Congratulations on your incredible achievement! Balancing studies, especially in a field like medical coding, with the demands of raising young children is no small feat. Add to that the challenges of studying in a non-native language, and your accomplishment is truly commendable. Your dedication and hard work are inspiring. I'm so glad to hear that my videos played a part in your journey. Keep pushing forward and best of luck in your coding career! 🎉👏🌟

I am currently enrolled in Medical coding course through my university online and the class uses the Buck's step by step book and workbook. I am glad to see the course I am taking is teaching me correctly.
Hi. I took it through the University of Houston - Downtown. They have an in person option or an online option. the online option actually goes through CourseEd@@Racquelmonique
You can take the books to the exam?! 😮 my gosh so glad I found your channel I’m on this path, been in the medical field all my life working as a Contractor and Credentialing Specialist but… looking to work fully remote. Thank you for this video, new follower here 😊
Thank you for the tips. I recently had a hardship that stopped my journey to achieving my CCS certification. I am currently in the medical field and became interested in medical coding. I have 2022 books. I appreciate your knowledge and recommendations. 😊
So I got my degree last year and have been looking for a job but again they want you to be certified, I’m studying now and gave myself till March to take exam but I think I need more help studying and to know exactly what I should be looking at. I love your videos they def help and would love more videos of the break down. Also do you do any billing?? That’s also something I want to get certified in. I just got my 2023 books and I’m going through the tabs now and guidelines.
Hey! So im in school now for medical coding/billing and you mentioned you have a degree but aren't certified? I guess Im wondering if you have a degree in medical coding and does the degree not certify you?!
Degree is separate from being certified. I got an Associates degree in Medical Billing & Coding. I have not been able to get a job because I am not certified. I am studying and preparing to take the CBCS (certified billing and coding specialist) exam. This is the only way to get a job in the medical field (for billing & coding) 😊
Got my Buck's 2023 books today and got registered with Elsevier Evolve. Thanks for the tip about picking Utah!😘 ps...Hope you have a great Mother's Day.
I’m a Medical assistant who landed a medical coding job 2 years ago and now they’re paying for my certification and books. Hoping self study will help me pass!
First, I love watching your videos you are super sweet and informative! ❤ Could you do a video on CCS vs RHIT? I am currently almost finished with my RHIT degree. I am wanting to get into a career with coding then work my way to be a coding supervisor then eventually maybe even higher! Would the RHIT be beneficial to this? I just hope I didn’t waste time, effort and money for the RHIT degree if all I needed was a CCS 😅
Do you believe it makes sense to select the pre-req when purchasing the AAPC course? It is additional $995.00 😅. I am wondering if the medical terminology/anatomy book would sufice?
If I plan on sitting next year for my exam and taking the training at a slower pace… would I need to have all the 2024 books for the exam and when do those typically come out
Is it ok to get the Expert books as you were showing, or being a beginner and sitting for the CPC for the first time, should I get the professional version first on ICD-10-CM and on the HCPCS?
If you're talking about the AAPC edition, they're exactly the same books, the "expert" are the ones listed on the website as "professional". For other additions, I don't have personal knowledge of their different versions and variations. But these would be the ones: www.aapc.com/medical-coding-books/physician-bundle-code-book-1/bundle/
Hi Victoria! Thank you so much for the tips in the video. I am taking AAPC's CPC course, but it is not instructor led, so I'm a little on my own as I work through the material. In addition to my AAPC text I also bought the Buck's text and workbook at your recommendation and I have been liking the textbook a bit better than my AAPC book! However, I'm getting a bit stuck on the guideline for sequelae I.B.10. I was wondering if you by any chance have a video on examples of all the different ways you could code for a sequelae. I watched your video on the guidelines but I didn't find that it got enough into the weeds for my understanding. I get so confused on these and not sure why. Thanks again!
@@lenacordova3460 I did well, but I do have a background in healthcare and strong anatomy/medical terminology knowledge. But there was still a lot I had to learn of course! I definitely suggest finding a tutor because I don't think the AAPC course gives as much information for people that have little or no experience in healthcare as they should and they don't give enough examples of difficult/confusing things to code (like sequela). Wyzant and LinkedIn are great places to find coding tutors and their rates are usually pretty reasonable.
