Hot Harley-Davidson Engines Are The Stock Ones

- Hot Harley-Davidson engines are the stock ones, performance modifications don't necessarily mean more heat output from your Harley. A properly tuned and fueled Harley-Davidson even heavily modified will actually run cooler than the bone stock Harley-Davidson motorcycles on the show room floor. Rich performance tunes actually cool down engine while producing more horsepower and torque. Performance parts make the engine more efficient and allow the breathe better over stock. This mean more air in and exhaust out, if properly fueled a performance Harley-Davidson engine will run cooler than a stock Harley-Davidson Engine.

What kind of difference in heat did you notice adding performance parts to your Harley-Davidson with proper tuning?
I have to dislike your videos now. You remove the little fart at the end of the videos. Next thing you’ll know you’ll start doing videos on Hondas. Slippery slopes.
FP3 tuner and Redline oil dropped my oil temps by 12 degrees, and tho that doesn't sound like all that much, my right leg definitely notices - or in this case - DOESN'T notice _anything_ at a stoplight. Way cooler.
Edit: Also should say I have an S&S stealth Mini Teardrop intake and V&H Short Shots exhaust with no baffles and Thunder Torque inserts; but I doubt either the intake and exhaust causes any changes to temps.
Just ran way better and cooler
Thundermax and new exhaust. Now the exhaust (and probably engine) heat is absolutely unbearable. I hope a stage 2 upgrade will fix this issue.
My local dealer re-jetted all their new bikes before sale. The salesman said they were way to lean from the factory.
A lot of dealers starting doing that when bikes started coming back after purchase for rideability issues and running hot. Get it done before they go out and the come backs stopped.
I thought all bike were lean to keep the feds happy with the pollution?
@@gordmaher8160They are but EPA requirements are for the factory. I don't believe dealers have to keep the lean tune
@@MrZealotProductions... interesting.
When it comes to heat on a motorcycle, Cool is Kool! Whenever I get a bike whether it's new or used I open up the intake, take out the cat, put a tuner on it and let it breathe cleanly!
I honestly doesn't matter if it's a Harley or any other brand, exhaust and a good tune makes all the difference!
Just a quick message from Jensen Beach Florida, I'm a 20 year bike tech and I learned alot from your channel brother! Keep up the great work!🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
That's awesome brother!! Never stop learning, I started working officially on bikes about your age and I still learn new things every single day!!

His hands move like a politician that's for sure.
😄 I assure you I am far from a politician!
Do you ever sit there and giggle when you put some of these pictures in the video like the one at the gas station? Lol
😆 I absolutely do just to see if anyone catches it!
I recently upgraded my FXDR 114 stage 1 (92hp 119lb/ft) to a screaming eagle 131 stage 4 (156hp 166lb/ft). The most unexpected outcome I noticed was that it runs significantly cooler now. It used to feel like I was riding a heater, not anymore
GixxerFoo makes you think things out for sure.
There's a lot of misconception out there about performance parts, they actually add efficiency and can cool the bike down!
I noticed a huge difference just with the M8 alone. Mine has been tuned and has a lot of work done to it. Just getting rid of the stock exhaust makes a good difference with heat reduction.
Getting air flow in and the exhaust out with proper fueling makes a huge difference!! The 4 valve head on your M8 is a huge advancement with Harley-Davidson in with power and engine temperature!
You should do a video strictly on the benefits of oil coolers both static and fan cooled, as well as love jugs and competitors
During a road trip I got stuck in creeping traffic with no place to pull over on my '11 Street Glide. Engine kept going into parade mode and idling oil pressure was basically zero, so I knew it was getting hot. No airflow across an air cooled engine means no heat management. I did some research and decided on Love Jugs fans and an oil temp gauge. Now I can leave the engine running in stop and go traffic during 90 degree summer heat and the engine oil goes to about 230-240 and stays there indefinitely. Idling oil pressure is about 5-10 psi. The trick is to turn the fans on BEFORE it starts to get hot.
The next year I installed some Woods 222 cams. While I had the cam chest open, I upgraded the cam bearings. Also, more importantly, went with an S&S cam plate and high flow oil pump. Went from a Fuel Pack tuner with a canned map to a professional dyno tune. Now, under the same conditions the oil gets to about 210 degrees and just stays there as long as I turn the fans on as soon as I realize this is stop and go traffic. The oil pressure at idle is about 10-20 psi.
