GameSpot Universe, I think the most important clue to what is going on in season 3 is given in the season 2's ominous cliffhanger catchphrase "how's Annie?".
How is she, indeed? In season 3, she's most unexpectedly gone like she never was, only being mentioned in the two pages of Laura's secret diary and even then as only having visited her in a dream. This dream scene was shown in Fire Walk with Me but curiously the words that Annie said to Laura were from another scene in season 2.
Most curiously, Cooper himself has forgotten all about Annie, in whatever place or state he is shown to be in. She was his love interest and he was desperate about her fate at the end of season 2, but now his mysterious secretary Diane appears to have taken her place as the target of his emotions. That as such is a surprise development as Cooper had never shown any such interest towards Diane who also as a character is very different from Annie.
During season 3, Diane uses "Naido" and "Linda" as her aliases. Both names have been derived from Diane by replacing one letter and then rearranging the name.
It is easy to see that "Annie" can also be derived from Diane by replacing one letter and then rearranging the name. Introducing two aliases for Diane serves the purpose that existence of a third alias becomes evident.
Lynch seems to imply that Annie was actually Diane, in whatever way one wants to interpret that. In Diane's role, he had also cast one of his most popular actresses, further underlining her importance.
What does this imply? Is Lynch suggesting that already in season 2 we were in Diane's dream?
And was season 3 yet another one of her dreams? Was it all because she wanted Cooper for herself? And then, when she finally got him as herself in Part 18, it was not at all what she wanted, and she abruptly abandoned the dream and left him adrift there.
In a nutshell, Dale Cooper bit off more than he could chew. I know dreams are involved and I think that it was a dream instead of a time/dimension jump that Dale and Diane entered when they crossed the 430 mile marker. It's Laura dreaming. Her scream at the end is her waking up. So not all of it was a dream, and there was a time jump when Dale goes back in time to save Laura.

I'm so glad Norma kept her original Cherry Pie recipe despite the television networks wanting to cheapen it to make it more digestible for the masses... I mean... I'm so glad Lynch kept creative control over Twin Peaks... ;)
Well the other shops/stations where actually doing better business than Norma's Shop/Show All they were using were cheaper ingredients/lower budget
(some misspent on having dreams in Paris) Or French women taking 5 mins to leave a hotel room. A network is a business where profit is god! Not an art gallery. Many investors were called apon to make these 'Cherry Pies' and I bet all of them want to know if they will re-Coop (Get it!) their money. If you really want full creative control make super 8 home made pies and sell them in your yard...Or gallery!
Norma's cherry pie is much more delicious than the pies from the other businesses though. So much that I could revisit her diner to eat 18 more pies just after I ate them. ;) I cannot say the same about the majority of other shows... I mean, pies.

James Angel I agree. Lynch's "creative control" over the Return was like if Norma replaced all of R&R's excellent recipes with random new ones that she saw in many different restaurants. A few "dishes" / moments of the Return were fantastic, but it was a failure overall. This time, Lynch has no one to blame but himself.

Minor thing I just noticed: when Dale and 'Carrie' drive past the RR Diner, the 'RR2GO' sign, which was there only in season 3, was missing. This would be another clue that they are in a different timeline.
Episode 17 is what people want and episode 18 is what reality is.
I predict that at some point in the future, the moment where Coop ask what year it is followed by Laura screaming -flash-going black, will go down as one of the most disturbing and greatest endings to any movie/TV show, ever.

