If youre looking at the engine from behind, to the right of the oil filter there is a plug that looks like a drain plug. I pulled that out and a bit of oil came out along with when I took the filter out. I only figured out why my engine was running so poorly when I saw your video. I had never completely emptied it correctly so I was running with something like 5L of oil. The standard amount is 3.2-3.8L. I just wanted to say thanks for the video. This engine is on one of my first builds ever and you can definitely tell that I'm still learning.

You are wrong about the path of the oil flow through the filter. Read the Kawasaki kz650b shop manual. The oil flows from the oil pump directly to the outside peripheral pleats of the filter through to the filter bolt and then directly to the main bearings, camshafts and transmission etc...

You're also supposed to replace the oil if it's been sitting for a long time. Even if it is "clean." I don't know the technical reasons behind it. That's why some people do the whole 3000 miles or 3 months thing.

But it really does look clean.

I just got an 80 kz650 ltd (yesterday) and didn’t realize until watching your video tonight that there was the glass sight to see your levels. When I opened the oil cap at the top to see if how the oil was I thought there was little to none so I looked up how much should go in it went and got oil and dropped 3 quarts in the bike and ran it for a little bit.
Now I realize I have way too much.
Should I bite eat the cost of the oil just purchased and do a full oil change or should I just try to drain some out until it’s at the correct reading?

Out of curiosity, what was the mileage when you had to re ring? I’ve got a ‘79 that was given to me, runs, sat for several years, I’m sure the carbs need gone through. But I am get significant oil burning at idle and light revving.
    Great walk through! Thanks!

It got rebuilt because I bent some exhaust valves. I decided to do a refresh since I had it apart.

Jets? Dynojet. Call or email them your setup and they'll send the mains and needles you need along with setup instructions.

Great looking bike buddy! What kind of paint did you use on your cylinder block. In the process of rebuild and polished the covers like you.

I used a high temp spray paint you'll find at any auto part store.

Hey YBG, how does your petcock run? I have been having trouble with mine. Do you have the RES PRI ON with diaphragm?
Nice video. Will try this for the first time on saturday.

This is an old style petcock. I found the vacuum operated one that was from the factory to be unreliable. It has on, off ,and reserve.
