    The UAE / SA shouldn't be on this list. Those workers will NEVER be granted citizenship - they're basically slaves - not immigrants.

    • @TheDailyConversation
      @TheDailyConversation  9 ปีที่แล้ว +208

      dothedeed That's a fair point, although most of them came there voluntarily to work , unlike the slaves who were captured and brought across the Atlantic to America. Still, it's a problem worth highlighting and I appreciate you doing so. This link has more information bit.ly/1enDI6B

      Kristina S. No they don't because they didn't check the definition of "immigrant".
      Immigration is the movement of people into a country to which they are not native in order to settle there, especially as permanent residents or future citizens.
      If there's no path to citizenship for them or their children (even when born in the country) then they shouldn't be included.

      dothedeed Then go tell that to the UN.

      Kristina S. Im telling YOU - you brought them up. The stats are there - anyone (including the maker of this video) can compile an alternative list using the correct definition. But, its easier to go to wikipedia and just copy.

    I'm French and I was born in Paris. I moved to the UK with my family at the age of 17 and stayed there for more than 15 years. I've been living in Romania for the last 3 years. My parents and my younger brother still live in the UK but my older brother now lives in Berlin, Germany.
    My mother is Japanese and moved to France in May 1968 to study at La Sorbonne university just days before the start of the famous student uprising that would change the face of French society.
    My father was born in Paris but his father was born in Algeria, a French colony at the time. His mother, my dad's grandmother, was Italian from Sicily. She fled the poverty of her country in the early 20th century to find opportunities in French Algeria. There she married my dad's grandfather who was from Alsace. That's why my grandfather was born in Algeria, a pied-noir, meaning a person of European descent born in Algeria.
    My Alsatian family can be traced back to Switzerland. We found that out when we built the genealogical tree of the family. One on my Swiss direct ancestors was a Swiss guard (those funnily dress guards of the Vatican) in Paris, at the service of Louis XIV, the Sun King.
    Yes, like most Europeans, the immigration story of my family is complicated.

I love how conservatives quote the trillions of dollars, but never tell you which hole they pull that from. our immigrants from the commonwealth are no problem, there is no way to get rid of them and some are extremely successful. The future of immigration is not in the commonwealth however, it is from Europe. Britain literally has no control over who can come in from Europe.

    • @devoyinator
      @devoyinator 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Frank Megarry Immigrants from the EU contributed more than non-EU immigration.

    • @Twiggy163
      @Twiggy163 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Frank Megarry You guys are still going on about that? The UK does NOT have open borders and it's not participating in the Schengen agreement. The UK and Ireland are the only EU members that have been given an opt-out for this otherwise mandatory part of the EU. To get into the UK you need a passport/EU member state ID card and a good reason and this goes for EU citizens traveling to the UK just the same. Don't look at the EU when your own government fails at this.

    • @Twiggy163
      @Twiggy163 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Yakov Easy now. Even though much of the UKIP arguements have no basis and can be easily disputed, they do make a few good points: the EU is hopelessly complicated which results in people being elected which many EU citizens have never heard of. The EU also occupies itself with rather strange laws: the maximum amount of power a vaccuum cleaner is allowed to use? During an economic recession I think there are more pressing issues.

      GeoffHowerman Pilar I can talk about India, it's a bit complex though, education is very cheap here and people are smart. Hindus want education and move out of India as they feel it's cool to move abroad, while Muslims deny education as they feel it's against religion and they stay back in Indua and try to increase it's population so that they could increase their numbers. Christians have already moved out of the country thanks to welcoming west. Remaining also dream of getting a job somewhere and leaving the country. Its more or less the same story in entire South Asia.

      Dubb RS is very weak compares with? The highest growth of all the countries in Europe. I have been in Seattle last year . And several times in diferents parts of USA. The downtown was full of homeless. The same in the main cities of the states. We were scared all the time and we felt unsafe almost always. In some places and at some periods of the day you can't walk quite because someone can shout you by a gun. For me this is not strong economy. Strong economy is an economy that can provide to all the citizens a free and universal Heath system, where if you are unemployed you have a minimum protection salary, a country with public and free schools, with strong social services . A Country is measured also with the life expectance and in this index , The Spanish one is much higher than the USA an UK. Look at the human development index of Spain and compares with the other developed countries. You will surprise a lot. Of course we have big problems as other coutries in region have but in global terms we have managed the crisis much better than expected. And yes!! 3.2% growth every year in the 12th world's biggest economy in a country with only 45 millions habitants IS a lot!!