Rob Stamper, I doubt that as we seem to have been shown Sarah Palmer indeed alive inside the Palmers house of Part 18. Let me clarify.
When the Palmers' house was shown on the outside in Part 2, it preceded a scene that showed a boozing Sarah Palmer watching television. The house was exactly the same house as in the final scene in Part 18, with all the plants in the front and all the lamps and curtains we can see exactly the same. This was not any recycled footage as the takes were not the same. The times of day differed and the lamps had been turned on differently but the exact likeness was underlined by using the same camera position and angle. The houses were deliberately the very same house.
In comparison, when Hawk visited Sarah in Part 12 and they had a chat at the door (with hawk addressing Sarah as "Sarah"), we were also given a good long look at the house. We could immediately see that this was not the exact same house as in Part 2 and Part 18 as the plants in the front of the house were totally different. Lynch also positioned the camera differently, not using the same place and angle as in Parts 2 and 18.
Two other scenes about Sarah took place in the same space that we saw in Part 2. She was watching a boxing match in Part 13 and then wailing and smashing Laura's picture in Part 17. Curiously, Laura's picture was not visible in the first two scenes, cut just outside the frame. Sarah's attempts to destroy it were in vain as the picture curiously persisted.
It seems that all these three Sarah scenes from Parts 2, 13 and 17 were from the Part 18 reality, presumably shortly before Cooper and Laura showed up at the door. Sarah stayed confined to her home, drank heavily and watched violence from TV. No sign of the monster that lurked inside of her.
Part 2 is very important in understanding what happens in part 18.
Stephen Clark, in Part 18 we have resolution for the third Cooper who was seen sitting with the Fireman in the first seen of Part 1. Resolution for the other Cooper, who we saw as Dougie, came at the end of Part 17.
Aki, I just rewatched much of the series. I think that, in a way, you can watch eps. 1-3 and 16-18 and get nearly all of Cooper's character arc. Those eps. plus ALL the scenes involving Mr. C is the heart of the show. I think it is possible that Cooper is right back in the Red Room/Black Lodge.
Great work! This is my take: With the exception of Laura’s real life experiences in FWWM (which gives the viewer context for understanding her trauma), the entire series is BOTH Laura's and Cooper's dream. In the opening credits, we see the world of Twin Peaks through Laura’s grad photo, which fades in and out of view. As well, at the end of the Finale, we hear the identical "Laura" spoken by Sarah as we hear in S1E1 when Sarah thinks that Laura is just sleeping in. Laura, mortified by her experiences with her sexually abusive father, creates Bob and Judy (constructions of her subconscious) to trick herself into thinking that her own father can’t possibly be responsible; the former representing the evil that men do, and the latter a representation of explaining away his actions. Laura dreams of being saved from the horror by the "perfect" father figure (ie. Cooper) as an antidote to her father. At the mid-way point of the Finale, we discover, upon Cooper waking up, that he too was wrapped up in a dream (his dream within Laura's dream). He awakes to the reality that he is actually Richard -- a combination of Cooper and Mr.C, a man who is not unlike the viewer, trying to figure out all the clues in the name of our lifelong quest to have good (Cooper) win over evil (Mr.C), and how we balance all this with our quest for love. Recording messages on his tape recorder was the way he envisioned Cooper, the ideal good man, to be close to Linda, while he was busy with the FBI. Audrey, Annie, Caroline were all distractions and fantasies because he couldn't actually be with Linda due to his work. Yet he was obsessed with the perfect American family unit; in his dream, he achieves this ideal through his tulpa, the Cooper that Janey-E and Sonny Jim now refer to as Dougie/dad. He was so absorbed in his dream that he could not comprehend his own identity when he awoke (Dear Richard... Richard?). His awakening at this time though functions as a foreshadowing of Laura's own awakening. We find Laura in Odessa because she has travelled there (and into an older person) via the synapses in her own brain, which is indicated by the electrical pole we see outside her home. It is not an accident, therefore, that Richard believes and refers to Carrie as a ‘girl’ and not a ‘woman’ named Laura. As Richard is driving her back to Twin Peaks, Laura is realizing that she is coming towards the end of her dream, and so tries to force herself to continue sleeping as a way to escape her inevitably waking up to reality. When Richard asks, “What year is this?” it forces Laura to think rationally and in the context of time. After Laura screams, she awakes to her mother calling for her. While she may be alive, the problem is she is now fully aware of her situation, and has to somehow overcome her own waking life knowledge of what has happened to her and the panic and dread of its potential continuation.
She ran away from home. To survive the trauma she forgot. When she heard her mothers/judys voice calling her she remembered it all. With that blood curdling scream. Bob/dad and judy/mom is is the worst hell imaginable

The motel that "Richard and Linda" arrive at night is not the same that "Richard" gets out in the morning. I haven't seen anyone talk about that.
Did you notice the arm said exactly the same as Audrey said to Charlie in Part 13?

