i’ve been always a good fan of the classics, especially Brahms, but today, i’m here listening to this piece of art again cause my atual reading has mentioned this song and i’m fascinated
I deeply love this piece and I heard it performed in hundreds of time with so deferent approach, and found this performance as one of the best ever. All are part of the special event all are so emotionally involve - the conductor the orchestra and of course the solists !
I've heard this sung by mezzos and they just don't suit the sonorities of this piece. The first two movements need to be dark, sung by a genuine alto, so that when the men's chorale arrives, the voice is borne just above their tone, as if they provide solace and support, rather than floating free at too high a register. This succeeds better than most. Love and appreciate the long silence after the last note.
tony bennett ..YES ! When the music ends and the last note is sounded, the vibrations continue to emanate out and out and must be allowed to subside not only in the ear but also in the heart. There should always be a period of absolute silence lasting at least ten seconds after the final note of any musical piece. The thunderous tsunami of sound made by hands clapping at the final moment ( and sometimes before!) , totally erases the enchanted silence.
Conductors nowadays cue their audiences by not lowering their hands until the silence is truly felt, and involved audiences respond, especially after works like this. The ending of Brahms's 2nd Symphony is another story.
this version of the Alt Rhapsody is by far the most beautiful, which I have heard so far and even surpasses the acclaimed performance of Kathleen Ferrier. both the orchestra, the male choir as conductor and a great Sarah Mignardo work together in a very sensitive way. The silence after the last note says everything about the appreciation of the audience. Impressive.
Ah! Hadn't noticed that. Thank you, for my admiration for Barbara Hannigan's work is as great as for this great performance: passion and restraint in passion, the visible and audible involvement of the orchestra members.
What a wonderful music! It is incomprehensible that this country with great thinkers, philosophers and musicians was the initiator of the First and Second World Wars. Can't understand
This is the ultimate mistery of European civilization. Sara Mingardo's performance can give an idea of the mistery. All these women and men are thinking about that. Then, silence of tears
Read the relevant parts of Jan Swafford's wonderful "Johannes Brahms: A Biography" for the very moving background of this piece. Better yet, read the whole book.
I love Saras performance but the male chorus was way too thin and the effect was lost. Look for the Icelandic performance and you will see and hear how it should be done.
I found this recording while looking for the piece after reading about it in Kingsley Amis's "Everyday Drinking" Amis recommends it for hangover listening, and goes so far as to say that you can't claim to like music if you don't have a recording in your possession, preferably performed by by Kathleen Ferrier. I guess I'll look for that recording next, But it's a shame the old fellow didn't get a chance to hear this performance.
First time I've ever felt and understood this piece. Her soft singing is exquisite.
I can't think of a more powerful, loving expression of loss, hate, peace, trust, and restoration.
Everything from singing to playing to conducting to camera work… just amazing…
I’ve been living with this piece for 25 years and this is the best performance I’ve heard. Truly gorgeous! Bravo to all involved, esp.Brahms & Goethe!
@@brianpotter2406 Oh man, may one express himself with "my favourite". Or should we add: "and mr. Potter's favourite is... "
@@brianpotter2406 Or the great Christa Ludwig !!
@@Patrick11030. Definitely !
I have listened for 50 years and I can only concur
A truly exceptional performance and so deeply felt by all concerned. I loved it.
This performance brought tears to my eyes. Especially the conductor's facial expression and the silence after the final note!
At the end of the performance the director was lightly moving to tears. Great performance, thank you for sharing.
Heard her sing this in 1997 at a Brahms “Fest” in London under Colin Davis - fabulous voice and understatedly beautiful lady

Splendida Mingardo. Orchestra veramente di alto livello. Grazie per aver postato questa meraviglia
Great performance and so good to see the participants so involved in the work. It counts!
Am just getting to know this piece, listening to different versions. I love this one, and so appreciate the English text. Thank you.

Yes, but I'm ok with spontaneous applause after a rip roaring piece like the 1812 Overture, for example.
tony bennett yes, I can see that.
Conductors nowadays cue their audiences by not lowering their hands until the silence is truly felt, and involved audiences respond, especially after works like this. The ending of Brahms's 2nd Symphony is another story.
So beautiful, thank you!
Magnifique! Mille grazie Sara Mingardo!
Thank you for the subtitles!
MOLTO BELLO...BEL EQUILIBRIO TRA TUTTE LE PARTI, LA BELLISSIMA VOCE DI MINGARDI E IL CORO MASCHILE...

E' tutto troppo meraviglioso, bellezza che guarisce l'anima. Sara e' Voce pura della poesia in musica

A rare and beautiful voice!
Fun fact: the wonderful soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan is in the audience. You can see her at 14:47
