Bobby was a wrestling Genius. He could literally do anything. Very underated talent. He was probably Hogans greatest heel in his career. I miss the Brain. Rip Bobby

I met Roddy two weeks before he died at his last autograph signing in MD. He was such an amazingly nice guy. First thing was him asking me how I was, how my family is doing. Like we were long lost friends. He signed my dvd and then went into detail about the first WM match. Telling stories. My new phone was having problems with taking a selfie and Roddy says here let me see what I can do, don't worry, we have all the time we want. Just those few moments with him I could instantly see why this guy was such a well liked person and two weeks later it broke my heart when I was told he died. No way. This guy was so happy, so full of life that day and now he is gone? Easily the nicest wrestler and person I have ever met. I have met many celebs, wrestlers and a few who were just ready to move on to the next person, rush everyone. Not Piper. You could tell this guy really loved meeting with his fans, wanted to get to know his fans.

Roddy Piper sounds like wrestling's Joker. You're supposed to hate him, and he tries to get you to hate him. But the more you watch him, the more you are drawn in by him, the more you learn about him, and, eventually, the more you start to sympathize with him. You start to see yourself in him. Not the biggest guy, not the strongest or the fastest, but the toughest, just because he wants it the most. Eventually, you start to hope he wins, just a little, until, you realize, that maybe he was just a guy who had a bad hand dealt to him, so he decided to flip the table and do things his way.
THAT may well be the greatest description of why Piper was so popular I have ever read. Honestly, that says it all...

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper was one of the rare talents that did not need a world title reign or multiple reigns to become a household name and build a legacy, Piper became bigger than a world title reign.
that being said, I still wish that Piper had a run with the World Title even for a day or a week
Would have loved to see Piper with the belt... but really, when would it be? Interrupting Hogan's dominant run leading up to (and past) WM3? That was Hogan's time, Hulkamania was running wild.
He challenged Flair a couple of times after Flair won it in the Rumble, and that wasn't the right time either.
Maybe in the early 90s when the title bounced around a bit with Slaughter, Taker, Hogan they could have fit him in there for a short run. In the later 90s nobody would have care if he got a "who gives a shit, let him have a turn too" with the WCW belt that everyone got to hold.
You know what's crazy, according to fightdb he only ever had 141 matches across 32 years. His primary run from 84 to 94, he had 84 matches. Just 8.4 matches a year. He was always talking, always promoting, always hyping things up or getting set up at the announcers desk, but he didn't wrestle nearly as much as the top stars.
@@bobdonda the WCW belt didn't become the "who gives a shit, everybody gets a turn" belt until later 1999-2000, Roddy Piper had a long term feud with Hogan and the nWo in '98 when the belt was still pretty much a Hogan exclusive. He could have had a memorable run at this time.

At first i found it incredibly distasteful, but then i immediately thought of Piper and his sense of humor and relationship with Vince and im pretty confident he woulda approved of and laughed at the joke. It was right up Pipers alley. Plus, it was clear Vince has a favorable view of the man and ultimately speaks of him in highly positive terms.

Roddy was the greatest. My favorite wrestler of all time. And a great all around awesome person. Miss him quite a bit. This biography special was awesome, and you can see how much he was loved by his wife, kids, all his friends and wrestler buddies, etc.
My cousin worked on that biography. She was a personal friend of Roddy.
Piper is top 10 for sure.. for sure best man to never win a WORLD title.....its a joke Piper never won 1 world title but guys like Cena were handed multiple world titles..wrestling got weird after F left lol.

I was living in Oregon & used to watch Portland Wrestling every week. My mom could not stand Piper because of his arrogance & wagging his finger in the camera. I got to see Piper Live when I was living in Pendleton. I caught most of the A&E show & I have to say, I was in tears at the end. Piper was one of the greats in wrestling & part of an era that is nothing but a memory now. R.I.P. Hot Rod, you are now & will always be missed.
@Rex Hazelwood, Don Owens had an awesome territory, he had a good mix of legends & veterans like Dutch Savage, Bull Ramos, Larry Henning & Tony Borne just to name a few along with the current & upcoming talent at the time like Curt Henning, Matt Borne, Jesse Ventura, Jimmy Snuka, Colonel Debeers, Buddy Rose & many others.

