  • I'm making a bound book, and you'll see me have a crafty fail with a simple measure to fix it while using the We R Makers Thermal Cinch Binding Machine.
    I couldn't add the photo where We R Makers addressed the books not laying flat. To read it, please see: jmbushnell.com/2024/02/10/unb...

    You can use glue strips that you find on Amazon for future use. I have not used any of the ones I list here, but these are examples of what you will need to search for. Thermal glue strips or book binding glue strips are good search terms.
    *Examples:

    and you can even purchase presentation covers that make things a little easier or professional, depending on your use:

    I also saw the UK launch, and agree their presentation was much more thorough and detailed. As you and others have said, this is not new technology, so unless the We R Makers device is actually defective, it should definitely work. You did a great job of patiently exploring and trouble shooting this item.This is another example of a previously existing technology being redesigned and repackaged to appeal to the craft market. Honestly, I wasn't really aware of that until I started to poke around online and look for information. I do feel a little annoyed by the lack of transparency. It makes me feel exploited. But HSN offered it at a good price, and I don't regret the purchase. I have also found that binding strips of different widths are widely available on Amazon and other retailers for better prices, although not mounted on the cute binding spines that We R sells. Generally speaking, I have often been struck by how inadequate We R Makers' instructional videos are. Many of us rely on content creators like you to fill in the gaps. Thanks for doing such a good job.

      Thank you! Exactly-- this is a pretty model of an item that has existed for a long time. I can't yet speak to the lifespan or quality of their glue strips, but I was super impressed in my old Avery machine. The glue strips on the presentation binder that came with it are old and still viable and work great. I didn't have any issues making that out of the gate. I will say, on the spines from We R Makers, their glue strips are indented a bit and do not run edge to edge. I can see that this creates a space for misalignment and potential "catching" of the materials to assist in their potentially being pulled out. I agree that they do not spend enough time on their instructions. I enjoy their products, but I always find myself hunting for help on how to use them. Thank you so much for watching!

    Sadly, I have found and continue to find We R Memory Keepers/Makers extremely lacking in sharing useful and important information on their products and how to use said products. If it weren’t for creators like yourself sharing your experiences, the rest of us would probably be left in the dark.
    I have a Cinch binding machine that uses wires and believe I will stick with it for now. Despite it being simple to operate, it took awhile to figure it out but only because of TH-cam creators sharing what they know . I know my wire bound notebooks and journals will hold up over the long haul. I see lots of room for error and ruined projects with the thermal cinch. Plus, I am not convinced the thermal cinch bound books will hold up but then again I am not convinced any thermal glued books will either in the long run.
    Again, thanks again for sharing and educating me on the thermal cinch.

      I'm glad you found value in it! Thank you! Yes, I have to agree!! I wish they would create a "how -to" library of videos for their many products. Their site links to YT, but it isn't the in-depth type of videos most users crave, and frankly, need. They do many videos showing the "ta-da" factor, but the actual instructional part is sparse to none. The packaging is never very helpful. Forcing people to watch HSN for some information, email or chat with them for other info, and watch creator videos for clearer instruction or experience... it creates customer frustration, for sure!

    Stack your papers on the back side with the cover strip still on the tape and pull the cover strip off the front side and wrap it over, then turn the book over and remove the second cover strip. Does that make sense? Or add your first and last pages on the spine with the adhesive then add you other pages in. I hope that makes sense.

    When I take mine out I use my bone folder to rub the spine and press the glue down to the bottom edges. I find that helps. It's not perfect but I like the ease of use.

