- Rule 11 is one of football's shortest rule, but also one if its most misunderstood.
In the early days of the sport, it became common for players players to "goal hang" - where players would just hang around their opponents goal and wait for a long ball to pick up an easy 1v1 against the keeper. This wasn't very entertaining, nor athletic, so the rule was first introduced in 1863.

Its basically means u cant just kick the ball over the whole field to a guy just chilling infront of the goal. Scoring on a goal is easy, even with a goalkeeper, if there is no defender to put you under pressure. With the offside rule you have to always actually pass one defender to get a clear shot at the goal.
Thank you for illustrating that rule. Now I know even more reasons why Soccer/Football is even more convoluted :D
very good explanation, did not cover 100% of the cases but very informative for amateurs.
Question: if the ball has been kicked so that it will land behind their defenders, can I race the last defender and be momentarily offside while the ball is midair (still behind me), making me onside once it lands? Or do I need to wait until the ball touches the ground, defining the new onside zone, and THEN race the last defender?
The rule is applied at the moment the ball is kicked, so it is irrelevant where the attacker (you in this case) is when the ball is on air. Simply put, you must be in an onside position when the ball is last touched. So for example, your teammate kicks a long and high ball forward as you were in an onside position at the time they kicked it - you have every right to run onto the ball behind the defense as the ball is in the air because you were onside the last time the ball was actually touched.

You forgot to mention one very important detail -- the offside can happen only at the moment of the pass, and not at the moment of receiving the pass. It means that if you stay behind the 2nd last defender and your teammate makes the pass ahead of you both and then you run ahead of the 2nd last defender and receive the ball, the offside won't be called even though you will find yourself catching the ball in front of the 2nd last defender. You won't be penalized for the offside because at the moment of the pass you were located behind the defender.

@@LifeOnPaul also a common misconception is that the goalkeeper may be in front of a defender and the goalkeeper becomes the second to last PLAYER as he counts as a player too. Many people who know football from a long time have trouble with this rule when its a live game, trust me.

They also forgot to mention that receiving the ball in an offsides position is not necessarily offsides. You’re only offsides if you were offsides when the ball was kicked to you.

This is not actually the referees job. There are 2 linesmen, one for each side, running up and down with the play. Its their job to spot offside.

I really don’t like this rule, it feels like you’re being punished for having a faster break, better positioning, and planning. I feel like if this rule wasn’t in the game there would be more goals thus making the game more exciting to watch and would pave the way for more big explosive team plays.

It's not a stupid rule, because it prevents people from goal hanging.
Well it was around 10 years since I was trying to understand this, finally cleared.
One key element that will make it easier for people to understand offside, is that it is there to prevent any attacking player from camping (or literally just standing still) next to the opposing goalkeeper or the goalposts, just waiting for the ball to be lobbed to him (the attacking player).
