Ahhh the sounds of Starting Up 4 Apple Xserves in my family room
I stopped using my Xserve before covid as they were sucking the local power grid dry. However now that I have lots of solar power, I have unretired them.They are much too loud for my family room! I may set them up in an outside shed with my solar system lithium batteries. Maybe I'll make my own supercomputer with XGrid, not sure yet.
Sad but I am now running 8 Mac mini’s, 4 Xserves, MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. Al currently in my family room. I won’t mention my 8 iPads. I purchased a iPhone 11 at the apple store and the guru did a find my Mac for some reason. She saw my computers and exclaimed "Holly Molly". It was then I realized that maybe I wasn't normal.
Anyone has a spare Xserve or server rack, please let me know! Might as well go big!
At the moment the xserves are mounted on an IKEA server rack. It works but a real server rack, in an outdoor shed, with my 42kw of lithium batteries, is my goal this summer.
The rack consists of two IKEA Lack side tables glued together with castors on bottom.
The activity light was flashing on Xserve 4, because it has a second power supply that wasn't plugged in.
I will be doing some upgrades shortly as I will be testing using SSDs as boot volumes and adding USB3 PCIE cards with some very large TB drives.

NDC (Eddie’s) Backyard Rink & Navan Skating Paths. Weekend Skating Feb. 2021.
มุมมอง 503 ปีที่แล้ว
I didn’t build a skating rink this year due to covid and what I saw as a lack of interest from the kids last winter. I guess things change. They love skating again. This weekend they skated on Eddie’s fantastic backyard rink on Saturday. Then on Sunday they visited a cool skating path in Navan. Neat idea. It was the first time they had skated in a while. Last year they only skated a couple of t...
Building my house in Navan Ontario (Ottawa). 3 guys, winter and a preserved wood foundation.
มุมมอง 1403 ปีที่แล้ว
Shortly after I graduated University, I wanted to move from Montreal to Ottawa area, as Ottawa was becoming quite a high tech area of Canada. I got a job with Bell Northern Research (Nortel) and found some land east of Ottawa. BNR was in the west end but I knew I would be commuting to Montreal for a while. Also the lot in Navan was a beautiful wooded 1/2 acre. The house was built by 3 guys: mys...

    Picked one up this week for $100 also, going to clean it up and put it back into service this winter. Any tips for removing the fire bricks? Especially the ones all the way in the back?

      @jeffbayly หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a brick layout map. It lists brick 1a to be pull up first and then the rest follow. 1a is the brick on the top row closest to the front. Also not sure what I did but I remember replacing them with standard firebricks from Lowe’s.

    Jeff, nice video, dig the music!. So my question is:. Why did you attach the short pieces of Unistrut to the ribs and not just attach the full length pieces of the Unistrut, directly to the ribs?. for giving you some adjustability?. Thanks E. Jones

    • @jeffbayly
      @jeffbayly 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes a full length piece of unistrut would be stronger, easier to install and give more flexibility, but to me it was an unnecessary expense. The feet serve its purpose well!

    I see you're in a wooded area. A video from the UK was putting mesh around the perimeter of the panels to keep vermin and birds from nesting. In snowy Ontario that could be a problem. I just wondered if you've had any issues with nesting critters?

    You state the clearance needs to be 3.75 to 4 inches so what clearance does this give you? Did you use long enough screws to penetrate the wood sub-roof or just on the rib of the metal roof? Nice job.

    Exactly how much power does a server use?

      @dantdmnl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisVTitus my HP ProLiant DL380 G7 uses quite a bit more power, usually 300w under full load but I've seen it spike to 450w once. It stays pretty damn quiet under load which is nice. Do they blow out more heat than Mac Pros, or does it just blow out louder. The cpus on them are the lower thermo load ones.

    Perfect video, short and to the point. The stove looks great!!! I’m currently restoring my Grandma Bear and can’t get the doors to look anything like yours lol I haven’t tried your method yet. Can you tell me how much of the salt, vinegar and baking soda I should use for soaking them please, thanks

    • @jeffbayly
      @jeffbayly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks I am looking forward to using it at my new cottage (haven't built it yet!). I used 1 cup to 1 gallon mix of salt and vinegar. To rinse same thing. I cup of baking soda to one gallon of water. Precision is not required. However in both causes I knew right away it was working to to the visible reaction! I liked the Grandpa model. It was very popular.

      Awesome, thank you!!! I haven’t fired up the Grandma yet (currently using Goldilocks in the garage) I just bought it a week ago and have been trying everything to get the rust and old paint off. The inside had layer after layer of rust. It was terrible. I used an air hammer gun on low with a chisel bit and it worked amazing!!! I’m starting the exterior of it today using your method. Thanks again for sharing your video/experience with us. Have a great day pal

    Do you know what size door gasket this stove uses?

    • @jeffbayly
      @jeffbayly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Fisher woodstoves did not use a gasket. It should be fairly airtight as is. You might be able to retro fit a glued gasket but it is unnecessary