Hello! I’m investigating changing careers and applied for a Patient Service Representative position that requires “basic understanding of ICD 9 & CPT CODING. I just watched your “101 Medical Coding for Beginners.” I’ve also looked up information regarding ICD 9 and CPT coding on the internet. Your class is BY FAR the best introduction to the subject. Question: what do you perceive the job description means when it says “basic understanding?” I’ve honestly answered “no” on this question, and have been invited to interview. I would really like to get the position. Do you have any suggestions on how to be considered as having basic understanding? Thank you!
I always preferred the Buck’s books but didn’t realize they had a step-by-step one; I find it odd they would only answer the odd numbers as you’ve mentioned in the past 🧐 I’m definitely interested in getting them even though I’m already a certified CPC-A and CRC. Medical terminology book looks good too! Exciting for EMR examples 👏🏼 Thanks for the info! Been watching you a long while 😉
Hi there. Does the 2024 Bucks step by step books have the answers like the 2023 edition? I saw a couple reviews saying it did not. Thought u might know. Thanks!!!
I read the reviews as well. I just received the 2024 hard copies. The 2024 Step-by-Step Workbook only has answers to the odd-numbered questions in Appendix B. The non-workbook has all of the Exercise, Quick Check and Toolbox answers in Appendix B. Hope this helps.
I am a recently retired from PT (age 59, can't take the physicality anymore), I am using the AAPC course for the CPC. The only thing I have struggled with so far is the Cardiac section and specifically it is with CABG's and cardiac catheterizations. Any suggestions? I am on the last four chapters of the course right now. Should I get the Step-by-step books too?
I have 15 years medical billing and coding, but have heen out of medical for 8 years so not much experience in ICD-10. Do you think self study is the good option?
I bought the Buck's 2023 Medical Coding book with the workbook but do I need to buy the ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT books as well to study with the Buck's book?
Question! If we sign up for your program, how would we list that on your resume? Would it be considered official training or how would that go? Sorry if it's an odd question. I'm trying to make sense of how I'd list my training/education on a resume ❤
Q: If I'll want to work on inpatient setting do I need to go for CCS certification through AHIMA? It's different from CPC certification? Can I study with preppy and still go for CCS? Or it's a different program...🤯🤯🤯
Would you recommend studying with say 2022 book but taking the test with the 2024 version? Am I going to miss anything? Holding off buying the books again to ensure I get thru my self study before I buy the books for the exam.
Hello! If I want to start self studying now and take the cpc exam near the beginning of next year do I have to wait until the 2025 Bucks coding book is released or can I study the 2024 Bucks coding book and take the exam in 2025?
@ContempoCoding Hello Victoria, sorry my keyboard betrays me, my question is, I bought the AMA 2025 books, can I take the exam using these books for the AAPC exam?
@@lizdiana7459 Yes, you can use the AMA 2025 books starting January of 2025. AAPC has an annual "blackout period" for exams December 29 - January 14 while implementing the coming year's exam updates. During this timeframe, no exams are administered. Exams typically resume around January 15.
Victoria thanks for all the great tips you give here. I am interested in taking the CPC test. Where do I apply for the exam. I was told there is a test in the fall? Is this correct? Please advise. Thanks again
Do you think its okay to wait to get the AAPC membership until later in study? I am self studying and am going to take the exam by the end of the year. but i am trying to decide the best time to get the membership. I love your videos they help me so much!
I am just starting, have no other coding books and can't afford to buy these all at once. Would the step by step text and workbook be enough to get started learning and practicing, or do I need others to go along with them to look up the codes?
Hi there, I just graduated the medical certificate program through SBCC and looking into taking the CPC exam. I'm curious if you have specific recommendation for how to study for this exam. I see that AAPC has bundles of the quizzes and whatnot. Is this worth the hefty price tag?
You keep talking about cpc I live in Washington state and I go to a community college for HIM so I can test for my RHIA what is the difference? Im learning the things you are teaching so is that just what its called in your state. Most businesses here want you to have your RHIA. So I'm just looking for clarification.
