I love that she straight up says "unlikely" or "probably not" when she encounters some weird scenarios instead of "that absolutely does not happen ever, at all". Nature is no stranger to "unlikely" or "improbability" and I really appreciate it when scientists respect that.
In science, especially in the scientific literature and especially among nature sciences like Biology, words that imply certainty or that are too incisive tend to be a big no no. After all, science isn't a tool used to achieve absolute truths but to get as close as possible to what is more likely to be the underlying truth.

Our most recent field trip was 16 tags, each for about 1000 dollars. And 11 of them detached immediately, 4 stayed for more than 1 day and then detached, and the last one was caught by fishermen.... At the same time, we tried tagging tiger sharks, and after 3 weeks of fieldwork we caught one shark, ehise tag gave us zero info, and was then stolen by guides in the area.............

I think the idea is, respect them like any other predator. Don't vilify them - they're just fulfilling their ecological role, living their lives, and for the most part don't want trouble with humans. My biggest issue with shark movies is that the shark always spends a lot of energy trying to get the human. I’ve never heard of any animal spending more energy than it’s meal gives it.
This is actually one of the reasons I like shark movies, I find it hilarious that they create these sharks that instantly develop a vendetta against the characters

Most zoo's have shark or ray petting, they're very smooth and the sharks that you can pet at my local zoo in Indianapolis are actually called dog sharks
Crocs don't care. They'll eat whatever they can drag into the water. The movie "Rouge" starts with an actual scene of a large bull getting dragged by a salty.
I like her explanation because she is not like: “this is so dumb and this isn’t what you will ever see!” And she’s just like explaining what’s real and fake and even if it’s fake she’s enjoying the scene.

Deep Blue Sea is actually my favorite shark movie, the Sharks were mutated so nothing near compared to a real shark, like in Jurassic Park where it has been told so many times the Dinosaurs aren't like their ancestor because they had to fill in the dna witb existing animals.

I read a book about sharks and the writer explained what scared the sharks the most was the size of the bubbles. When he and other biologist were diving they were releasing small bubbles, which grew in size as they ascended closer to the surface (since pressure was declining). So they weren't as much afraid of regular bubbles, but the big ones closer to the surface.
Because it's such a mundane thing to be afraid of and reminds you subconsciously of how young kids can be afraid of mundane things is my best guess lol
Earlier this year we were out to swim with some (smaller) sharks at the North Shore on O‘ahu, Hawaii. Just when I wanted to get back on the boat, suddenly I noticed that all smaller sharks were gone, which was strange. Then someone on the boat yelled "Tiger Shark in the back".... so this 13-14 Tiger shark is swimming right at me to say "hi". I have to admit that for a second my heart stopped beating, because it much bigger than the other sharks. However, I stayed calm, looked right at it. The Tiger came close, then noticed that I am not the best looking food at this ocean buffet and then slowly swam away. I was so happy that I was able to see such an amazing creature in it's natural environment (without a cage or attracting it with blood). It is strange that later when I showed my GoPro video to my friends, most of them were so scared, by something which was one of the most beautiful moments in my life. "You don't have to worry about an ocean filled with sharks. Instead you should be worried about an ocean without them" I love what Melissa said at the end of the video :-)

About the size of the makos in Deep Blue Sea (it was my favourite movie when I was little, I know too much about this movie), the scientist bred/genetically engineered them to be bigger so their brains would end up larger. It's why it's bigger than regular mako sharks

