That’s one of the first videos of the person actually moving the coop thanks so much

Now, having said that, I recently changed the method for moving the coop. The wheels were just not doing the job so I finally ripped them off and build a set of skids or skis out of 3" steel tubing with the 2 ends bent up a bit like a toboggan. Now we have to use the tractor or an ATV to move it but it's smooth and easy and doesn't break.
I'll do an update soon.

That is one fine chicken tractor!!!!!! Wish I had the plans for it.
I could make up a crude set of plans but every small farmer or landowner has different needs. What works for me may not be best
for you.
Do what I did. Measure your space. Decide on how many chickens you want. Draw a rough sketch. Sleep on it and in the morning, lay out the 4X4 base and start building. Some of my dimensions were chosen for odd reasons. For example, the screen that I wanted to use comes in 3' widths. Hence the house in 3' wide. And so on.

Alec, I've enjoyed your SCUBA videos very much and it looks like your hitting the ball out the the field again with this series. What a great start! This is one of the best chicken tractors I've seen; very convenient, mobile and well thought out.
My dad isn't very far behind you in years, and my folks were finally able to retire out of the hustle and bustle of city life to a nice bit of land. I forwarded him your series and I'm sure he'll enjoy it as well given he has a similar do-it-yourself background and a can-do attitude.

The old DIY and can-do attitudes from the 60's and 70's is disappearing.
We just got back from Florida and were visiting an old friend of mine. Brian is a great guy and very smart but he didn't have a dad like mine. He asked me to take his older BMW for a ride because he was worried about a squeal in the engine. So we started it up and I listened to the water pump, power steering pump and alternator using a long wooden spoon stuck in my ear. He was watching me with an amused look - probably thinking I was going crazy. But I knew then that it wasn't those things. I told him to get me a bar of soap and, with the engine stopped, I rubbed the bar on the 2 belts - inside and outside since the serpentine belt rolls on both sides. Anyway, when he re-started the engine there was no noise - dead quiet. You should have seen the look on his face. He thought I was a genius but it's just an old mechanic's trick. Your dad would understand.

Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for a very portable backyard coop for my neighborhood yard. Cause my wife thinks the neighbors would object, but we have a good size yard and I’m only talking six birds max, plus we live in a unincorporated subdivision. This is perfect, it looks good, light, and easy to move around. Thank you very much!
I have made some changes, Booths. The wheels were a pain in the a**. It may be because our ground is rough. So I got rid of them and installed 2 long tubes with a slight upward bend at each end like a skid or set of skis. Now we hook the chicken tractor to our ATV or real tractor and simply slide it to a new location.
Otherwise it's great.

Fabulous build. I'd remove the bottom of the coop and exchange it for a strong mesh. That way the chickens poop falls directly onto the ground .

My nephew when he was 14 didn't know what a tire gauge was, I said, "you had a bike, didn't you, didn't you ever fill up the tires and check the pressure"?????
I remember when I was little playing with the tire gauge and the tire pump just because it was fun!
I can relate to that story. My problem was if I didn't understand how it worked, I took it apart to find out. Not always 100% re-assembled correctly (my mom and dad were not always pleased), but it did start me on understanding how things work to fix almost anything. Thanks for sharing Laura and hope he learns how to change a flat tire before driving.
@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch I didn't know how to change a flat tire when I started driving, but my dad came over and show me how when I did have a flat.
My father was a landlord and I often ended up helping him with the houses, he taught me how to use everything from basic tools to power tools, I don't regret learn those skills and I don't know how many times I've saved money because I was able to fix something myself and not have to call someone else to come fix it for me.

Sorry Michael but unless you are a Vulcan and can mind-meld to me, it was all in my head as I went along. Watch latter videos as I made improvements to it and added Nite Guard lights. Doodle it out and it maybe better than mine.

Lot of good ideas here...I am going to make one a little wider for a dozen birds. I'm thinking on some kind of lever acting wheels to let it down to the ground. I like the mid mounted wheel design--my wife or my 8 year old or maybe 8 and 6 year old together need to be able to move it around.
That's a great idea!
Yeah, it's not good to have the frame up off the ground with predators around. What I'm doing is mounting the axle to a scissor lift inverted inside and above each wheel like where a car shock absorber would be. Got the idea from a video for a "Cove Products" chicken coop that you can look up.
We did our own as well. Put it on the grass to give the chickens fresh grass everyday. However, chicken will dug up the soil. We coul n't eave it still for 20 mins and they would dig deep pot holes in the grass. After a few days this, we had pot holes everywhere. It made a mess and had lots of repairs. So we moved it onto a slab of cement and there it sat for the last 3 years. I wouldn't do one again unless it was a continually moving chicken tractor to prevent them from digging.
Good solution for their digging. I keep my in the horse fields so they can dig all they want. It also protects them from predators and the horse and my mule practically guard them.

