I have a 2012 x5 3.0D w 178k miles…and love it. I have some maintenance issues but have found it reasonably easy to diagnose and repair. Items i have replaced are EGR cooler, glow plugs, and alternator. I drive in the snow and live in the fog. Ive never had issues with freezing door handles, rust nor many of the issues outlined in this video. Overall, i love this car.
Been driving X5s for past 14 years. Had a e53 3.0dse had transfer box actuator motor cause problems with car clunking when coming to a stop and glow plug controller faulty. Changed the battery at 10 years old. Changed gearbox oil and filter and transfer box oil at 95000 3 door handle frames changed and normal disc and pads. Oil changed every 10000 miles. Cheapest and most reliable car I have owned. Now have a e70lci 3.0d m sport . Had it for past 5 years. Had a rear suspension air bag go £30 part on eBay and 40 minutes job to replace. Had the crankshaft pulley come off at 111000 cost me 250 in parts as replaced tensioner and pulley and belt at the same time never broken down on me, only issue is tyres, it has the 20 “ staggered, cost about £1100 for a full set. If you service the car regularly it will last if you don’t then expect things to go wrong. I have a mustang mache Ev, but won’t let the x5 go as it’s a good reliable car.
A few issues i've had: rear suspension airbags, parking brake module, angel eye bulbs (non-halogens), uneven tyre wear, rusted camber bolts, damaged plastic headlight covers, rear lights corroding, dpf warning and coils (not allowing it to auto regen). If you're methodical and keep on top of the maintenance it really nice car to live with and have tonnes of space even with the 7 seat option.
We have a 2011 40D m sport x5 that is fully spaced up. We’ve had it for over a year now and it’s never let us down, except for one time when the crank pulley decided it wanted to shat itself on the A1 when we was about 130 miles away from home 😂. Still going strong though for it now being on 158k miles 💪🏻
Oh men what an image you have given of the E70 worse than Bin Laden, I have the same car last series 2013 and I can say it drives better than the X5 2023 and never had any issue at all, this can the only BMW that changing gear, engine oils every 8000 KMS the gear never fails but last forever
Hi, I'm in down underland, Australia. 95% of the X5 imports are diesel powered. I personally have an E53 that often registers as an E70 on the VIN decode due to the build date, which causes many issues when trying to get parts for normal servicing. It does have the M57d 160kw 500nm single turbo engine, couples to a six speed ZF transmission. Recently I had a spate of issues with Turbo power loss and embarrassing performance hits. To complicate matters, it even decided to behave like an SI engine and only run on five cylinders, something that really does put the wind up you, when you have a diesel. At the time I was following the BMW service schedule, even though it was reduced to 10k and it was a few hundred short, but surely that could not cause the problem...🤔 Well, I decided to do a change and bought the oil as I already had a filter on standby. I also decided to use some diesel engine flush before the change. Instructions said to put in and idle for 10 minutes, but we were in the 40c temperatures that week, so I thought, screw that and just put it in straight away, then drove the 13 minutes home. It did not sound as bad but it was still easily identified as a missing cylinder. I left it with the bonnet up and baking in the hot noonday sun. The night temp only dropped to 33c and next day I went out and the block was still hot to touch. I started the old girl up and she ran as smooth as silk, firing on all six once more, but there was a definitive boost leak to fix. I made a start for at least the two cool hours we had, before it hit 38c and that enabled me to get most of the annoying parts out of the way. First visual inspection was a top hose slipped off the clip attachment to the EGR. I had already replaced the hose. That fixed, we tried the car, but boost was ineffective and sound was coming out from lower. Having watched your removal of the Turbo through the top video, I headed down that path, but I soon found we were talking about two different cars. F/M, this sucks...so I kinda floundered around and suddenly the pipe fell out of the turbo. That was strange, I thought...now looking at the inter-cooler joint. All I could see was a greasy mess. SO,plugging all the holes with clean rag I de-greased that area and found that the snap in fitting was not mounted properly. A fight ensued to remove it and the a bigger fight to remove the entire turbo to inter-cooler pipe, however persistence prevailed and I got it out. I had to separate the hose from the alloy pipe, clean and reset the silicone rubber seal into the turbo and then make the mounting system work properly and firmly once more. A new clamp for the hose and set the clip in end to the inter-cooler ensuring it was locked top and bottom, then seal the clamp down. Sounds easy eh! Well, it sucked big time. rotate the clamp to prevent it rubbing on the cooling hose, route the vacuum lines so they do not burn through, as well as the electrical wiring. Do up the screws that I undid trying to remove the part