Hi. I would love more information on the book. I would like to buy it but need more info before I spend that much money. I would love to know what it covers and how many pages. Is there somewhere I can get that info? I love all your projects!! Thank you for doing the videos. It helps so much
I fricken love gel stain. I bought a 1980 house with the old cherry colored door frames, moulding, and window sills. I decided to keep the wood trim (with updated moulding, doors, etc.) I found a good color match, and after cleaning and a little prep, I go over the door frames with gel stain using a rag. It really pops out a warmth to the wood and dries with a little sheen. Really nice. I feather brush on the sills. OMG! It looks really nice. I luv gel stain. So glad I didn't paint it all white. I appreciate wood tones so much more.
Very nice. Great way, to give old furniture a more modern look. I often see second hand furniture like that, for next to nothing on resale sites. Well made, mostly real wood...but nobody wants it, because it looks too old fashioned. Sadly, I don't have a home to furnish, or I would be all over it! But I love, that there are people, who save these pieces from the dumpster and give them a second life!
@@sarahbecker927 no I put them in wet with paint. Oil paint doesn't freeze. It works with water based paints too. You just have to let them thaw out for 5 minutes,
Beautiful! I did a coffee table for myself using your technique and it turned out amazing! I used water stain gel and top coated with water based polyurethane. The top was laminate and now looks like real wood! Thanks so much for sharing. Good luck with your book. It sounds really interesting.
I repainted 1974 kitchen cabinets in a rental (thankfully grooved flat face) with oil paint in 1998 in a biscuit white. That finish lasted 20+ years. The last tenant (for 11 years) didn’t take the best care so I repainted them after her. Same color and oil paint. They turned out so nice. Yes cleanup required turpentine and a little extra time and odor BUT the reward of durability and being able to clean the finish, let alone getting 20 years of service is well worth it. The paint went on like a dream. It’s not going to happen with acrylic paints. I used alkyd in my own house which is another awesome cabinet finish. 😊 I just refinished a gorgeous kneehole desk in Minwax oil based gel stain in Espresso (black brown). It went on and leveled like a dream. So smooth. I just sanded the old finish.
Thanks for the video, I'm going to try this on a huge mirror that has a black plastic frame. One thing I'll point out. I feel like the faux wood grain inside the sides of your cabinets should have been verticle to match the outside, as it would have with real wood.
This technique was popular in the 60's and 70's, I still see pieces at auctions. There was a kit you could buy at that time. Btw, nice job, looks great.
Thanks so much for this video. I have been racking my brain on how to change the color on some things for update and cohesive look thats doable for me. Bless your soul girl and hope book does great
(ps: for the dry time, i have always added this amazing paint additive called "Japan Drier" to my oil paints and/or oil based inks and it always cuts the dry time by at least half and that's me being generous! you can find it in any art store including Michaels usually in the same section as all the oil paints as it is an oil based paint medium meant to speed up drying times. i have never tried it on gel stain specifically but i am going to for my project that i am about to do which is why i am watching this video so i will update my comment as soon as i try it out!) Hey great video! this video was a perfect find for me as i couldn't decide what color to paint my door and there is a bunch of graffiti on it so staining (well i thought) was going to be out of the question as i was unable to completely get off the ink, even after sanding ~ 7 layers plus of paint/wood! the ink they used had seeped incredibly deep past all the paint and into the wood of my door lmao! but anyways your vid came as a godsend as i just happened to have a bunch of the grey killa/ bin laying around and an unused can of red mahogany varathane laying around so i am about to try your easy to follow method and keep you all updated on how it turns out!!
Congratulations on your book, one i must get my hands on! And thank you for sharing your amazing work. I'm anxious to give this a try so i can help my daughter find more economical ways to furnish her home!
this is my favorite finish, look, and even one of my favorite colors schemes. Thanks for sharing the exact colors you used. Whst did you end up doing with the inside of the drawer? Here in Seattle, WA it's a very long dry time. Better to leave it longer when in doubt. Routinely primer is 48 hours, paint a full day (not 2-4 hours). I have a problem that may make an interesting video. I have a beam on my white ceiling .I would love to get it too look like brown wood. At least woodish. Doesn't have to be wood knots etc. Woodish would be good enough. Maybe even this whole deal would be fine. Or would it? And what colors would one go with for a brown woodish look? Yhanks for sharing.
You could certainly do this finish or any others on my channel to create a wood look on your beam, just tape off the areas needed to protect. XO MaCenna here on youtube recently stripped her wood beam and it looked like it was a real beast of a project 😅
I just bought your book, Shannon and am anxious ...oh so anxious to delve in! You are an amazing person who proves you use what you have and it always turns out beautiful! Thank you for the work.
I did this technique- discovered it on my own 7 years ago - on a table. I did a small side table without a topcoat and a larger table with topcoat. After 7 years of everyday use, all I can say is: Topcoat! Topcoat! Topcoat!
Watching you, I really want to do this! I have a small space and a lot of stuff! Thank you! Keep up the great work! Some day, I will get to do my dream!
I used that technique many years ago to turn my woodwork from a 90’s light blonde to an old European walnut in my hundred year old stone Tudor home! It looked fabulous. And so easy. I may have used a water based gel stain though.
I love your excitement! They look great! I know you posted this video about a year ago, but I have a quick question. Do you finish your pieces with polyurethane? Would you put poly-u on top of gel stain? What do you suggest?
Hey, Shannon! Question for you -- I watched your video from a year ago when you used Rust-Oleum decorative glaze instead of the gel stain. Do you have a preference? Is the gel stain better than the glaze? I'm about to start a project and eager to get it right the first time! Thanks!!
So if I were to do similar. Use the first 2 paints you used, but if I wanted to do say a walnut gel stain color, I can do that, or does the paint color have to be different then?
Right, it’s super durable as is 🥳 sometimes I do a matte topcoat of there are a lot of imperfections like dents and dings in the wood I didn’t fill showing up after I’m done
So I loved the base paint color and I did that then I used the gel stain color you used on amazon and I swear my color looks a lot more brown then your gray color, but I went ahead and used it
what?! Such a bummer, I'm sorry! I'm sure you did but just want to double check that you gave the gel stain a good stir before you got going?? But ya, mine is a warm grey color and I have had several people comment theirs came out too gray so this is the first time I am hearing about the brown. Varathane does sell a more gray gel stain but I havent used it.

