    I know Tucker and his glasses have you suspicious, but in the visual language of anime, a character's eyes being hidden doesn't always mean they are hiding a bad thing. For example; 14:02 here, the animators are trying to show how granny is holding in the pain and trauma of the war.

    • @davidtucker9498

      The glasses indicate that they are hiding something deeply personal and important about their identity.
      That TYPICALLY means that it's something dangerous, like they want to cause you harm, but obviously like you said, not always the case.

    Something you should take note of.
    Alchemy is 100% a knowledge thing, if you know how to perform a transmutation, then you can perform that transmutation.
    The only thing holding Ed back from performing medical alchemy is his lack of medical knowledge and insight, the only reason other alchemists can't mimic Roy's flames is because they don't actually know everything about how he makes his flames.
    Furthermore, when it comes to Construction, Deconstruction and Reconstruction; those are not different types of alchemy, they are the stages of alchemy.
    Construction is about understanding your starting materials, the wood fibres in any wood you are transmuting, the crystal structure of any metals you might transmute. Construction on its own is just visualising what you have (for example a tub filled with the precisely measured chemical makeup of an adult human), what you want to end up with (a live human) and visualising how to arrange the former into the latter; generally, drawing (or constructing) a transmutation circle is part of the construction phase.
    Deconstruction is the first part of this where there is any active alchemy happening, you tear the materials up, physically, chemically, even possibly on the quantum level, in preparation for reassembling it into the product you want.
    Lastly, Reconstruction is the stage of the alchemical process wherein the deconstructed materials are reassembled into the desired product.
    Every single alchemical transmutation you've seen in this show so far EXCEPT for the few by Scar, involved all three of these things. For Scar... his construction simply doesn't contain instructions for reconstruction, and so all his alchemy does is shred the materials (like a state alchemist) into... smaller pieces.
    Even though Ed doesn't construct a transmutation circle, he still does construction, it's when he claps his hands together (the ring made by his arms is the transmutation circle, or something like that).

      Yeah, alchemy isn’t a magic power you’re born with. It’s more akin to rocket science. Anyone can be an alchemist the same way anyone can be a rocket scientist; it’s hard work and you gotta be smart, but nothing is actually given to some people rather than others.

    Easiest way it was explained to me was:
    Alchemical Knowledge = What the hell are you trying to do?
    Alchemical Formula = This is how you do what you're trying to do.
    Alchemical Transmutation = Go and do what you're trying to do.
    If you don't have the knowledge, then you have no idea what to do in the first place.
    If you don't have the formula then you're just shooting in the dark and risk the reaction being random.
    If you don't know how to perform the transmutation/don't have the right circle then all the knowledge in the world won't do you shit.
    Alchemy in this world is a science in of itself.

    since its come up a few times now,: in terms of age, Ed is 11 when they try to bring their mom back, 12 when he becomes a state alchemist (after a year of rehabilitation for major limb/nerve augmentation), 14 during liore, and turns 15 shortly before the incident with Shou Tucker. By the very end of the show he is 16, so a vast majority of the show happens over the course of a year. ALphonse is a year younger than Ed.

  • @BGTitanAvatar
    @BGTitanAvatar หลายเดือนก่อน +32

    Two things to keep in mind:
    1) Winry doesn’t realize that Ed and Al are actually doing dangerous stuff. So she thinks they were both just being incredibly reckless with her automail.
    2) Unfortunately, animation but specifically anime has a horrible habit of people hitting others in the name of comedy. With anime from the 90s and earlier in the 2000s especially, it can be a super over the top medium and so emotions are blown way of proportion and thus characters will hit others for “comedic effect”. Is it great? No, but it’s a trope of the genre and not meant to be taken seriously (they even usually have characters go Chibi to help with that notion, to make it less serious). Your mileage will vary but it’s something to keep in mind.
    I’m probably just spouting the obvious and you most likely gathered all this but I felt it was worth mentioning.

    • @withxoutxlife
      @withxoutxlife หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      In fairness, slapstick comedy has existed in animation since antiquity. You can watch any of the old loony toons scenes to see examples of it. Perhaps people are more conscious about it in anime, because they take the time to flesh out the characters, so the viewer actually feels protective of the characters taking the hits. I suppose it can take some getting used to if you aren't accustomed to it.

    • @BGTitanAvatar
      @BGTitanAvatar หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @withxoutxlife Yeah, I think it’s different because these shows have serious moments usually and we’re supposed to be invested in plot and characters (like you said) so something like this tends to stick out more.

    • @fllthdcrb
      @fllthdcrb 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Not sure why you think slapstick is "horrible". That seems overly judgmental. Now me personally, do I adore it? It's definitely not my favorite form of comedy. I'm more into the cerebral forms like irony and such. But I wouldn't say I hate slapstick.

    • @BGTitanAvatar
      @BGTitanAvatar 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @fllthdcrb I never said slapstick was horrible. I love cartoons like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and stuff which is 95% slapstick. I have no problem with that.
      It’s when you get into stories like FMAB and other story and character driven shows where they start hitting each other, I can see where some people could be turned off to certain characters (like this reactor was to Winry when she hit Al and Ed) because of this comedic choice. I personally am so used to anime and FMAB in general that I don’t even notice when it happens anymore.

    • @fllthdcrb
      @fllthdcrb 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@BGTitanAvatar Well, you didn't literally say that, but you referred to it as a "horrible habit". I think I see what you're getting at. As you said, one's mileage will vary. I tend to like it, even when it is slapstick.
      I guess the best advice to the reactor is to realize this is how anime tends to be and try not to let it bother her too much.