Love the content man. Ive learned so much becayse of u and these videos. Keep em coming buddy
Awesome, thank you! That's exactly why I love doing this content!!
When I first got my Electra glide I thought it was running hot because I had a oil tank temperature dipstick, and old head told me to fix the heat on a Harley-Davidson throw that dipstick away and buy one without a thermometer.......
I’ve bought 3 new Harley’s over the years and no matter the model or year, the way these bikes are strangled new from the factory for emissions and who knows what else sure is good business for the aftermarket, but once you get it dialed in and a good tune , you’ll have a totally different, happy machine! No comparison! And always listen too what Mr.Gizz had to say!!
It's incredible the difference an improved stock tune makes on a bone stock Harley. Even if you get into the meat of it on other brands, no matter the style it's the same issues.
Hopped up with 10.5:1 compression pistons, stage 2 cams, kuryakan hypercharger and custom tune on fuel to air ratio. All done, it runs way better, stays cooler to.
What cams? I’m always looking for the best solution.
I live in Nevada and on Friday the 4th I had Love Jugs installed in Sturgis. Yesterday coming home in Salt Lake, I-80 westbound traffic was stopped for 45 minutes due to a load of dirt dumped on the road. It was 90 degrees, and my bike ran way cooler than before the install. This winter I will be installing an oil cooler/ fan setup. I already put a catch can on the intake. Put the can below the rear brake pedal on the lower fairing. 2022 Ultra Apex. Stage 1 & 2 will have to wait until next summer.
Just bought a 2023 road glide special 114 and it’s fast. I have 2 Dyna wide glides. I know what you mean about enhancing performance, but, coming off of twin cam 88’s, this stick 114 is amazingly fast. Just road to Sturgis from Jersey doing 80-90 the whole way. Amazing
That's awesome! I have to admit myself the 114's really scoot bone stock especially compared to the 103 and the 110!
I only started riding 3 years ago. I went to trade in my first bike, an iron 883 for a dyna with a 103 HO, and stage one, until I rode the M8. I now ride a ‘21 Low Rider S with the 114 and I love that bike! The M8 is no joke! All my buddies still ride TCs and my best friend has a SG, CVO with the 110 that he’s put a stage 2 on and he’s almost as fast as me now. Almost.
Great information as always, thank you ....👍🏻
My 15 RG is bone stock with Syn oil (redline) and runs crazy hot. I had a 08 SG with a screaming eagle tune and I never notice the heat radiating even though the 08 didn’t have an oil cooler and the RG does. After this video I’m shopping for a tuner! Love the info you pass down…keep it up!
Great informative video. Thank You 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great info. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I just picked up my first efi twin cam. 2009 deluxe, I was concerned seeing 250f oil temps, after some wood tw-222 and a FP3 tuner I’ve never seen the oil temp over 210f. I had to change the afr #’s on the map to get it rich enough.
With a good tune setup for the cam that should drop the temperatures, what exhaust are you running? Weather and riding conditions will have a profound effect on that oil temperatures, adding an oil cooler is never a bad idea.
@@GixxerFoo the bike already has a oil cooler installed. After checking the plugs I realized it was scary lean even with the FP3 map downloaded for the cam. I changed the afr #’s by .2 at a time until I got down to 13.4, just running the screamin eagle slipons till my budget will allow a Thunderheader. It’s running quite good now, I was disappoint at first.
I'm happy with my EFI 88. It does have a tuner and I run full synthetic, aftermarket exhaust as well.
Killer info bro, thank you!!!
Thank you for the support!
I have a 2013 Electra Glide Ultra Classic 103 and ive been running the Rinehart slimline duals with their 4" mufflers along with the inverted air breather and a fp3. My temps were consistently 265 on the interstate.
600 miles ago, had a Fueling cam chest kit, Woods TW 222's, and Fuel Moto Extreme duty 110 kit installed. Called V&H and had them build me a tune for all this and uploaded through my fp3.
I also put a DK Customs 1" tank lift on the front and their rear spacers on the tank along with their cooling wings.