    • @DubbRS
      @DubbRS 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    My family's immigration story: My dad was born in Esfahan Iran in 1969, and lived there till 1987. The revolution happened, and my family was poor before it. But then, war with Iraq broke out, and in 1982, his eldest brother was 17 and had been drafted to fight against the invading Iraqis. He survived the war and came back in 1984, but his foot was severely injured, so he needed a cane, and PTSD hit him. One year later, his other brother (Allah yarhama) was drafted. He was KIA. His parents decided they'd never let their sons get hurt in the war ever again, so they sent him and his younger two brothers to Oman the day he turned 18 in 1986 (his brothers were 16 and 14). They lived in the capital muscat for a little while, and got an education. They all went into electrical engineering, but there wasn't much in terms of quality education in Oman at the time, so their skills were limited, and since there weren't many good jobs in Oman at the time, they worked as electricians. They lived comfortably, but not too well. In 1993, a big opportunity arised in Bahrain, with a big pay rise for my dad.They'd still be electricians, but they'd receive better pay at the company that offered them jobs. They promptly packed up and moved to Bahrain. My dad met my mom in 1995. My mom was born in Iraq in 1974 to a wealthy shia half persian half Arab family in Basra. It quickly became clear that Saddam was growing anti shia, so they picked up and moved to Bahrain in 1979, when the revolution happened and right before war broke out. They lived there pretty comfortably, my grandparents both worked in construction management, and made a decent living off of it. My mom went into analytics and lived well in Bahrain. When she met my dad, she basically "dated" him for a year and a half, but my dad's side looked at their relationship with a lot of suspicion, but they ended up getting married at the end of 1996. In 1998, my dad discovered a job that in Toronto that paid far better than any previous job he had, and had the opportunity to complete his education. He finally completed his education in 1999, and I was born a few months later in Toronto, Canada.

    I see the US as the country with the most opportunities since you don't have to commit to a certain way of life to live and prosper. Here you can be white, black, tall, short, brown eyed, jewish, Catholic, Communist or what ever. If you want to succeed you will make it and become who you want to be. Many other countries in the world simply have immigrants because they have jobs available but the US has Freedom, which in turn translates into opportunities. Many young Europeans and Chinese whom I have met come to the states to study and after spending sometime here they really want to stay, but immigration law is a nightmare here. I was born in a communist country and the best thing for me is not simply to have a job or see that my city is looking beautiful, but to feel that I am free to roam the city without the fear of being harassed by the police, or to go for a walk at night without the fear of being kidnapped, or work however many hours my employer decides to allow me, or to open my own business without having to bribe 20 government employees sitting in a government office playing their nails and listening to the local radio station while talking to the next employee about last nights soap opera.

    Speaking about Germany... If we take immigrants from Russia and Kazakhstan, they are mostly ethnic germans. There are some resons for that. Russian Empire used to have good relationships with Germany, and since the governing of Katharina II there were a lot of germans living and working on the territory of Russian Empire, but right after the beginning of 1st and 2nd WW most of germans were exiled and deported by communists far away from german borders to the countries like Kazakhstan and some other '-Stans'. And after the collaps of USSR the descedants of those germans have been trying to get back to their historical motherland. Just want you to know...

It's strong economy and open culture encouraged the largest migration intake. You are creating flawed causation. Also look at the 2 most powerful economy in the world, China. it's migrant population is nominal. Look at the 3rd, Japan....the same. Look at all raising economies, India, Korea, Brazil...

Also China is not one ethnic groups, it is hundreds that make up one country, gathering influence over the centuries. Brazil is also very diverse with HIGH amounts of immigration. Even Korea is doing well because it welcomes foreign business, though immigrants are a decent size of the population (including Korean Americans) at 10%.

    My family's immigration story? Alright, so my family was born in Cuba. At one point, Fidel Castro announced that if you wanted to flee Cuba, then get out because we don't want you here if you don't want to be here. So my family took that a chance. They attempted to flee once before but the cops got them and sent the leader of my family's escape group (my grandfather) to jail for 2 years. So after my grandfather was released, they took the chance like I said. They got the raft they've been having for a while and went to the ocean in the morning to start begin their escape. Keep in mind, the escape group was exactly 20 people. Yes, 20 people in one raft. So this time the cops didn't stop them because obviously because Castro allowed them to. So a few hours pass by, they're in the middle of the ocean on their way to Florida. Sadly, the motor stopped working, and the raft was slowly sinking. My family had already accepted their fate if they tried to flee.