I have a light colored dresser that has the wood grain laminate. Can I just clean it and then use the gel stain over it to give it that weathered gray look without having to print them and do a solid paint?

This is gorgeous, I bought everything today! It'd be great not to have to use a top coat, yours looks so nice and no top coat, correct? I want the exact same look!!! Thank you, congrats on the book, anxious to get it!
@@danielleweston1492no topcoat bc it’s oil based stain. But you need to be VERY carful until it cures. Not just dries, but cures. Prob at least 30 days at the minimum. I’ve done this with General Finishes gel stain and once it dries and cures it’s pretty much on there until you remove it. If you put a top coat on this, it’ll fail bc the gel stain is oil based. You can use an oil based top coat, if you must, but it will yellow over time.
You do not need a top coat if using oil based gel stain. If you use a water based glaze as your topcoat, best to use water based polyurethane. She recommended matte polyurethane but I have found satin finish just makes the furniture look richer. Play around on a sample board and see what you like.

I just ran across this video. I already have a table top sanded down to wood. Will this same technique on unfinished wood?
I'm doing the same thing. I prefer not to prime. I think I'll just skip it and go to paint. I have a Pine Tall Boy dresser
This is gorgeous, I bought everything today! It'd be great not to have to use a top coat, yours looks so nice and no top coat, correct? I want the exact same look!!! Thank you, congrats on the book, anxious to get it!
I have same question. Is a top coat not required over this gorgeous finish?
@@serita2279This can of gel stain specifically states that a top coat is needed. There are no protective properties in gel stain.
Do you clear coat it after the oils based stain??
You don’t need to but you could, the gel stain alone is really super durable
Hi can i use this over painted cabinets?
Hi, do you think this would work or be durable on wooden steps? Thank you
Is the semi gloss paint you have oil based or water? Can you put the oil based gel paint on top of the water base paint?
Water based. You can.
P.S. Can I use Java Gel Stain? It is oil based.
Is this finish durable enough for heavy use area like bathroom vanities and kitchen cabinets?