As a Floridian who’s been by the beach my whole life I’ve had numerous encounters with sharks. They really are cool animals to observe. I’ve never seen someone get bit in 25 years, although when I was like 9 years old I was at the beach with my family and a friend and my friend was walking out of the water and I noticed a 3 foot shark swimming right behind him. It the only time I’ve screamed shark at the beach 😅. Most attacks happen in shallow water because they get you confused with some form of other prey it feeds on normally.
When I was a little bean I thought the Jaws music was the sound sharks made like, I always believed that if I ever saw a shark I’d hear it going: da da da da da da
If you find the documentary she is in about super Hammerhead sharks, you'll see how the two divers she was with did her dirty and left her behind on a night dive and a saltwater Croc grabbed her. Still remember the look on her face. Such a sweet girl.
Besides splashing attracting sharks panicking like that leads to people being drowned. It's like how people get trampled to death when there's a panic on land. I was very nearly killed by someone when there was a panic in the water. People grab you and try to claw over you to get to the shore/edge. They even climb on top of you.
I did rescue swimming training and the buddy who was acting as the drownee had the job of being as eratic and impossible to save as possible. In a panic people dont even register that they are literally almost killing their rescuer

This was super interesting. As someone who has been interested in sharks for a long time, I enjoyed listening to Ms. Márquez's analysis of shark behavior. I hope that some of the fears that developed because of movies like the ones mentioned abate over time as people become better educated about these magnificent creatures. They deserve to be protected and respected.

I've always been so passionate about sharks. My mom told me how one time I pissed off the staff at the aquarium in the shark show because I was constantly correcting everything they said... never lost my passion for them almost 20 years later. I'm not scared of sharks, I just respect them. When in the ocean I fully appreciate that as a human I am no longer the apex predator, and I am not in my environment anymore, I am in THIERS. My parents are field biologists and the "realest" part of this video for me was when she worried about losing the trackers. "Thousands of dollars, right to the ground!" is real. My parents are "appropriately afraid" of biological & environmental dangers, they are IRRATIONALLY terrified of breaking/losing their gear. 5/5 stars for this expert & this video!
If marine biologists made a shark movie it wouldn't be a horror movie bc the last thing a biologist would want is their subject of study to be at even more risk of being hunted to extinction for being a dangerous monster

Some sharks also like pats and head rubs :3 I think there was this diver who got a hook out of a lemon shark once. And then that shark kept coming up to see the diver whenever the diver dived there. Several years later, all the lemon sharks in the area come up to the diver for head rubs and pats. It's adorable.
there’s actually a movie called Ghost Shark about a ghost of a shark (shocking, i know) and it can pop up in *any* body of water, even puddles and bathtubs 😅
That's actually pretty accurate. The odds of seeing a shark by accident if u do things normally such as a regular scuba dive. Without obvious factors like seals which are a prey of great whites and other prey or breeding season or diving in prominently populated areas it's not that likely. I know someone personally that has over 4600 dives (scuba) and the amount of dives in which accidentally seeing a shark happened was about twice. Maybe even 3 times I haven't talked to them about it recently. Also trying to find sharks on purpose on dives (cage popularly) come with disclaimers and warnings that they may not actually see sharks (great whites) even in breeding season of an area that has them like cape town. But we do try really hard lol. Sorry for the long reply I kinda got over-excited.

watching sharks on tv in their natural environment without being in the ocean is a good way of learning about the nature of sharks. you'll be surprised how much you learn not all sharks are harmful. like for example nurse sharks, wale sharks, basking sharks and mega mouth sharks are considered harmless to humans since wale sharks, basking sharks and mega mouth sharks are filter feeders.
The fact that hammerhead sharks are afraid of bubbles makes me a lot less ashamed of my fear of the dark.

Crocodiles are terrifying, I’ve watched a couple of salt water crocodile attack stories recently and not many people survive them. Glad she’s ok 👍🏻.

Deep Blue Sea is actually my favorite shark movie, the Sharks were mutated so nothing near compared to a real shark, like in Jurassic Park where it has been told so many times the Dinosaurs aren't like their ancestor because they had to fill in the dna witb existing animals.

I read a book about sharks and the writer explained what scared the sharks the most was the size of the bubbles. When he and other biologist were diving they were releasing small bubbles, which grew in size as they ascended closer to the surface (since pressure was declining). So they weren't as much afraid of regular bubbles, but the big ones closer to the surface.