AWESOME chicken tractor video .... would you share any structural plans ... it has to stay together when I move it ...
I'm looking to make something for say 10 to 12 chickens ... any ideas ???
Could I make it in TWO pieces ... using a slide in panel (between the two) to close off the side with the chickens in it - when I move it ???
I don't have actual plans for it Art. I drew a rough sketch with some dimensions on it as a guide but I changed things as I built it. There is no bottom on it. The chickens are free to scratch the earth and that's one beauty of it. It's healthier for them and easier to clean. When we move ours, pretty much every week, we do so early in the morning when the chickens are still in the coop. The coop door slides shut and we move it. If there are chickens out in the run, we simply move it slowly and they scoot along with it.
It's 16' long and 3' wide and we easily had 10 chickens in it.
You know, as we discovered, that there is no on/off switch on the chickens. That is, if you have 12 chickens, you'll get a dozen eggs every day, 7 days a week, every week. You can't stop it when you're away for the weekend or on holidays.
We use a lot of eggs but not a dozen a day, every day. Think about that.
For strength, the base that runs around the bottom, the part that the wheels are fastened to, is made of 4X4 Pressure Treat wood fastened together at the corners with lag screws and metal building plates. It's not going anywhere. Everything else is built on top of that. I have 2X4s running vertically up from those 4X4s and 2X3s for all horizontal braces, all screwed firmly together.
I also used 2 long 2X4s at the 3' height running the full length as an extra barce and also to act as handles. You can see the handles sticking out. That's the end of that long 2X4. I just drilled and put a 1 1/4" dowel between the projecting ends of the 2X4s.

Hey Alex... this is the size of coop I’m looking for. I’m not on a ranch, but in a Monastery. And I’m wanting to start Chickens and Bees.... but let’s start with chickens.
I’ve seen several post from a couple of years ago asking for plans, and I read what you said to LaPlam... but was wondering how f you have made any yet? I talked to our grounds guy about helping me and he wants plans.... because, I usually see it in my head what to do and how to make it work....and it’s hard
Sorry Teresa but I never planned this on paper first. I'm old school hands on and started with a doodle then went to cutting, fitting, changing, cutting, nailing and repeat. Reminder to look up Part 2 where I added tweaks based on the first models few months of egg production.

I put a removable bottom panel under the roost so in the warm months they crap on the ground and I don't have to clean it out for half the year

Nice what size hardware cloth did you use?
The sides are 1/2" hardware cloth. The wire tops are 2" but they're more like a pig fence material - much heavier wires to they don't sag. I just used what i had around the ranch or from my neighbors. My neighbors love me. I'm always cleaning up junk around their farms! Check out KIJIJI or Craigslist.

Actually Lorraine, as with many of my projects, I made a rough sketch and then started to build.
Sure I made some mistakes and changes along the way but it works and saves a lot of time.
It's best to build it to suit your space and circumstances anyway.

I'll do a complete walk-around. It won't be for a few weeks though. I have to dig it out of the snow.
We're just starting to think about what chickens we'll get this year. We would normally keep our chickens (and fresh eggs) over the winter but since we went to Africa for a month in Nov/Dec, we gave them away and will get new ones in April.

i'd be worried about critters getting in from underneath since it's perpetually up. I'd make the wheels retractable.
I looked at a system to raise the wheels but it started to get quite complicated.
The tractor weighs quite a bit so any such set-up would have to be very substantial.
I'm about to do an update on this tractor. I have removed the wheels and replaced them with skids or skis like a snowmobile.
The wheels were the Achilles heel of the tractor so they are gone. That also solves the critter issue since now it sits on the ground.