Come to think of it, both Charlie and the Arm in it's original form were short, middle aged white men. Is it possible that Charlie was the Arm all along?

I couldn't but notice that in part 18 Richard/Dale only shows a badge and NOT a proper ID. So despite he is saying and believing to be special agent Dale Cooper, his ID may be of Richard Someone.
I feel like when we hear Sara Yell "Laura" and she screams at the end that it is Laura being woken up on the morning that the Pilot takes place because that moment seems to make the whole world instantly go black after some electric flashes and noises.
Y'know... While I did enjoy the third season, I really preferred the more down-to-earth tone of the original two (more down-to-earth-- never thought I'd be describing Twin Peaks that way, but here we are). To me, putting things on a grander scale, getting so esoteric, actually made things feel smaller. The evil in the original was a natural force, something that could very well exist within humans, but is beyond their control and understanding. That's a great metaphor for our own animal natures. But when you start focusing on things like the atomic bomb... to me, that makes it feel like it's making evil something more human, something we created ourselves. And making Laura Palmer some cosmic entity to combat evil takes away that sense that she was just an ordinary girl who got caught up in something greater than herself. Sure, there were implications in Fire Walk With Me that she sacrificed herself to save the rest of the town, but there, it felt like that was based on decisions she made, not some kind of destiny. Plus, the fact that we don't see as much of the supernatural stuff leaves more to the imagination. Even if what we see in season 3 is incomprehensible... I dunno, part of the appeal of the original Twin Peaks for me was that... It was grounded in reality, which made almost made it feel like it could really happen, like there could really be this whole other world just beyond our sight. And there were so many moments of uncomfortable reality, like Leland at Laura's funeral? That tonal dissonance, where it's so tragic, but at the same time, comical? That kind of discomfort is something you find in real life, because no, we don't get appropriately dramatic music at tragic moments, our facial expressions at those moments are often ugly. There was less of that kind of thing in season 3, and there was more focus on the bizarre.
That having been said, there were some really interesting things going on. Like, I noticed that most of the settings were places that, in real life, have had some kind of nuclear testing or nuclear accident. It seemed to me like the Experiment spewing out the garbonzia, or whatever, along with BOB, was like a direct reaction to the bomb, a counterpart in the other world (I mean, the atomic bomb was kind of an experiment itself). And when the soot entities showed up... I'm sure they were meant to call to mind bomb victims. The part where they infiltrate the town interested me a lot. To me, it seemed to have to do with radiation poisoning. To begin with, the woodsman is associated with fire and ignition, because he smokes and keeps saying, "Got a light?" He seems to infect people through the air, and he keeps talking about the water and the well, which seemed like a reference to contamination in the water. Which is definitely a problem even many years after an atomic explosion. I took the thing crawling into the girl's mouth as a form of contamination. The series already had cancer as a theme; several characrters have it (Harry, the log lady, Beverly's husband), and Jacobi talks a lot about how contamination in food makes us sick (even if it is played for laughs). And what is cancer? It's uncontrolled cell growth, uncontrolled... duplication. Which of course reminds me of doppelgangers. And of course, there's a duality to nuclear power, too, since it can be incredibly destructive, but it can also be a power source. Like for electricity. Which is obviously also really important in the series. In fact, I think nuclear energy and electricity are portrayed as just different kinds of energy, both of which link worlds. I really think I'm onto something there.

I actually really enjoyed the long quiet car ride sequence. I think it may have been a way of hypnotizing the audience. It made me very sleepy and it reminded me of riding in the back of a car as a child at night. Going in and out of sleep. listening to the sound of cars passing.
Why does Major Briggs seems to be so in control of the time travel thing, knowing stuff, warning people about stuff and Cooper seems to be so lost in the other time line?

