    Apparently some of you want me to watch through the rest of Promising Young Woman despite me clearly not enjoying it at all.
    EDIT: Just finished it and my rating didn't change. What a surprise.

      His experience is no different than a critic walking out of a movie they could not stand. I thought Promising Young Woman was not that bad. I don’t think it deserves the nomination cause its a movie that doesn’t explore the character deeply. Pieces of a Woman should have gotten the nomination.

      I came here to give you a hard time about that, but I'm glad you finished the movie. I disagree with your evaluation of it, but at least I can't accuse you of not giving it proper consideration. 7/10 movie to me. Liked it a lot, but saw it more as a decent contender in an otherwise weak year.

      To be fair I know what's it's like to hear a piece of score/music in a film/game that sounds identical or familiar to another film/game, it can be incredibly distracting. (For instance there was a piece of music at the beginning of Minari that sounded almost exactly like the OST of ''I saw the devil'' and it completely took my focus away from the movie for a minute) In this case of course Adum wasn't aware of where that piece of music originated from.

    About I'm Thinking of Ending Things not getting any nominations: My theory is that the Oscars probably shadowbanned Charlie Kaufman from the ceremony after 2016 because he (rightfully) called them "phony" and "self-congratulatory." He clearly doesn't like the show, and the Academy clearly doesn't take his movies seriously enough.

    I wouldn't say that Nomadland's plot went nowhere, just that it was an extremely internalized plot that had very little exposition. The entire plot was playing out in Frances McDormund's head, as she went back and forth with herself about how long she could keep living in a van and what any of it really meant to her. She kept facing new challenges, difficulties and temptations to settle down, but time and time she returned to van, more resolved than ever to live the life of a nomad.
    There might have been some missed opportunities with how certain side characters developed, but I think overall the film did an excellent job of reinforcing its themes and portraying Frances' character's journey as one of personal actualization, with occasional, fleeting connections with other nomads along the path. Developing any of them too much would defeat the whole point.

Because the fact she works at Amazon for like 7 minutes of the movie is irrelevant as it could have been literally any low paying retail giant in the USA, the point is to establish that she is in here 60 yaer old women working for a labor-intensive job with home or family , and to establish how nomads make money. Aaron Sorkin as a writer has always bugged me. On the one hand, the man can write snappy, witty, clever dialogue like nobody else. The man is the closest thing to a writing machine I think I've ever seen. On the other hand, so much of that dialogue inhabits this cheesy idyllic landscape that feels a good few dimensions removed from reality. The West Wing was particularly bad with this. Aaron Sorkin is very much an Old Hollywood-style writer, in that his dialogue is meant to be entertaining more than realistic. And in some cases like with The Social Network, that can be a lot of fun, but at other times, like with the "and then they all clapped" ending of Chicago, it can feel incredibly out of touch.

    • @dragonrings14
      @dragonrings14 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel Aaron Sorkin is arguably the writer working today. The man makes consistently good films and TV shows. I've yet to see Chicago 7 but considering his near flawless record, I think we can allow him one poor choice.

    • @Kira1Lawliet
      @Kira1Lawliet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dragonrings14 I saw Chicago 7, and I think that 95% of it is really great. The only problem is with the final scene, which fits into a running occurrence in Aaron Sorkin's work, which is a need to foist his own moral beliefs onto the logic of his stories. It's one of those sort-of fairy tale-feeling endings which clearly don't reside in any realm of reality, but are more manifestations of the way in which Sorkin himself believes the world should be like. I disagree with YMS about Sacha Baron Cohen, I think he does great in the film, and again, 95% of it is just really really good. It's only that ending that rubs you the wrong way, because it's too much of a feel-good ending to a story that, as I understand it, did not end nearly so well. In other words, it borders on historical revisionism for the sake of moral satisfaction.
      Again, Sorkin is a monster writer, and I don't think any living TV/film writer today can match his consistent quality and output, but he does have a problem with realism in his stories and with letting his emotions overtake his sense of logic.

    • @dragonrings14
      @dragonrings14 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kira1Lawliet Ok I've now seen Chicago 7 and I get what you mean about the ending. It felt more like his earlier work from the 90s (and funnily enough he wrote this film nearly 15 years ago). BUT I wouldn't call it bordering "on historical revisionism for the sake of moral satisfaction". For a start, it's a flim and therefore it isn't trying to be historical. If this was a documentary then you might have a point. Second, a lot of what happens in the film did in fact happen. The order is a little off and some things are said and done by different characters, but for the most part these events did take place. Sure Sorkin makes the characters a little more balanced so they're more relatable. But we have to accept some liberties to be taken when creating a well rounded story.
      To go back to the original point though... I agree wholeheartedly that they didn't need to stand and clap at the end. It probably would have been more powerful just to have him read all the names without the applause.

    I agree that Promising Young Woman is very out of place in the Oscars, as it's more of a genre film than an Oscar film, but I don't really agree with anything else you said. I think the reason it was nominated in the first place was that it was a very politically driven movie, which seems to be a running theme this year. The main purpose of this film was basically a firm rebuttal of the 'not all men' thing that some people say as a response to women being uncomfortable around men after being sexually assaulted. Bo Burnham's character was presented as the honorable nice guy that gets the main character out of her cycle of revenge, but it turns out he was still part of the problem. It may be heavy handed, but I don't think that is always a bad thing. Promising Young Woman has a message to say, and it told that message in a very unambigous way, which I think is commendable in this case.

And yeah, I get that it's pretty on the nose, and harsh, but that is because this is a harsh topic. Also in the theater I watched the movie, judging from some crowd reactions (Theater in Berlin) some people did not get the message of the movie, or put it of as "Feminazi bullshit", which I found worrisome, to say the least, because it ist exactly this behaviour of denial, that is the main focus of the movie.
      TL, DR: Movie good, but Adam did lot like, because movie that is shot like romcom = bad.

      @@jobraket So you think it's perfectly acceptable to have prejudice against an entire group of people because you were wronged once by an individual who's a member of that group? Thanks for exposing yourself, I guess.

      @@jobraket That's the whole message of the film. It's supposed to be a rebuttal to "not all men". So basically it's saying that the main character is justified in her prejudice against men because a man once wronged her...and you agree with message sooo

    I really loved Mank from a technical and writing perspective, but God that fake film grain really knocks it down a few points. I REALLY wish they just filmed it with actual film. Yes I understand with it being made by Fincher it would have been ridiculously expensive but man would it have worth it. Because that Trent Reznor soundtrack was also great. It also has a slow as hell start but I feel the pay off was worth the last leg was great with some of it's best shots and scenes but it could have been so much more.
    Wolfwalkers deserves to walk away with that oscar. So fucking good, and one of my favorite animated films to recently come out.

      Actually this best picture line up is actually quite good compared to previous yaers. I actually think 5/8 are actually some of the best of 2020 and The Father,Judas,Sound Of metal in particular are some the best I’ve seen in a while

    Adum dismissing Promising Young Woman for very shallow reasons is a bigger tragedy than any specific film getting snubbed (half-sarcasm, seriously his criticisms are so poor and the only reason they aren't more illegitimate is that he didn't even watch the full film in it's entirety). Calling it "bland, pandering and un-special" is especially ill-advised and nonsensical.

      Agree that ITOET should have gotten something, though I knew it probably wouldn't have been. Agreed with what he said about Trial of the Chicago 7 and it's cinematography, had some cool looking shots but I don't think it was interesting enough to be nominated.