With all that done, im seeing an engine temp of 239 through the fp3 at 70mph on the interstate.
Will probably change the oil next week and will put a auxiliary oil cooler and filter relocation kit on it from DK Customs also. Hoping to see temp drop some more.
For what its worth, at the same time, i had my shop put a dark horse compensator and Rekluse high torq clutch installed. I know it doesn't apply to the above as far as lowering temps, but i just wanted to say with all that, it feels like i can pull a stump out of the ground now lol.
Oh! I'm in south Louisiana where its been excruciatingly hot.
Get rid of synthetic oil use either a sae 50 or 60 wt . I'm in South Texas freaking hot but using the correct oil definitely helps 20 50 just can't handle the heat I only use it during the winter this something most people don't know and think synthetic is better it's not
Where you're at you could for sure run a straight weight oil with consistent hot temperature in the summer, in that kinda heat a flat weight oil wouldn't hurt at all.
Watercooled engines can dump lots of heat too. Ducati motorcycles are especially notorious for warming up rider’s loins nice and red. Red like their bikes. Comes from the vertical cylinder (whether L-twin or V4) having its header come out right between the rider’s thighs.
Honestly, my 02 WG is so open around the engine, it's never really been super hot.. and I have an oil cooler. There have been times when I have just pulled over in heavy traffic, and sat it out under the shade. Good for you, good for the bike. The best way to handle the heat, is to keep moving!
2009 103 Tri-Glide with wood tw555 cams and S&S tc3 cam plate and oil pump and external breathing system and hiflow air cleaner and catless pipes with Thunder header slipons and a tune from fuel moto on my dynojet power vision and even on a 90° day in Central Kentucky my oil Temps on my dipstick and oil temp gauge rarely gets over 230° and my ET Temps on the powder vision rarely over 250° putting around 91hp 106 trq to the rear axle .
4 head runs cooler than the fathead (M8 cooler than Twincam)
Same lean tunes out of the factory but the cylinders and heads have much more cooling surface area with the fins. Finally oil coolers are stock on all models which helped quite a bit too.
😎👍
Big thumbs up for the channel...
Oklahoma is the pit of hell the past few weeks. Hoping since it’s down into the 90s now I can finally get my clutch spring swapped out.
I'm in the middle of it with you! It's been ridiculous, even trying to get out in the shop after dark it's still miserable with the humidity.
@@GixxerFoo ya no crap, sun goes down and it’s still 100 with 65 percent humidity. God has our asses under a magnifying glass
I did stage 1 with full exhaust and power vision tuner. It does run cooler, but still gets hot. 😮
Have you tried Amsoil V twin ? it sure makes my 96 twin cam run alot cooler.
@@paullesho2693 yes I have
You'll always have some degree of heat with an air cooled bike, but a stock 96 I assure you is going to be exponentially hotter both on the temperature gauge and the heat you feel.
X-cellent advice. BTW, you're getting a reflection on your glasses from your lighting.
I just put the fueling cams in my 06 ultra classic with the thundermax tuner holy moly what a difference does it burn a little bit more fuel absolutely but the motor is running really great and cool. Thanks Eastern performance in Annapolis
Thundermax is the absolute best tuning system out there, you can't beat the ECM replacement with the wide band setup.
I have a 2005 fat boy . The first owner put 95 ci kit on it exhaust se k&n air filter fit under the stock air cleaner foot ball. I changed it over to gear drive my Crank shaft was junk. .018 run out. It was cheaper to make it 103 ci with SE parts. Ported and polished heads even the stock is the way to go. My build cost alot for me. I bought all the parts a little at a time. I found a new TTS master tune for around 300 bucks. Shop around guys. eBay and craigslist are great source for parts. I don't think I will ever build another.
I'm going to get a dyna jet kit from screamin eagle for my stock '99 Heritage Springer. Great information.
It'll makes a nice difference in your rideability!
2002 FXDL TC95: Much cooler but also carburetor, oil cooler and higher quality parts (S&S) S&S 95 gear drive doesn’t want to die. My first brand new bike I ever owned and my favorite of my 3.