    • @Cuban
      @Cuban 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      They knew there was a really high chance of them dying in the process. But during that time, they took any chance they could so they can have a better life. So the raft is slowly sinking, my family are all just on the raft, some were silent and remembering all their memories, and some were crying if I'm not mistaken. They were going to die... Until suddenly, a HUGE cargo ship owned by the Seaworld company, turned its lights on and lighted up the entire dark ocean including my family's raft! My family said that it seemed as if it were daytime because of how huge and shiny the ship's lights were! As you can probably tell, my family was so happy, words can't describe it. So the cargo ship dropped down a stair made of rope material, and each member got on and climbed onto the ship. Seaworld was so nice to them. They were supposed to take my family back to a prison Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, but they chose to take them to the US.

    • @Cuban
      @Cuban 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      +Cuban After they arrived to the US, they spent 2-3 months in Krome Detention Center (jail for illegal immigrants). My family said they were happy to be in there lol. So yeah, after they were released they started their life here in Florida and so on. I hope whoever read this story enjoyed it. I always tell it to people every now and then because I find it very interesting. PS, my family is so thankful for Seaworld, they always say that if it weren't for them, they would not be here. Dead if they would've never found them in the first place. Happy holidays everyone!

      the original post refers to geographical size (the space you have to place immigrants), not to the population size, so netherlandic is right. The US is geograpically 27 times larger (if you subtract uninhabitable regions it will still be 15-20 times probably). If you want to use both population and geographical space, you could use population density (us = 33/km2, gemany = 232/km2) theoretically (not taking into account habitable area) the US could take in a lot more immigrants than gemany nearly 7 times more based on density, 27 times more based on space and 4 times more based on population size (which this video says is the case).

    If you wondered why such a small country like Greece has so many immigrants in other countries, heres why:
    Most people left after WW2 and the Greek Civil War which occured right after WW2 ended. Obviously, Greece was more than exhausted after two consecutive massive wars, so many Greeks left to Germany, Australia and the USA. Many Greeks also left in the next decades because of political instability and especially during the dictatorship from 1967 to 1974. A new wave of immigration has recently started because of the financial crisis and its severe consequences...

However while they get more money in the US they are treated like dirt and constantly hiding from Police and Immigration officers.

      ***** That is an incorrect way of thinking, Mexico was not the first to own that land, land goes through many country's hands over the years, from the Natives to the Spanish, to the Mexicans, to the Americans. And unless you were born in that nation it is not your land, just because my ancestors came from Germany to the US does not give me the right to make claims over Germany and call it my homeland, if i was born in Phoenix for example than Arizona is my native land and I would have the right to live there, I would be a little upset if the Mexicans came in there acting like they were entitled to the place just because their country used to have claims on paper.

      KonPlayz I wonder, why nobody corrected this after a year. No, there are not 850k Turks in Austria. Even currently, there are 15,8% Immigrants, including non-citizens. (1,374,600, 1,3 million in total numbers)
      There are currently 8,7 million People in Austria. Use simple logic and maths. If there were 850k Turks, they would make up to 9,7% of the population, making Turks the largest immigrant group, which they OFFICIALLY ARE NOT.
      If you speak german, you can read on this article on the offical government website, that in fact Germans are the largest group of immigrants, followed by serbs and they are all included in the offical numbers of the government.
      Even the Refugees are included.
      In the 2017 report of "Die Presse", the biggest Refugee group from Syria made (including the kurds and other minorities) up to 0,4% of the population. 34800 People.

      @DragoLazarevic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      valentin Chab there are many things that create culture, 1000 years ago there were chants, paintings, local traditions and now we have cars, the internet that has change our ways drastically, youtube gave us an opportunity to see lots of very interesting videos (yeah, it's not all about cats). most pop songs that are on top lists are american. all great inventions change our live thus they are carving our culture. only because todays countries are so open to each other doesn't mean there is no more culture. from wikipedia "Culture is, in the words of E.B. Tylor, that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society." - and today's society is a society of technology. btw I said that he's using electricity created by american jerk named edison (tesla wasn't american but he created the ac motor in america so still on my point) not that his house is powered by american company. and no, I'm not american.