like you did only to find it was different. Buying more tools for a job, because I cannot get the angle I want and still fighting the heat...until it all changed and bloody well rained. FFS...Now I could not work because it was raining cats and dogs.! Three bits to go, weathers good on Sunday, it is now day 10, everything is connected, new oil, battery has been on trickle charge just for safe keeping. Fired up and off for a test drive, got two km away and at a slight hill heard the boost hose blow off and the exhaust not change, but the sweet sound of the turbo whine. A quick turn around and back home, sounds good but gutless as hell. Pulled up and back onto the ramps. One look told me the clamp was useless, no auto shops open today so it can wait till I travel to my physio on Tuesday, use the wifes car. Got the correct clamp, fitted the hose, locked and test drive away. Now, two weeks on, it is like a new car but I wont be doing the EGR removal because of issues with warning lights and remapping. I will remove and clean the EGR properly and prior to the oil change I will use the engine flush. My oil changes are now set to 7500km with a filter every second change. I am using C3 graded oil for diesel which is the best for reducing the particles in the EGR. I am not sure what differences there are in our Diesel motors bu I do know that they are classified as hot pack diesels, or hot kitted, something strange like that. I almost bought the E70 but each one was a 7 seat vehicle and I have no need to be carting 300kg of dead weight around for the off chance. This turbo hose problem and the misfire is the first issue I have had with mine, I would agree, disregard the BMW service intervals and do it more frequently and use a good oil.
Already guessed what would come up before I watched this. You forgot one of the main ones; INJECTORS! (Usually no. 5) usually damaged from rain leaking down the front scuttle panel. Learnt this the hard way when my car use to cut out randomly and put itself into park, so dangerous BMW should have had a recall on this !
thank you so much i just throw out the engine cover because it's BS. it slows heat radiation & prevents smooth ventilation. also it covers leaks & wont let to have a quick check
Very nice car. Love the X5s. The sos warning message is usually it's own battery (similar to old mobile phones) that is dead and needs a new one. Sits either in the trunk or hidden behind roof liner in the back depends on the car. Cheers for the videos.
Mine is a 2009 35d M sport and overall I would say it has been reliable, it has now done 196k miles. Had some issues but those were due to wear and tear due to the age and mileage.
I was looking at buying an e70 X5 last year as I've had many BMW's over the past 25 years but never an X5. I knew about all the usual problems but when I asked my mate who is a mechanic for his opinion his first words were...Volvo XC90 😂 I bought a e91 320d lci m sport instead!
With e70s would also recommend replacing rear upper control arms to deal with excessive wear on the inside edge of the rear tyres (especially the 315s).
Beautiful car. Besides maintenance, here in Holland it's a expensive car to drive daily. The roadtax over here for a 2+ tonnes diesel is going to kill all the fun pretty quick.
I have a 2010 40d LCI. I had the gearbox and transfer case serviced when I bought it at ~100k miles and that made a huge difference to the drivability and gave me an extra 4mpg on average. I like having the pan sunroof. I never open it but it would be very dark inside without it. Other issues I have had: broken coil spring, which was far more expensive to replace than the rear airbags. Thermostat failed. Parking brake module is currently broken and OEM replacements are £900! The turbo runs pretty hot and you can see that the paint on the plastic wing has faded from the heat. I have recently added the 12.5" Droid UK screen, which is excellent. Really brings the car up to date.
Well most common issue on e70 handbrake module. Another is transfer case. Rust, suspension airbaigs, jet washers those are normal wear and tear things that started from 2004 in e87 e90 and e60 models. Another very common thung on these that plastic that covers brake fluid and ebox break and crack and let water leak on nr5 injector. Then injector fails and it is very hard to get it out. CCC were crap till 2007 old one without 8 extra buttons, these dont fail that much. One more issue with them is logic7 amp they just die from overheating. And sos fault is tcu/bluetooth module that issue was from e60's aswell
Air bag suspension failure is not a huge issue for e70 - I fitted a completely engineered spring conversion kit for about 250 pounds. Labour was about three hours
Other than the electric parking brake actuator, at 170k kms my only complaint with my 2012 E70 30d N57 is the quality of the plastics BMW used in the car. The drivetrain has been perfect with just regular fluid changes, but I've had to replace a britlle plastic radiator fan, plastic water cover /engine partitions, degraded plastic central cup holder cover, sticky inner door pulls, plastic creaks everywhere in the cabin and most recently one of my headlamps went out because the inner wiring is brittle from the engine heat. Bmw: plastics and heat don't mix!!
