"Mad Man Moon" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written! I have never grown tired of it. It still gives me goosebumps after 44 years! There are just a few other songs that have affected me that way. It's timeless to me! "One From the Vine" is another.

I don’t think Phill’s voice was EVER better than 75-85 era. Voice of honey and unique sound
It kills me to see him now unable to sing as he once did and unable to play his drums, life is cruel but he is forever saved on vinyl for the universe to appreciate.

They were a brilliant prog rock band Lance. However, i'm going to get a little biased here. Emerson Lake and Palmer, to me anyway, were the best during this era of music. Genesis were a close second and then I would say Yes....a close third.

Any group that can knock out suppers ready, at 21-22 are the best prog group, you need to see what they could do at an early age. I love prog rock, it has such great elements in it. People forget Genesis did 4 sold out shows at Wembley in 87 , fantastic night the gig I went to , Phil had the audience in the palm of his hands, not saying they peaked that week but cemented their place as a " premier" band. Nothing beats Phil and Chester playing together then Phil just walking back and starting his vocals again, magic , pure magic....

In the "Musical box" documentary, Peter Gabriel said that he had full confidence in the band continuing without him. And that he was not surprised by how good "A trick of the tail" turned out to be. He also lets it shine through in the lyrics of "Sollsbury Hill"
    "Tonight I don't need a replacement.
I told them what the smile on my face meant."

This is actually cooler than either of the other properly recorded versions, despite the lower recording quality, because the outro is more mysterious and abstract, drifts away like a grey rain rather than swirling out into colorful swirling rainbows; it has that hypnotic quality that the end of "Dancing Out with the Moonlit Knight" has. The "better version" is more agitated and psychedelic, but not quite as seductive; I like the dreamy stuff myself, that adolescent escapism...

Absolutely spot on. If Tony had learned how to write more accessible lyrics (a “failing” Mike mentioned a few times) his solo career and Genesis contributions would have been filled with hit singles to rival the Mechanics and Phil’s solo conquests. BUT, we would have been cheated out of songs that last 50 years, like ‘Mad Mad Moon’ has. I’ll take the eclectic, inaccessible Banks masterpieces any day.

Fantastic! I knew "It's Yourself" from the 3 CD set "Genesis Archives 2". Didn't know about Tony's keyboard motif (ARP ProSoloist synth)from "Mad Man Moon". Thanks for sharing the information about the various release edits.
The 1970s Genesis body of work is simply mind blowing. Many treasures still to be discovered (hint: live recordings/bootlegs yet to be made available). My all time favorite band. Their music always takes you places - no filler, just pure genius! Love Phil's pure voice in this early (soon to be front man) phase, beautifully blending in with the instrumental textures. I listened to Genesis back in the day on very poor, cheap/thin, crackly vinyl releases (killer sounding productions on heavy top notch vinyl already were around!). They still became my favorite band and remained ever since - by far! The 1994 re-masters blew me away!!!

Christian Schonberger yes, no other band takes me to the places that Genesis do, they can have that medieval vibe or the old England Victorian vibe, or many other vibes, I just love the sounds Tony got out of his keyboard rigs in the 70s, just so ethereal. Some of the voice tapes on the mellotron blew me away.

They obviously made very good use of some sections of It's Yourself in Los Endos, but the mellow section from around 4:20 is just gorgeously trippy. Shame to lose that from the album proper, having said that ATOTT is still my single Genesis album anyway. They just hit out of the park. It was serendipitous that Genesis felt driven to prove they could survive & thrive at the exact same moment they reached the peak of their powers.

From the place I'm acessing it, we have an advertising RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of this, so the two songs end up split again - that's OUTRAGEOUS, because the cool thing about this upload is to enjoy the obvious conection between MMM and It's Yourself. Dude.... sometimes advertisement misses the shot.... that's the case.

Dave Hentschel was also there on the Duke album. So, he helped Genesis slowly transitioning to a newer sound, helping them adjust to the sound of a new decade.

I was lucky to see Genesis in Ohio for the selling England by the pound tour. The lamb lies down on Broadway and trick of the tail tour to me. They are the greatest Prague band ever was. I do miss Peter Gabriel in the band because it gave it such a mystic aura to the band, the first two albums after Gabriel the same thing but then they started to change course like so many bands and go top 40 commercial but that’s the way it is most bands are better when they start off with their first few albums and then they need the pay offPeter Gabriel and Genesis and Phil Collins and Genesis were good bands. It’s just amazing how Collins and Gabriel’s voice was so close cause some people didn’t even notice the change lies down on Broadway to trick the tail. Remember that Gabriel singing. So much good music years ago.

Terrific bridge. I have both versions of It's Yourself. One point of clarification, however; IY was not included on the studio side of Three Side Live. Those tracks included:
Paperlate, You Might Recall, Me and Virgil, Open Door and Evidence of Autumn.

    Stepping out the back way
    Hoping nobody sees
    Leaving can't be easy
    Think how I feel
    What can you say?
    What can you do?
    Why can't you see
    It's yourself I love
And don't you know, I'm not asking
You must have made up your mind
It is worth the pain you're causing
    To who you're leaving behind
    What can you say?
    What can you do?
    Why can't you see
    It's yourself I love
Don't you know, I'd like some answers
You could give me a call
    I hardly know the reason
But I really don't feel good at all
    Where will you go?
    Where will you be?
    Where can I try
    It's yourself I love

Also, the "new" part (I hadn't heard this non-fade version) reminds me of the closing section of Dancing with moonlit knight (which I guess was also cut... when they played the song live it was longer).
    Haunting.