      Religion is a strictly personal thing. If it affects anyone other than yourself - it's dangerous.
      So leaving religion is not necessary. If a person is eager on pushing their religion into other's throats, then I guess yes, but in that case they would probably want to push anything they believe in onto others, not just religion - in which case, a lot of things would have to leave, perhaps the whole person themselves.

    Why is Puerto Rico number 5 on the USA immigrant list, Puerto Rico is apart of the USA.

    • @user-vf3cb7vk8z
      @user-vf3cb7vk8z 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it isn't, but they might be eventually. I feel like they really don't deserve statehood unfortunately, their country is more of a drain. The Philippines are more likely to become a state in my opinion.

    • @michaeladelstine2516
      @michaeladelstine2516 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Lol. Puerto Ricans are AMERICANS by birth. They ARE NOT immigrants. even the island itself is just a territory not a state, the people are Americans just like any American in the 50 states. Philippines is not in any way part of America. They could never become a state. Huge difference between Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

    • @user-vf3cb7vk8z
      @user-vf3cb7vk8z 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Adelstine Actually there is a possibility that the Philippines could become a state, along with other English speaking countries such as Canada, New Zealand, Britain, and Australia. It would at least be the smart thing to do, it would end their stagnant economies and attach them to the dynamic American economy allowing for more productivity. It's not like they would lost their values, they would just be under a more organized and efficient system. There is a reason America has the smallest percent of the population in the world that is involved in agriculture yet they produce the most agricultural products in the world and actually farmers have to be paid by the US to stop producing so they don't overflow the market making the products worthless. In the end I don't really care it won't effect me since I already live in the US but it would be better for the citizens of those countries.

      the video (2015) is based on stats. that date from before 2015, so I can assume that the economy of Spain may concern the period of the government of Zapatero, during this period the Spanish economy had a big BOOM (before 2009) because it came out of the dictatorship of Franco and she had entered the European single market earlier. Growth was at the rendezvous.
      Moreover Spain is one of the countries with one of the biggest GDP because it is a country develloped with many sources of income.

    Born in Italy, moved to Turkmenistan, snuck across the border to Kazakhstan, then Russia, trekking through the Siberian winter, and taking a rowboat to japan, where I would ride a yacht to South Korea, then, on my biggest adventure... sail to the Canadian shores, where I would stay for ten long years until, finally, I would swim to Cuba, (impossible, I don’t care.) then be off to buy some ice cream and a biplane to go to Chile, but crashing on the beach of Brazil, barely surviving. Then I would repair my biplane with a broken arm, and fly to Australia, where I would then crawl to Alice springs, where I would slowly, but surely, die.

    I Iive in Germany and from my point of view we could use even more immigrants but they should be able to work here. They should speak the language and then it's absolutely no problem to live here. We need good craftsman and caregivers without end. For me people from different cultures are enrichment and not a threat. I don't even care about their religion or cultural background and so. Don't know why people scared because of their culture and so. Everything changes and the culture too. But I live in north Germany and here we think a little different like the people from south and especially from east Germany.

    • @stevenliang3213
      @stevenliang3213 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard that the German language is VERY difficult to learn due to the high irregularities. Yes, even more difficult than English.
      I do like your viewpoint about how culture is not stagnant. It's always changing and we should embrace it, not challenge it. Plus with low birth rates in all of Europe, immigrants are needed to fuel the labor force.

    • @anneneville6255
      @anneneville6255 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      because all of the immigrants are without education and want to work as e.g. nurses with 1000€ a month? Most of the young people immigrating to Germany or France etc., have a degree and want to find stable work in their field and earn more money.

    • @rcm926
      @rcm926 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lin Bin, I think you've got it the wrong way around - English has a lot more irregularities than German, and German is a very well structured language in comparison. German writing is also pronounced phonetically, so unlike in English you know how to pronounce 99% of the words you read without being taught it or guessing. There are also a lot more compound words, which are easier to learn. The list goes on.

      I always wanted to visit Germany, although now they having issues with the excess amount of migrants. Germany is certainly a great place to live without a doubt. Many people like to point out the negatives and be harsh critics but compared to most of the world even in European Countries Germany is among the best economically. Nowhere is perfect but it is fact that developed countries like Germany, US, Canada, and UK people from very economically poor or financially corrupt countries will have a better opportunity to get a better life for themselves there then their original homelands. I do agree though that people should be able to assimilate to the culture, language, and meet educational standards to be able to be productive members of society in the country they move too.
