The best fighting robots are usually the least complex, less things to break, this is why Valkyrie is so good, it's litterally just a blade on wheels. Triple Crown doesn't look like it even knows what it wants to be - a wedge, a spinner, an overly complex wheel system - a great design for maybe moving boxes around a warehouse but this is a robot fighting competition.
Triple crowns drive is called a swerve drive, and is actually very commonly used in other robot competitions, except battlebots, they are fragile, and heavy. All it could take is one hit to completely shut a wheel down because a gear is just as exposed as the wheel itself, it’s just impractical
@@Zerethon I think overhead spinner in the fashion of SOW or Bloodsport except with swerve drive would be pretty sweet. That way the weapon can protect the delicate parts of the bot and is dangerous from all angles. Self righting might become an issue though.
@TriVos Ahren this is a swerve drive. If you could balance, it could move any direction with just one wheel. Adding a second wheel allows it to rotate. 3rd is just more stable/redundant.
@@wristofkings It would also have none of the benefits though. The reason to use swerve drive at all is to allow you to rotate your bot towards the opponent whilst moving in a different direction. SOW and Bloodsport don't need to do this, they're effective no matter from which side they are attacked.
I think the blade lifted the chasis up disabling its wheels from making contact to the ground, valkyrie didn't attack the wheels , but the tripple crown vehicle was not well though of for this issue. it propelled itself well its unfortunate that it got attacked on that crown anywhere else and the outcome may have been different, valkyrie has the experience though so it was a matter of time, once they realized what the design was it was over as they hadn't seen a bot like tripple crown in arena.
Being smarter does not mean always being right. It only means *probably* being correct more often. Most successful BB designs look to be simple and robust - Bite Force, Tombstone, Endgame. All of the designers obviously know the principles far better than almost everyone, but they sometimes prioritise fun over practicality.
Nah, this all came down to operator skill. Triple crown operator didn't take advantage of the mobility, hesitated when he should have gone for wheels in ideal positioning, and just passively made a lethal (for himself) approach when he should have maneuvered there. Guy didn't play well.

Agreed, but can't help to think if there was an effective pilot behind the reins what it could do. Just because you can build it doesn't mean you can drive it

Triple Crown is an interesting bot! It does a bunch of things terribly, in a very complex way, at the cost of being completely unable to defend itself from even the smallest attack. It’s a bold strategy Cotton. I’ll be cheering it on!
@@suzukisixk7 Chomp was severely more mechanically complicated but its purpose was simple, its a hammer bot. Tripple Crown is nowhere near as complex but what is it trying to do?
A robot that could strafe circles around its opponent while keeping the front towards enemy is a great concept. I'm hoping to see an improved Triple Crown in the future
Honestly triple crown is one of those robots you wonder how they got on battlebots, it's brilliantly made but it's clearly so complicated it'll fall apart with the slightest hit, it's clearly got no pushing power, and the weapons are clearly going to be incredibly weak, I honestly think it'd fail to beat rusty.
Triple crown is a brand new bot and also the first bot to feature swerve drive, on top of being unfinished and it was a back-up team anyways. The guy who built it has also won a ton of other competitions iirc. And no bot is gonna win its first fight really, especially against Valkyrie. I’d be excited to see triple crown finished, improved and returning next year.
If they didn't have limitations on robot type size and weaponry it would be much more interesting. It's mostly oversized roombas with wedges, pneumatic flippers, saws, and drills attached. I don't think any electromagnetic, chemical, ballistic, or energy weapons are allowed.
Blip, a new robot from the team that finished top 4 last year got to fight Rusty. Triple Crown, a bot that is from an experienced team but new to Battlebots gets Valkyrie. Not exactly fair is it?
This fight likely happened because Valkyrie lost its first match. Same thing happened to Slap Box a year ago: drew Tombstone as its first match because Tombstone lost its first match.