BADASS SHIRT! Is is possible to get a remote job with health records and billing/coding certifications without medical experience? I have tons of office/audit type experience but it's been a while. Not sure how difficult it will be and how would training be if I can't find a local employer.
It is possible to get a remote job with health records and billing/coding without medical experience, but it may require some effort and dedication on your part. Many healthcare organizations and medical billing companies are willing to hire remote employees who have obtained the necessary certifications and can demonstrate strong office/audit skills. Overall, while it may be challenging to find a remote job in the medical billing and coding field without prior medical experience, it is not impossible. By obtaining the necessary certifications and demonstrating a willingness to learn, you can increase your chances of finding a job in this field.
Hello, I hope you don’t mind if I ask… are there employers that employs from an online medical coder course ? Also, if you know any good online school for this course and how much? Thank u
I’m not really self studying to pass the exam specifically, but I just wanted to give myself a leg up before I start classes at a university (best option for me) since I have VERY limited medical job experience, so I ordered the Step-by-Step books. BE AWARE the 2024 edition of the Workbook went back to ODD number answers!!!!!!! It’s so dumb just give all the answers for heaven sake, super annoying and you can’t get all the answers unless you are a TEACH instructor! And in the 2024 study book the answers to the Chapter Review theory and Practical sections are not in the book again you have to have be a TEACH instructor to get access. I’m just skipping those, still a tone of really great information. I in no way blame Victoria and this is an older video just wanted to make people aware of the 2024 version issues for the Buck's Step-by-Step Books.
Also an up date for registering on the EVOLVE site, still select Utah for your institution state but just type AAPC for the institution it is no longer listed under the full name.
hi! @ContempoCoding i have all the 2022 editions of these books, I just now am getting back into coding to take the 2024 test... do I need to purchase all new books? or just a new CPT 2024 edition? thanks!
The exams get a refresh every January 1st to reflect the current calendar year's code sets. So, even though ICD-10-CM codes might update on October 1st, those changes won't show up in the exam until the new year rolls around. 🗓️ Feel free to use last year's books, but just know you might be at a slight disadvantage. For the full scoop, check out AAPC's official guidance: www.aapc.com/certification/faq.aspx " What year's books should I use? All AAPC exams are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, so we strongly suggest you use the current year’s books. The previous calendar year’s books may be used on an exam, but you would be at obvious disadvantage doing so. The upcoming year’s books are not allowed for exam use. The exams are updated every January for the new code sets."
Does the Preppy course include CPC exam fee, Practicode, and Codify? Also, do you only receive ebooks of the material or the actual physical books needed to take the exam? Thanks in advance!
I’m estimated to start my externship in July and actually won’t graduate until September. So I’ll be working in a hospital for two months before graduation. From everything I’ve heard it’s difficult finding a job in coding just out of school. Most of the hospitals in our area require 1 year experience minimum. I do have a connection as my dads friend is the hospital director and said he would hire me. He didn’t mention as what though. If I pass my CPC exam, will I most likely get hired as a coder?
Just take whatever they offer you that you can do, and you can go from there, you need a foot in the door that may take you to your first coding position in the future, good luck!!
Hey really good video say you sighn up for preppy right would you need to purchase the books in this video as well ? Also if you go the self taught route how would I apply for the cbcs exam ?
Thank you for watching! If you sign up for Preppy, they typically provide their own resources, but it's always beneficial to have the coding books as a reference, especially for real-world applications. When it comes to the self-taught route, you can apply for the CBCS exam directly through the NHA (National Healthcareer Association) website. They have guidelines and steps to walk you through the application process. Make sure to fulfill all their eligibility requirements before applying!
I was looking at the Preppy course for the program that you have been advocating. I'm a little confused on how the certification works. I see that you get a "certificate of completion" from Auburn University. However, to be clear....this isn't the certification that AAPC gives, right? This Preppy course just helps you prepare for taking the exam? Does preppy in their included price offer the AAPC exam or is that something you have to pay more money on separately from the course price? I would have direct messaged you or emailed you but I couldn't find where I could ask these questions. I'm very serious about possibly taking the course but I would like some solid answers from someone I trust.