On a personal note, I just wanted to thank you guys for all the work you've put into these videos. Watching them's become almost as important a part of the Twin Peaks experience as the episodes themselves.
I found it interesting that no matter how many times Sarah stabbed at the photo, it was impervious to damage. It also seemed like the video was rewinding and replaying. Watch how the glass bounces during that scene.
I noticed that too and haven't seen anyone else bring it up. There were other looped around Sarah too. Remember the boxing match.
Judy can't unmake Laura, but she can hide her in multiple realities. At the same time, Cooper cannot save her and take her home, at least in the original timeline/reality of the series. Only in alternate, dream worlds can she reached.
I actually heard someone else mention that about her only breaking the glass, not disturbing the photo on the channel "Obnoxious and Anonymous" which is a great channel as well & I'd recommend it to any fans who haven't checked it out!
Yeah, I took that as Laura's reality/fate cannot be changed, either by Judy or Cooper. Neither Judy's rage or Cooper's compassion cannot change her fate. She was created (or predicted) by the giant in ep. 8 and later, chronologically in FWWM, died refusing to let Bob take her over. Both Judy and Cooper are frustrated by that reality. That's my take, though many do not agree! :-)

I hadn't thought about the whole time travel angle. I was leaning more towards the dream side of things. Now you've added a whole other level of theories for me to explore. This will never end!
I find The Return to be a metaphor for the mental prisons of ourselves. Much like Cooper is trapped inside Dougie for most of the season, Judy puts people in mental prisons to feed off of their suffering. This is why a girl at the roadhouse crawls across the floor and screams. Physically present in our world while perceiving another.
Andreas Nordvall Cooper as Dougie is in vegetative state because he is stuck in Janey-E's dream until he electrocutes himself and "wakes up" to his own dream.
I like that theory. What's wonderful about the show is that there are many levels to the show.
"Judy" definitely holds that metaphorical meaning in the same way that BOB could be a metaphor for the evil that men do. It is certainly a theme running throughout the entirety of the show!
Andreas Nordvall, there is terrible evil lurking in the corners in the world of Twin Peaks, evil by men and evil by supernatural forces ... but I have started to think Judy is not part of that side of the plot. She had an entirely different function.
As the season 3 plot is extremely complex, I summarise my thoughts heavily to avoid them becoming a short novel:
Judy was the "stone" in the Fireman's plan to get "two birds with one stone".
Season 3 started with THREE Coopers. One was in the Black Lodge. His doppelganger was loose in the world. And then there was one more Cooper in the White Lodge, appearing in Parts 1 and 18. This Cooper was a copy of agent Dale Cooper that had been created by a broken timeline when Phillip Jeffries visited Gordon Cole's office eight days before Laura Palmer's murder, as shown in Fire Walk with Me. Ever since then he had been in the White Lodge, in whichever manner he ended up there.
The "birds" of the plan were the Cooper in the Black Lodge and his doppelganger. The purpose was to get the former to the White Lodge and the latter back to the Black Lodge. That done, the third Cooper in the White Lodge could retire, having spent 25 years there.
The birds were too eager to know what Judy was. This eagerness was used to manipulate them to their planned fates. Both went to search for Judy but neither found her. There was no Judy in the sense that they thought there might be. She was a hoax that was meant to motivate the Black Lodge Cooper and his doppelganger deep into the rabbit hole until they had no turning back any more.

