    A historic victory for both countries. For Canada, their youngest ever Olympic champion and the first Canadian to ever win 4 medals in a single Summer Olympic games (she was 7th at the turn too). For the United States, first black woman to ever medal in an individual swimming event, and both a gold and an Olympic record at that. Such a great race.

    • @MrVpassenheim
      @MrVpassenheim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      healed1337 Yep. She's a once in a generation swimmer, much like Katie Ledecky, except I think she has the potential of being a more all-around swimmer. If she stays healthy and is consistent, she has the potential of being the best ever. She will need to diversify and be consistent for at least a few more years before that can be entertained though.

    • @benstoddard9583
      @benstoddard9583 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +MrVpassenheim The 200m freestyle seems to be the threshold between Katie Ledecky and Penny Oleksiak's skill set. The women's 200m freestyle swim could very well be the most exciting race of the meet in four years from now if they both keep improving.

    • @MrVpassenheim
      @MrVpassenheim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ben Stoddard I don't know about that. I see that for Sarah Sjostrom, but Penny's already better than both Sarah and Katie were at that age at that distance. Penny swam a 1:54.9 relay anchor in Rio to Katie's 1:53.7. I think Katie was a 1:56 low at 16, so Penny's about a half second faster and could possibly improve her endurance even when endurance was Katie's wheelhouse from the start. I think the threshold becomes the 400 in this case.

    Just asking out of curiosity, it is impossible for 2 or more guys to touch to the walls at the same EXACT moment. If they have the same timing at centi-second level (2-digit resolution) then why didn’t they examine with slow motion camera and go to the milisecond level (3-digit resolution)? Is it well defined legislation of the IOC that if two contestants have the same time with resolution until centisecond that they both are counted to have the same rank, or what? I’m pretty sure we have sufficient technology to detect who did indeed finish “earlier”.
    P.s: I am not the cruel guy who wants to remove one of the gold medals, contrarily I’m very excited about that but I am just asking out of curiosity.

      Oleksiak is Canadian, not American, and US coverage of the olympics is always heavily US focused. Maybe it shouldn't be (I'd certainly like to see more of other countries) but them not covering Oleksiak is very standard for the norm.

      Of course it should NOT. The Olympics is, obviously, INTERNATIONAL.
      And sport is all about struggle & rivalry.
      Now, in Tokyo, Oleksiak has just done it AGAIN to Simone Manuel, overcoming a 0.65 second deficit in the anchor leg of the 4x100m freestyle, to catch up to her by the flip turn and beat her to the finish by only THREE HUNDREDTHS of a second, snatching away the silver medal by a margin no human eye can discern.
      THAT is sport!

    I heard they sent Penny to Rio to understand the Olympics, so in 2020 she'd be able to have experience, and in 2024 she'd be competing for a medal. Methinks the timetable was a wee bit off.

      What I heard was she was training to be sent to the 2020 olympics as her first Olympics, but then she improved a lot over a short period of time so got sent to the 2016 one and exceeded everyone’s expectations

    Don't you think there were supposed to be 4 people in the podium? Two for gold and two for silver and bronze. I only see three, i.e., two for golds and one for bronze. The Swedish was supposed to get the silver and the Australian a bronze.

      Swimmers and Olympic athletes usually have a different school schedule because their training is so intense, but they still learn. It is important after all :)
