The shock absorbers here are actually coilovers which have a coil spring on the outside and a shock absorber on the inside. Leaf springs are flexible metal banded together and can flex and move on a set of hinges for articulation. Without coilovers the shock absorbers would have been mounted independently of the springs regardless of whether it had coil springs or leaf springs

You would still need a sway bar to prevent your car from rolling on the highway, and that would destroy the only advantage you named.
It's mainly meant for off-road vehicles.