You could find the same amount of issues on any large suv ,Ml's , Volvo's ,Audi anything with Rover on the bonnet ,all these issues are not all going to happen , perhaps a few on any individual car which for a 15 plus year old car is to be expected its not a Toyota
I've just bought a 2015 x5 MSport, absolutely love it so far. My question is what faults to look out for in this particular model and again would you recommend oil and fluid changes at regular intervals? Cheers
Lci is totally different car. Much much better. Do oil change on 7000 to 10000 km not more, drive it Italian style, don't leave it without gas, water and oil and it will last 500000km no problem. Mine is 300 000 km no timing chain issues, still stock original chain... Chip tuned to 300bhp it drives better than new. Don't be a fool, 5000 ml or 8000km and change oil and filters. Every 70000 km oil change and filters in transmision zf8hp70 and transfer case, it will last forever... I love my E70 3.0 d Xdrive Last 5 years.. Only vibration dumper pulley on 290000km breaks. For me around 250 to 400 eur meaintance per year. It is perfect.
Axle nuts on my 2012 x5d are so rusted that is not possible to unscrew them regular way. I have some idea how to remove them with welding or if that won’t work then I’ll have to cut them in that case I will need to replace the axles and bearings. Also the easy access is not working code is cus not talking with bus system. Otherwise is a really nice car for driving good for pulling I am pulling 2 atvs around 3500 lbs or 1590kg total weight with the trailer does good job. Oh I love when the car is getting dirty like yours here where I live in New Jersey I don’t have that luck.
Very good video, but actually i did not find any of these "issues" to be " awful", "catastrophic" , expensive - yes , but overall a very reliable car/engine 👍
This car looks like it’s had a hard life,Not surprised it has rust etc,When all cleaned up they look nice I have a 2009 35d msport with the M57 engine,Had a few problems which you do inherit with second hand cars,But I do look after it,Cleaning and maintenance etc,And I use Carly for faults etc,But Touch wood it’s ok for now,Great video George,Peace.🇬🇧🌹🏴
M57 v N57 - there's no getting around it, having to split the engine from the gearbox for the timing chain means I'll take the M57 all day long thankyou. Also check out the rods on the M57 to say a vw or Audi diesel of the same period - they are at least 25-30% thicker
I’d stay away from from the N53 too; reliable it is not with dodgy HPFP, NOX sensors and the biggest current issue is injectors which are hard to come by and bloody expensive for the latest revision. I dreading the injectors dying on my N54 because it’s a big day out. The latest revisions don’t okay nice with the older versions, so you need to do a whole bank or ideally six. The sodding things need coding to the car car tooo.
Interesting I have a 30d and every time I go over 70mph engine management comes on says restricted performance goes off after few seconds what is this ? Been back to dealer five times and they still haven’t fixed it is it something and nothing or major fault ?
Great cars apart from the few problems. I've got a 2004 x5 3.0D . So far I've changed a door handle... Heating hedgehog... All filters on the water bottle blocked....glow plug module and glow plugs ...rear wiper motor....when I got the car I changed every filter and oil apart from the gear box... I've put almost 5000 miles on the car and it hasn't skipped a beat so far. I do have a hole in the exhaust manifold that I need to fix but that's all my issues after almost 5k. I will be doing the egr delete to sort the swirl flaps out but the weather is to cold to be working on the car. good informative vid mate🤙. Ps them sub frames I try to pretend it's not happening by not looking under there much 😂
When i lived in Spain i had a X5 3.0lit D, but i bought the last of the E53 so a November 2006. I changed all fluids, filters etc and never had a issue. Think the E53 is seen as better than the e70 ??
