I was certain Zack would steal the win with the brainstone... Bad beats for Zack, but i think Pyro deserved this victory! Oh, and RiP Ryan :D I'm sure he had a cool deck :D
Well i mean Kaalia isn't exactly a CEDH deck either its super inconsistent and like any Mardu deck relies on a good start, heavy destruction or luck to get going.
Oh man I used to have an arcum deck. Was my absolute favourite thing to play before the paradox engine ban. Can't wait to see what a more recent list looks like
I thought the same, but Zack's list is playing very few expensive spells - only 4 that cost 6+ which was what he needed on the last turn. Doesn't seem to be a priority of his build.
@@TheConnorRoberson If he had a 3+ there would at least have been a chance to win from the mana crypt flip (even if it wouldn't have mattered since Pyro won that flip)
I'd say that Access Tunnel is the even spicier card today. It was instrumental in making sure Master of Cruelties remained relevant in the midgame and ensured Pyro to be able to kill with any creature
I’m a newer EDH player and I’ve built BOTH yuriko and kaalia so it was awesome seeing them go at it. For a moment I was like “ is yuriko gonna come back!?” Truly awesome.
Kaalia into Master of Cruelties was the spaciest plays back in Dragon's Maze commander era. Back when Dead-Eye Navigator - Palinchron was THE combo to beat and everyone was asking for a DEN ban.
What would it take to shift the meta to where stuff like Kaalia, Yuriko and Mono-White stax were tier 1, or at the very least tier 1.5. I want blocking to matter in cEDH games more consistently.
mote tutors in sans black. blood pod and najeela are great decks if you want to attack but mono white specifically would need more creature tutors like recruiter or stax peices on 1 cmc creatures. Yuriko is tier 1.5 imo, very strong deck. Kaalia big beats is interesting but I don't really have comments on how it elevates. Probably just more spells that can enable early kaalia's and more spells that can protect kaalia's for free
Can someone explain to me the why.s of turn 8? Pyro could use Access Tunnel to connects with MoC and kill Zack? Why all this Silence and Shifting Memnite? Thanks.
Does Pyro have a Moxfield account? I recently proxied up his Selvala deck from a previous episode and it's been a blast. I need more of this dudes lists.
I Need help understanding something. This was a topic at last FNM. Is master of cruelties an attack trigger or a replacement effect for combat damage to a player
it is a triggered ability that triggers before combat damage is dealt. that's why Ryan lost. Master of Cruelty attacked, he wasn't blocked, his ability triggered (Ryan lost 39 life, yes this is life loss) and then Kalia connected effectively killing Ryan that was at 1 life
Rakdos the Defiler is pretty spicy with Kaalia. Since it enters attacking you can ignore sacrificing stuff yourself but your opponent with have to. Not good for a second attack unless you can get it back into your hand…
And I mean on his last turn, he had 5 mana post impulse. He could've played brainstone, crack brainstone, cracked brute, and he's out of kill range. Then he hits for enough damage on his next turn
Doesn’t master of cruelties miss the “attack” trigger on the turn it cheats out with Kaalia? … I always thought that, since it enters attacking already, any attack triggers were missed until the next turn…
Because Master of Cruelties says "attacks and isn't blocked", his ability only triggers after blockers are declared. The fact that he wasn't declared as an attacker doesn't matter, the game only cares if he was blocked or not.
he does the "can only attack alone" thing Kalia bypasses it by putting it directly into the battlefield attacking. the second part "whenever master of cruelty attacks a player and isn't blocked..." also triggers cause he only cares for 2 things for this ability to trigger 1) the he is attacking 2) no creatures are declared to block it this triggers even if MoC was put onto the battlefield attacking rather than halving been declared as an attacker in the declare attackers step
I used to run a Jeskai Magic Martial arts deck with Shu Yun as the commander and my buddy had an Archum Daggson deck and he had everything to go off and win and told everyone "if you don't kill me before my next turn, I WILL win the game". The turn passes to me, everyone kinda sighs and is like ok...what do you plan to do because if you can't stop him we're all dead. I had Shu Yun, Jeskai Ascendency and a mana rock on the board with a full grip, looked at the table and gave them a line straight from Goku. "I'm going to end this in one attack." Combo'd off, gay Shu Yun double strike and unlockable and leathaled him for 22 commander dmg. Still have the deck, just Elsha is the commander now xD. Take THAT Arcum Daggson!
So what makes a combat based deck cEDH? I’m part of cEDH Reddit and Facebook groups where I constantly see people post their combat based decks and told they aren’t cEDH viable (using non meta commanders). When does a combat based deck become cEDH viable?
If you're playing a strictly proactive deck, then the real measure of power usually comes down to "how many turns on average does it take to reliably goldfish a win". Lists like Godo can do this INSANELY FAST, which is what makes it a long-term CEDH staple, and decks like Najeela have access to interaction on the stack courtesy of its blue color identity which allow it to pivot better to control if its proactive plan gets thwarted.
Wouldn't Master of Cruielties not trigger due to the tapped and attacking clause of kaalia? "Although the creature you put onto the battlefield is an attacking creature, it was never declared as an attacking creature. This means that abilities that trigger whenever a creature attacks won’t trigger when it enters the battlefield attacking."
Because Master of Cruelties says "attacks and isn't blocked", his ability only triggers after blockers are declared. The fact that he wasn't declared as an attacker doesn't matter, the game only cares if he was blocked or not.
@@arroaboy7348 I understand, not attack with it, force the 3 mana to be tapped to hace the creature be unblocked and gain 3 life. That would have given him 1 turn for 1 damage

I especially liked that part where we cast 1 card before dying.

Always nice to see that deck win. My personal pet deck is my own with the same commander. Nice seeing no mercy with Master of Cruelties either.
Why didn't Zack just use gingerbrute's gain 3 life ability on the last turn instead of attacking with it? He would have won.
Because nobody reads the flavor text of Gingerbrute :D
