    Top job on them spacers. Time doesn't matter, it's not of the essence, the finished product matters and those are spot on!

  • @michaeljohnson-li5nn

    Quick tip that may help you when you turn similar parts. When you come to the parting off operation just bring in the parting tool and drive it into the material 3 to 4mm. You can then withdraw the parting off tool and index to a single point 45 degree tool. Bring this tool slowly up to the part and let it take off the burr on the O/D of the item being parted off. Swap the tool back to the original tool and continue to part off. This will give you a nice 45 degree chamfer on the O/D.

    Nice job especially the lathe work, gets easier with practice, but don’t beat yourself up over the time it took the main thing is they are a perfect fit, top job, 👍👍👍👍 thanks for posting.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you mate, I have to agree, that the results at the end compensate you for the time invested, all four fit perfectly and there were at least 3 variables to get right, bearing in mind they have to go between the yokes with a nice snug push fit, and not so tight they crack, so I don't care how long they took really now I know they're perfect!!

  • @szbalogh
    @szbalogh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Those "plastic" rings are rubber originally. Replaced on my Legend a few months ago. Ordered factory original parts from worldoftriumph. They sent nice soft new rubber rings ;) Alternatively, the fork dust seals turned upside down can be used.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Blimey rubber? The ones I have here literally shatter when you drop them on the floor, so if they were ever rubber, goodness knows what 20yrs has done to them! They haven't shrunk or perished at all, literally become terribly brittle, more like bakelite, so either your rubber ones are genuine and these are a poor replacement someone fitted, or Triumph saw the flaw in the plastic ones and upgraded them to rubber?! Either way, they're done now and am really pleased with them!

    • @szbalogh
      @szbalogh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Moonfleet41 Mine were the same brittle like on your bike. Could remove them in pieces.

      Thanks Hughie, I can now see the benefits of a bigger machine as I slowly find the limitations of this one... even simple things like a bigger chuck that can hold stock wider than 25mm, and something I can turn slow enough to cut a thread with, but am soon to be getting some 3Phase power, so next year I may be shopping for a 'proper' machine and I think there's gonna be a lot around on the market and, naturally, the key requirement will be something I can use that QCTP on! @@Moonfleet41 I thought it was great that you found another way. I have just bought a wee F650 as a winter bike and discovered the front brake light switch is such a poor design, instead of plug in terminals, they are soldered. The vibes on this single thumper as you can imagine, they don't last and to replace the whole switch is too expensive, in fact I changed the whole master cylinder, which came with the switch with normal terminal connectors and a lever, for less money. If the switch should ever fail then it'll be far cheaper to replace, also unwittingly, I got one for a similarly powered bike. The brake has never been good since I got so stripped, cleaned and replaced the slider boots but it was still rubbish, the next move was new pads but one day on the drive, the hose burst! Sprayed a jet of brake fluid everywhere so I thought maybe the master cylinder rating was too high but I've no knowledge about that or if it makes any difference and since fitting a new steel hose, I've had no further issues and the brake is getting better, I tink new pads would help because she's been parked for a while before I bought her. Anyway sorry about all the waffle, I love those type of positive future proofing upgrades. Thanks again.

    Hey Delboy! Hope you and Penny are well. What are your thoughts on batteries please? I now have a 2010 XJR1300 and I find the battery is getting weak but it is is the original. My main issue is that my bike is kept in an underground car park and no access to power for a tender and sometimes I won't use her for weeks. I have been thinking about lithium ion so it doesn't drain so much but does it require a special charging unit? Is it worth the jump yet? Or do I just go OEM again and try to fire her more often?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi again Tor, good to hear from you sir.. i think the Lithium batteries are pretty expensive, and you will need a charger that applies to Lithium, so it's a double expense... plus im not sure that they will last any longer if left untouched than a good healthy regular battery.. For years i have used the Motobatt Glass mat batteries.. they have higher cranking power than a regular OEM battery, and cost about half as much.. For charging have you maybe thought about a solar cell battery charger, they only need regular light, not bright sunshine, and they don't cost much more than a regular minder..!

    Surely the bare metal would need an etching primer to help the paint stick

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This particular paint John is formulated for bare metal, it's a durable stone chip paint that never dries rock solid, it's dry to the touch obviously and can be handled, but the design is that it stays flexible enough to resist chipping and flaking, and I too was skeptical of it's claims to bond on to bare metal, so on my Harley project whilst I scuffed and sanded all the bare metal parts, and laid them up with 3 thick coats of this, I left one part (a fuse box cover) in flawless clean shiny chrome, no sanding, no primer, nothing... laid up 3 coats of this and it's still fine and flawless to this day! The trick is to use a 'tack' coat to start with, just a light patchy coat over the surface, give it 5mins and then the first coat to cover... and naturally everything totally de-greased, give it a try mate, it works every time!

    There's nothing wrong with making parts because you want to, and you can, (I do it all the time), but there is a part number, and they are available.
    Triumph part #T2700340
    Available from Sprint Manufacturing in the UK for twelve quid. www.triumphparts.co.uk/product/headlight-support-tube-rubbers-t2700340/
    and from eBay for fifteen www.ebay.com/itm/Triumph-Trident-750-900-Headlight-Support-Tube-Grommet-Rubber-Mount-T2700340-/293169019832
    :-)
    These bits are rubber and were originally pliable. Old rubber parts turn rock-hard with age, it's the nature of the beast and most old rubber bits do it eventually. If forty-plus years of working on old bikes has taught me anything, it's taught me that. :-)

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers mate, at the very least it's £15 I've saved and I got to practice my turning skills too, and if they turn to brittle crap after a few years, then my delrin ones certainly won't, so in some ways, this is an upgrade for sure! Thanks for watching buddy, have a good weekend!

    Del. One thing you keep repeating is that this is a 20 year old bike and that just about everything you touch is worn out or needs some kind of servicing. I’m in NZ, and a twenty year old bike is not exactly old. Does that mean that every bike for sale of this age and over needs ALL this work doing. (You said the same on the busa). Well for most people, most of it is either too difficult/technical/expensive or time consuming. There’s no way you could afford to pay a dealer for all this work either, so ....what do we have to do? Buy newer bikes? Not meaning to be critical BTW

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin. It all depends on the care and consideration a bike has had in that 20 years mate.. im sure you agree that 20 years of loving care and maintenance is better then 5 years of neglect ! And sadly that Hayabusa was horribly neglected for it's whole life, we have wet weather and salted roads for half the year over here, so certainly anything approaching 20yrs old needs close attention, you can buy newer bikes if you want, but even 5yrs of neglect in bad weather could leave them in a terrible state.
