Anthony Ervin went through similar circumstances as Chris Jacobs did back in 1988 (the Biondi era). They are both really motivating swimmers! I love watching them both.
Lockon Stratos Not really, as he stopped swimming competitively in 2003 and only made his comeback on the 2012 Olympics. And it's not as easy to win gold medals in the Olympics as you put it. So, what he achieved here is absolutely incredible!
I like how Nathan is so happy for his bronze, I mean, it's great to win a medal even if it's bronze. I'd die to win at least the bronze. But it's also good to be ambitious and go for the gold.
I think Nathan Adrian also seems genuinely happy for his friend and teammate, Anthony Ervin. They were also both on the UC Berkeley swim team, I believe.
Winners of 50m freestyle at the olympics by age: 23, 21, 25, 19, 27, 30, 21, 22...35. Ervin is not only the oldest winner, but he's also the youngest gold medalist over 50m freestyle. To win at 35, when the average age of a winner is less than 24 years of age is nothing short of astonishing. It will Never be repeated.
It just blows my mind because a lot of Olympians only go to 1 or 2 Olympics and struggle to back up their gold. Ervin came back 16 years later and said "yall forgot about me huh"
Anthony ervin is my favourite freestyle swimmer, he accelerate in the last 20m whom the others cant and his techniques is perfect. I respect his life and minds. He is humble and will always helps the one who deserve it. Anthony ervin is the bigman in freestyle swims court. Thankyous ervin 🙋 👏☝👍
I don't care what anyone says, but Ervin is an insanely good swimmer. Say if Ervin hadn't retired and was training all these while, I can assure you he would of won Manadou by a larger margin.
True story. I went to Anthony Ervin's book reading in Berkeley. He and his co author were generous. They let people try on Anthony's gold medal. I had my photo taken with him and was so flustered that i nearly walked out of the bookstore wearing his gold medal. 😂😂 One of the most hilarious moments of my life.
I met Ervin when he was practicing at the pool in Long Beach. I was flattered and I could barely say anything to him. I just asked to take a pic with him. The result? Mins later everyone's lining up to take pics with him. I heard him say," I better get out of here!"
he didnt stay in shape the whole time. When he retired he joined a band and toured the world. a documantary on him would be great. Hes gone through a lot. as a kid we made a thing called zones (only top 2 in an event for 18 and under made it) and i remember he got kicked out for catching a mattress on fire in the hotel. haha i think he was 15 at the time.
@ Hassan 1) Manadou is the world record holder for 50m freestyle (short course) 2) He got the gold in the last olympics (London 2012) 3) He missed out on gold here by 0.01 seconds 4) He got beat by a 35 year old man haha
Somewhat misleading comment from the female commentator when the three medalists are on the stand around 9:49. "He's not the tallest medalist...For those of you who think that you need to be the tallest to win the race, you don't." No, you don't. But it sure doesn't hurt your chances. Anthony Ervin is hardly short at 6'3" but Florent Manadou and Nathan Adrian are 6'6". (Katie Ledecky 6'0")
nmtg Probably intended in a relative sense. Yes, in the finals of the Olympic 50 the guys are 6-6, but in age group youth swimming that won't be the case of course.
"Manaudou came back better than him in the last 15 meters" Huh? Look at this race. Manaudou had a foot lead from the start! There is no question who the fastest swimmer on top of the water was - Ervin. Yes, Manaudou came back "a little", but not to the extent that Ervin did. This was a perfect example of how commentators get the story COMPLETELY wrong. It was the opposite of what she said - Manaudou got the early lead from the start, Ervin caught him after 30m and held on for the win. With a correction on the start, Ervin's got a 21.2 in him for sure. Swim worlds next year!
@@paulbrownsr It's simple. Look at 4:27 - Manaudou's in lane 4 and Ervin's to his left. Manaudou had the better start. Ervin had to come back on him the final 35 meters.
I'm not talking about the title as fastest swimmer in history, rather fastest swimmer in the world currently. Usain bolt holds the world record for 100m at 9.58. He is the fastest ever. After he retires whoever wins the 100m will be the fastest in the world.
Pratically yes. But i prefer 100m freestyle because is more technical and represents the "main" race. 50 freestyle is too much "random" and is just power.
amazing accomplishment,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wow........after 16 years, came back an reclaimed his gold medal.... going up against younger competitors... amazing..
I remember watching this in 2016 in a French channel, Laure Manodou cried for her little brother. She felt so sorry for him. The silver medal is always the least enjoyed.

What a story. He got gold in 2000, then used drugs and alcohol, almost died, turned his life around, then won gold in Rio.
Anthony Ervin went through similar circumstances as Chris Jacobs did back in 1988 (the Biondi era). They are both really motivating swimmers! I love watching them both.

Jajaja, and I do 47 in the hundred fly. Come one guy...
@Yong Geun Song Bet you can't do it at olympics
Yonggeun did anyone ask?
Gold in 2000, Gold in 2016. What a comeback!
Allan Shrestha he could have gotten gold in 2004, 2008 and 2012, 5 golds
Lockon Stratos Not really, as he stopped swimming competitively in 2003 and only made his comeback on the 2012 Olympics. And it's not as easy to win gold medals in the Olympics as you put it. So, what he achieved here is absolutely incredible!
Allan Shrestha but if he kept swimming and never retired then he could very well medaled every Olympics

I love watching this event. No holds barred, just straight up who's faster. Reminds me of the playground races in elementary school, but in water.
I like how Nathan is so happy for his bronze, I mean, it's great to win a medal even if it's bronze. I'd die to win at least the bronze. But it's also good to be ambitious and go for the gold.