I saw him in Portland when I was a kid. What a legend!
When he came back in the late 80s early 90s he was huge for the territory. I remember him giving the shine to Art Barr at the time. I used to go to Portland to watch live shows and would go to local shows in Washington. He was always a highlight
I enjoyed the Biography of Piper. He was one of the best heels in Wrestling. Just as good as Stone Colds Biography. A&E is doing a phenomenal job

He had Will Sasso pretending to be Austin and Jim Duggan was making a lot of comments about Austin's domestic abuse. Debra beater heard it and got Piper kicked off Podcast One, then went like a little bitch to WWE and got Piper fired from his Legend's contract.
Austin didn’t kick him off though, Piper left because he didn’t want any drama or bs to take place just as Steve wouldn’t. Not defending Steve for being upset, but he didn’t get Hot Rod fired.

My favorite part of that documentary is the story with The Guerreros and he told a crowd in Mexico he was going to play their national anthem on the bagpipes and instead played La Cucaracha. Roddy was the man , no wrestler today could ever come close to getting the heat Roddy did

Same here. I still remember the day he died and hearing about it. I broke down hard-core. I don't think another wrestler or celebrity death ever hit me that hard. Still miss Hot Rod.

When Hogan was heel in WCW, he actually put people over. Including Piper.
I was just like "typical Hogan." It's not that he didn't want to do the job as a heel. He didn't want to job to Mr T. And there's no fucking way Hogan does it either, if the roles are reversed. That woulda basically buried Piper, and he knew it. He was already pissy about working with non wrestlers, you really think he was going to irreparably damage his career for someone else's vanity project?
My favorite part of the episode was Mr T keeping kayfabe alive and talking about how pissed he was when Piper hit him from behind when he was coming in to help Cindi Lauper lol

I was lucky enough to go to the
Olympic Auditorium several times in the 70’s to see Piper and Chavo, John Tolos, Greg Valentine etc. Even as a 13 year old kid, I could tell Piper was destined for greatness.
I went to Portland Wrestling every Saturday and Tuesday nights growing up. Piper. Rose. Snuka. Ventura. Henning. Andre. So many more came through the Territory. Met Piper many times over the years as we lived in same area. Piper and Kitty were so nice. RIP Mr. Toombs.

The best thing in documentary for me was how they showed Piper's notebook. He literally wrote down his every classic promo, prepared and studied. You shouldn't be a comedy genius with impeccable timing and improvising skills to do magic on the mic. Just get your material together beforehand, and prepare. Then people would think you did it on a fly.

As many feuds as Hogan has had I will always consider Rowdy Roddy Piper as Hulk Hogan's nemesis. Probably my first introduction to Roddy Piper was from the 85' cartoon Hulk Hogan's Rockin' Wrestling. It was that cartoon that got me hooked on wrestling. I loved Piper's Pit. It was the highlight to those WWF wrestling shows. He was so charismatic and such a great heel. Then later he went to color commentary and eventually turned face. I don't think he ever went back to being heel afterwards. But he truly was an icon in wrestling. He will always be one of the most cherished wrestlers from my childhood. They'll never be another Rowdy Roddy Piper. And when he left that message on Hogan's answering machine saying he's walking with Jesus, I pray that it's true.
Even though I have no memories of any of his matches, as a little kid Roddy Piper was one of my favorites because of his performance, mentality, attitude, etc.
His appearance on Always Sunny is great. There's a weird hilarity to the character, gives off this vibe like "Dude is he for real?" and all the great bits he does yet still feels like there's all kinds of troubling history in the guy you can't just laugh it off as a goofy character.
Edit: Just remembered my brother and I got our parents to quit smoking because of Wrestlemania V.
The Piper Biography was definitely one of my all time favorites, but the end was really sad to see. I never realized that in his last interview before he died, he was having a hard time putting together a thought or sentence when they guy was asking him a question. Really hard to watch after knowing how quick witted, intelligent and awesome on promos he was over the years.