1988 FXST EVO80: Other than the cam it’s stock. Damn thing doesn’t want to die. Seems to run pretty warm….
2021 FLHRXS M8114: S&S 475 Cam chest kit, Air cleaner and Mufflers. Doesn’t seem to make a difference heat wise but the bike runs great. Plenty of power for me. Always run high octane gas as well. Rocket Sled compared to the TC and EVO though…
Stay Safe brother 🤙🏽
Just got a 2015 Ultra twin cooled. Low mileage (7500), rode it a couple of times (200 miles or so)> Ordered and installed the oilBud oil cooler, running a cleanable filter, put a fuel Pack 3 on with a canned tune, modified the stock air filter to get the crankcase venting out of there, and put in a K&N. I can see the rich soot on the aftermarket slash cut slip ons, feel the low end torque increase and am considering de-catting the original pipe and having it Jet Hot coated just for the increased heat minimization. I'm a olefart and don't play road racer with the HD. (I do own a Hayabusa for those days ..., being 75 yrs old and all)... Just run a long term Auto Tune and call it good? Whaddayouthink?
Love all your videos too!
Spot on 😊
Thank you for the support!
Had a TechnoResearch dyno tune done on my 2010 Ultra Classic after a stage 2 with Andrews 48 cams. It ran much cooler.
You can't beat a good dyno tune to get it all dialed in exactly for your specific motor. Dyno tune is worth 5 to 15 horsepower over just a canned tune any day.
@@GixxerFoo That stage 2 and dyno tune brought my HP up to 88, and torque up to 100. Not bad for a Twin Cam 96.
I have a stock 08 96 twin cam. it was running fairly hot until I switched to Amsoil v twin. that made a huge difference in the heat it was generating. was going to put a oil cooler on it, Do not seem to need it now. It never had one, cut the heat just by switching to the Amsoil. from the screaming eagal oil.
Sweet!
I'm more than happy with my stock other than Rinehart slip ons 2021 Fatbob114.
The Milwaukee 8 is leaps and bounds cooler running than the Twin Cams. The 4 valve heads really help with keeping the heat down with the larger cylinders and increased cooling surface area with the cooling fins. Factory oil coolers on all M8 models was a huge improvement!
@@GixxerFoo but after listening to the full video I may get the bike tuned just to be sure👍
I bought mine stage one. I then added a big bore. No notice in heat changes on my dipstick temp gage
I live, eat, breathe, and sleep drag bikes. Unless I missed something recently, T/F Harley's are putting out about 1,100-1,200 on a good day. Average is 1,000 from what I understand. Which is no joke on a 1,000 pound bike!
I just put a lenale fan on it works great on the power vision engine temp gauge. However when I first tried it it didn’t lower temp. Had to cut away part of the bracket that was blocking about 40% of the flow
Really? Engineers 🙄, that defeats the entire purpose of your fan.
@@GixxerFoo
Yeah but like I said works great now. Ordered the Jim’s but the seller refunded my money. Kinda glad now because the Jim’s are very expensive. I going to take the fan bracket off & take it to a welder to re-enforce the bracket

Quite honestly ,your videos are the most informed I have seen . Thank you for making them.
This one had me thinking. I have a stage 2 on an M8 107 2018 RKS.Did I do the wrong thing using Harley’s tuner coupled with smart tune pro and 18m o2 sensors? Am I still ‘too lean’ with the tune the ‘outta the box ‘ Harley tuner provides even with the piggy back smart tune pro attached??
Any insight would be so greatly appreciated . Thx. Steve
FYI to further add, bassani headpipe(no cat) on s and S exhaust and KN hi flow air intake
The Screamin Eagle tuners are mandated to run the EPA legal tunes, on the M8 it's not so much a big deal with the 4 valve head and the factory oil coolers. The bikes run good with tunes, the Smart Tune Pro makes a major difference with maintaining peak performance within the parameters of the tune. The SE tune is going to be lean and not nearly as rich a Power Vision or FuelPak tune. With a richer tune and the same setup with your cam you would be looking at an additional 5 to 10 horsepower.
Great work as always. Have an FP3-should I auto tune from the stock/base tune or use a canned tune first and auto tune from that? I have a stage one setup. Thanks brother.
