      Adrian Larkins so sad 😔. He seemed like such a sweet soul, and I'm young, so he was way before my time, but he was a great musician, and I totally respect him. Another great that least this world too soon was Eddie Cochran, and of course Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens- I mean, good Lord, what if those two guys had lived to be old. So tragic, it makes me want to cry 😥.

Because you can’t please everyone so You have to please yourself!!!! Brilliant Brilliant!! The older I get the deeper I really appreciate Mr. Nelson as a person with a heart of gold and pure talent! He had a lot of joy too, though! This last year of 1985, he met his idol, Carl Perkins! They were arguing who would open for whom the next year! Also, Carl Perkins, was a Favorite of John Fogarty & Fogarty & Rick we’re going to do something together! Rick had a new album coming out, he just had to replace the Scratch vocals! Plus, he was gonna help Matthew & Gunnar with their careers! He found a lady to travel with, Helen Blair! She took great care of him, according to one of his twins! He had so much going for him! He really had a great last year! Remember the last chorus to Gypsy Pilot? “He lived everyday! He loved everybody & he hopes you do the same!”

Rick was scheduled to play 2 shows both sold out & was asked to play a 3rd which he did to another sold out crowd! Pat Upton never got over that the guys didn’t just take a commercial flight as he suggested, when the plane delayed them by 4 hrs with mechanical problems.

      The last time I read Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time, Rick Nelson was listed at 91. There was also a book released by Rolling Stone in 1982 (something about 25 years of rock 'n' roll where they rated the performers and each of their albums). It was written that Rick Nelson got a bad rap because he got his start on the family TV show, but that he was actually very talented.

    No idea about the history of the lyrics. I always pictured a backyard garden, not Madison Square Garden. However, the chorus is great for reminding us to be happy with ourselves & that happiness is an inside job -- don't give away your power to others.

    • @ToddSF
      @ToddSF 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Marcie Brown -- As I understand it, he participated in a 1972 concert at Madison Square Garden, that was featuring singers from the 1950's and 60's. When he came out and performed music in his new "rock-a-billy" style with long hair and 1970's clothing, he got booed off the stage by audience members who wanted the 1950's and early 1960's Rick Nelson singing the music he sang then. He wrote the song "Garden Party" in reaction to that experience, realizing, as the song says, that since you can't please everyone, you've got to please yourself. He'd been hurt by the experience and the song was to show that he realized being true to himself was worth the negative reaction he got from people who were self-righteous about their expectations of him. "Garden party", of course, as a metaphor for the infamous concert at Madison Square Garden.

    • @cynthiaennis3107
      @cynthiaennis3107 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToddSF almost...he didn’t get booed off the stage. It was 1971. He stayed & played another song, though he wanted to leave. He did not stay for the finale. He did already play the oldies, then when he played Honky Tonk Women is when he was supposedly booed, but that’s not even for certain.

      @@cynthiaennis3107 - Why do you say it's false? People who knew them (including family members, like David) admitted that the Nelsons were not what they portrayed on the TV show. Ozzie ran the show and his family. Rick's daughter was claimed to be premature, which she was not, but the image had to be maintained. And Rick had been a drug abuser, a womanizer, and has a son that he refused to recognize or support. I am a fan of the post-teen idol Ricky (having grown up with The Beatles), liking his country music, and was going to see him perform at The Palomino Club in North Hollywood, CA, but his plane crashed before his performance date.

    On this day in 1971 {October 15th} Rick Nelson played Madison Square Garden in New York City, and as most rock 'n rollers know this appearance inspired his last Top 10 hit, "Garden Party"...
    Eight months later on July 29th, 1972 "Garden Party" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #99; and exactly 14 weeks later on October 29th, 1972 it peaked at #6 {for 2 weeks} and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100...
    And on November 12th, 1972 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Canadian RPM 100 Singles chart {it also peaked at #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart}...
    It had been over eight years since his last Top 10 record; "For You" peaked at #6 {for 1 week} on February 9th, 1964 {all tolled between 1957 and 1972 he had seventeen Top 10 records, with two reaching #1, "Poor Little Fool" in 1958 and "Travelin' Man" in 1961}...
    He just missed having four #1 records when "A Teenager's Prayer" and "Stood Up" both peaked at #2 on the Top 100...

    I grew up with Rick Nelson, first I was a child when he was on Ozzie and Harriet. Than later, when he did this song I was married with 6 children. Now his twin sons are coming to Yuma to a 'Ricky Nelson Remembered' tribute. As long as his kids are around, he will live forever!

    And I LOVE this song, first time I heard it, it was with my mom in a car driving across half Sweden to my Grandma, I was about 8 years old. And every singel day from I heard it, I rememberd every word from this song (but I couldn't speak or english) and I knew how that song went in my head. And from that day, I love country music thanks to my mom.

    I'm sure most people know the story of the origin of this song. He was booed off stage. Just goes to show a bad moment in your life should just be a huge inspiration to turn it into something great. I hope the people who booed him off saw this and felt really bad.

    • @cynthiaennis3107
      @cynthiaennis3107 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, he didn’t leave the stage. They played all their songs before leaving it. He just didn’t participate in the finale.
      I hope they say it, as well!

    He wasn't just a pretty face pop star and a heart throb. He was a musician and a songwriter. Garden Party is one of those great songs that - I don't know how to say it - touches something deep and magical. Reminds me of a Dylan song. Poetry.

    I was always a huge Ricky Nelson fan. He was underrated because he grew up in front of America on his family's TV show. But for my money he was one of the best of his era. He was also a rockabilly, which was kind of surprising for a man who grew up in Beverly Hills, California. ❤😊

    Rick Nelson was a pioneer in the early days of rock n roll n still is an American Idol. When the British Invasion happened it was kinda a girl thing. The same as the Elvis thing. All good music. People miss Lennon just like the hundreds of others. As for Rick, he had nothing to hold his head down about. He was n is America's Legend.

    Interesting lyrics reflecting when he was invited to play a rock roll concert at Madison square gardens 1971
    When he played honky tonk woman a rolling stones number he was boo that's the ref it was time to leave. The people only wanted to here his old stuff not his new songs he was working on final ref was if memories are all I sang id rather drive a truck, this being a ref to Elvis who was driving truks before being famous.
    Johy b a good ref as chuck berry was on the bill too
    This was a very inspirational song inspired by events that happened at the garden party 1971
    A great performer singer-songwriter Ricky you will be sadly missed but your music lives on!

    I was 12 or 13 years old when Ricky Nelson was killed in that plane crash on FM 990 in DeKalb, Texas..I didn't have the foggiest idea who he was..But I remember seeing that plane go over our house just above the tree tops, and crashed about 4 or 5 miles away! In a town of about 1600 people that is really something big! It was a sad day for sure!