I find it anything other than the endearingly strange Twin Peaks we once new. Some of Lynch’s sloppiest and most inconsistent work to date. Did he really cast an evil Bob volley ball as the primary antagonist!? And had a garden-gloved cockney defeat him while airhead James watched with a blank look on his face!? The Diane sex scene??? I don’t even know where to begin with this series. Perhaps the best strategy is to watch carefully edited parts and pieces like the critics who sucked Lynch’s **** for this garbage.
Tough pill to swallow and even harder to digest this finale. Mr. Lynch certainly does not believe in happy endings, and if he gave us a lot of what we wanted in Ep. 17, the last chapter soon brought the surreal reality shock.
But, as bad as it hurts, I see his point. Contrary to the fantasies of Hollywood and comic book heroes, evil will not be conquered by a single person, not even by a team of good cops - and as soon as Cooper woke up he was making a monstrous blunder, asking for a copy of him to fill the gap left by Dougie. Wasn’t the “original” Mr. Jones a product of Mr. C in order to escape returning to the Black Lodge? How could the ever so ethical Dale repeat such a dodgy procedure, also ignoring that real mourning and grief would always be preferable to “manufactured” fake happiness?
Audrey once told Coop: “Want to know what you problem is? You’re perfect.” Well, now we know he certainly isn’t, and from the moment he and Diane crossed over to God knows where, the man already seemed someone else, resembling more Mr. C in the sex scene and, what’s more baffling, ignoring that fresh corpse in Carrie Page’s place.
To revert time and undo unwanted things was another childish fantasy shattered to pieces. Of course, a Harry Potter style time-turner could never work out in 'Twin Peaks', except to make things worse. I am taking some hints at face value: Sarah was the girl invaded by the beetle-frog-whatever and inhabited by Mother Judy, the Experiment, who had to wed the man possessed by her child Bob. To this incestuous marriage made in hell, a blonde cutie was sent in a golden orb... but it was always impossible to see Laura as some kind of saviour, only as a scapegoat in the original Biblical sense, ultimately sacrificed for the whole community’s sins.
Maybe the real heroes are those like Norma & Ed, Andy & Lucy, who found true love and remained pure at heart, having no higher ambitions than simple happiness. But everyone is free to dream, and in my dreams Dale and Audrey have always been together, as happily in love as the aforementioned couples, while the Black Lodge exists only in the imagination of Frost & Lynch - and the magic power of Ms. Jennings’ cherry pie saves humanity from the obsession for more and more profit, and everything that goes along with it.
You guys have been great. A vital part of my TP3 viewing experience and enjoyment (the comments section too). Waiting for this seemed longer than waiting for the finale. Great stuff. Thank you!