The whole structure of Battlebots is pretty illogical. It's styled as a tournament, but does next to nothing to make it competitive. Teams are punished for introducing an interesting gimmick and then forced to stick with it the whole season. It's more like the WWE than MMA, but it puts on airs like its a real competition. Actual fighting sports have amateur fighters work their way up in the field until they prove they are capable of face a proven fighter and they don't let heavy weights pound down on middleweights. I feel like you could easily segregate the field by weapon class and have champions for each like the champions of different weight classes or titles, and then have them face off in mixed fights and exhibitions as well. Triple crown could be a really interesting control bot, but to be competitive is has to be a spinner and due to its unique drive it can never be a really good spinner. Worse its forced to face an excellent spinner which just wastes time and money.
Concept is awesome, just needs a few adjustments: lower and upper guards for the wheels (perhaps sloped to redirect the force of blows), and a longer reach weapon. They’ll be back!
The bot physically have a decent idea, but the complexity was bad, not because that's more areas to fail, but because that's more things for the driver to have to wrap his head around. I think mecanum wheels could have done the same things just with less complexity
Valkyrie could have gone on to really impress the judges with some big hits when Triple Crown was immobilised. But respect to them for not going to town on this very cool and special bot. I want to see more of that slick drive and hopefully they get a fair bit of test runs to improve the bot for future seasons.
It's an interesting idea, to have a drive system where you can quickly move in any direction quickly... but taking that idea and turning it into a durable fighting robot is not going to be easy. I think it would be really fun if Triple Crown somehow was able to take the concept and add a more practical weapon loadout. I'd love to see a bot where superior driving would really carry the day.
The announcer talking about the excitement of a rookie bot builder bring their bot in for the first while it's literally the least enthusiastic entrance ever is hilarious.
The drive of Triple Crown is quite interesting. Different way of doing omni-directional motion then the omni-wheeles of Shatter and Glitch. Though, it does seem like that drive ate a lot of their weight allowance. I didn't have much hope for them with this match up, but I do see possibilities for them. Looking forward to see them work on the machine in the future.
That's the problem with swerve drive. It's needs twice as many motors per wheel and is generally a lot weaker. Still it would be interesting to see more robots with swerve.
@@teknicron1080 Yeah I don't really get this design. If you're going to use swerve, why have such a slow robot? Why put the weapon on only one side? Why have one wedge in between your swerve modules? It's cool that there's a swerve drive in BattleBots now, but it doesn't really seem like there was a lot of thought given to anything but the drivetrain here.
Yeah, the matchups have been especially puzzling and lopsided this season. Very disappointing that they can't do better with such a solid roster compared to 2020.
@@kirill1052 I still remember poor little Grabot, the committee always gave them like Tombstone or Gigabyte like c'mon..and you notice that team isn't there this year probably because they were thrown to the sharks and never given a fight to even show the little arms work, there was a child even on that team too, just a bad look really
What a gem! Like many of these ‘bots, it’s almost too pretty to fight! I also like the bot called Synchros, another complex machine that is beautifully designed and built.
I wish Todd Mendenhall was still using his Wrath/Panzer Mk 4 Robots to compete on BB. I think it would’ve stood a much better chance than Triple Crown, especially when Wrath Jr made the MW Quarterfinals 20 years ago. That’s another thing I missed, the different weight classes in BB, and how destructive they could be.
Its complex for sure, but chomp 2 has to be the most complicated bot ever built, and just like chomp 2, triple crown proves, that complex isn't necessarily, better. you have to sacrifice to much in armor and weapon weight to add these super complex systems for them to ever leave you with strong contender. While i can appreciate the work that went into making it work, you sadly can see that it doesn't have a active weapon that is going to do any damage to a more traditionally built 250lb bot, its weapon looked more like that of a 125 lb bot. the weapon is way out of its weight class. The omni directional wheels of shatter do exactly the same thing, and dont sacrifice nearly as much weight, and are not anywhere close to being as exposed. This would have done very well in robot wars where the weapons and armor are not nearly as strong as battlebots.
Triple crown should've had horizontal spinners between the wheels on all sides, that were also thick, wide, and tall so that almost skimmed the ground and its own wheels. It would be good defense against an undercutter and land powerful blows. Maybe on the outside of the wheels there could've been wedges just so that the entire outside of the bot would be protected.
