we just bought a house and it has a fisher mama bear in the basement. i didnt know what i had until my co worker saw it. what a great stove. its nice to see you refinishing it. they are a great piece.
Picked one up this week for $100 also, going to clean it up and put it back into service this winter. Any tips for removing the fire bricks? Especially the ones all the way in the back?
I have a brick layout map. It lists brick 1a to be pull up first and then the rest follow. 1a is the brick on the top row closest to the front. Also not sure what I did but I remember replacing them with standard firebricks from Lowe’s.
Perfect video, short and to the point. The stove looks great!!! I’m currently restoring my Grandma Bear and can’t get the doors to look anything like yours lol I haven’t tried your method yet. Can you tell me how much of the salt, vinegar and baking soda I should use for soaking them please, thanks
Thanks I am looking forward to using it at my new cottage (haven't built it yet!). I used 1 cup to 1 gallon mix of salt and vinegar. To rinse same thing. I cup of baking soda to one gallon of water. Precision is not required. However in both causes I knew right away it was working to to the visible reaction! I liked the Grandpa model. It was very popular.
Awesome, thank you!!! I haven’t fired up the Grandma yet (currently using Goldilocks in the garage) I just bought it a week ago and have been trying everything to get the rust and old paint off. The inside had layer after layer of rust. It was terrible. I used an air hammer gun on low with a chisel bit and it worked amazing!!! I’m starting the exterior of it today using your method. Thanks again for sharing your video/experience with us. Have a great day pal

That stove looks a lot better. Great job, thanks for sharing.
Is the Momma Bear heavy and how did you pick it up. Can two people lift it?
The Mama Bear weighs 395 lbs. I slid it on and off my pickup with a ramp (two people). I also “walked” it around by myself on level surfaces.

What did you do about the claw feet? Those make it worth a lot more!
I put the feet in the same solutions. Came out looking new.
Were the door air vents seized up on your stove, if so how did you free them up? I am in the process of restoring a fisher baby bear.
My door vents were fine. If seized I would leave the door overnight in a vinegar water mixture.
@@jeffbayly Thanks for the reply
Do you know what size door gasket this stove uses?
The Fisher woodstoves did not use a gasket. It should be fairly airtight as is. You might be able to retro fit a glued gasket but it is unnecessary