Get the closest tune you can from their database and load that. Then do the auto tune. You'll be closer from the get go than from the stock tune
Your video are super informative . Your opinions are on point. Wanted to ask about cams I don't get the gist of lift and such I just want a cam that gives me low ram on freeway. Can answer that question. I realize there are many varibles. I boughts s&s 510 cam chest kit new cam plate oil pump will that give me want. Ican change it still if you can recommend a better bolt on cam.I just ride mildly ,but on freeway I get up to 80 rpm high i dont have rpm guage on bike. Only stage one now . have a completely stock 01 RK. Unfortunately I have to MM FUEL INJ. I realize that I most likely have to put a carb . Thanx Eric
You'll be hard pressed to find any good tuning option on the MM FI, not many tuners will touch it anymore. Honestly with that system if it's working, let it be. Carb swap would be your best bet if you want to start getting into the engine. With a RK you'll for sure want a cam for a heavier bike, this will encompass your low end and roll on power down the highway. The Wood TW-6-6 is a great choice for your bike, it's got that mix of low, mid and highway power without compromise. It's also bolt in so no worries on valve springs or anything like that.
On my Street Bob 114 - Will just adding Tab Performance slip on exhaust and a stock air filter or upgraded air cleaner - will it run cooler overall? What Air Intake is good to go with? My box stock 114 has very good throttle response, which is amazing, however want to cool engine with basic exhaust and air filter improvements
More power means more heat. Heat kills engines.
When you are dealing with a hi pro, custom bike that you didn't build, there is a lot of guess work, you have to deal with. Stock is good,, because you can get a service manual and your good to go!!!
That's a real issue buying a modified bike second hand without any documentation, who's to say that documentation is even still valid depending on how many owners since the build.
Very good video as usual, because you don't put any fluff in your stuff.
Most of the people I've seen spend big bucks on their bikes just to have them sit in the garage 90% of the time.
They could'a just stuck a bunch of stickers on the bike and lied about what they had done and come out way ahead.
Nobody would know the difference,

Tuners are great... however, the warranty goes out the door once you do it. I am looking forward to HD designing a full water cooled engine for their cruisers. I want reliability and longevity. Air cooled engines are old technology. My air cooled VWs back in the day lasted roughly 40-50,000 miles before requiring a rebuild. And they had a big oil cooler and oil cooler fan. This all makes sense outside of the warranty. Finding a good dyno tuner is a battle. There are a lot of clowns out there that are clueless. Ask me how I know. My two cents :-)
Hey righound4 what do you think of the woods 222 cams???? Thanks in advance!!!!
Talk about E85 kits.
That's not a bad idea as E85 is becoming more widely available, makes a hell of cost effective race fuel but it burns fast!
I recently purchased a 2000 Heritage Springer with a carburetor and it had an oil cooler. I tried keeping it but it leaked so I removed it and my bike is leak free. My belief is that if the bike needed it then the factory would have installed it.

FP4 is a nice unit, I need to upgrade my FP3 bike to the 4!

Hi, I have a 2011 FXDWG Twincam 96ci I wan to find a good but no so expensive way to remap injection , what do you recommend?
The best tuner is going to be flash tuner, I would recommend Power Vision if you plan on doing a dyno tune in the future. FuelPak by Vance and Hines is going to be another good one, usually less expensive than Power Vison but dyno tuning really isn't widely available for it. You can check Amazon for these tuners and find them cheaper, generally in the range 350 to upwards of 500 dollars depending where you buy.
I'll go rhythm
What is to hot at the oil temperature
Oil temp should not exceed 230*... if you reach 270*, your oil will break down and lose its lubricity.
What are opinions on DK Custom tank lift kit? Are they worth it? Do they help cool your engine?
DK are excellent to deal with.
I've used the tank lift, and it certainly helps.
I also run one of their catch cans. Really great products, in my opinion. 👍👍
I put a small tank lift on my Dyna and it did help air circulation around the motor. And it looks way better now too. I fabbed the brackets myself. Super easy to do.
@@gdubbsmotolife9713 That's what I'm considering doing, there's not much to them just raising the front a few inches.
That will take a lot of heat off the motor, pulling that tank up lets a lot of heat escape off the motor!

Stock Marelli bikes don't run hot. I've been riding one for years. I could go into why this is, but, it's your story.
