I can remember watching Hogan win the title from Iron Sheik 1/23/1984. In June of 1984 Piper cracked Snuka with the coconut on Piper’s Pit. This was a fantastic time to be a child and watch all of these events unfold.

Roddy was fearless. This is the same guy who produced white heat by claiming to play the Mexican National Anthem on the bagpipes and play La Cucaracha. This is the same guy who coaxed a fan to come at him in the ring armed with a knife and stabbed Roddy. Piper was one of a kind. He knew how to work the audience but also knew what his worth was. I wish Roddy was still here today.

Imo, they should've ended it at Breaking Point 2009 because that was a great match that was brutal and was an emotional rollercoaster and a shining example of what modern wrestling should look like when it comes to being "Brutal" and "Hardcore". And it capped off an emotional multi-year feud. But they had to ruin it...

Piper not doing the job was why Piper was good. He was different, from every other heel, especially in the WWF at the time, which was very pro-face. The one bad thing about territory era wrestling was predictability. The business model dictated that faces always won, or got cheated. The NWA was a different model. There model was “heel champ cheats local baby face, every time”. It got old and predictable.

Rowdy Roddy Piper was one of the best heels of all time. A dirty brawler with the deadly air of a viper who would take on anyone.... and one of the best wits since Heenan, he was able to get under your skin like nobody else. As big of an asshole as he was, he was also entertaining which made him even better.

The weirdest thing I learned was that the Roddy finally actually put someone to sleep in the sleeper hold, and it was Hulk Hogan, and it was at Starrcade and how do they sell a PPV that is suppose to be the biggest of the year and have a non-title match in the main event? Not only do I not remember any of that, I can't believe they sold a non-title match. I didn't think they even did non-title matches after 1986.

I don't think they acknowledged that it was a non-title match until the show was going on.

They didn't say anything about the match being non-title in the build up. As a Piper fan since 1979, I did not care. Piper never needed a World title to be the main event. Being Champ means you have to job at some point. Piper didn't job, not even to Jack Brisco for the Mid Atlantic title. Valentine is the only job he ever did once getting to Crockett other than losing that Mid Atlantic belt (probably to Steamboat, don't recall specifically who) until way later as a part time to Brett. So in almost 15 years three clean loses to Greg Valentine, Brett Hart and (likely) Ricky Steamboat. That is Andre level booking, for a guy with a mouth.

It was the best-selling PPV they ever had up to that point. The story was that it wasn't about the title, it was personal, and they barely mentioned the title wasn't on the line. People were very annoyed he didn't win the belt, by all accounts, but they loved the victory so much it wasn't that huge a deal.

The fact that Roddy was never WWE champ really pisses me off, meanwhile Miz was not only world champ but he was in the main event at Mania & not CM Punk or Rollins pisses me off more, that's unbelievable.