It's his first medal in the 50m free in the Olympics after not qualifying for the event in 2012.
Happy to just make the olympics

Ervin is like red wine... "Better with ages".

CheChox1234 I agree!!!😍😍😍
16 years ago, he win the gold medal. 16 years later, he win the gold medal, again. Now, he was 35 years old. A story about Anthony Ervin
Nguyễn Phương Thuận ur math don't add up bro
Nick Cinnamon why? 16 years ago, not that he was 16.
the past of win is won...

oh you swim so lazy
TVStealer there is no way you're that slow. That means that your 100m race time is more than approximately 43 seconds.
You can't help but 'B.Proud' of all these Olympic swimmers😂👌🏻
This needs to be seen by the world
That is art. Make this a meme someone!
good one, but the the EMOJIS gave me cancer

I wonder how many viewers got your reference.
A 10.07 minute long video at a 21 seconds race
Alba Vendelboe-Schack lol so true
ikr
Alba Vendelboe-Schack and they can't even take 5 mins to show the 100m freestyle a longer race
Alba Vendelboe-Schack they can't even post a 200m butterfly
The athmosphere and pre-race rituals are also great. They give me chills
Ervin won gold at 35. Michael Phelps would be 35 in the Tokyo Olympics. This may change the Goats decision...
Lochte would be 36 on Tokyo, and Lochte will be in Tokyo
Daniel Cavalier Lochte is life😍I don't even care what happened at Rio.
I dont care about what happened in Rio. Ryan is one of the greatest swimmers ever. He is my fav, and I know he will win a gold in Tokyo
Daniel Cavalier Agreed. Age is just a number for Lochte
michael phelps should go to tokyo for the very last time
Phenomenal overcoming. Victory of life. You're the guy, A. Ervin!
when i first read the name simonas bilis i was like for a second "simon biles? 😐" 😂

MANADOU AND ERVIN, MANADOU AND ERVIN! ERVIN, ERVIN, ERVINNNNN! lmao the commentator

This was probably one of the most unexpected things I've seen at the Olympics besides that 3 way tie
I don't care what anyone says, but Ervin is an insanely good swimmer. Say if Ervin hadn't retired and was training all these while, I can assure you he would of won Manadou by a larger margin.
I just have to comment about that huge goofy smile that Nathan Adrian has ahahahahahahh :) makes me happy for him :)
The one that wins the bronze actually is the happiest man! why not be happy for whatever the result is.
Wow...Anthony Ervin....50 Free gold at 35! That's so impressive given the nature of that race..
btw those smile from Adrian..make my day. LoL!

Congrats Anthony! The book by Ervin, Chasing Water, is great. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for this recommendation. Also very well reviewed by the Library Journal
Manadou was so sad he couldn't even smile for camera :')
Understandable he was so close to winning gold
Anyone watching this in 2020 wishing the olympics were on right now 😢
Had to comeback here after watching Tokyo finals. The commentating and drama here is way better. manadou and ervin!
Manaudou, Manaudou and Errrrvin, Manaudou and Errrrrvin, *ERRRRVIN*

I can’t blame him 😂 one picture is ok after practice but you swarmed him
He is amazing as to stay in this shape after so many years

Patrick Murphy he did a lot if drugs and alcohol too, had depression, went to rehab maybe
He won gold at the age of 35 ,what a victory after 16 years😮
God bless you all have great holidays!
Manadou was so frustrated by losing to Ervin. Haha I love it.
I can understand why...
why?
@ Hassan
1) Manadou is the world record holder for 50m freestyle (short course)
2) He got the gold in the last olympics (London 2012)
3) He missed out on gold here by 0.01 seconds
4) He got beat by a 35 year old man haha
He looks so pissed lol
SOlson pissed of himself I think
He finally replaced the first gold medal that he had donated. Well done Ervin!! :D
Thank you for uploading!
aww ervin and adrian making the us proud😊
Looking at their reactions, you would think Adrian got the golden medal and Manaudou got the bronze..
When you get sooooo close to gold it's hard to be content with silver
I think Adrian is just a very happy guy in general, and it shows.
If Anthony Earvin was a beast 16 years ago... I think in this case he was a Gladiator until the Manadou last rush.
Ervin is forever young
Me encanta como camina Natham Adrian😁👍
Dont think ben is gonna be too proud of that result
Sooo happy for Ervin :)
He finally gets a replacement gold! Good job Ervin! :D
Tandy's jump start is IMMACULATE!
Admirable
Bro i'm absolutely stunned at how at 35 years of age he beat swimmers almost a decade younger than him
Ervin is a legend.
The Brad Tandy start at 4:20 is just unbelievable!
Watch Brad Tangy's start he's in front until the 25m mark
im obsessed with ervin
4:10 Amo muito quando o brasileiro fiz o símbolo da Cruz, me fiz emocional, que Deus abençoe todos esses homens
É lindo!
LOOK AT THIS! THIS MAN IS 2 TIMES OLDER THAN THEM ALL AND HE STILL WON!
Wait, did they swim 50M so fast without taking a single breath?? they must have gigantic lungs.
It's only for few seconds not even a minutes. Go try
Nice Adrian happy for ever

Unbelievable swim for Ervin and Manadou. A hundredth of a second separated the two.
So is the winner of this race the fastest swimmer in the world? Just like the winner of 100m in running?

Anthony Ervin swam in London 2012 as well and came in 5th
amazing accomplishment,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wow........after 16 years, came back an reclaimed his gold medal.... going up against younger competitors... amazing..
50m freestyle is the most toughest and competitive event in olympics

I would love to see a documentary or a book about Ervin’s career
there's chasing water, although it was published a few months before the rio olympics
This is a remarkable story....just woww❤
Manadou and Ervin...Ervin Ervin!!