Does anyone else feel like whenever they "manufacture" a new Dougie or something out of Cooper, it has an impact on the original character? For example, Dougie is in a way all the charming part about Cooper, everyone likes him, he gets crazy for coffee, he is Cooper without all his super detective abilities, even the intuition is there. And then you have the alt dimension Cooper, super smart detective no charm at all (just look how careless he is about his coffee). I even thought we were getting Mr. C in the Diane scene and we were about to see the rape scene, which in some alternative dimension way we did, I mean Diane did ran away from Cooper the same way she did in the original dimension. Just something I thought while watching and haven't seen in other theories.
It was certainly a great ending. I loved every second of it. Even if not everything is understood and some things are unexplained, It's Lynch, it was obvious that some threads would be left unsolved. It was a great trip, full of nostalgia, some fan service, great acting from all the cast and a superb story. It also gave us the best episode of a TV series of all time in my opinion, Part 8, which still gives me chills. I'm really sad that it's over, but I'm also happy, because the two part finale was amazing. I'll go back in some time and rewatch it all at once some day, but I still have to cope with the fact that it's over and have to read more opinions and theories first. Am watching the series years later. Thanks guys for this recap series, entertaining, informative, really enjoyed it!
I may be one of the few here, but although I did like this season, it's definitely one I won't think about watching again for a long time.
I watched another's interpretation on youtube and they mentioned something quite subtle but brilliant. The subtlety is the FBI pin Cooper, as well as all of the other agents, wear on the left side of their chest on their jacket. In Tammy's case on her badass black dress uniform.
Anyways, Throughout the entire season of "The Return", you see Cooper in the red room and in the place with Naido after being expelled by the arm doppleganger, with the FBI pin on his jacket. Once he passes through the outlet thing and comes out as Dougie Jones, the very first scene in the prostitute's house, the pin is gone.
Then the rest of the time you see Dougie/Cooper without the pin on his jacket, UNTIL, the very last episode. Right after the large superimposed Cooper face and the room going dark and Cooper calls out for Gordon and he calls back, you see Gordon, Coop and Diane walking through the boiler room at the great northern. It's here, as they are walking through the boiler room, the pin on Cooper's jacket returns.
The return or absence of the pin let's the viewer know wether the scene(s) is real world time, or dream time. No pin = dream state, Pin = Real. So, the whole season up until the last episode was a dream. Cooper was the dreamer. That's according to the interpreter I watched on youtube.
I'm rewatching all of the episodes to see if this pin thing is true. Trying to take notice when it goes away off his jacket and when it reappears. So far, the interpreter is correct. I just finished rewatching part 4 and that is when Cooper arrives in the burbs, and sure enough, the pin is gone. We shall see how things unfold as I re-watch this amazing beautiful piece of work, as all Lynch's work should be handled.
The generally overlooked Becky / Steven storyline is one of the keys to interpreting how the reality and dreams morph in Twin Peaks.
Becky and Steven are both junkies. Their story runs to an abrupt sad end when Steven kills jealous Becky who has come after him and his lover Gersten with a gun. After killing Becky, Steven and Gersten run to the forest where Steven kills himself with Becky's gun.
But wait ... Becky is dead?? Gersten insists to suicidal Steven that "it" was "her fault". In another scene, we have Carl Rodd having a foreboding glance at their quiet trailer. No word on Becky being dead.
And then we have two utterly different scenes. We have Bobby reuniting with Shelley and Becky in the Double R Diner, as if everything was alright. But slowly the scene unravels to a nightmare. Shelley gets up and runs outside to make out with Red, in front of her daughter and ex husband. Then there is shooting on the street, and a woman pulls her horn endlessly. Bobby goes to have a look and finds a deformed zombie child throwing up next to her.
I another scene Becky is calling Shelley, like a good daughter sharing her worries with her mother, and is persuaded to come to the Diner to have some pie with her.
Both these scenes are dreams, the first by Bobby and the other by Shelley, both dreaming about Becky who has died but still lives in their dreams.
Love this theory. Also, the scenes with "glitches" - being as incoherent with reality as dreams are (plus, no one's questioning it, as you never do in dreams) - might give a clue about what's "real" and what's dreams too.
Camilla Lyse Thanks! The glitches are quite likely related to dreams, or indicate readiness to have a dream when the reality is becoming too much and people want it to go away.
Remember how Ed has his reflection in the window glitching when he eats soup at night, totally alone and miserable?
Then the next day everything turns on its head. Nadine gladly gives him his freedom, persuaded by a golden shovel, and Norma quits her business, dumps her boyfriend and runs to Ed's arms. Lynch leaves it to that - see it as a happy end or as Ed's dream.
Aki Kolehmainen that ALSO explains why there's never a scene showing becky leaving the apartment building where steven and the other woman were at. I think that's probably where and when she was killed so there must have been another altercation that wasn't shown where becky came down the stairs and found them and steven ended up killing her. there was also that scene where the dispatcher at the sheriffs station was receiving multiple calls from one address, it must have been the apartment building and it's occupants reporting that. because why would so many people be reporting becky shooting through a door? even if so- the scene with the dispatcher wouldn't have held much relevance and probably wouldn't have been included.
Something to take not of... (not going into too much detail as others on youtube have done so already) When the giant tell's Cooper the initial riddle in the 1st scene (2 birds etc...) Coop does not have his FBI pin on. He does however have it on when inside the black lodge in parts 1 and 2, and subsequently in part 3 up until he enters the plug socked/Transporter when inside the floating tin space in the mauv zone. He does not have the pin on after emerging in place of Dougie in the Twin Peaks reality. He infact has no pin for the remainder of the season up until Part 17, when the lights suddenly dim and both Cooper and Gordon shout eachothers names in the Sherrifs station, the next scene has Cooper accompanied by Diane and Gordon wearing his FBI pin, and continues to wear it for the remainder of the season. Some believe that much like the ring in Mulholland Drive, the Pin being worn represents Cooper being awake, and the absence of the pin representing Coop when in a subconscious dream state... Hope people find this interesting and investigate further... DAMN FINE THEORY, and HOT!!!!!!