There are no courses that exist that will make you a certified coder upon completion, including the one from the AAPC. In order to become a CPC, you need to sit for an pass a proctored examination. Much like you are not an LPN when you complete your practical nursing courses, you need to sit for an official examination. Preppy will prepare you for taking the exam, but you will have to pay for AAPC membership and pass the exam. You would also have to pay for membership and pass the exam if you go with the AAPC or any other company.
@@ContempoCoding Ok. Thank you for the information. I really appreciate your reply. I actually went with the live class through AAPC as I felt it offered everything I needed in order to be successful, including their membership. Thank you again, and I watch almost everything you put out btw. Even if it doesn't apply to me. I especially watch all the beginner stuff. I'm super stoked to begin my coding course on March 20. SO EXCITED!
How would recommend crossing over into coding for someone who has been cross trained for beginners coding as a Medical Assistant. I graduated to be a MA but I want to do more of coding.
Preppy offers eBooks, which is where the industry is moving towards. I actually just did an interview with the VP of Products and Services at the AAPC and she spoke about how they're piloting the eBooks for exams and it seems we're moving in that direction -- just not there quite yet. Preppy does offer you the option to purchase the paper books for examination purposes since we're still transitioning over the adoption of digital tools in the industry. If you have any further questions or concerns, reach out to help@preppy.org, they have an amazing customer service team that can help you out.
I have the step by step text book. I'm looking to get the work book.is that card in there to register for the practice test from aapc in Salt Lake Utah?

I have my RHIT and I coded long term care for 17 years. I am wanting to get my CCS and thought I could do it by myself, but the PCS coding has me stumped. What is your suggestion for me to acquire the CCS credential?
With your extensive experience in long-term care and your RHIT, you've got a solid foundation to build upon for the CCS. PCS can indeed be a challenging component, especially if it's new to you. My suggestion would be to take a specialized course focusing specifically on PCS or ICD-10-PCS guidelines. Since you already have experience in coding, you might not need a full CCS course but rather targeted study on the areas you're less familiar with. Another option is to get a good PCS study guide and practice, practice, practice. Make sure you understand the rationale behind each code, as understanding the 'why' can often clarify the 'how.' Lastly, consider joining forums or social media groups where you can pose specific coding questions and get feedback from others who've been through the CCS exam. Good luck on your journey to earning the CCS credential!
Hey, quick question, I have an Associates Degree in Nursing. I also have medical assistant experience, and also 7 years hospital experience. I was wondering if I qualify to self teach and/or sit for the exam?
There are no official prerequisites or accreditation considerations for medical coding certifications. They are not regulated. You just need to pay to become a member, and pay for a pass the exam.
I graduated got my diploma in Medical billing and ceding from UMA in 2015 I received my diploma I never took the CPC exam. I need to refresh my knowledge can u help in achieving. my goal
I started 2 months ago with AARP and doing self pace. I am having a hard time with coding integumentary. Do u have any suggestions of books or anything else that Will really break things down in simple language. Not necessarily just that area but all of it ? Thanks
So there's what they call lay descriptions of simple language description of the CPT codes that can be really helpful. There are some in books like the Coder's Desk Reference for Procedures or the AAPC's Procedure Desk Reference (www.aapc.com/medical-coding-books/procedure-desk-reference-code-book/ebook/) but you can also sign up for some coding tools that include them such as Find-a-Code, Codify, iCoder, SelectCoder, etc. You look up a code and it gives you what's involved in simple language.
Hello, I am just starting to look into medical billing and coding, on the AAPC site they suggest taking the fundamentals of medicine first to learn the terminology and anatomy. If I have very little medical knowledge would you suggest that as well before taking the medical billing and coding coursework?
@@melissalee424 I didn't have any previous medical knowledge. I started the AAPC package in April of this year. I definitely recommend it. I took Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Pathophysiology, and now I'm in Chapter 4 of the CPC course. The coding coursework uses all those terms, as well as the books.

Only a handful of areas accept the CBCS for medical coding positions, so check your area. You really really should get a certification through AAPC or AHIMA.
@ContempoCoding which one is the better option AACP or AHIMA For someone in Michigan. I took the medical and billing course from Ross Medical Education in Taylor.
