I've had my 07 X3 for 4 years with very few problems. It drives great like all B-mers do. The sunroof didn't work when I bought it (the reason for the good price). Found out it was unplugged because the interior cover was jammed. The only problem is the rain getting on the floor constantly so I'm trading it for an X5.

My dad bought a 2008 35d back in 2014, I mainly use it now and it drives great!
In the 7 years of owning it the maintenance hasn't been bad.
The things that stand out is replacing the air suspension once, then a quite big accident back in 2016 on the autobahn while driving 210 km/h (accident repairs like bumpers and side airbags) and lately gearbox problems caused by a scamming mechanic that didn't change the gearbox oil (changed oil and its fine now) and a few electrical gremlins like lights and the parking brake getting stuck, but that's an easy fix and only happened once.
Other than that its great, the ride is very comfortable and it has good performance. The sound is pretty good in my opinion, it handles great and has tonnes of space for cargo and people. Also fuel economy is good.
The only things I dislike about the car is the fact it doesn't have a heated steering wheel in the winter and no HUD.
But that's not really the cars fault, we bought it used, so we obviously couldn't pick and choose what options the car had.

As a former long term (4 decades) I an say BMW have a presence. However to own one out of warranty is an exercise in high maintenance with failures that should not be accepted in a vehicle of this stature! Our current 750Li is our last BMW, we have had it with such common failures across the line. Thanks for your honest review!

Stiff ride, but we have great roads, so not a big deal.
I got out of a loaded Tahoe LT and into our X5 with standard stereo and the BMW sounded a lot better. Maybe it's an upgrade, I got it CPO. But it holds its own.
Few suvs handle so well, especially at speed. Very confidence inspiring and fatigue reducing on trips.
Throttle tip in is sluggish (petrol I6)
    Brakes are fantastic
Ergonomics are typical BMW, ok once you get used to it but not intuitive at all.
    Soft close doors are nice.
    Visibility is good.
Sport seats are decent, but a little hard. Not nearly as good as Volvo.
Passenger front seat legroom is bizarrely tight for this size vehicle.
I6 struggles some under the nearly 5,000 lbs. Fine once it's moving, but not effortless acceleration, it works for it.
    Great looking
Well built in terms of fit/finish and lack of signs of aging(garaged)
Tires are expensive. $950 for a set of rears, installed.
Runflats ride rougher than reg, but no spare on ours.
Great overall size. Not too big, not too small.

Bought a 2008 e70 brand new, plethora of rattles, noisy suspension . Was Only good on highways, this is in Sydney. I'm so angry at this brand, som many visits to the dealership to resolve issues in the first 3 months of ownership mostly rattles. Front lower control arms had to be replaced within first 3 months. Owned the car for 8 years , fixing rattles all those years, mainly in the rear boot area. Coolant leaks developed with a cracked reservoir on the 5th year. 20,000km after 8 years as it was hardly used. Never again - BMW. Settled with a Toyota, a little boring but I have forgotten where the potholes were.

No I'm not angry because I couldn't go off-road I'm angry because the suspension failed when the car was under 2000km, rattles and squeaks from rear trunk still under 2000km, I'm angry as I bought it brand new and received no support from BMW in resolving the issue. The car was rattling from various corners like I mentioned earlier. It was hardly used

I have driven perhaps 20 vehicles over decades, and I have never had a "rattle' problem. My thinking is that noise bothers some people, and they have unrealistic expectations about the sounds a vehicle makes. My wife has never noticed a rattle. Nor my family members. I can't find anyone with a "rattle" problem, but there are people who are driven crazy by them who complain. Go get yourself a nice cushy soft Lexus RX and float down the road.

My wife has the 2011 Diesel X5 with sport package. It's been a great car except for the shitty plastic interior that creaks as your drive down the road , the peeling of the black areas (BMW says its from having hand lotion but that's BS), and the guminess of the door handles that are rubber but end up turning black after awhile. Honestly... no major issues.

Don't forget 2011-1012 N55 spun bearings. Just spent 8k on replacing an engine because of this. Great car, but spinning a bearing for no reason at all is insane. Just Google it,, a lot of people with a spun bearing and nothing to do but replace the engine. The cost of replacing a shaft and piston is easily going to be the same as a new engine. 20k from BMW, 9k from independent BMW mechanics. And there are no N55 engines out there cheap like the N54. I literally have to keep a timebomb because I have 14k in purchase and 8k in an engine.

The timing chain can be more worn-rattling noise after cold start, also the injectors, DPF filter and the two turbochargers, these are the most expensive things. Also if it has automatic gearbox, then that can be also worn-mainly if the transmission oil has not been changed. Regular maintance history is a big advantage.