Wait, they're still making Battlebots? This thing is my childhood! One of the best parts of the day back as a kid, I gotta find a way to watch the full episodes.
The ability to always face your opponent is a very powerful feature that could have allowed Triple Crown to win, However ether the driver or the controls made this advantage null.
@@Jinsoku440 Huge is a cool gimmick, the old rotator was pointless, the new one makes sense, lockjaw I don't feel like really fits this category, but Fusion does - Fusion works because it can use either a horizontal or vertical, whichever it needs, but it sacrifices having more efficacy with one weapon, in order to have 2 weapons that keep it from being countered - they fail to realize that in doing so, the opponent also has a guaranteed counter against it. If a vertical spinner counters the opponents wedge, then the opponent can just go after their horizontal portion - it would make much more sense to just have a bot with 2 interchangeable configurations, 1 mount for a vertical spinner, & 1 for horizontal, that way, they can change it accordingly in order to counter their opponent, while maximizing the effectiveness of each weapon, and not sacrificing weight that could otherwise be put into armor. It's just not practical how it is.. it's something a kid would come up with, and of course it wins some fights, but that doesn't mean it couldn't easily be better, it's just because it is a combat robot built by people with experience and know-how.
@@Frosty_tha_Snowman you missed a bit of my point. Early Lockjaw was a spring loaded crusher/flipper; and REALLY fked up a few 'bots back in the day, RotatŔ had decent success in the off season (same with Counter Revolution, who actually beat a version of Tombstone in Robogames) and was known to whip a bot or two with that right hook. And HUGE is not just a cool gimmick, it's a direct engineering counter to the current meta, from weapon height, to construction they eat *most* of the verts alive. You start with a concept, then iron out the details through trial and error; that's just kind of how engineering works? 💁🏿♂️
They just try to have fun with making a new robot, this is clearly not meant to be a contender but it's unique which is cool, I hate how everyone immediately clowns the builders who try something new. If everyone were like you it'd be all verts.
That was too easy for Valkyrie. And I remember in the intro of the first episode, their fight with Blip was previewed and it did not look good for them. I am very concerned about their chances making the top 32.
No, its not the most complicated, chomp is far too complex to be beaten out by a mere swerve drive Heck even blip is more complicated than a swerve drive
If the bot pilot was better they could have won this. All they needed to do is keep their spinner facing the other bot, but instead they had the wedge facing them the whole time, like they thought it was gonna take the hits or something.
There is an elegance in simplicity that Triple Crown proved to be true. Having too much going on usually means having more weak spots and doing a lot of things in mediocrity rather than one thing really well.
The concept behind Triple Crown is interesting, but the compliments end there. It didn’t look like it was made to take hits, low hitting weapons can destroy its wheels, it has too much weight invested in the motion of the robot and not enough in actual armor or weaponry.

Triple crown needs to be lower to the ground. Looks menacing and intimidating, but it holds no chance. Too many things to go wrong.
Actually, the weakness is an exposed wheel no matter which direction the bot faces.
That big blade cut them down. Got a new subscriber. Was fun to watch. Great video
*is this the most complicated BattleBot ever build?*
*Chomp has entered the chat*
At least with Chomp, you get an idea of what it's supposed to do. Triple Crown looks really confusing at first (and maybe second and third) glance.
@@kaitlynwickham6237 ok? Triple crowd looks complicated and the drive system is but nowhere near the complex level of engineering chomp has.
@@suzukisixk7 Chomp was severely more mechanically complicated but its purpose was simple, its a hammer bot. Tripple Crown is nowhere near as complex but what is it trying to do?
@@sebastianriz4703 I'd say it's trying to hide from it's wife playing around in the garage....or at least that's all it did do :)
They probably select unique bots over strong bots, since if they chose only the strongest bots then they would all be the same.
Swerve drive should be able to push well
It probably would have done something against anything except valkyrie, who is explicitly an undercutter.