I haven’t worked in medical coding since 2017, I pay for my ccs credential every year on my own dime, I would prefer outpatient coding to be my next job, what would you suggest?

Hi. I took it through the University of Houston - Downtown. They have an in person option or an online option. the online option actually goes through CourseEd@@Racquelmonique
What university do you attend?
@@SheilaLawrence106 i attended University of Houston Downtown, but they used powerpoints from CampusEd
You can take the books to the exam?! 😮 my gosh so glad I found your channel I’m on this path, been in the medical field all my life working as a Contractor and Credentialing Specialist but… looking to work fully remote. Thank you for this video, new follower here 😊
Thanks!
You bet!
Your awesome ❤!! A wealth of clear information ❤!
I was a dental hygienist for 27 years, very interested in this. Thank you❤
@@Jacqueline_R same here just started down this new career path! good luck!
Thank you for the tips. I recently had a hardship that stopped my journey to achieving my CCS certification. I am currently in the medical field and became interested in medical coding. I have 2022 books. I appreciate your knowledge and recommendations. 😊
I have to ask if you took the CCS certification exam yet?! I'm in the same boat as you. I'm scheduled to take it July 31st.
Me too it’s so hard to find a job if you’re not certified. I got the CPC study guide 2023 and has like a brief review of all the books she mentioned
Congratulations for 100K you did it🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
If i do preppy, do you still suggest all these books? I prefer paper books to ebooks.
Thank you for this 🙏🏽 will purchase three your link ❤
You’re awesome !
🧠👍🏼
I’m a Medical assistant who landed a medical coding job 2 years ago and now they’re paying for my certification and books. Hoping self study will help me pass!
So blessed!!
@@nataliepaige007 I’m an MA who is looking to move into medical coding. How did you do so without your certification?
First, I love watching your videos you are super sweet and informative! ❤
Could you do a video on CCS vs RHIT? I am currently almost finished with my RHIT degree. I am wanting to get into a career with coding then work my way to be a coding supervisor then eventually maybe even higher! Would the RHIT be beneficial to this? I just hope I didn’t waste time, effort and money for the RHIT degree if all I needed was a CCS 😅
Do you believe it makes sense to select the pre-req when purchasing the AAPC course? It is additional $995.00 😅. I am wondering if the medical terminology/anatomy book would sufice?
Thank you for this information. You are very helpful to me.
You are so welcome!
I’ll be starting the Aapc CPC course in November, how did you do on it?
Been watching you a long while 😉
I agree! I passed my CPC in 2019 and my CCS in 2021 and I feel like I need to purchase the Buck’s textbook to enhance and keep up with the content
I'm taking CRC....pretty interesting
Hi there. Does the 2024 Bucks step by step books have the answers like the 2023 edition? I saw a couple reviews saying it did not. Thought u might know. Thanks!!!
I just bought the 2024 edition of the eBook for Bucks Step by Step and every single answer is in Appendix B. 🤷🏻♀️
Thanks a lot!
I’m coming up on my “retirement” from massage therapy… sadly I have to change careers too
I have 15 years medical billing and coding, but have heen out of medical for 8 years so not much experience in ICD-10. Do you think self study is the good option?
Hi,
I need to know if there’s anesthesia supply cpt code
I bought the Buck's 2023 Medical Coding book with the workbook but do I need to buy the ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT books as well to study with the Buck's book?
Question! If we sign up for your program, how would we list that on your resume? Would it be considered official training or how would that go? Sorry if it's an odd question. I'm trying to make sense of how I'd list my training/education on a resume ❤
Are you referring to the Preppy program that I recommend?
Q: If I'll want to work on inpatient setting do I need to go for CCS certification through AHIMA? It's different from CPC certification? Can I study with preppy and still go for CCS? Or it's a different program...🤯🤯🤯
Impress employers by getting a business degree or a health information management degree along side the CPC
Would you recommend studying with say 2022 book but taking the test with the 2024 version? Am I going to miss anything? Holding off buying the books again to ensure I get thru my self study before I buy the books for the exam.
