Hi Heather, Don't apologize for the length of the video. Having you beside me guiding me through taking a book apart and then spiral binding it is great!!
I have coil-bound literally dozens of books using this technique. Yours is the only one I have found so far that shows how to cut a glue-bound spine off a book and turn it into a coil-bound book. I usually divide my pages down to stacks of about 10-15 pages and use a straight-edge and a utility knife to cut the glue binding off. It makes it a little faster. I appreciate this video so much!! Thank you!! 💕
Just ordered my binder! I had planned on taking all my teacher guide books (homeschool mom here) to our local UPS store, but since the world is currently in chaos I was looking into how to do it on my own and found myself here. Thanks for sharing such a detailed video! Great job!
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the binding guide is for SHEETS not pages. So, if your book is printed on both sides as most published books are, a 124-page book would actually be 62 sheets.
As of December 2022 we checked and Office Max nor Staples provided the spiral binding service anymore, at least in the Nashville area. so good to know alternatives
This is a great video! I know that I don't do enough books with a spiral but I did do all of my canning books when Staples had a special promotion for less than 2.00 a book. It was a wonderful thing. I have also tabbed out my cooking and canning books with colorful tabs from Walmart. It save you from thumbing through your books. I do this by chapters. I starting tabbing books when I was in college. 'Since I have doing Cyber school with my granddaughter, I have tabbed some of her chapter books. It keeps her from being overwhelmed by the number a pages to novels, Thanks again for sharing. Peace and blessings.
This was so helpful. Thank you. I started homeschooling my daughter and haven’t touched my spiraling machine because it intimidated me. lol. Feel much better now that I’ve seen this. 🥰
I am a demonstrator with stampin up which teaches card-making and scrapbooking etcetera with rubber and photopolymer stamps. Every year I would take my catalog to OfficeMax and have the covers laminated and have it spiral-bound. I don't have a need for the machine but I wanted to tell you about a product because I cut a lot of cardstock. I started out with a trimmer like you're using, but was constantly buying new blades for it, and that got old very quickly. I'm putting the link in here to a guillotine cutter that has self sharpening blades. Tonic makes this and Tim Holtz has branded it now. I got mine many years ago when stampin Up was partnered with them so they branded it with the stampin up logo. You may find it another place where it's a little more price but less shipping if you're interested in it you can kind of look around just Google the Tim Holtz 12-inch guillotine cutter. But you'll never need to buy another blade and it really doesn't take up any more room than what you're using it's just thicker than the Fiskars. It has a detachable arm that stores under the trimmer which just snaps into place. This allows you to measure from the left side of your document since we're the guillotine you can't measure to the right like you're doing with the Fiskars you're using the hash marks on the right side of the cut line. But it's easy peasy to measure from the left it's just a matter of getting used to it. I get you may not be interested in it but with cutting all the laminating in the coated paper if you're going through a lot of blades to get a clean cut you may want to look into a guillotine. Plus I can cut three pieces of heavyweight cardstock at one time with it so for just coated paper from a book you could probably cut five or six pages cleanly at a time www.craftstash.us/checkout/cart/
Hi, Heather, Here's a tip I watched the clerks at Staples did to my spiral projects: They have a fingernail clipper that they use for the corners of the laminated covers. Otherwise, those sharp little puppies can catch ya and do a big Ouch! I love getting my books done with spirals! : )
you know, i have a corner clipper for scrapbooking but it does NOT like laminated pages and always gets stck. why have I never thought about clippers? you are a genius! hahahaha
Heather, I just got back from picking up my Instant Pot Bible and my USDA home Canning book from Office Depot getting them spiralized. i appreciated seeing this and determining if this is something I want to do too. Spiral books are so much better when you need a book laid out FLAT. Thank you so much for doing this combination tutorial (and product review)
Thank you for the tutorial! I watched the same videos you did on my quest for knowledge to learn how to modify a glue bound book to a spiral bound book. The only recommendation I would add wold be to us a hair drier or heat gun to melt the glue without having to use a knife to cut the pages.
I have this same binder machine and I, too, find this type 'stuff' to be fun. I'd actually not thought of doing my soft bound cookbooks (i use the equipment more for hobby and craft purposes). Thanks so much for the excellent and detailed tutorial. Diane
Hi Heather, what a great idea to put spirals on books that you use frequently, especially cookbooks or canning. It is a game changer, so convenient and less anxiety to hold the pages in place or accidentally losing the page. Wow what a beautiful machine Heather. It was fun learning how you do it. Great
FYI with the laminator: we used to make placemats with the child’s current picture, favorite color, recent picture they draw, hand print, and a little message. They loved it! Just thought I would share.