@Justin Williams Paul Wall is the people's champ
When I saw Tripple Crown on the thumbnail, the 1st thing that crossed my mind was, "A fidget spinner?"!
🤣🤣
2:27 I think that's what all of us were expecting from the draw.
Triple Crown seems like the bot equivalent of the guy who's afraid to lose, so he preps for everything XD
Never knew this existed until now. Looks like a cool competition.
Oh yeah dude! Check out the stuff from the late 90s and 00s! Ziggo and Toro are good ones.
And robot wars in the UK.
Whhhhhaaaaaat?
Its a TV series, thursday nights in central CA.
btw. Grant Imahara from mythbusters was a robot builder here.
If they didn't have limitations on robot type size and weaponry it would be much more interesting. It's mostly oversized roombas with wedges, pneumatic flippers, saws, and drills attached. I don't think any electromagnetic, chemical, ballistic, or energy weapons are allowed.
Ohhhh, this looks like a lot of fun!
Blip, a new robot from the team that finished top 4 last year got to fight Rusty. Triple Crown, a bot that is from an experienced team but new to Battlebots gets Valkyrie. Not exactly fair is it?
It's really odd this season
Well blip is fighting valkyrie later this season, so... (Confirmed via the trailer)
The designers probably focused way too much on the driving and not the whole combating with weapons aspect
I can’t unsee the Czech flag on triple crown
I appreciate them not completely destroying triple crown. I think it could honestly win a fight or two if it gets the right matchup
When you bring a Fidget Spinner to a robot fight
Concept is awesome, just needs a few adjustments: lower and upper guards for the wheels (perhaps sloped to redirect the force of blows), and a longer reach weapon. They’ll be back!
The bot physically have a decent idea, but the complexity was bad, not because that's more areas to fail, but because that's more things for the driver to have to wrap his head around.
I think mecanum wheels could have done the same things just with less complexity
I wish there were more pictures and videos on Triple Crown, I’d love to see a teardown on how everything works!
Tombstone could probably do a teardown pretty quickly.
On the teams TH-cam channel (terra engineering) there's exactly that
That drive system on Triple Crown looks really formidable. Can't wait to see this bot with greater durability
Love these extra fights every week! Thank yall so much!
Triple Crown is onto something cool and I hope we see more like it in the future
Fight starts: 3:34
Fight ends: 4:16
42 seconds, one of the shortest fights this year. A second shorter than rampage vs retrograde
When the fight starts more than halfway through the video
How short was Huge’s first fight? That felt like 15 seconds.
Edit: official website says 59 seconds. Neat.
@@Niclmaki It felt a lot shorter than 59 seconds
@@Niclmaki yeah it did feel short, first hit did HUGE in, yet it was a while before the were officially stuck there
You clearly haven’t seen one of wrecks’ battles.
The announcer talking about the excitement of a rookie bot builder bring their bot in for the first while it's literally the least enthusiastic entrance ever is hilarious.
It's interesting to see innovations in the battle box, curious on how they will improve their bot
so before I see the results I wanna say, the more complex something is, the more that can go wrong, I REALLY like this bot and hope is does well...
Triple Crown be like: "I'm radioactive, radioactive 🎵"
Welcome to the new age. To the new age.
He was radioactive and Valkyrie was tombstone
It's ok, that robot looked really cool. Glad you gave it a try
@@Matthew-ib2xt Or swerve done in a more economical and practical fashion.
@@patrickmattin9609 because the robot wasn't finished in time

Battlebots need a better match making committee and this is exactly why
Yeah, the matchups have been especially puzzling and lopsided this season. Very disappointing that they can't do better with such a solid roster compared to 2020.
@@wristofkings My thoughts exactly, best roster in years, have matches like this....
Well, they've done a good job feeding their darling after the loss. First tombstone, now this
@@kirill1052 I still remember poor little Grabot, the committee always gave them like Tombstone or Gigabyte like c'mon..and you notice that team isn't there this year probably because they were thrown to the sharks and never given a fight to even show the little arms work, there was a child even on that team too, just a bad look really
A man once said
"The more sophisticated the device, the easier it is to destroy."
