For a subaru engine in particular (and most others) where power is limited by det they are a must have as it is impossible to rely on the knock control safety within the ecu. On some cars this does not react even when I can audibly hear detonation. It is like relying on a driving instructor to do the braking for you... Just a bit too risky.
hi duncan, if you've got a set going i'll be at santa pod this weekend dialing my JDM in. was going to make a set before if i had the chance so this would be ideal. i've got the tuner nerd knock detection but not really getting on with it. and i don't like entirely relying on feedback knock on romraider. would prefer to confirm with ear.
I would never rely on the knock detection from the ecu unless it is a properly set up syvecs ecu. On some cars the std ecu will happily sit doing nothing while the engine is grenadine itself to pieces 😱 I will pick a winner this week but I will have my set at santa pod regardless if you want to hook up 👍
Hey man, great video. I have made a set in the past but never got around to using them because I dont know what i am supposed to listen for. What does pre det and detonation sound like through these? Im afraid to start advancing timing because i dont know what to listen for.
Thanks. Detonation is a very distinctive click when it is just starting ranging up to a very violent crack on huge det. Once you get used to the normal ticking away of the injectors as revs increase it is easy to hear this sound. I will try at some point and do a video of it but it is dangerous so don't want to inflict it on purpose tbh 🤣
@@racedynamix is there a tutorial video on where to put the probe or how to use them? I know you say to bolt it on the intake manifold, do you do this on every cylinder?
Great bit of kit. Would be nice to have it with a dyno 😅 unfortunately, don’t really have an access to one. In addition, do you supply kit that allow you to connect to Alcatek ecu & do small tweaks yourself? As in the cable & dongle. I know there is a video coming up about tuning your own subaru. So I’m slowly trying to gather all the pieces together to be able to do some basic adjustments myself. Thanks!
Hi. It is not possible to get hold of the dongle and leads now from Alcatek unfortunately.. They have stopped doing them. Mapping academy videos will be coming along with live q and a sessions etc.. 👍
Top draw old school💪👌 but question is do you actually use these or do you use electronic ones now? I have asked this question so many times and everyone says electronic like phormula nobody seems to use the stethoscope type anymore.
Always old school. They are far more sensitive and real sound not synthetic. Plus I can hear air leaks and other things too with them that electronic det detection devices can only dream of.
Plus.. I was sat with another tuner recently with him using electronic device and me with my old school and not only could I hear det he couldn't but I could also hear pre det.. Much easier to keep the engine safe imo 👍
@RaceDynamix Subaru Tuning then my friend you have converted me have been looking into det cans and was pushed towards the phormula set but I shall give these ago and see what I can hear 👍 also saves big money. Defo a worthwhile video and thankyou 👌
@@kyletait91 I have used them for many years.. The copper pipe gets worn and cut shorter over time but super cheap and imo way better than converting a noise to a signal then back to a noise again... Things always get lost in translation. Thanks for watching 🙏
@@racedynamix I think it's important for people who aren't in the know to learn what it's all about and that adding major mods without mapping them in that causes pre det. Subaru reliability isn't the best as a generalization. I don't think they are as bad as people make out. Poor mapping/unmapped mods Low oil/starvation/ human error makes up a lot of the reputation I believe
@@benc911 interesting points. I totally agree. The winner of the Det Cans is Sam Porter 👍
Love seeing notifications pop up for your channel! Keep up the good work 💪
Thomas.. That is so nice of you to say. Thank you 🙏
DIY with Duncan - brilliant 😀 0.25 - 'What you'll need . . . ' is a big green cup of tea.
Essential 😎😊
It was great to see them in action on the red scoob blobeye at whifbits Duncan.👍
Old school ftw 😊🙏
Great video as always. Keep em coming. All the best.
Thanks so much mate 🙏
Learned something new. Never heard of any of this before. I must not have been tuned properly😂.

Brilliant Duncan, I need a set if you are getting rid? Happy to get in touch with you.
Thanks Dan. I will pick a winner at random soon 👍

regards from brasil!! can you show where i put this on the engine?
Ola bom dia.
I usually bolt to the inlet manifold where the bracket to hold the intercooler is 👍

Hi. Under the back of the bonnet (hood in the US) and into passenger window..put that down a little and all is good 👍
great video, Always look forward to you videos. i am going to make a set. Where are the common places to attach the copper end to ?
Thank you 🙏 Best a d easiest place to fit them is the intercooler mounting points on the inlet manifold 👍

@@spectr3origin931 nope.. anywhere on the inlet manifold is good 👍