Hot Rod was one of the greatest, Piper's Pit was so funny I usually laughed out loud. The one where he busted the coconut over Jimmy Snuka's head was a classic, and real, he actually hurt him because it was a real coconut.
Piper has always been my favorite all time wrestler. Unique, no one was like him, whether he was a heel, a face, or somewhere in between. He was also great in “They Live” and as “The Maniac” on “Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia”.
Hot Rod was the greatest. He was an awkward, but great worker, a psycho, a great promo, a great actor. Such a loss. Such a roller coaster of a life.
I was curious if they were gonna skip pass the part where Piper was taken advantage of as a Ring boy. He partly blamed himself.( I thought they would skip that because it was very personal),
All that, and Piper said in an interview they played, he said about Vince before he died, "I love that a**hole."
I met Roddy when I was in High School. I was working at a gas station in Hillsboro OR and he stopped by several times to get gas. He was always very approachable and was a genuinely nice guy. I meet him again latter at a local comedy club. He did a set and had the crowd rolling with laughter. In the late 70's Roddy and Rose was the reason I would tune in to Portland Wrestling.
I grew up watching Big Time wrestling too. What a lineup. Piper, Rose, Dutch Savage, Bull Ramos, Buddy Rose, Lonny Moondog Mayne, Rip Taylor, The Royal Kangaroos, Jimmy Snuka

@@randylynch4330 If there are fans watching the show, even if they're "new fans", I'm sure they've more than likely either SEEN & HEARD of the 4H documentary that was put on DVD BY VINCE'S COMPANY, as well as seen & VARIOUS videos here on YT like the history of the 4H, also mid-atlantic & GCW footage that obviously Ole's in because simply put HE WAS A MAIN EVENT STAR IN THE CAROLINAS & HE OWNED THE GEORGIA TERRITORY BEFORE CROCKETT BOUGHT IT. My point is, If they're going to do docs like this, you can't & shouldn't ignore parts of history. I think it's been well- documented that Vince likes to revise or reinvision history when it to the business to how he wants it to be, BUT if he wants to do more of these in the future, he should tell the WHOLE STORY OR DON'T TELL THE STORY AT ALL. I mean, if Vince still has heat with Ole, then that's his cross to bear.
Yeah he has a network on Peacock that is full of Crockett Promotions footage, produced a DVD about WCW that talked about the promotion, and various other things, but you still calim Vince refuses to acknowledge Crockett Promotions. You are so wrong it's funny.

I really think Vince should call Cornette and have Jim be one of the main curator for the HOF/museum. Jim would be the perfect guy in the business to welcoming fans and lead them through the histories of the archives and exhibits, Jim, Flair, and Hunter.
Gosh, Jim is so right on about Roddy's facials. Piper was a believable brawler who would bust out a bulldog at the appropriate moment.

I liked the biography special, especially the parts that Kitty spoke about at the end of his life. The show you were thinking of that Roddy was on was “The Rich Eisen Show”. Always great watching Roddy doing interviews, but he looked bad. Almost jaundicy. Around his eyes specifically. Great podcast, Mr. Cornette. Thank you.

1st seen Roddy in '81 with Georgia Championship Wrestling..he attacked Tommy Rich and was blown away how intense he was..became my favorite from there on
Piper died young, I remember how shocking and sad it was, people who don't watch or like wrestling were talking to me about his death back in 2015.

I loved Roddy Piper so much since I was ten years old (1990-ish) that when he died, I posted the Lex Express theme "I'll Be Your Hero" on my Facebook and I cried. I even met him twice and he was great to fans, including me. The second time he didn't remember me and I think the reason he gave me a hug was because he could kind of tell I was disappointed.

I saw Piper live at The Omni in Atlanta circa 1982, 4th row ringside -he was turning face and doing a program with Don Muraco. He came out at the end of Muraco’s match, they stared each other down, Piper turned away, Muraco took a swing but Piper decked him with a roll of quarters.

you can literally watch it on their website, A&E is cool like that. It's also a nice documentary, just watched it. Piper was the best, the ending of the doc was a bit depressing, but only because it reminds me how how weird it is that he's gone.

Roddy had all the tools. He just had this huge chip on his shoulders. That 'i'm never going to let anyone take anything away from me' mentality prevented him from doing bigger business as Hogan said during the telecast.
Everybody knew that the Treasures show was fake when we noticed that every one of the “supa fans” all wear WWE shirts. they knew that WWE was coming and most likely sold them their own stuff back

@@PDD82031 Nothing he sad was proof the show was fake. WWE super fans are most likely tyo be the ones to buy the WWE memorabilia. WWe also put out feelers looking for the stuff, so when they knew WWE was going to come to film, of course they are going to put on WWE clothing. He knows nothing.
Roddy was very in depth person. I lliked the docu very much. He was one of the greats!
