    This is amazing. The finished product as seen in the second video looks great!! I love that you can see some of the brown wood tones come thru the grey. This is exactly what I am looking for to stain my pantry door!

    This is exactly what I want. A stain job where you can see the grain of the wood but it doesn't look streaky or weathered. Nice job! 💛

    Love this technique. I used the java gel stain on a bathroom vanity about 8 years ago and it turned out great. Do you think that these products would work for refinishing an acacia wood table that I have outside on my patio? It's exposed to all the elements. I came across your channel in my search for the best products to use. Any suggestions you could give would be much appreciated!

    The only issue I see is that when wiping off the stain, you left A TON of streak marks and did not get it all off. the shops I worked out would kick my butt if I left that much streaking stain on. Don't be afraid to wipe harder - get all that stain off, don't leave streaks.

    Thank you for the video. I restored a nice oak art deco table, solid wood, no veneer. It has beel stripped and sanded to bear wood. The oak looks rather yellowish, so I was looking for a modern color finish. I think I will try this one. I just wonder if this stain is resilient enough for a table top. Should I add a coat of carnauba wax?

      You can use most any stain as long as you coat (at least 3 coats) of polycrylic on top after you put colour stain. I used Minwax company on my kitchen table top and it's wonderful

    I am planning to GF gel stain a kitchen table in gray similar to this with wood from Malaysa. I lightly sanded all the surfaces. Is this table sanded down closer to bare wood? Will I get the same results? I practiced on the base pieces last night and it seemed to wipe off close to where I started. Your feedback is appreciated.

  • @lizcrafts1

    I just tried doing this with my HUGE table. The first stain didn’t come out right because I didn’t use a conditioner (rookie error) then I sanded it again and then see minwax semi transparent stain after the conditioner because I didn’t like the color of the other one. Dried and looked very splotchy. I used it like paint because I didn’t want to sand again, loved the color and then put polycrylic on it. 4 coats of the polycrylic and when I put something on the table it’s lefts a ton of scratch marks😭. I sanded it with steel wool at this point to get a duller look and sprayed some furniture polish of it. Shockingly it looks pretty good for now but I think I’ll be stripping it soon and starting from scratch. What stain are you using and what do you recommend for a top coat that won’t be a nightmare with scratches? Thank you 😊

    I agree with your philosophy..I too am a veteran of many recipes.. I was doing research for how to do the grey and white that the millennials love so much when I found this.. Much of what you say is EXACTLY what I learned from bitter experiences.. You do seem kinda stuck on Java when instead good recipes can be found for all kinds of general finishes products..When combined with other products.. Just saying a man can never have too many good recipes for different finishes on different woods..

    • @darr1964
      @darr1964  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is not that I am stuck on Java or refinishing kitchen cabinets in some sort if white. I simply do what the customers ask for. I like mixing different stains to get unique colors. I also use water based stains and spray different color toners to get the layered effect.

    why wood conditioner on pine vs mineral spirite like oat? Is pine more pourous than oak?

    • @darr1964
      @darr1964  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wood conditioner makes the stain absorb evenly and won't look blotchy. Minwax makes wood conditioners for water-based and oil-based stains. On water-based once it dries you will feel like a fuzzy feeling on it. That's from wood grain rising, so just give it a scuff sanding to remove it all. This doesn't happen on oil-based. If you're just adding clear coat and not staining do a water pop. Once you have wood or plywood sanded spray some distilled water on it, once dry scuff sand all the fuzz.

    • @ELEVOPR
      @ELEVOPR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@87_North Not true, most wood stains, are clear in their instructions. 5-7 Minutes. I usually leave it anywhere from 4-5 minutes and never had an issue. Wood doesn't get dark because you leave it for 5-7 minutes. They reason they say to leave it that long is after 5-7 minutes is the wood cannot absorb any more after that amount of time . If you don't wipe off the excess it will turn gummy like.
      Don't believe? Trunk the stain can around and read the instructions..

      You need to sand down to bear wood. Sand with 120 grit, vacuum and wipe down. If you are using oil based stain wipe down with mineral spirits. Let sit for about 1 minute and wipe dry. Now you can apply stain. If you want it darker make sure it's completely dry and apply another coat of stain.