Hello! If I want to start self studying now and take the cpc exam near the beginning of next year do I have to wait until the 2025 Bucks coding book is released or can I study the 2024 Bucks coding book and take the exam in 2025?
can I use the AMA boks? what is the different. ?
Thanks Victoria
Use them for what?
@ContempoCoding Hello Victoria, sorry my keyboard betrays me, my question is, I bought the AMA 2025 books, can I take the exam using these books for the AAPC exam?
@@lizdiana7459 Yes, you can use the AMA 2025 books starting January of 2025. AAPC has an annual "blackout period" for exams December 29 - January 14 while implementing the coming year's exam updates. During this timeframe, no exams are administered. Exams typically resume around January 15.
@ContempoCoding Thank you so much Victoria you are the best.
Having just the step by step books would be kind of like having a book on car repair but no car and no tools.
Hi there, I just graduated the medical certificate program through SBCC and looking into taking the CPC exam. I'm curious if you have specific recommendation for how to study for this exam. I see that AAPC has bundles of the quizzes and whatnot. Is this worth the hefty price tag?
Idk what to write in my icd-10 book. I bought the cpt book notes but don’t know what to write in the other book.
is it okay to buy used copies from past years to study off of before committing to buying the expensive current ones?
Thank u
Where can I find your videos that you mentioned are broken down into chapters for the step by step book?
Feel free to use last year's books, but just know you might be at a slight disadvantage. For the full scoop, check out AAPC's official guidance:
www.aapc.com/certification/faq.aspx
" What year's books should I use?
All AAPC exams are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, so we strongly suggest you use the current year’s books. The previous calendar year’s books may be used on an exam, but you would be at obvious disadvantage doing so. The upcoming year’s books are not allowed for exam use. The exams are updated every January for the new code sets."
@ContempoCoding For the step by step medical coding book seeing as its 2024 can I still purchase the 2023?
Does the Preppy course include CPC exam fee, Practicode, and Codify? Also, do you only receive ebooks of the material or the actual physical books needed to take the exam? Thanks in advance!
Please contact help@preppy.org and they will be able to assist you with the most current and accurate responses to your questions.
There's no way to say for certain, it depends on a lot of different factors.
Just take whatever they offer you that you can do, and you can go from there, you need a foot in the door that may take you to your first coding position in the future, good luck!!
What do you recommend for Behavioral health outpatient services?
As far as education? I know the AAPC has a training course, other than that I'm not super involved in that specialty.
This great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey really good video say you sighn up for preppy right would you need to purchase the books in this video as well ? Also if you go the self taught route how would I apply for the cbcs exam ?
Thank you for watching! If you sign up for Preppy, they typically provide their own resources, but it's always beneficial to have the coding books as a reference, especially for real-world applications. When it comes to the self-taught route, you can apply for the CBCS exam directly through the NHA (National Healthcareer Association) website. They have guidelines and steps to walk you through the application process. Make sure to fulfill all their eligibility requirements before applying!
Hi ,I am pharmacy technician and I am really interested to get billing and coding certification.
Good job
so i’m taking the preppy courses now thanks to you:) do i still need to get those books?
Preppy offers eBooks, which is where the industry is moving towards. I actually just did an interview with the VP of Products and Services at the AAPC and she spoke about how they're piloting the eBooks for exams and it seems we're moving in that direction -- just not there quite yet. Preppy does offer you the option to purchase the paper books for examination purposes since we're still transitioning over the adoption of digital tools in the industry. If you have any further questions or concerns, reach out to help@preppy.org, they have an amazing customer service team that can help you out.

Make sure you understand the rationale behind each code, as understanding the 'why' can often clarify the 'how.'
Lastly, consider joining forums or social media groups where you can pose specific coding questions and get feedback from others who've been through the CCS exam.
Will the 2023 help me sit for the at the start of 2024?
@@ContempoCoding thank you, Also looking at the step by step books u recommended.

@ContempoCoding how do I check if michigan is recognized CSCB a
@ContempoCoding which one is the better option AACP or AHIMA For someone in Michigan. I took the medical and billing course from Ross Medical Education in Taylor.
The books can be used during the exam right?
Yes, you're not required to memorize the codes.
So I'm taking courses through Preppy-should I list Auburn University or AAPC?