This was a great tutorial, even though I wouldn't be using this, it would be very easy to follow your steps and have a successfully bound book the first time. You have worked all the kinks out for everyone. Thanks for sharing this, you are a very good teacher. Have a Blessed day. As an after thought,...it would be nice if all recipe books, or instructional books were bound like this to begin with. Sometimes it is just so difficult to prop one open to follow the directions.
@@TheKneadyHomesteader I just ordered the laminator based on your recommendation and seeing how easily in works. Thanks for the reference I appreciate it.
Even though i will not be using this proceedure ever, i must say it has been very educational to watch. Your step by step teaching should benefit those who will. Very informative and very well put together teaching video. Two humbs up Heather. 🙂
Great!! Now I have to go buy new toys to play with! lol I LOVE this idea, Heather! I go through so much annoying, and yes, phone putting, BOOK putting, on the pages to keep them open! lol. . This is a MUCH better idea! You always have such great idea's for saving time, AND money, and I SO SO SO appreciate you!
I wish I could have done like 5 LIKES! I just bought this exact same TruBind Coil Binding Machine. Glad I found your video to give me an instructional video and how to separate a book so I can bind books. Thanks so much!
I worked in printing most of my life. It's important you buy the right type of coil for your machine. If the pitch is off no matter how hard you try you will not be able to get the coil on.
I really enjoy these videos, of you showing how you make planner inserts and dashboards or how you make your own recipe books and bind them!! It would be awesome if you made this a series!!
Lisa, you will LOVE this! It has been a game changer for homeschool. I was able to download Levels 1-5 for Language Arts from the good and the beautiful......I plan on just rinting them out and spiral binding them myself to use. Saving me so much money!
@@TheKneadyHomesteader That's exactly what I want to do! We are also using the same curriculum this year and it has been a blessing to our family to be able to print it off for free. I just want to spiral bound it for the kids, to make it a little extra special. 😆
Thanks; I wondered how to remove the glue spine. We’re also a homeschooling family and I am tempted by that laminating machine. Thanks again for this video.
Yes!!!!! You could put all of the best family recipes together and create a book for every family member. Wouldnt that be a cool Christmas gift or Family Reunion gift to give?
Exactly. Mom is in her 70's (don't tell her I told you that) :D A recipe book for everyone with the family favorites would be amazing. The covers would be pretty easy to design and could be printed on a cardstock with actual pictures of the family favorites on them... then laminated (I have the laminator)... you would have to cut the holes in a single layer for covers but it would keep the covers nice and beefy. Yeah, I can totally picture it. Heck... you could even buy glossy paper and make it look like a for real cookbook. I guess I can picture it pretty clearly. Hahaha
OH MY GOSH!! That is such a GREAT idea!! My daughters are always calling me for one recipe or another that I used to make them when they were kids ! Thank you for that! :)
Oh my goodness. I finally found THE video I needed to wrap my head around what I would need to do this ... and the binder machine is not available! Anyone know if there is an updated version or something similar they would recommend?
Love it, Thanks for sharing. I did notice that some of the lettering on the pages were cut off at the holes. How do you eliminate that. It could be an important measurement that is missing.
Yeah, i think I got a bum book which is why it was on clearance for $1.50. It was close to the glue binding too. I would have to pull back some of the pages to read the words in the crease. 😂 None of my other books have had that issue but there is a margin control on the machine to adjust the hole punches. 😁
Oh you’re so welcome, Lillie! I knew this video wouldn’t be for everybody but for those few like us, who want to see it in action, I was hoping would be helpful in some way. I scoured youtube land and wished there were more videos on it! 😂👍🏻
Great idea for those greatly used cookbooks. I would try to figure out how to preserve the words on the binding edge. What would you suggest or was this book just too big?
I think I got a misprint magazine because some of the pages were lost even in its original state. I think thats why it was marked down to $1.50 when I bought it. 😂😊
This is wonderful. I have the same cutter, only I need a new blade, can you tell me where to get one? I also have the same eliminator. I love them both. Thank you for sharing.
Great video and wonderful job of explaining how to do this but Grandma here just doesn't have the patience for this , wish I did. Love your video's and little Mina's pretty little voice in the back ground . Thanks and bless you all , Linda
hahaha this is definitely NOT for everyone! My husband does not understand how this is fun for me. hahaha He bought it for me for Christmas from the kids.....and I have been playing with it every day since!