I do wonder what our world is coming to... I'm at the shopping mall right now to pick up my laptop from a certain fruit branded store after a screen replacement and we have armed police on patrol inside the mall itself with military grade weaponry on them. Doesn't bother me as but considering British police typically don't carry firearms its something that I see some shoppers look at with wide eyes.
The fact that you find it odd is encouraging.
In many countries it's completely normal to see police with automatic weapons at the ready at gas stations, convenience stores, etc. It's not uncommon in the USA and of course, quite normal even in Germany and France. England is still pretty civilized.
We seldom if ever see that in Canada. Good diving here too Peter (hint).

You're of course absolutely right and I echo the same thoughts about Canada. I hear Canada is truly beautiful, a chap I used to work with used to go because you also have fantastic snow.

Is a 3 foot square big enough for 6 chickens?
For a nesting/sleeping roost 3 ft x 3 ft may be ok. The more "range" they have to run and feed the happier mine are and better number and size of eggs.
The only tool you mentioned that I did not know was the red robin screwdriver.
How about a "robinson" screwdriver? Google it as the best there is.

@@diggingwithdavid5732 It is actually a square tipped screwdriver called a "Robertson screwdriver". It is a brand name like "Phillip's head" is too. A Philips is actually called a crosshead screwdriver. But, like many things, we use the brand name. Much like Kleenex instead of tissue.

predators never try to dig thru the gap between 2x4 and the ground?
They tried but our burro Winnie, the 3 horses, 2 cats and my 12 gauge quietly say go away.

For how many chickens is this
From 10 to 12 knowing 1 or 2 can be lost for any number of reasons.
Don't blame that boy for not knowing what hammer to pick up. Blame his dad for not teaching him.

You can buy this same design at Tractor Supply for about 350.
They have some good coops. I've seen them and if you haven't the skills nor ambition to built you own, it's a good solution.
Examining the coops available at Tractor Supply, TSC and other places is what helped me decide to build my own. I'd really like it to last a long time.

Do you have problems with rodents getting under the bottom with it elevated like that?
No, if the chickens don't peck it to death, our 2 barn cats will. Double security!

My whole family is contractors I can build pretty good I can farm train horses and do all that but I can not fix a engine I’m 15 and I can do most things but to fix a engine I suck at mechanics
So did I until I wanted a motor bike and fixed up an old one. If you want something bad, learning is a good way to get it. May take time but your young and lots of time to become a smart old dude like me.
How much did this cost to build?
Not much as i had most materials around. I think only the wheels were purchased and more chicken wire, so maybe, $30 out of pocket.

with it having a metal roof it can easily ventilate under the ridge,since you can weld why didn"t you just make the frame out of 1x1x14ga sq tubing ? what is the need for a door inside the coop ?
I have lots of lumber around - 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 and 4x4. So it was just easier to build it from wood.
Plus that way my wife can paint it every year or so.
Sometimes you may want to lock the chickens in their small coop. In case of predators or if it's really cold.

Whats the Dimensions and the weight?
The coop is 3' wide & 15' long.
Built with 4x4 pressure treated base, 2x4 lumber & 1/2" plywood walls, I can only guess at the weight. I'd say about 200 pounds.

What about predators
Did lose one to a predator but it also met it's end. Look at video #61 Great Solar Motion Lights, I put Nite Guard on the tractor and no losses. Also the horses take care of the chickens too.
I raise chickens as well. I found playing a FM radio close to the Coop is extremely effective especially with Coyotes and Foxes. However, I have found some Foxes learn that the radio is no threat and still try to raid the Coop. This is pretty rare but it does happen.

Sorry, I still don't get it. How in the hell do you keep predators from digging under the bottom framework at night if this structure is not permanently secured???
We've not had a big problem with predators.
I suppose if it's a concern you'd have to extend the screen into the ground or maybe put a steel plate down a bit all around.
We've had a couple of skunks but managed to get rid of them and we have lots of foxes and coyotes but so far no problem.

You can’t have chickens in there man. There are no space in there. Try to live in there yourself. You wouldn’t last a half day. So please make it bigger and no wheels on it. Hens needs an environment in the run and not only gras.

In fact, we let the chickens out every day after collecting the eggs to roam the farm and we put them back to bed at dusk.
One evening we accidentally left one chicken out overnight - free, you might say.
In the morning we found his feathers. Apparently, he had a great time out of the coop!!!

I’ve seen several post from a couple of years ago asking for plans, and I read what you said to LaPlam... but was wondering how f you have made any yet? I talked to our grounds guy about helping me and he wants plans.... because, I usually see it in my head what to do and how to make it work....and it’s hard