I love Valkyrie's Glory blade. Look at what it did to Rotator.
Fights like these just show the stark contrast between a battle hardened and fine tuned bot vs a newcomer.
Awesome.
What a gem! Like many of these ‘bots, it’s almost too pretty to fight! I also like the bot called Synchros, another complex machine that is beautifully designed and built.
No idea why this was recommended to me but it looks interesting! I'm ready to get one billion robot related video recommendations
I feel like a drive like that would work really well on a full body spinner
If you could make the bot small enough that would be terrific
@@Matthew-ib2xt ringmaster
TC has a great concept, just not the right geometry for a bot like Valkyrie!
Or Biohazard, my favourite battle robot ever.
Panzer Mk4 would have done worse actually. Technology has drastically changed and that bot series is cannon fodder by todays standards.
How about a Panzer MK 5?
Everyone: Super complicated massively destructive combat robot
Announcer: fidget spinner
Hah That's Chomp 3
chomp 1 is the crusher, chomp 2 is the overhead hammer, chomp 3 is the pneumatically powered walker.
When I saw triple crown my heart wanted it to win, but my brain knew that quite probably wasn't gonna happen lol
respectful victory for team Valkyrie. A surgical victory befitting of a true gladiator.
Guy wasn't wrong, it was a disaster
Wait, they're still making Battlebots? This thing is my childhood! One of the best parts of the day back as a kid, I gotta find a way to watch the full episodes.
Discovery channel or discovery plus
The ability to always face your opponent is a very powerful feature that could have allowed Triple Crown to win, However ether the driver or the controls made this advantage null.
Imagine robots taking over the humans in the future and robot kids learning about their ancestors as gladiators in their history class
I swear, some of the people who make these robots are absolutely genius, but lack any form of common sense.
You start with a high concept, then start to make is usable, see RotatŔ, HUGE, Lockjaw
It's always fun to watch a bunch of nerds have fun; The announcer, the costumes, the crowd going wild, the punchlines- it's all so over the top 😃
Real fight begins from 3:20
And ends very soon after that
that movement is so cool and has some awesome potential for Triple Crown, i hope they werent discouraged.
That was too easy for Valkyrie. And I remember in the intro of the first episode, their fight with Blip was previewed and it did not look good for them. I am very concerned about their chances making the top 32.
Valkyrie the hoverboard grinding wheel vs Trinity the buzzsaw office chair with kitty litter scoop!
3:34 green light
The more complex something is, the easier it is to break.
No, its not the most complicated, chomp is far too complex to be beaten out by a mere swerve drive
Heck even blip is more complicated than a swerve drive
2:26 "What you can expect in this fight is uh... How can I put it? Disaster"😅🤣
19s of fighting in a 4:58 fight vid.
Recently came across this and it’s the greatest thing ever.
Overly complicated bots never last long.
If the bot pilot was better they could have won this. All they needed to do is keep their spinner facing the other bot, but instead they had the wedge facing them the whole time, like they thought it was gonna take the hits or something.
Lol I may love triple crown but they got destroyed!
I loved this show as a kid, built one my self with a remote controlled monster truck with a 8 inch saw blade on the front
Awesome bot sadly complexity isn't the name of the game just hit hard and fast anymore
I think complex could win you just need to figure out your weak spots before you fight.
When you put most of your design in movement translation...this is what happens.
New bot looked pretty intimidating before it got hit… once:)
Sounds like a Mike Tyson quote: everyone's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.
There is an elegance in simplicity that Triple Crown proved to be true. Having too much going on usually means having more weak spots and doing a lot of things in mediocrity rather than one thing really well.
The wheel rubber was weak spot, especially for someone like Valkyrie.
The concept behind Triple Crown is interesting, but the compliments end there. It didn’t look like it was made to take hits, low hitting weapons can destroy its wheels, it has too much weight invested in the motion of the robot and not enough in actual armor or weaponry.
