It's so interesting to see this old video from the 1990's and know that, 15 years later, the BBC TV series, Downton Abbey would end up saving it. That is, not only because of the revenue from being used as a set but also the publicity that ensures they have a much brighter future. And, while some may resent the world that created such living, I think it's precisely because of that resentment that it's important to remember it. And it is a part of history.
Now a year has past and in that short time the tremors are building around the Brexit volcano. The class that created this absolute monstrosity are facing a crisis of its own making. There are admirers of this in England and in America. One Senator even decked out his office in Downton Abbey colours and you can easily guess which side of politics he runs with. They are a breed that admires this type of wealth display. One family owning 6,000 acres of prime land but the Tsunami is coming and what the future holds for the "elite" well, Après nous le déluge.
I found this case very interesting regarding how mature we are as society, watching the Carnavons themselves adding so much value, personally and working hand on hand to preserve their castle - home not only for their own sustain, but for generations to come to enjoy such a beautiful castle.
It’s sad these people don’t know how to treat a treasure with respect. Throwing food on the floor. I can’t believe people act like that. You don’t behave that way in a common restaurant.
I feel that those people know how to be respectful but that they chose not to be, happily causing upset and discomfort. They won't be welcome there again and a lesson was learned by the hosts...not sure if the 'guests' learned anything as they seem to be a beligerant bunch.
How strange to be watching a video on Highclere Castle, preempting the now famous Downton Abbey. Subsequent videos of the current Lord Carnarvon have been aired; although, never knew one existed about the castle before it's resurrection. Wonderful hidden treasure of information on a much loved favorite!
I can only imagine how difficult it has been with the upkeep for those who have taken over the castle throughout the years. In their best way, they've had to work out ways to earn the money to maintain it. I don't think I would have felt comfortable in such a beautiful place, with such rich history, sitting around a banquet table with all that partying behavior. I'm sure if they opened the opportunity for an elegant banquet many would love to attend!
It is a celebration of a time when the wealthy and powerful actually threw crumbs to the dogs, and poor. They really did not care, since everything belonged to them, including the people. As we now see, that event is played out daily, though more subtly, as the handful of wealthy and powerful acquire, and have acquired, more than half the wealth of the in the entire world, and along with the wealth, the power over the rest of us. Nice as they may be, they are a part of the system that impoverishes us all, even if they may be struggling, who of us doesn’t, except those few who own us, them and our governments. All governments, Communist, Socialist, democracy, republic, it doesn’t really matter, that handful of people manipulate it all, as long as they own most of the money.
I'm having quiet a mixed feeling with that manager. And I agree with them regarding the front door. Thank heavens for Downton Abbey! Excited about the upcoming movie as well!
I think he is awful. He couldve trained wait staff to upsell. He doesnt love the place which is so sad. Any restaurant he did this in USA would close! It is not a motel!
He is smug and condescending. I can’t believe anyone agreed with him that paying visitors should enter through the back door, which obviously lacks grandeur. And a self-service cafe? It’s not an IKEA restaurant! They are selling an experience, so they need to make it work. Does anyone out there know how long he lasted working there and what happened to him after that?
What a bunch of drunked louts at that banquet. People are such jerks! They have no idea how to behave . Getting smashed and throwing fruit in a place like that? I would have thrown them all out!
Mj my thought exactly! I am. Romanian girl working currently as a PA in a great agency but coming from a very humble background. ha , really have no idea how much a house like that actually costs in up keep , all they got from downton could be gone if the roof needs replacing, lol
Hardly. More like a couple of years depending on the contract they signed. They’ll get publicity and tourists for awhile but that won’t bring in millions.
They received approximately 15 million pounds from the show throughout its run plus their visitor numbers went from 150 to 1200 a day. However when they were approached by the producers they had to make a restoration of 12 million pounds but it ensured its safety for the next generation as Lady Carnarvon said in an interview. So now they worry more for monthly maintenance than restorations because they were even able to allow visitors go to the tower again and that brought more revenue
I would have to say that because of Downton, Highclere Castle will be fine. It is nice to be able to see the inside of the castle. I would like to visit this castle sometime. thank you, Lord and Lady Carnarvon, for allowing Downton Abby to film at Highclere Castle.

