    Great energy, great story! Definitely agree, many people would say they enjoy the convenience of zooms and multiple lenses, but once you tried pushing yourself with just one lens you see yourself getting better. I used to be a 50mm guy back in my FF days, now switched to mirrorless apsc and been dabbling with the 35mm equivalent focal length. Love it!

      I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It's such fun pushing yourself with a prime lens isn't it? I'm having a 50mm moment currently, it's been glued to my camera this month. I like mixing it up, shooting with one lens for a while then moving to a different one, I always see such improvements to my photography overall when I concentrate like this. Enjoy your mirrorless!

    "One camera, one lens" is a great philosophy. I'd love to see Canon make digital Canonet. Something like the Fujifilm X100V or Leica Q2. Great Canon hardware and software in a compact form. Yes, Canon makes some excellent point-and-shoot cameras but they're all very modern looking and all the high-end ones have zoom lens.
    I spent a couple of years working as a freelance photojournalism in Southeast Asia and while I had two excellent bodies and a bag full of the best primes and zooms most of my images were captured on a Fujifilm X100T with a fixed 23mm (35mm) lens. Having "one camera, one lens" was always quicker and more discrete than using a more traditional mirrorless camera.

    i do alot of wildlife as a hobbyist smudger, so my goto lens has to be the 100-400mm , i have taken it out on its own a few times but i do usually put a 9mm in the bag too for any wide stuff

    • @helenbartlett
      @helenbartlett 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a place in my heart for the 100-400, for me it's usually if I'm on the beach and the kids are likely to be going deep into the water or if I'm photographing them doing a sport like horse-riding or waterskiing. It's a great lens and I can see why it would be your lens of choice for wildlife.

    Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing! I only have one camera lol (80D, which I still love), but I definitely like leaving one lens on to see what I can create. I’ve done a couple outdoor portrait shots with the 135 F2 L (might still be my favourite lens)...on APS-C! Yes I’m backing up quite a bit to get shots, but the results are beautiful. And it doubles as one of my indoor hockey lens (along with the 70-200 2.8 IS III). In fact, I’ve left the 135 on for entire tournaments sometimes. By the way, the first prime I tried was the 50 1.8 STM...and for the price, this is a great option for someone to try a prime.

    • @helenbartlett
      @helenbartlett 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the 50 1.8 too, it's always the lens I recommend to friends and clients who want to improve their photography. The 135 is glorious too, I find it's a bit too far away for me (I love to chat while I work) but it's a beautiful lens and good at the moment too with social distancing :-)

    Working as a professional during the 1970s/1980s, I can't recall having to agonise over, which lens or lenses to take on any particular job. Most of my work was either industrial, weddings or architectural. For the latter I relied chiefly on my Hasselblad SWC with its unmatched Biogen optic and an elderly Rolliflex. Weddings were very easy to plan: Hassel with 70mm and standard zeiss lens, plus a minolta with a 50mm f1.2 rokkor - A great portrait lens from f2. O but useless at f1. 2. In addition, my fiddly Leica M3 for colour work, using the superb Summichron( Canada version) 35mm f1. 4. The real weight and bulk of my equipment case was due to my brace of Metz flashes and a spare Courtney battery pack.

    Good idea - really learn one lens! Another thing to work on would be to shoot a lot less frames. A lot less. Think, compose then shoot. Don't chimp, know whether you have it or not. I used to share a darkroom with a photographer (social, wedding, classical music etc) who would not use an image she could not print full frame - discipline. Get it right in camera. Back in the 50s and 60s when the press boys were on Rollei TLRs they would look to cover 3 or 4 jobs in a day on 1 roll of 120 - so 3 or 4 shots per job. The picture editors didn't like to wade through loads of contact sheets - if you couldn't get it done on one roll, the second was unlikely to get seen. Fixed lenses there too! Just one focal length.

    • @helenbartlett
      @helenbartlett 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are so many different ways we can push ourselves aren't there. I love setting these little challenges and seeing what the results would be. I'm not sure I'd only want four shots per job though, that must have been so incredibly hard to do, they certainly knew their stuff.