My theory: (1) The ONLY way to defeat Judy was through Laura. It was established in episode 8, and that may be the reason for Laura's demise in the first run of the series; (2) When Cooper intervenes and stops Laura from meeting Leo and Jacques, Judy reacts by abducting Laura and hiding her in the other dimension; (3) Richard and Linda were a way for Cooper to enter the "final dimension" where Laura was. It was devised beforehand by Cooper and the Giant, as if they knew what Judy would do somehow; (4) Cooper entered a dimension and to get to the "final dimension" he has sex with Diane (this was somehow required, I still don't think of a reason why; (5) As soon as Cooper wakes up, he is now Richard, so deceiving Judy and entering this final dimension; and he is now in Texas; (6) He uses his intuition or instructions by the Giant to find Laura, but she was convinced that she is not Laura, and so not able to fulfill her destiny to destroy Judy; (7) "The horse is the white of the eye" is like a premonition of the woodsmen and is reflected in the horse in the mantel (it may mean that the girl that swallows the moth is Sarah Palmer; (8) Cooper takes Laura home, which is the same but slightly different; (9) Judy put the descendants of the old lady somehow in charge of the Palmer house, and Cooper gets confused, almost outsmarted by Judy; (10) At last, Laura remembers, screams, and in remembering fulfills her destiny and destroys Judy, which is represented by the electrical sounds and the darkness that follows, ending the final dimension. That's it, what do you think? =)
Jorge Alberto Araujo, I strongly suspect that Lynch has masterfully misdirected what Judy was.
It seems to me that Judy was the "stone" in the Fireman's plan to get two birds with one stone.
Season 3 started with THREE Coopers. One was in the Black Lodge. His doppelganger was loose in the world. And then there was one more Cooper in the White Lodge. This Cooper was a copy of agent Dale Cooper that had been created by a broken timeline when Phillip Jeffries visited Gordon Cole's office eight days before Laura Palmer's murder. Ever since then he had been in the White Lodge.
The "birds" of the plan were the Cooper in the Black Lodge and his doppelganger. The purpose was to get the former to the White Lodge and the latter back to the Black Lodge. That done, the Cooper in the White Lodge could retire.
The birds were too eager to know what Judy was. This eagerness was used to manipulate them to their planned fates. There probably was no Judy in the sense that they thought there might be.

This is my favorite 18 hours of television in a long time. A two hour film is a treat, taking years to work on, so to have 18 episodes to digest and analyze is amazing. Can not wait for the bluray and special features, and of course to watch again.
Lynch’s art is something that I just can not look away from. While I appreciate that they kept some of the campiness and soap opera style of the original series, ultimately it’s the mind fuck that we are here for. This did not disappoint. I’m surprised by people that are disappointed. Have you not seen Lynch’s films?
Is another season needed? I took away that Coop is no longer part of reality. He realizes at the end that in changing one detail of the past, has completely altered all future events and he is in a world that he cannot recognize. Is there any point to trying again? Is Bob really dead? Is Bob the only evil? Are there others?
With the knowledge of the ending in hand, I think another viewing is in order. Will have to sit with this for a while first, and let things stew. Maybe start from the beginning, and go through it all over. Sitting through James and Nadine side stories does not interest me at this time.
I totally teared up at the end of this recap. You guys did an amazing job and really enhanced the Twin Peaks experience for me!

The finale sealed the debate on whether or not Frost & Lynch are supporters of the Death of the Author or at least their own unique variation of its general ideas, and the answer is that they are. Most fans know that the killer was never meant to be solved in the first place, but I haven't often seen them question why. It's not that there is a singular answer that needs to be solved through in-depth investigation (though investigation is not unwelcome of course) of the content, but that it inspires the imagination through its ambiguity, cultivating an infinite amount of completely different and often contradictory theories that result in new ideas to be fished out by the viewers for their own ends. The ultimate goal of this ambiguity is to bring the broadest range of varying artistic perspectives to the surface as possible, not a consensus agreement as to what happened, how, and why. Frost & Lynch are anti-consensus, and this finale proved it.
Compare the two scenes where Laura whispers something the audience does not hear to Cooper in the original series to the one in Season 3. In the original series, what she whispers is revealed the second(?) time we see it, but only because ABC forced it to revealed. In Season 3, the second(?) time we see her whisper it, after the perplexing and thought-provoking final scene, it's close-up, over the credits, and still silent. It's as if to emphasize that this silence you receive is the true heart of the mystery, not the exchange itself that you want to know so badly. This is how these two reclaimed what they lost the first time and did it without sacrificing what made the first time so compelling. Bravo.

