My food forest Pembina plum just gave me 8.5 lbs of ripe plums. They are the ones that fell off in my hands. There is at least 5 times more yet to harvest.
Had to be careful not to step on the potato plants. The rhubarb leaves made a soft spot for my bare feet to land. Got a little scraped up from the black currant bush. (so many currants I let the neighbours pick them off)
Almost tripped over the poppies and dill.
      God is good.

Well James and Tuck, I was about to give up since it was my first time trying to grow a garden. I watched your other video about not giving up and kept going. Today I harvested 5 cucumbers a cantaloupe and 8 green beans. I have beefsteak and cherry tomatoes and about 5 pumpkins trying to make it. I'm proud of myself. Next year will be even better! ❤

In my experience growing gardens, I think it's important to think of mistakes/failures as learning opportunities. And if the garden is being grown as a hobby rather than for survival, remember to enjoy the process of growing the garden even if it doesn't grow as well as hoped. Best of luck to you for the rest of this growing season and next :)

YES! Good to read, each year gets better and better with experience 👍. In my first year, I grew tiny, neglected squashes and small amounts of neglected cherry toms 😅. But nowadays, I have a bunch of beefsteak toms, jalapeños, cayenne peppers, cilantro, squash, and pumpkin going! It only gets better dude!

Be sure to keep a journal as to what works and what doesn't, or what might need to be tweaked a bit. Also, write down things you want to try, seed varieties you like. Where you might want to put some flowers to attract more pollinators. Good luck, glad you kept going.

Gardening is such a learning process. I have been doing most of my adult life. I try to grow something new and different each year. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but that's gardening. My cousin bought her first house so she calls to ask a ton of questions. I encouraged her to start small and it will grow as her knowledge grows. Not to go crazy and get overwhelmed and plant so much it's hard to keep up especially if it's your first. You want to enjoy your time in the garden. As soon as it becomes a chore you'll do less and less. And you'll rob yourself of the satisfaction looking at all you've grown and sharing with friends and family know "I grew that" 🫛🫑🌽🥦🍑😊

When you said never give up... that hit hard. This year was very hard. We had so much rain, and such a bad summer. My whole garden has been wiped out with blight, the tomatoes, peppers... everything. Early on this year the slugs, now the blight. I really wanted to give up, cause when you see everything just demolished either by slugs or disease, it's really hard to keep going. But next year I will come back stronger and trying something else. Thank you for making these videos and inspiring a lot of us! ❤

I know what you mean. Besides the weather, I had trouble with birds, cats, squirrels, rabbits, deer, and some mystery animal that left large feces in the garden. I planted cantaloupe and watermelons three or four times and each time it got eaten even though I tried adding a makeshift netting. I've never had so much trouble with animals eating my garden before (I'm in a somewhat tightly packed suburb)--the deer even ate the tops off my jalepeño pants... I did manage to get wonderful mustard greens, very late snap peas, tomatoes, and raspberries though.

This year I tried winter sowing my tomatoes. Had such a good batch...and the first planting got eaten up by rabbits and deer. I had to wait till like June before they would stop eating my plants whole. In the meantime I did drop by Walmart to pick up some plants, but the deer decided to top them for me 🤦‍♀️. And then we got a random beaver wandering around the zucchini. Still don't know if it ate my first batch or if it was the bunnies. I've learned that I probably shouldn't plant my tomatoes too early

What a great idea! I think that eventually we’re all going to have to give up our regular lawns. Even though we have free water from a well, we never installed sprinklers or sod. I’m growing all native grass and mostly native plants, plus the vegetable gardens. It takes a while for things to look good but it’s ultimately cheaper & easier. We save $$$ just by not needing a lawn care company- and all the chemicals! I mow my native lawn about 3 times each summer.

Again my girls and i have learned alot! Our fave part is when you sit down at the end for a chat. My four year old has her own birdies garden bed and she planted a huge range of veggies, herbs and flowers and cucumbers even brasicas and kohl rabi , beans etc really just tighter than the square foot method and everything has been growing really well! The pests are confused and the bees are happy and she even then went and planted raddishes and lettuce under all that so it was under the shade of other plants and are protected.. this is all thanks to you boys and watching you push the boundaries and trust in nature sometimes. Now we are off to harvest some tuckie beans! ❤❤❤❤ For Tuckie and James!

I'm so envious. I love to see this. It is proof that rows of moncropped produce is superfluous. I hear arguments that it can't work on large scale. That is good, I think. What if we broke up huge corporate, or corporate pushed, monocropped areas into many smaller plots that incorporated these principles, along with some wilded spaces? Maybe people could rent the lands and get the same corporate subsidies to help folks learn and develop the areas.
I am only allowed a small 4x4 space. I keep trying to impress some ideas on management.

I think long term it would provide more output as the land would be self feeding in many ways and not have to have the petroleum based fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and compaction to deal with. Yeah there will be issues and challenges but like mollison and Lawton say, the solutions lie in the problems. I think it would be positive for humans as well who work it and lease or lease to own ( like corporations would allow that) as their personal health can't help but become better.

We grow haskaps and strawberries at the feet of some dwarf apple and plum trees, and by the time the berries are done being picked the melons are ready to sprawl that area. All we do is allow the leaf litter to overwinter on the beds (maple trees = loads of leaves) and by spring they are so dry they basically disintegrate on their own, so we just blend them back into the ground. Then we add a good forest mulch on top, and throw in some chicken manure to jumpstart the strawberries. The plants all seem to grow and produce fine year after year, and have done so for the past 6 years.

I have joined the food forest themed yard. I live in a town house and maximized my growing space in my yard every year. Love your channel. You are a blessing to all who know what it means to grow your own food. It’s a life skill. Thank you for your content. My dad as I have told you in previous posts was like this and we still 3 years after he has passed have a food Oasis on my parents property.

I also love your explanation and perfect example of a permaculture. Your explanation of beneficial connections really struck a cord for me too. It doesn’t just apply to gardening, but the workplace and life in general. It explains our interconnections, just like the connections of the roots of trees and plants, in a forest. Anyway, it’s what differentiates a healthy environment from a toxic one.

Never intended to have a food forest myself. But... that first cherry tree led to birthday blueberry bushes. I think I'm getting birthday raspberries and blackberries this year. Next year I want a dwarf banana tree. So...looks like I'm gonna have a bit of a food forest. I'm loving every minute of it.

💚 Beautiful, multi-level Food Forest! One thing you rarely mention, is what you DO with all that abundance? Do you freeze, freeze-dry, can, sell to a restaurant, give away, do a CSA, donate to food bank? 💚

@jamesprigioni how in the world do you provide water for everything you are growing?! We are in north Louisiana where the temperatures are in the 100+. Absolutely no rain in sight especially in July and August. It is SUPER dry here. Having to water some crops daily. ❤❤❤’s for both you and Tuck! Love your channel!!!

He's in NJ so water is significantly less of a concern for him than for you. I'm in nearby PA and we did have some really dry periods but I don't think it compares to what you probably experience. Plus he has great soil with tons of organic matter and he uses mulch.