Earlier this year we were out to swim with some (smaller) sharks at the North Shore on O‘ahu, Hawaii. Just when I wanted to get back on the boat, suddenly I noticed that all smaller sharks were gone, which was strange. Then someone on the boat yelled "Tiger Shark in the back".... so this 13-14 Tiger shark is swimming right at me to say "hi". I have to admit that for a second my heart stopped beating, because it much bigger than the other sharks. However, I stayed calm, looked right at it. The Tiger came close, then noticed that I am not the best looking food at this ocean buffet and then slowly swam away. I was so happy that I was able to see such an amazing creature in it's natural environment (without a cage or attracting it with blood). It is strange that later when I showed my GoPro video to my friends, most of them were so scared, by something which was one of the most beautiful moments in my life.

About the size of the makos in Deep Blue Sea (it was my favourite movie when I was little, I know too much about this movie), the scientist bred/genetically engineered them to be bigger so their brains would end up larger. It's why it's bigger than regular mako sharks

As a Floridian who’s been by the beach my whole life I’ve had numerous encounters with sharks. They really are cool animals to observe. I’ve never seen someone get bit in 25 years, although when I was like 9 years old I was at the beach with my family and a friend and my friend was walking out of the water and I noticed a 3 foot shark swimming right behind him. It the only time I’ve screamed shark at the beach 😅. Most attacks happen in shallow water because they get you confused with some form of other prey it feeds on normally.

That's literally something that I would say.
Besides splashing attracting sharks panicking like that leads to people being drowned. It's like how people get trampled to death when there's a panic on land. I was very nearly killed by someone when there was a panic in the water. People grab you and try to claw over you to get to the shore/edge. They even climb on top of you.
Open water rescue, you have to be very careful how you approach someone that is struggling in the water. They will drown you if they are in a panic.
I did rescue swimming training and the buddy who was acting as the drownee had the job of being as eratic and impossible to save as possible. In a panic people dont even register that they are literally almost killing their rescuer

This was super interesting. As someone who has been interested in sharks for a long time, I enjoyed listening to Ms. Márquez's analysis of shark behavior. I hope that some of the fears that developed because of movies like the ones mentioned abate over time as people become better educated about these magnificent creatures. That’s something my sister brought up a few years ago. We go to the outer banks every summer and she was like “I wonder how many times we were swimming and a shark saw us, but we never saw it.” 😳😂

I've always been so passionate about sharks. My mom told me how one time I pissed off the staff at the aquarium in the shark show because I was constantly correcting everything they said... never lost my passion for them almost 20 years later. I'm not scared of sharks, I just respect them. When in the ocean I fully appreciate that as a human I am no longer the apex predator, and I am not in my environment anymore, I am in THIERS.

I think there was this diver who got a hook out of a lemon shark once. And then that shark kept coming up to see the diver whenever the diver dived there. Several years later, all the lemon sharks in the area come up to the diver for head rubs and pats. It's adorable.

That's actually pretty accurate. The odds of seeing a shark by accident if u do things normally such as a regular scuba dive. Without obvious factors like seals which are a prey of great whites and other prey or breeding season or diving in prominently populated areas it's not that likely. I know someone personally that has over 4600 dives (scuba) and the amount of dives in which accidentally seeing a shark happened was about twice. Maybe even 3 times I haven't talked to them about it recently. Also trying to find sharks on purpose on dives (cage popularly) come with disclaimers and warnings that they may not actually see sharks (great whites) even in breeding season of an area that has them like cape town. But we do try really hard lol. Sorry for the long reply I kinda got over-excited.

watching sharks on tv in their natural environment without being in the ocean is a good way of learning about the nature of sharks. you'll be surprised how much you learn not all sharks are harmful. like for example nurse sharks, wale sharks, basking sharks and mega mouth sharks are considered harmless to humans since wale sharks, basking sharks and mega mouth sharks are filter feeders.