Just say they are not connected and then it will not be fail. Same for things like rear central brake light - not working? Just say it's not connected then they can't fail it and they are never allowed to dismantle to check..
What about the propshaft failures on the facelift ZF-8 gearboxes? How many instances have you seen of them? Agree with all of your other points on oil changes aver 5-6k miles with the N57. That being said, the wife's mini countryman with the 1.6 N47 needed a new camchain at 106k miles, so I'm well aware of the issues with the Nx7 engines - that was with annual oil changes after 6-8k miles. Allegedly, the N57 doesn't succumb to it as much due to it being more of a balanced engine and also due to there being a different oil pump design/throughput. Reminds me, I need to have diff and transmission fluid changed.
Yes that is a major issue but is a recall done by BMW on my car. They replace if it’s faulty. Had mine 4 yrs and glow plugs plus s controller was main issue. Dpf forced regens we’re common as was fuel into oil due to no regens. Make sure you use v power or ultimate and dpf additives Redex. Touchwood no other issues.
Personally I hate the E70 Had a 2006 E53 3.0 Diesel for 380,000km. Not 1 single issue, apart from the radio amplifier in the boot. Serviced every 10000km (Oil & Filter) Maybe did 3 Airfilters. And never did the fuel filter No EGR delete Never serviced the Auto either Never had a more trouble free vehicle
I have x1 2010 xdrive N47 177Hp manual gearbox. Going to change differential oil front/rear + transmission -What kind of oils have to buy and how many liters? Cheers
The problem are the plastic parts and useless electronics in these cars. Bmw uses lots of electronics in many of their components for enhanced driving experience
I own an Bmw x5 2008 Msport. Its nightmare car. Common problems i encounter - DPs filter issues due to short rides, car door windows freeze in winters. Car stops intermittently in winters. Had to replace injectors and glow plugs. 😢 Airbag recalled received non 2023 and BMW gonna replace it for free.
My friend has a 2007 30d m57 and has done 300 000km on it. No gearbox oil change, nothing done to the engine, just the injectors amd DPF Regeneration. I see many videos on TH-cam saying X5 E70 are not reliable, why is that?
My mom bought a brand new x5 in 2022 and she still owes 60k but rn its worth 45k in the market. We decided to keep it because of the loss of money but we are worried that it will bring issues but I wanted to know if we take good care of it would an x5 still cause problems or is that only for irresponsible drivers?
At least these don't seem to have the horrendous moisture in the headlights issues like the f10/11. They fail at around 10 years and replacement headlights are over a grand each 😭😭
@@GeorgeAusters Just wish I'd known before buying my cheap (ish) f11. It's not really highlighted in buyers guides but when you start googling it's a massive problem (cost wise anyway!). Cheers.
Alright dude it’s mad you doing a video on this I’m currently looking for a X5 E70 or a Range Rover sport both between 2010-2012 I thought the BMW would be the safer bet but you got me thinking now lol.I get both of them ain’t cheap to run but didn’t think the X5 suffered with so many issues ?
3 kids and a Labrador is the main reason,I’ve always had a soft spot for one and I’m bored of the hatches saloons estates you know me dude how cars have I had since I’ve been following you 3 series 330d 5 series 520d Honda type R another 320d m sport now I got the focus st3 which is an amazing car just not big enough 😂 I’m just a petrol head who likes a change
And it’s cheap to own as long as you don’t buy a shit car in the first place without any history of services and things done to it. (had the x5 as well)
couldn't disagree more from long term owner experience! 2012 30d owner with just over 130k and ZERO issues from your very long list of things than 'COULD' go wrong. Only job other than maintenance costs has been a worn cog on the front wiper motor and that was a small job/low cost! All cars 'could' have a long list of issues and there are always worse versions of models hence the LCI on BMW's and facelifts on other marks.
love your channel, I need to ask in regards to Darkside developments, what can they do as I have looked at their offering for the BMW X5 but it is really confusing, is the price including fitting or just for the parts?
Just got rid of my e60 535d and got a 2010 e70 35d lol, hassle and maintenance free motoring bores me. Where's the fun in it George if it doesn't give you s£!t 😆
It’s pretty pointless giving the prices I paid for my car as prices can vary depending on exactly what needs doing and how long it takes so best to contact Darkside if you want a quote but let them know you came from my video👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters that's a get out mate, that information would be VERY Handy to know, obviously you got a major discount and good luck to you, but people with the same car/ engine would like to know......