That manager is daft for wanting to cut staff and have self service tea rooms because that doesn't fit the high class atmosphere of Highclere Castle. He says they're at capacity and charge too little for a pint, so they can charge a bit more and people will pay for proper service and the castle will make more money.
I agree. People who want the Downtown Abbey experience especially may appreciate a high tea, or a garden tea experience for a higher fee. I might even take the business model of the McMennamins franchise in Portland, USA and make certain rooms or areas different tea or bar/cigar areas of relaxation. The McMennamins buy old historic buildings and create the most lovely venues for hotel/bar/recreation. This is what I would've done with my family's estate had I had the opportunity.
I can certainly understand the financial aspect as it probably takes quite a bit of profit to maintain Highclere and it's staff, that he wanted more to modernize it and take away from the personal aspect of servitude. I agree when one comes to visit this castle they shouldn't have to enter through the back door. The first room visitors should see that awe inspiring entrance. I for one would want to see that first upon entering this grand castle. I'm not sure that guy had a clue.
I was there in 2019. All the tour visitors enter thru the front doo. r Thru many rooms on the ground floor then up the famous staircase for a look up stairs. We were not rushed. After we (my SIL and I) went to the basement where the King TUT exhib si and we met the current Countess. She was lovely and had a beautiful voice. Later we had drinks at the outside bar, and viewed the gardens. So well worth it!!!!!
Curious as to how the experiment with an estate manager turned out. Were they able to turn things around and start making a profit or did it fold until Downton Abbey came along to save it? A big gap in years between the mid 90s when this doc took place and when DA started filming. (2010)
It's always a Pleasure to see Downton Abbey Castle- High Claire Castle. I am a fanatic with Downton Abbey! It would be very smart for The Lady of the house to continue the series on its 7th term with Lady Mary in charge. Continue the series so fundings can come both ways to save the Castle. Scarcity philosophy doesn’t produce abundance. Give a product at a reasonable price and treat your staff well. Your staff IS your business. Bad morale among staff is always the manager fault. Bad morale among staff translates to surly customer service and who can blame them.
I'm sure that Hyacinth Bucket visited Highclere as it was a stately home and she might have had a chance encounter of meeting Lord Carnarvon. Of course, there weren't enough of her kind of people around the place.
The struggle for survival of these beautiful mansions lies squarely with previous generations. They buried their heads in the sand and were too snobbish to actually "work" at anything, deeming it too "vulgar". Bravo to the current Carnavons for actually working to make it a viable enterprise and preserve it for themselves and future generations.
For me as a Canadian, whose family goes back to Colonial Nova Scotia, Highclere Castle is very important. Most British documentaries ignore the role played by Highclere Castle in the final act of Canada's creation. In 1866 this stately home hosted Sir. John A. MacDonald, Father of Confederation and first PM along with members of the Canadian delegation. The dreams of a new nation were expanded upon and debated in this lovely home prior to the act of Parliament that would create another great democracy. I'm constantly surprised by the fact that Britain does not celebrate this extraordinary birthing. Perhaps British media think they will offend America by telling a Canadian story??? How sad and juvenile of them. On the other hand perhaps pure ignorance???
Why would anyone be offended at a program on the origin of Canada? Let’s be honest the only reason they don’t do more on it is because it’s rather boring as far as history goes. Lol sorry but you did take a subtle dig.
Even though this was filmed I think in the 90s and that Downton Abby helped save this beautiful home, I was still a nervous wreck pulling for their horse to win that last race they showed. Lol. Btw I hate self service. I don’t eat at buffets and if I’m lucky enough to have tea, I don’t want to have to carry my food and tea.
Very interesting to watch this program after watching the PBS documentary Secrets of Highclere just last weekend! Being a history dork i tend to be more familiar with medevil & Tudor eras than years the Downton Abbey series portrays, but I've got the gist of what the show is about & just haven't gotten around to spending a weekend binging:) the documentary was filmed a few years ago while Downtown Abbey was a couple seasons old & very popular, the castle & huge estate were beautiful & in wonderful condition compared to the shabby drapery, ceilings with huge holes, unkempt landscaping, & general feeling of despair the Carnarvon family would also have to let their ancestral home be taken over by the Trust like other great estates/houses. Wonderful to see how successful the many different ventures that branch out from Highclere have become & hearing the amazing stories about the family & castle over 500 years! I'm going to have to watch the 2 shows back to back & really be able to appreciate all the work involved in bringing Highclere back!
Hope to visit the place. Just by coincidence the show played during six of the best years of our lives. Hope the movie retains the magic of the series.
THANK YOU for posting this. I can watch all SORTS of violence and weird things, but cannot watch an animal being hurt or in pain. I stopped watching this immediately precisely because it would break my heart to witness this, and especially to have nothing done. If you can't look well after horses, or don;t know if a horse is lame or not, you must not be allowed to have one. You should be qualified to have a horse, like you need a drivers licence to drive a car It saddens me the way people treat horses like an investment, they are living creatures, and so smart horses are,