BMW skimp on quality of parts that are prone to wear, hence most parts are only manufactured for upto 100K lifespan. I have an X3, love the drive, but have to be on top of maintenance or else things start breaking. I also have a Honda CRV done 400K!! and still going strong, engine is really dry, never looked after it well, but it keeps giving.

Hi, I listen you many times. Thanks you I have now a beautiful passat CC 2010 that runs as an arrow! I use my cars to travel in highways. I am curious to learn more about 2010 BMW X5M. Would you advice me about this SUV please?Thank you very much.

    • @differentcarreview-dcr
      @differentcarreview-dcr  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi
the reliability of the X5M is actually not bad, but it really depends on the actual condition of the car and if the previous owner abused it or not
-but generally speaking the injectors can fail / leak even after 100 000 km, so I would be definitely prepared to change them
-the turbochargers can fail as well, although mostly on the abused cars
-and oil consumption can also occur, again mostly on the badly maintained or abused cars
the gearbox or differentials should be ok, and the usual stuff like the tires or brakes will be obviously more expensive to replace
other than this it’s not a bad engine, but as I said it really depends on how the previous owner treated it
so if you have extra money for the maintenance and fuel then ok, if not, then I would choose something else

    • @differentcarreview-dcr

the X5 and X6 are technically the same, so it doesn't matter which one you choose
for example this X5 is not a bad car, but it really depends if you can find one which is in good shape, and keeping some extra money for the additional repairs is definitely a good idea mainly if you are buying this kind of a used luxury car

the X6 E71 has similar reliability as this X5
the 30d and 40d diesel engines are good, from the petrol engines I would avoid the 4.4l V8 - 50i
problems with the high pressure fuel pumps or injectors can occur+the usual petrol/diesel engine issues, but at 110 000 km you shouldn't have a lot of issues
however I would definitely keep some extra money for the additional maintenance and find an independent BMW specialist

    • @differentcarreview-dcr
      @differentcarreview-dcr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, the manual gearbox is always more reliable than the automatic, but if the automatic gearbox is in good condition and you change the oil in it regulalry after 60 000 km, then it should be also all right: From the 270, 220, 320 engines you can choose whichever you want, but I would recommend the 270 and the 320

BMW 5 XL model vs other models
I have been researching about the BMW X5, my preference is 2008 onward. I have come across an issue that may influence
greatly my decision making, I realized that there are XL models, unfortunately
there is almost no information about the difference between these models (XL)
and the others. I have also realized that it seems to be a little bit difficult
to find auto parts for the XL model. I would not like to import a model that
will cause me headaches finding the parts. I also noticed that the XL model weighs
1800KG, whereas the other models weigh 2100KG. Does the XL model weight have anything
to do with the material used? Does it have more plastic? Can you or anyone else
clarify me about the XL model?

  • @SlightReturn666

What an absolute piece of garbage. Plus, electric water pump. No spare tire. My '13 left me on the road so many times I finally had to sell it, with only 80k miles.
Just for the heck of it, I sold the E70 and massively downgraded to a 2013 Subaru Outback -- it was the last year I could find with a manual transmission. It's sooooooo much more enjoyable than the X5. Obviously slower, less luxurious and louder inside. But the overall experience is so much better. It's narrower, too, so considerably easier to park. One thing I am surprised is that to my eye the humble Outback appears to have much more room in the rear seat and rear cargo area ... never expected that. I just HATED going to the stupid BMW dealer and running up a $2,000 charge every time ... I mean, that is absolutely nuts!!! The E70 needed new tires and a set was like $1200! No, no, no, no. So I put it on Facebook Marketplace and sold it, and found the Sub.
My neighbors probably wonder if I've fallen on hard times or something since I've owned BMWs for the last 25 years and a used Outback is a pretty humble car. But no more BMWs, period. I am done.

      Hi
from these two cars the X5 is a better choice, the 4.8 l V8 is overall a good engine, but you need to have some extra money for the additional repairs, mainly oil and coolant leaks can occur
-if you choose a car which is equipped with the air suspension on the rear axle, then be prepared to change the air struts because they will start to leak at some point
-listen for strange clunking/knocking noises from the suspension and check for uneven tire wear which can indicate worn control arm bushings
-if you will follow the fluid change interval chart which is at the end of my latest videos, then you can avoid plenty of possible issues
-and of course choose a car with regular maintenance history and try to find and independent specialist who can in a lot of cases repair the car better and for significantly lower cost than the dealer