@@t5jerry The prices for the parts are all on their website then it really depends exactly what you want done.. I had a full service as well so costed slightly more than if you was to just have the turbo and intercooler replaced
I have a walk around every other day on my x5 e70 xdrive 35d msport,I’ve done lots of rust prevention etc, rear subframe coated in wax oil bitumen based hammerite coating under body seal, haven’t done the front, trouble is with this model apart from msport kit all body is steel,I had the rust problem under the boot where the lights are for number plate,I masked it off with green frog tape in a straight line and dextrously painted it with silver direct to rust hammerite, you can’t see the paint shade difference because of the shadow of the handle on the boot, now and again a paint bubble will appear,I just deal with them one at a time, the stickiness from the vulcanised rubber coating on a lot of items in the car can be removed with isopropyl rubbing alcohol 99.9%,great stuff, blanking plates on rear like the washers on the front have been sealed so they don’t pop out, maintenance cosmetically is endless!!!!,great video George,Peace
Can you help me out George,I have a brand new Exide 019 battery and the alternator seems to be fine,I have a BM2 Bluetooth battery monitor fitted to the battery,my battery doesn’t seem to charge much even on a good run, could the alternator fuse be blown,if so do you know where it is on a E70,thanks

CCC were crap till 2007 old one without 8 extra buttons, these dont fail that much. One more issue with them is logic7 amp they just die from overheating. And sos fault is tcu/bluetooth module that issue was from e60's aswell
Turbo comes out the bottom on these .a engine mount has to be removed buts it's alot less painful than removing injectors and rocker cover .
Air bag suspension failure is not a huge issue for e70 - I fitted a completely engineered spring conversion kit for about 250 pounds. Labour was about three hours
how's the drive compare?
Cheers
Always love the E70 mainly the LCI platform it’s more refined inside and out especially the msport, and the 8spd gearbox is a bonus
Don't be a fool, 5000 ml or 8000km
and change oil and filters.
Every 70000 km oil change and filters in transmision zf8hp70 and transfer case, it will last forever... I love my E70 3.0 d Xdrive
Last 5 years.. Only vibration dumper pulley on 290000km breaks. For me around 250 to 400 eur meaintance per year. It is perfect.
E70 2009 3.5d stage 1, 500k km on the clock and still going. Regular maintenance oil change every 8k km and it will drive and serve you.
Expensive is an “awful issue” 😂
My mum has a n57 40d. The chain came loose and destoyed the entire top and bottom end.
Ps them sub frames I try to pretend it's not happening by not looking under there much 😂
Different car bud yours is the e53 👍
@@jamez7733 AHH yes I thought his was a E53 . My bad 👍
No swirl flaps on e53
@@gerryr1893 yes cheers Garry but we cleared that up 8 months ago^^^^^^^
When i lived in Spain i had a X5 3.0lit D, but i bought the last of the E53 so a November 2006.
I changed all fluids, filters etc and never had a issue. Think the E53 is seen as better than the e70 ??
Your x5 should have working headlight washers as it’s fitted with xenon headlights and would result in a mot failure if missing or not working
My washers don’t work on my X5 e70 35d msport, not tester just said it was a recommendation
The n57 chains do fail too , and the oil pumps
Personally I hate the E70
Had a 2006 E53 3.0 Diesel for 380,000km.
Not 1 single issue, apart from the radio amplifier in the boot.
Serviced every 10000km (Oil & Filter)
Maybe did 3 Airfilters.
And never did the fuel filter
No EGR delete
Never serviced the Auto either
Never had a more trouble free vehicle
The 5-seater E70 comes as standard with coil springs in the rear. I am happy my 2013 has the coil springs and no sunroof 😊
Probably yours is converted to springs... They all come with bags at rear
@@AUNS5 Nope, not converted. They don't all come with bags at rear.
I have x1 2010 xdrive N47 177Hp manual gearbox.
Going to change differential oil front/rear + transmission
-What kind of oils have to buy and how many liters?
Airbag recalled received non 2023 and BMW gonna replace it for free.
My friend has a 2007 30d m57 and has done 300 000km on it. No gearbox oil change, nothing done to the engine, just the injectors amd DPF Regeneration.