Lots of people are criticizing the people at the "Drunken Medieval Feast" themed party. Well, that's how you act at a "Drunken Medieval Feast" party. The problem isn't those that attended the party. The problem is the person that thought a Drunken Feast party was an appropriate event to hold at the castle.
that too, and why ? , because damaged children drank too much to hide the emotions they were taught to suck up , that was why so many died of alcohol related issues and s many had gout
I agree Highclere castle is the best “stand in” for Downton Abbey. This episode also shows how the old estate system just about disappeared in the 1950’s. The relationship between the earl and village can be at times fraught with challenges.
I like the family. They are very entrepreneurial and try everything to save the family estate. It is a stunning house with the same architect as the man who designed the House of Parliament. I hope their horses are winners and I hope they get more catering deals!!! Even if they throw fruit at the old man portrait lol.
OMG! Seriously, TH-cam..if you insist on putting commercials in everything, just like network tv. At least wait until the freaking person has stopped talking! I mean, really really annoying!
I don't understand why they tried to do a drunken medieval party at Highclere. It's as jarring as baptism at a Club Med. Why not offer fine dining and formal dinner parties instead? Much more in line with the theme of the castle and far more dignified.
I don't feel particularly sorry that the rich people can't afford their castle. I think it's important to remember that the castle didn't fall into disrepair due to inheritance tax. It fell into disrepair because the family refused to open it to tourism in an era when old money doesn't hold weight. The owners talk about allowing the public inside as if it's a horrible idea, but it's not. These aristocrats refused to accept that they don't have the same status and wealth now that they used to have, and the castle suffered as a result.
Not sure about British property law but in some other western nations you can use a Trust to own the property thereby avoiding (or at least delaying) inheritance tax. The trusts last for 99 years in Australia. I'd be surprised if old money aristocrats weren't using Trusts if the option was available to them.
Two world wars and the Great Depression took their toll on the old aristocratic families too. As well as ancestors who gambled or went in for extreme landscaping. A former Lord Carnarvon blew much of the family money (including some of his wife's inheritance) on finding King Tut's tomb. Lady Carnarvon had already spent a lot turning Highclere and some of their other property into hospitals for soldiers in WWI. She even sold a few paintings that would be worth a hundred times as much now.
But the estate isn't just the house. There are acres and acres of land that previous generations didn't put to good enough use. That much land could easily net them enough money to pay the tax, and still live well, and have funds for repairs and maintenance. It was bad management that did them in, not the inheritance tax.
Use the back door. Right. I'll do that... and self service. Right. Just like they used to live. Not. Might as well go to the cafe in the local village for the same service.
Really enjoyed watching this! Visited Highclere Castle / Downton during a trip home to the UK last January- car hire drama and fatigue did not stop us! It was marvellous and I’ll go back next time I’m home!
I think Adrian is completely incorrect. We came Krespan than 3,000 miles just to visit Highclere. Walking through the front door was very special to us. The high tea was WONDERFUL and perfect and gave us just what we had hoped for on that special day. Charge more and perhaps add the lower cost option. I do believe if you opened more and made a set schedule that it would be beneficial. I found Louis, your then Butler, to be very helpful and be acted in a way that made us feel special. I did not see him I. This video and do hope he is still there. I would LOVE to come to a banquet at Highclere but more like dinner at Downton and less like a mid evil feast. It would be amazing to get to spend a night in the Castle as we were able at Roch Castle in Wales. We loved your home l. We were fortunate enough to get to speak with both of you at different times while we were there as you were actually managing your property. We were so impressed.
The Carnarvon’s were very nice people. They really appreciated their guest & were so right in wanting their guest to enter through the front door. That new manager missed the whole point of what made the castle unique.
I just love it when Queen Elizabeth is sarcastic like that, she's not mean about it, she just reminds me of my Gran. It makes me happy to hear her laugh and have a chance to be normal once in a while. She has so much weight on her shoulders she deserves every happy carefree moment she can get. Great documentary. Great insight into British culture. So different from America. That is what makes the world interesting . We need to preserve that cultural history.
It's funny that Downton Abbey is about an old-money aristocratic family struggling to accept the modern world. And in reality, the Castle hosts an old-money aristocratic family struggling to accept the modern world.
You have a strange interpretation of the modern world. If that is for you accepting people who have no manners, getting drunk and smashing food on the ground, then something is wrong with your standards. The woman who is working in the kitchen iscomplaining about their behavior and even refuses to go inside where these “modern guest “ are.

