Crime Beat: "An enigma:" Hiding in plain sight | S2 E12

  • In July of 2000, 18-year-old Tina Wu was murdered and her younger sister Theresa suffered horrific injuries when an attacker broke into their Toronto apartment.
The two sisters, who were visiting Taiwanese students, were not the only victims in a series of horrifying assaults targeting women in the city. When police eventually tracked down the perpetrator - many questions remained unanswered as to why a shy tradesman unleashed gratuitous, escalated violence against four innocent women, all within a 4 kilometre radius of his home.
The judge in the trial described the convicted murderer as “an enigma” and his life as a “paradox.”

Notice when how this scumbag's attorney says he's sorry for what he did them proceeds to talk about reasons he's "sorry" that have everything to do with him and how it will ruin his life and said NOTHING about being sorry for ruining the lives of his innocent victims and their families? Makes me sick.

He should never get out. I think a basic rule should be, If your victim can’t live life above ground then the criminal can’t live life past the prison bars.

I remember this case. This guy and his wife both worked with me at IKEA at Leslie/Sheppard at the time. The entire store and staff was in absolute shock. His wife quite working after the story broke out. We all felt bad for her, and the embarrassment she endured.

I can’t believe they let him out unsupervised to a healing lodge? Also when they spoke about him they almost seemed sympathetic to him when he pled guilty? Saying he did feel remorse?! WTF- he’s obviously just playing everyone, he was acting in his own interests.

The real danger is the justice system. They think they can “rehabilitate” someone.. I don’t believe it can’t be done, but in a person like this guy. Nope. He literally killed people and then went to feed, barb &hug his children with the same hands 🙄 I hope he never gets any chance for parole. Tina Wu didn’t get the chance to live, why should he get a second chance @ life?

Defence lawyer: he was very remorseful for what he had done. He was gonna be i jail, he was losing his family, children, so yeah, he was very sorry..... Yada yada yada...
Uhm. No. He was feeling very sorry for him self for what HE was gonna lose. He wasnt sorry for what he took away from others.
Pleading guilty is not a sign of remorse. Its just a thing many people are adviced to do, to get a lighter sentence - even those who are actually innocent.

Thank you for this. Very sensitive account of the horrific crimes, and I really appreciate the way the victims and their families are at the heart of the narrative, as it should be.. So much hatred and violence in that man, no criminal history. So many lives destroyed, and why? What matters is that we know how he destroyed lives, long after he became a prison number. The grace and dignity, of the Korean family is incredible, as is the strength of the disguised victim fighting through constant fear. Let psychiatrists learn what they can from this man as part of his rehabilitation before parole, if that is possible.

I think the U.S. & Canada can learn from one another in their justice systems. They're both broken. U.S. is waaaay too harsh and unjust, and Canada is waaaay too lenient. Need to find that middle ground and we'd get somewhere. This is very sad. My heart is with the families. And to the survivors, I hope you eventually find peace and are able to find happiness and calm. 🖤

Please stop your hypocrite way of insulting the society. Don't call it a life sentence. Call it what it is, 20 years, (hopefully).
When a murderer confess to such heinous crime, it is a worse crime to call it second degree murder.

We've got murder, attempted murder, rape, attempted rape, and breaking and entering (not to mention premeditation). That's enough to get you life (if not the death penalty) in every state in the US without the possibility of parole. But because he pled guilty and happens to be part indigenous, he got 20 years. What about the victims? What do they get? A lifetime of horrible memories and PTSD. I think Canada deserves a boycott.