The Kneady Homesteader I used one when I was secretary at the bank. Loved doing the reports every week. I’ve bought everything to do my cookbook but the machine. This year is the year!!
You did a totally wonderful job explaining how it works. When you first showed your cook books I was really considering getting one. I have to admit though now I'm a little disappointed in the product. From what i see it's just a hole punch for $172. What I need to do is see if my wires will circle around the holes that my comb binder ($62) makes. I'm hoping the holes will match up and it will be a little cheaper,. The end result of a coiled book IS awesome though. To be able to lay a book flat and not struggle with pages avoids a lot of frustration. Well done.
I didnt show the electric coil inserter, just in case someone bought a machine that didnt have one I wanted to show it is easy to do it by hand, just takes longer. I did pay extra for that feature which is nice because I don't have to sit there and spiral the coils by hand. The machine does it for you for any coil size under a 24mm I believe. So the BIG 400+ page books need to be done by hand still. This was the most inexpensive machine I could find that offered the oval punch. Anything less expensive than this model were all round hole. The oval hole is sooooo nice! It makes flipping through pages much easier than the round holes. With all of the books I have bound so far, the machine already paid for itself, had I taken in all my books and had them done by Office Max or some place similar. I don't like the comb binds, and they don't last long from the research I did. I was able to download for free Levels 1-5 for Language Arts from The Good and The beautiful. Thats 5 years worth of free curriculum. I plan on printing it all out and coiling it myself saving me hundreds of dollars. :D I also have downloaded a few PDF books, printed them and coiled them so I can read them instead of reading them on my phone. hahahaha
@@TheKneadyHomesteader you need to make another video. Lol your getting me on board. I quickly looked at the link and they were hand coiling too. If it coils, it would help with the hand and be worth it.
@@TheKneadyHomesteader I like the comb binder for daycare. Your right in that the binding does not last as long, but for childrens project its a good cheaper process that gets the job done and parents are happy. Now something like cookbooks and planners, something you want to keep long term or gets used a lot coil would be better
hahaha one better, here is a video that shows it, so you dont have to wait! if you noticed by the end of this video, my knuckles started getting red. I ended up not doing the 2nd book last night. But, when I use the auto coil inserter, its so much easier on my hands! Altho, you still use your hands quite a bit for the whole process. Here is the link, Sweet Mama! xoxoxo th-cam.com/video/vwc4so5AAeM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=LaminationDepot
You need a proper guillotine type paper trimmer, they're fairly cheap on Amazon, it'll save you a ton of time. In other news, the wayward squash seeds turned up in my mailbox yesterday, where should I send them this time around?
Hello! How often do you need to change the blade/cutter on your Fiskars Trimmer? I really need a trimmer like that but I'm unsure of a decent brand to get. Yours looks like it cuts really well. Thanks for the video!
You know, it depends but honestly they last a good long while. I also use it a lot on laminated sheets, which will dull it a bit faster than plain paper but i have had mine over 3 years and i am on my 4th blade of that helps any!
@@TheKneadyHomesteader doing better. I may be getting sinus. I hope not I already went threw that last month. Geez had my pneumonia and flue shots several months ago. I was hoping to avoid any colds🤣 This is my Last week of Heart Physical Therapy then I am on my own. Your so Sweet* Thank You💕

Here is the link, Sweet Mama! xoxoxo

yeah, i totally see where a comb binder would be perfect for all of your littles!
I have a binder machine but it does the plastic binder, are you saying I can punch the holes and hand bind with a coil?
This video is wildly memorizing for me 😂
I need to bind so many things!!
Thanks Heather!
You need a proper guillotine type paper trimmer, they're fairly cheap on Amazon, it'll save you a ton of time. In other news, the wayward squash seeds turned up in my mailbox yesterday, where should I send them this time around?
Noooooo! 😫😞 I was hoping they would just forward it. Are you on fb at all? Or have an enail addy? I will email you my addy. ❤️
I loved this video!!!!
I appreciate it.
Good job.
That's So neat
How Cool* is That👍🤗💕
How are you feelin, Mama????❤️❤️❤️ I think and pray for you often.
@@TheKneadyHomesteader doing better. I may be getting sinus. I hope not I already went threw that last month. Geez had my pneumonia and flue shots several months ago. I was hoping to avoid any colds🤣
