I love that he says "Here's what you SHOULD do" and then immediately acknowledges that in the moment, in that life or death situation, you absolutely wouldn't. You would do the wrong thing and die, because humans suck under pressure. That's how you know this guy is the real deal.

Partly because humans aren’t solitary creatures. We evolved to be in groups. In a wild type setting a lone human was a dead human. Ask survivalists and they’ll tell you that even have one other person with you dramatically increases your chances of survival.

Thank you! I've heard so much bad advice about bears. It was my cat who knew what to do. Even to discourage an attack by a bear, you drop down low and curl up.
This is what happened. My cat often went along with my dog and I for walks. At the time we lived in a small house in the woods. One time, as we were walking, we happened upon a bear. My dog and I just stood there (to his credit, my dog did not bark), but my cat, who was in front of us, just laid down on the ground, very purposefully, and slowly wagged his tail. It was, as if to say, "nothing to see here. Nope. Just move along." So I dropped down, crouching and bid my dog sit. The bear watched us for a moment, then moved on. Of course, the moment he was out of sight, we all ran for the house. LOL! Smartest cat I ever had. He was legendary.
Thank you, also, for getting it right about any animal being a "man-killer." That bear I met? He seemed as scared I felt... and did not seem at all eager to come at us. He just wanted to be left alone.

what is absolutely fantastic to me about the film Into the Wild is that it does not intend to drive people to become survivalists, it intends to show to the audience is that while nature and individualism are good aspects of life and we should appreciate them, we must also recognize that we are social animals, and that one of the absolute greatest natural wonders of our world is that of companionship we find in other humans, and how that helps both us, and those we are finding companionship with. perfectly presented by the relationships chris forms with people, becoming a found family of sorts to him, and him leaving a note at the end of the film saying “Happiness is only real when shared”, under his true name of Christopher, rather than his alias of Alexander Supertramp.

19:32 listening to Les talk about that moment he had with his dive instructor really made me realize just how awful mine was. On my very last ocean dive before my certification the wind picked up really bad as we were heading to the water. I expressed to the teacher that I was a bit uncomfortable with how rough the water was getting especially since our entry and exist was a really slippery Barnacle covered rock. He completely dismissed my concerns and said we’d be in and out before the water got any worse. So I went in. Once we were far enough out we finally went down but immediately I could tell that I was 1) not getting enough air through my reg and 2) way too buoyant and not sinking properly. So I tried to signal him to go back up but he ignored me and took the two other students down to the bottom. So I was forced to go to the surface alone where the water had gotten exponentially worse. It kept knocking my reg out of my mouth and I was starting to panic. I didn’t want to let go of our small buoy and try to swim to shore cause the water was really scarring me. It felt like forever before everyone finally came back to the surface and when my teacher saw me panicking he just grabbed my bcd and dragged me back to shore and just tossed me like a wet towel onto the rocks to try and climb out. Oh and he failed me for panicking in the ocean so I lost the $500 I spent on the course.

Smoke it like it’s jerky until there is almost no moisture and how you have jerky that can last months.

He couldn’t start a fire, and by the end of the book, he became very skilled and his panic and despair went away. That when a person came to save him, he ask the man if he wanted some of the food he had made.

Jeremiah Johnson was a great survivalist movie.
My siblings & I were very lucky.
We had a family camp with no potable water & an outhouse in the Allegheny mountains.
We had to hike 2 miles to get spring water.
    So good.
    No one around usually.
Black bear, rattlesnakes, copperheads, bobcat, porcupine, deer, skunk, red&black bitey ants (there were tons of anthills) etc.
Tons of wild blackberries in August.
So beautiful, but you had to be careful.
Our dad taught us how to survive by being totally aware of our entire surroundings.
How to use guns & other tools properly.
Everything has a place & purpose.
Did you know that you can eat maple tree bark & sap if you're hungry?
Wild mint, dandelion greens, safe mushrooms...
Being calm at all times & appreciating the deep beauty of this earth were my enduring takeaways.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Les.