Yeah. I sort of love the meta aspect of Twin Peaks dying as a show because it lost it's ambiguous nature, so in the finale we go back in time to re-engineer the Laura Palmer mystery to be a NEW, DIFFERENT ambiguous mystery that still involves Laura Palmer. "I am dead, yet I live!"
See I agree that ending should have been left with unanswered questions. However I was disappointed because this didn't feel like an actual ending, even of they ended at part 17 there would be less answered questions. We all could have guessed that the time lime reset or that Laura still died. The plot never comes to end it just keeps going and goin- never mind that's all you get.
And I wasn't expecting it but was hoping to some resolution to at least Audrey. But so many things just were never even talked about past the scene that had them. Sarah Palmer, the girl and the mom in the car, the drug subplot, audrey and I probably missed somethings.All pointless plot threads that are never explored or elaborated on. It feels like there was alot of fluff there and really makes Twin peaks hard to defend in my opinion. That's why I have to say the original Twin peaks is better. David lynch created this project for the main stream not his usual audience, and he did a great job of making a memorable T.V show. But overall for the audience lynch was producing a show for ABC needed to step in. Because for all the soap opera garbage in season 2, it rewarded people who trying to make sense of everything.
The Return feels like it's giving anyone who spent time theorizing the middle finger. Oh so you want to find out what happened to this major character that we devote time into showing you well F you. It all comes back to Chekhov's gun if you are going to devote time to show a gun on the wall then someone must use it.
Twin peaks the return is a good T.V show but it isn't twin peaks. Because as much as Lynch wants to forget his original creation he can't, that is the identity that he created for twin peaks. Whether he likes it or not, and twin peaks the return if a true revival would have followed that identity abit closer. Not to a tee but in the same ballpark, because other then some plot elements from the original this has no relationship whatsoever.
TheSonic Ravn Brilliant, and spot on in my opinion also. Lynch and Frost would have struggled to get the budget for a new original series (Although I really wish they had) But hitchin' the wagon on to Twin Peaks and all the baggage that went with it was a mistake... big mistake! I have even heard that Showtime wanted to split the third series into two being 9 episodes in each, and also the big Lynch strop of 'I Am not doing it unless I have 100% creative control' Not to mention money also! He made a cause for defending the right to have the 'older' women from the show be full cast members when it was said that Showtime wanted sexy new blood to match the original and 'Sex it up a bit' another blind ally excuse, who did we get Amanda Seyfried who probably had less than 10 mins screen time in 18 episodes and only to never be seen again or have a plot that never told the viewer what had happened to her! Freddie Sykes with his hulk hand! I mean WTF a jumbled mess of crap...That's all I can say! It's a 'Lets Parody Twin Peaks as much as we can'
Make an over the top statement of the state of Television these days but include Lynch's greatest hits while Mark Frost must of got bored started writing books as some attempt to steer the season 3 hoax from truly hitting the rocks.
At best, It's a walk around a gallery with some great 'moving pictures'

NO just not a Twin Peaks the return season 3 fan. If It was not for the name this would not of even made it to television and at best a much lower budget cinema release.
James Angel I still enjoyed season 3 on it's own but when put in the context of 1 and 2 it's terrible. Twin peaks 3 wasn't twin peaks, and I think alot of people are being blinded with nostalgia goggles.
The first time I watched the original was right before the return, and I fell in love. I get lynch is weird but come on twin peaks was mostly normal with the weird bits mixed in to keep it fresh and interesting. Whenever something crazy happend it was a big deal. But here it's just as werid but with none of the cooldown period. So every scene is that could be really good is just "oh well ok whatever" The return gave us too much of good thing.

I love how Part 18 has such a different look from the previous 17 parts. Liked that about the town segment of Part 8, but it's even more noticeable in Part 18.

wow. amazing job guys, just amazing. i stopped trying to "figure out" what happened in Twin Peaks since that Nuclear Bomb episode and the Greasy Black Figures... so this is great. They will be teaching grad courses on this series for years to come...
