Video rundown of the Vic Firth Modern Jazz Collection drumsticks
With the new Modern Jazz Collection drumsticks that Vic Firth launched at NAMM 2017, the sticks company kicks off with five new models. The MJC is a new product group that will see new drumsticks in the future as well.
These sticks come from the company's secret playground of literally thousands of prototypes. For these new designs Vic Firth collaborated with Jeff Ballard, Greg Hutchinson, Joe McCarthy and Lewis Nash to integrate their personal stick designs in this new product group.
Andy Tamulynas, product manager drumsticks for Vic Firth and Zildjian, takes you through all the specs of all these new products.

I play jazz and pop with thin cymbals. My favorite overall choice for this style is the Vic Firth 85A hickory sticks. They're like a light weight verso of the 5A and do not give me too much "ping". I've been playing since the 1960's and I've tried all kinds of brands, models, woods, tips and dimensions. For me, the 85A is the "Goldilocks" stick for jazz and small venues.
When I played rock, I liked maple and oak but that was a whole different "me".
Absolutely love the maple sticks you guys are making.I played hickory for over 40 years, picked up a pair of SD4,and simply love them.
I used to have the Modern Jazz 2 drumsticks by Vic Firth, but I smashed the shit out of it, playing heavy rock and metal.
For a reason ist modern jazz. And not modern heavy rock or metal collection. Just saying...
The Vic Firth MJ3 (Modern Jazz Collection) sticks are amazing. Longer with great weight balance.
One more request: a variation or combination on the original "RUTE" and "RUTE505." I'd love to see and perform with, drum stick, wood handles and heavier/stiffer/longer plastic. (denser/heavier/longer plastic dowels similar to the original "RUTE" but with plastic in place of wooden dowels) and a length the same as the MJ3 sticks. A beefed-up version of the RUTE505 combined with the original RUTE. This would be a go-to alternative implement that I would use all the time! Thanks for making amazing products for us.