It's not made as clear in the anime, but resembool (their hometown) is north of ishval, and alot of towns in the east were emptied out because people were sent off to fight. All alchemy is understanding, deconstructing and constructing, in that order. When they say that they mean it literally, seeing what something is made of, taking it apart into the atoms that make it up and then putting those atoms together in a way that makes something else. Scar seems to stop at the "deconstructing major parts" step to just break things. The way that the Philosopher's Stone works is that it lets alchemists ignore the part where you have to move existing atoms, which lets them turn anything into anything. Normally, all medical alchemy would be able to do is put ripped tissue back together and stuff like that, but with a Philosopher's Stone, Dr. Marcoh is able to heal anything from broken teeth to lost limbs, at least until the Stone's power runs out.

    • @timmooney7528

      The philosopher's stone is a cheat code around the law of equivalent exchange. It's like if you made a cake, and you were either missing essential ingredients or didn't know you needed them. The philosopher's stone would deliver the end product without the material and energy cost. That is why it is coveted by Edward to get his and limbs and Al's body back.

Also, no spoiler, just a bit of a conjecture, but I think Ed’s type of alchemy is more of a props and gizmos variety. Machines, weapons, fun explosions, etc. Metal and stone and big noise. So, y’know… he’s all boy. Marcoh is, from what we've seen of him, 100% using his alchemy to cure diseases/heal wounds... sometimes likely using the stone for riskier situations/problems.
    Edit: Construction, deconstruction, reconstruction *all* happen when you do a full transmutation. Construction is understanding both the base materials and the end product, deconstruction is taking the materials and breaking them down into a form you can then use (or, as with Scar, simply 'destroying' them), and reconstruction is taking your now 'malleable' materials and making the thing you wanted to make.

    I don't think Marco healing the people necessarily implies he's using the Philosophers Stone on them. He's a medical alchemist so that implies he could heal people before having a philosophers stone.
    There are limits to medical alchemy but as long as you have all the materials there you can heal them that's the rules. The exact limits however are the thing we have to learn. There is certainly enough to kind of figure things out halfway but that's for you to speculate about.

They also were told while investigating Marco that you go to see him, there's a flash of light, and you're cured. No drawing circles were mentioned. There's other dialog that implies he's using the stone to help the townsfolk later, but that's super territory.

    Btw, with Granny's glasses getting tinted a lot. That tends to be a trope in anime that's meant to hide the emotions of the character. Perhaps implying that there's a lot of emotions hidden past what you can see at the forefront. Sometimes that "something" that's hidden is a secret, like with Shao Tucker and Nina. But it doesn't always mean that

      Europe in general is a point of fascination for Japan, historically; Germany was a particular one as there was a bit more interaction in the early 20th Century. But the depictions of the continent in the latter half of the century were themselves idealised due to limited information; nowadays they’re generally more accurate than they used to be.
      If anyone wants cultural analyses of certain idiosyncrasies in Japanese media, I recommend Moon Channel’s videos. Of course, beware of potential spoilers therein…

      @lady_draguliana784 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@borjankosarac3645 well met, but I want to push back on one point: the Axis Powers, in general, are often looked at with disturbing favor in Japan. Even modern Germany has publicly condemned the Japanese govt. for _refusing_ to teach students about the crimes of the Axis powers, such as the holocaust, nor the politics that drove the war: instead keeping to droll maps-and-movements of the war _if it's even mentioned._
      Though apparently they do mention the war-crimes of the Russians and Allies... perhaps even insinuating that the Allies were the aggressors against the Japanese and Axis Powers at times...
      In short, to this day, the Japanese govt. and much of it's media is credibly accused by watch-dog groups of Glorifying the Nazi's and Italian Fascist Military, Holocaust Denial, Denying all the other well-documented war-crimes and genocides that the Nazi's, Italians, _and Japanese_ committed throughout the war. And either teaching lies, or failing to teach the truth in schools.
      much the way Florida want's to whitewash America's history of Slavery, the Japanese seem to want to whitewash their history of racist imperialism. (and make no mistake, the Japanese Nationalist movement that led up to the war absolutely asserted the Japanese "race" to be a "Supreme" one, deserving to rule by right of "Superiority")
      There's been a strong Nationalist movement in Japan since the war too, esp. among the elite, who like to pretend the shame of defeat didn't happen; with revisionist histories being taught in at least _some_ schools, and some young Japanese folk, even well educated, being totally unaware of the, shall we say, _unsavory_ actions of the Japanese military in China and the Philippines etc.
      Anime is one of the few media that can regularly get away with social commentary about it, but that goes both ways.

    12:37 it's a common trope in anime that it's acceptable for girls to resort to violence over the tiniest frustration. They'll often even hit a guy over something they themselves did.
    (For example, if the girl walks into a bathroom fully unclothed to take a bath, without knocking on the closed door first to see if it's occupied, and the guy is already in there taking a bath, HE gets punched through a wall and called a pervert, just for starters.)

    So Winry beating on the boys is basically her way of showing how much she cares about them. Yes, brutal normally, but its an anime, so it's kind of a cartoony, goofy thing not really meant to be taken seriously, which is why they animate them goofy during those moments.

    girl's violence by punching kicking boys is an anime trope
    sometimes boys will get nose bleed or puking blood by these treatment
    don't think about it too much, you will get this a lot in most anime

    24:01, lil spoilers but the philsopher stone was made thru not so saintly means. But its ultimately like any other alchemy or object to humans at the end of the day in this anime, a tool. Marco uses it to heal people despite knowing the costs of making one. He'd best just destroy it, but that wouldn't be enough for his conscious. Its a great power that he has an oppurtunity to easily abuse it, but he chose to find a use of it bettering people around him. This is what I want Ed to become one day...