I feel that those people know how to be respectful but that they chose not to be, happily causing upset and discomfort. They won't be welcome there again and a lesson was learned by the hosts...not sure if the 'guests' learned anything as they seem to be a beligerant bunch.
What a lovely castle with such a rich history in its bones. Thank God for Julian Fellows and his vision.

How strange to be watching a video on Highclere Castle, preempting the now famous Downton Abbey. Subsequent videos of the current Lord Carnarvon have been aired; although, never knew one existed about the castle before it's resurrection. Wonderful hidden treasure of information on a much loved favorite!
I'm pretty sure Highclere's future is forever safe thanks to Downton :) What a beautiful place, I'd love to visit
Forever? DA popularity would have to be permanent like the Beatles for that. Unlikely.
Been there once. So many stables on the ground
I think I would have moved that medieval banquet to one of the barns.
Pigsty if they had one.

Right? If they don't come through the front door it's as if they are, "the help."

He is smug and condescending. I can’t believe anyone agreed with him that paying visitors should enter through the back door, which obviously lacks grandeur. And a self-service cafe?

@@aprilcoursey4533 Love the McMennamins! I had frequented several of them when I lived in Vancouver.
Curious as to how the experiment with an estate manager turned out. Were they able to turn things around and start making a profit or did it fold until Downton Abbey came along to save it? A big gap in years between the mid 90s when this doc took place and when DA started filming. (2010)

I don't see why Americans would be offended at this. You're our neighbors and we respect you
This fellow is like a motel & not a castle. He didnt see the BIG picture.
Why would anyone be offended at a program on the origin of Canada? Let’s be honest the only reason they don’t do more on it is because it’s rather boring as far as history goes. Lol sorry but you did take a subtle dig.

Btw I hate self service. I don’t eat at buffets and if I’m lucky enough to have tea, I don’t want to have to carry my food and tea.

Wonderful authentic documentary!
Loved the energy of that beautiful mare!
Exactly! Do watch, I just did lol and boy, clearly a world of difference! The current Lord has had a very good head on his shoulders.
Did anyone even notice the lame mare being let out in the snow with the foal?

Thank you so very dearly for commenting about this to help people like myself not have to face that kind of stuff.
Not nice.

I don't understand why they tried to do a drunken medieval party at Highclere. It's as jarring as baptism at a Club Med. Why not offer fine dining and formal dinner parties instead? Much more in line with the theme of the castle and far more dignified.
Thank goodness for the series Downton Abbey. Seems the family moved out in 2012 into a cottage due to extreme disrepair.
That is incredible. Totally absurd.
This is my favorite part of British - the class and style of the nobility! Much love from New Orleans❤
Very interesting, Loved Downton Abbey Series .
The manager is right but he doesnt listen to her. Selfservice takes the soul away.

I did not see him I. This video and do hope he is still there. I would LOVE to come to a banquet at Highclere but more like dinner at Downton and less like a mid evil feast.
