many interviewers documenting on foreign countries are guilty of this. They have such a way of othering these people. When really, if someone was dressed in Decora fashion on the street in a Western country, they'd definitely get some weird looks thrown at them. Always with that "Oh, it's the land of conformity, compared to us who are all about individuality" yeah, sure. As if people don't have specific office attire in the West, as if most women don't do their makeup pretty much the same way in the West, as if trends hundreds if not thousands of people follow don't exist in the West. Uniqueness is a myth.

ive always loved harajuku style but have never been able to express it due to strict parents however ive been able to express myself in this way lately as ive turned 17 and am now getting my own money. makes me happy seeing this style more recognised and appreciated. i really think everyone should dress how they want, without thought of 'will my boyfriend like this?' 'will others judge me?' and just wear what gives them happy chemicals :)) and for those of you wanting to try this style but are too afraid of judgement, i dress like this and i live in a very normal area yet i get so many compliments daily even from old women and such. so i highly recommend just going for it! dont dress to please others, dress to please yourself

Amazingly said! I live in florida and I have never had a negative experience wearing decora or any other j fashion. Although I do understand why people would be afraid to wear j-fashion because of possible bad experiences they could have, I think it’s important to consider the kind of area you’re in.
This makes me think of how going from having to wear strict uniforms in high school to art school has been so eye opening to how it’s okay to express yourself however you want to. It’s so fun seeing so many different styles in one place and having no one care if what you wear is different

I've loved wearing dark colors for a bit but I realized that even though I liked it, something was missing. About a month ago I started adding bright accessories as I increased the number of them and now I associate myself more with decora than I do gothic
It seems more happy and when you approach someone with the bright colors and happy demeanor it’s not as off putting as goth seems to be.

I love how they put their emotions and feelings into their outfits. They wear colorful things that go well together and feel happy because of it. It’s really beautifal to me to see them smiling because they know they are dressed as how they want. This shows that they not just have confidence, but a free spirit.

i was a 4th grade the first time i saw it and after started drawing like this (or at least i tried) a got bullied like hell for it but i also was bullied when i didn't dress that way so who cares, in middle school i moved a lot away from decora and started dressing more gothic lolita and then just alt punk time stuff. now I'm starting high school this year, a lot has changed and i no long dress in Decora but i still have all my hairpins. now in days i dress more weirdcore/Cryptidcore but is till love Decora. though Decora i found out about anime and then animation which is my favorite hobby today. pretty much everything I'm into now in days started in Decora, it changed my life and made me who i am

I like how the interviewer was nice and nonjudgmental. Especially with her being non-Japanese. I like Harajuku myself, like the aesthetics with pastel colors. I'm very diverse when it comes to certain color themes though

I can relate. LOVE a mix of pastels and brights with a girlish style and accessories. I also like retro 60s-70s boho, and others styles.
There seem to be sooo many comments in the comment section saying something along the lines of "I love the style and wanna dress this way, but I'm afraid to because it's not socially acceptable here". I think that's really sad how society's expectations and hostility towards anything different keeps people from expressing themselves freely.

I remember watching this video so long ago and just recently got the courage to wear decora and the first time I wore decora I thought I'd have this crazy revelation or would burst out into some crazy emotions but I just felt like me and that was the best feeling It feels so natural

My mom didn't like going out in public with me at first, she would make me change before we left because she didn't want people to think I was crazy. Now she doesn't care, but she does try to defend me when she hears someone said something. I tell her I don't care, because I'm not trying to impress anyone but myself. It is something someone has to get used to though.

I'm glad that they specified that it isn't hiding behind a mask or a costume. When ever anyone is wearing alt clothes there not hiding behind it, it's the opposite. It's letting go of hiding and showing what's inside.
They also said their personality stays the same which I think is important because whenever people who used to know me without wearing alt clothes they think that my whole personality has changed when I'm just happier that I'm expressing myself. It's always fun to dress and express yourself in a way such as fashion.
Alt clothing isn't a costume or attention seeking (even though you get stares but that's just because people aren't used to it.) it's a way of expressing what's inside :)

It's so pointless to say that someone who dress alt is traumatized or have mental illness, because the truth is that we ALL are traumatized and have some kind of mental illness even if it's not diagnosed, the only difference may be that they've found a way to get out of being negative and being someone who society wants them to be. Instead they'll just be happy the way they are

I actually admire these people who dress however whatever they want. It's not easy to dress purely for ourselves when we live in a world that evolves around a particular society that rather forces us to blend in. I wish I could be more brave enough to wear whatever I want.. In the end of the day, life is too short to miss the things we love.

B.Stargirl This is the result of an oppressed society. Japanese people put a lot of pressure on each other whether it’s the things we wear even to how we behave. To us equality and similarity is more important than anything and they often criticize those who don’t. For example a lot of students who get bullied in Japan are usually bullied because they either look different or express their individuality and don’t fit in the social norms of society. They are usually bullied by groups of people in some cases by the whole school the teachers usually either ignore or encourage the bullies and often blame the victims and don’t get me started with the treatment of people from the LGBT community. I have personally experienced the same problems myself since I grew up pretty freely in the US and Germany they criticized and discriminated me for being different.

Work with what you got! Even without having much money, you can buy little bits at a time. The easiest would probably be fun jewelry and hair accessories! Shoes and shirts might get into the more pricey side ^^

@@Milkythefawn thanks for the tip! unfortunately my country doesn't have either of those :( at best I can find a few hot pink hair clips at the supermarket, but I used to make custom jewelry from cheap trinkets I found in various shops back in the day, some paint and a hot glue gun can do wonders ;P

I’ve loved decora for years, and a few times gotten bullied for wearing it. My message to you all is to never give up who you are and to keep on being kawaii! If you are nervous to try this fashion, but really want to wear it, just do it anyway’s. It may be difficult at first, but it’s worth it. Be yourself! You can be as colorful as you want! Love you all 💕🌈🌸

Initially, I too felt that some of the questions asked came across with a bit of judgment. But I think that the host intentionally makes it part of the interview process, to ask questions that are filled with curiosity, but also to be blunt in asking questions that stem from assumptions. Because to be honest, many viewers may be asking judgmental questions while watching this on the other side of the screen. I commend her for having the courage to ask these questions for the viewers, but still not be disrespectful to the fashion icons/stylists that she encounters. She always seems to balance it in the end with closing commentary that not only keeps an open mind about the different fashion movements, but embraces them too.
Overall, these vids are great---please keep 'em coming!
I honestly feel the same way about videos like that. I'm for sure going to watch more of her videos because of those two reasons :D

May someone agree with me that bright colors brings a feeling of joy and happiness? As an artist I'm most of the time trying to draw in harajuku decora style because all of these colors, the cute accessories makes me feel so happy, so joyful. I feel like the world around us is kinda monochromatic, and this style is like a rainbow in a cloudy dark sky. Maybe they feel great like I said when dressing like this, they feel happy. And who doesn't wanna be happy? And being happy most of the time is wonderful. It's not because they've found something that bring them joy, and stick to it, that means they're traumatized or begging for attention, they're just living their lives to the fullest. Remember that many people who's badly traumatized, depressed and etc doesn't dress like this. They're just expressing themselves through a fun way, just like people do when creating art, music, poems and etc.
