Just to get from one side of Ontario to the other is 24 hours of driving. To put this in perspective for our American friends, google maps tells me it is 40 hours from New York City to San Diego, California. From Niagara Falls to Miami, Florida is 21 hours.

There’s a serious historical mistake in this video: Canadians didn’t rise up against colonial rule. (French) Canadians did in part because democracy was being stifled, but ESPECIALLY because of the British regime’s forceful assimilation policies and unequal treatment of (French) Canadians so we wanted autonomy and auto-détermination. The mistake comes from terminology: at the time the word Canadian only refers to those of French descent, while those of English descent were referred to as British. In later historical periods, the term Canadians referred to french AND english descendants, with those of French descent identifying directly as French Canadian. In the mid twentieth century in Québec, French Canadians formed a distinct identity and started referring to themselves as Québécois!

Under the British Monarchy it was mainly the french speaking people of Québec ''Les Patriotes'' that fought the British in 1837, it was not the Canadians. Long before the British presence the people borned in New France were called ''Canadien'' today Québécois. Today still a misused appellation. I used to know a lot of monarchists but they are getting pretty scarce. Heck I refused to swear allegiance to the Queen in 1979 when I went into the army and compounded it when I wouldn't use God in my statement, caught a lot of crap but they gave up pretty quickly and I swore allegiance to the nation of Canada. They simply pretended I had done it their way. I found it terribly funny but haven't changed my views 46 years later and I only served for 5 years (to be honest I was a lousy soldier). Quebec and one of the Territories have dumped them completely but other than the politicians, Mounties and the Forces, I don't know where it would be used. I never ran into it again. Canadians cannot hold British titles and retain their citizenship, you can ask Conrad Black about that. It is ceremonial only at this point, although Harper did attempt to link us a lot more closely (e.g. changed our armed forces uniforms and ranks to mirror the British). They sought a trade deal with us after Brexit but were essentially rebuffed in favor of the EU. I likely won't live to see it but I doubt the English monarchy will survive the century.
It's how Canada's government is set up is why we still recognize Britain so much. We would need something like a 75% vote by all provinces and territories, unanimous or it doesn't happen to rid all British influence. Its almost an impossibility, and it was deliberately legislated that way, way back in the days of Canada's infancy.