I see many videos on TH-cam saying X5 E70 are not reliable, why is that?
The gearbox won’t last much longer then if it’s never been serviced
@@GeorgeAusters I agree, but it lasted for more then 300k km
Really good review. I need second car to tow large lorry, a thinking about Mercedes GL, or BMW e70. Now I now that I need to bay BMW. Thx!
Similar problems to L322 (02-12) Range Rover, going of my experience with my own RR there’s cheaper to fix for same or similar issues.
knowledgable and well presented, nice vid mate, long term BMW man myself and never once found myself disagreeing :D
At least these don't seem to have the horrendous moisture in the headlights issues like the f10/11. They fail at around 10 years and replacement headlights are over a grand each 😭😭
Yep all cars have their common problems👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters Just wish I'd known before buying my cheap (ish) f11. It's not really highlighted in buyers guides but when you start googling it's a massive problem (cost wise anyway!). Cheers.
Alright dude it’s mad you doing a video on this I’m currently looking for a X5 E70 or a Range Rover sport both between 2010-2012 I thought the BMW would be the safer bet but you got me thinking now lol.I get both of them ain’t cheap to run but didn’t think the X5 suffered with so many issues ?
Any reason why you want an SUV? Personally I wouldn’t have either of those if it wasn’t for youtube👍🏻
Yeah that's fair enough.. Just make sure you have very deep pockets if you get either of the mentioned!
@@GeorgeAusters 🤣cheers dude 👍
A RR sport will take you into a new dimension of unreliability , an E70 is far more reliable in my experience
great video! ill be adding an x5 to basket now 👍
WHAT DID U DO PLEASE TELL ME BECAUSE IM LOOKING TO BUY ONE OF THESE, ARE THEY RELIABLE? AND WHAT ABOUT THE FUEL CONSUMPTION L/100KM PLEAse?
@edonramadani8017 also looking at buying an 07 x5 and don't really want to face any problems lol. I just want a reliable x5
Why doesn’t DPF AUTO REGEN?
Transmission fluid has to be swapped after 60 000 km not miles ZF specifies it. After 60k miles you can start to look for a new one instead 😂.
And it’s cheap to own as long as you don’t buy a shit car in the first place without any history of services and things done to it. (had the x5 as well)
Is this related to the E70 generation?
Yes
couldn't disagree more from long term owner experience!
Will the DPF still run a re-gen if the EGR is removed?
Its bad for dpf to remove egr
How much do you reckon the rear air bag replacement should cost in terms of labour for both?
Labour isn’t too much but the bags are expensive
@@GeorgeAusters would you say they are about 300 each for the bags
love your channel, I need to ask in regards to Darkside developments, what can they do as I have looked at their offering for the BMW X5 but it is really confusing, is the price including fitting or just for the parts?
Best to email them for an exact quote if you want fitting too.. Let them know I sent you!
What rims are those
2008....16 years old. What about the 2024's?
I keep seeing these cars broken down on the side of the motorway
You’ll see many if they’re not maintained properly!
Thrust arm bushings?
Were the e53 more reliable?
In many ways yes!
Is that easy to get red oil blinking? Some x5 always
Well done ,thank you.
My 2008 520d has the rust starting on the boot in the same place...bummer
Transmission??????
Just got rid of my e60 535d and got a 2010 e70 35d lol, hassle and maintenance free motoring bores me. Where's the fun in it George if it doesn't give you s£!t 😆
😅
Come on Georgie boy, give us some really USEFUL. Information on your recent work done at dark side , cost of parts , remapping ect ect.
Paldies par informaciju 0:11
All i can say...dont compare one faulty x5 wiith others!
I haven’t.. this video is just highlighting the common problems👍🏻
How old is that thing? Lol. And obviously it wasn’t maintained.
It’s a 2008 and I’ve done all the main jobs on it👍🏻
Can you help me out George,I have a brand new Exide 019 battery and the alternator seems to be fine,I have a BM2 Bluetooth battery monitor fitted to the battery,my battery doesn’t seem to charge much even on a good run, could the alternator fuse be blown,if so do you know where it is on a E70,thanks
@@GeorgeAusters Are you open to questions George,as BMW’s seem to be your thing?
Have you coded and registered the battery?