    Jeannie, I have enjoyed your video this morning, as I have been watching to see if someone has been patient enough to figure it out. I did not purchase the Cinch, since I have the original machine the, “Your Story”, which was made by provocraft, the original cricut machine. When American craft bought out many of the craft brands like We R, they have made them the division that they use to reintroduce older, former products. Since I am that crafter that has been the one to buy the newest gadget, I have many of them, some never opened. However I had the YOUR STORY, AND DID USE IT. I looked around my craft room to find some of the books I made over 10 years ago. They are still bound and still look well. It takes time to learn how to bound your books properly and what works for you I also I found the old Avery binding machine on a clearance heap at the office supply store before I bought my first, your story later, I bought your story I found the glue strips could have been wider so that I could’ve bound bigger books, so I was surprised to see that the strips are the same as the original. Looking at TH-cam videos of people who also had the story they suggested, putting hot glue along with the strip. I also suggest your tampering method should be to tamper onto the glue strip before you put your adhesive on the sides, because the side adhesive is not allowing your pages to move. Good luck. I look forward to watching your journey and hopefully you come up with some beautiful books to memorialize your families life.

      Thank you for watching! I've had to look up the "Your Story" machine, as I didn't remember it. That is great that you are able to still use yours and your finished pieces are holding up to time! Yes, it does take a minute to get acquainted with our new tools. These aren't new tools in the industry, by far, and they do work. We just need to find out how they work for each of us and the goals we have for them. Those aren't always in alignment. lol :) I'm excited to do more and appreciate your experience and feedback!

    You are absolutely correct about the UK demo on Hobby Maker - the lady there had all sorts of good info that We R Makers didn’t mention at all. They showed on the slightly wider spines to use another glue strip instead of just one.

    • @JeannieMBushnell
      @JeannieMBushnell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes!!! She sure did! Did you check out the airing of it today on HSN during their Craft Stream? Totally different demo! They showed the need to tamp it down before and after inserting into the machine! I'm so glad they finally did that, as it is essential to a good binding. Perhaps we are making an impact here with our feedback! Thank you for watching!

    I told another creator the other day if you score the paper towards the spine maybe a 1/4 inch or a little more and the binder piece you should be able to lay it flat more or less. I haven’t tried my idea yet but will this weekend. I agree we r makers did a disservice to their customers by not telling the whole truth. Sad!!!

    Hi Jeannie!! I just found you and because of the cinch. I must say I truly truly appreciate you doing this video. Truly!!! I watched the US launch and was a little surprised and not sure about this machine. I watched another person, Lori's DIY (something), and she did NOT have any good luck. I will say I think most of her issues were user mistakes. There's was a lot of user error!! Your video gives me thought that maybe. I would think with those glue strips, you would need to use 2 or 3 side by side if you're making a much wider book. That makes sense to me. Anyway, thank you for sharing!!!
    Lisa

      @JeannieMBushnell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Lisa! :) Thank you for watching! Yes, if you make a larger spine, you'll definitely need additional glue strips of the .25 inch, or purchase non-We R Makers ones that are in different sizes. I needed to use two of them when I created my first binding in the paper bag junk journal video. :) th-cam.com/video/wGMmizBwqw8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jTna_kDF3R8rGo2W

    Has anyone tried to use vinyl on the spines before or after assembly? I have a vision of using the Thermal Cinch to make cookbooks of my recipes for my kids - but each would be like Main Dishes, Desserts, Comfort Foods, etc. and I would like them to be identifiable once bound when sitting on a shelf....or making "year books" with photos/notes from specific years or events.

    • @JeannieMBushnell
      @JeannieMBushnell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After assembly would be great! Whether you use sticky vinyl letters or have a heat transfer type, you could definitely create a really nice theme in your books that is cohesive. What a wonderful gift you want to make for your kids! :)

    I haven’t tried mine yet. Hubby been sick but I wasn’t able to get bookmarks since they had sold out. Can you get ribbon and add adhesive and make your own bookmarks?

    • @JeannieMBushnell
      @JeannieMBushnell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ribbon they use is just plain .25" or 7 mm wide ribbon. There is nothing coated on the ribbon or anything like that. If you want to use the ribbon as a bookmark itself, just line it up within your pages as though it were another sheet of paper (as the edge of the ribbon will adhere to the glue as the edges of the pages do). I just made two shorts for you to help with sizing. You certainly can make your own! I certainly hope your husband feels better! :)

      I have to wonder if part of the problem could be the glue on the strips that come with the machine. It seems very thin compared to what came with my ancient machine. Straight out of the gate, I had no problems making my first one on that machine. I'll be testing different glue strips to compare. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
