Why is this so unusual ? Russia has the longest Arctic ocean border amongst the arctic countries. Also Russia has been investing for more than a century in North Pathway. All of those makes Russia entitled for a lion portion in Arctic resources.

Favorite country ❤️ Russian. I was looking for this video, some channels are trying to make negative image of Russia by showing that they are capturing arctic and making Army base camp. It's all about competition, right to make route and taking under control.

Narrator has forgot to mention one important thing when describing geopolitical dependency from the supplier of natural gas and oil.
The dependency is mutual. The bulk of oil and gas supply from Russia to EU comes through the aforementioned Eastern European countries, and they heavily manipulated their position as an oil/gas transit countries to gain exclusive cheap offers on gas and oil from Russia. Sometimes they forced other kinds of political and economical benefits like cheap loans from Russia.
The demands were becoming increasingly inadequate from the Russian point of view, so it decided to start several expensive projects like a pipeline to Turkey over the Black sea and to Germany over the Baltic Sea.
The pipelines over the Eastern European countries is indeed a mean of manipulation. But not by Russia, but by Eastern European controllers, which are in fact United States. They use this influence over Western Europe oil and gas supplies to leverage EU political process and use Eastern European countries to promote US interests in EU.
That is why Nord Stream 2 becomes such a problem right now, receiving an unprecedented pressure from US authorities, including direct economic and political blackmail. If it is completed - Russia will be able to finally abandon its oil and gas transit over Eastern Europe and supply these goods directly to predictable, lucrative and much more responsible politically Western European market.
It is mostly a question of losing influence on EU from US point of view, and not a question of losing a share of the shale oil and gas market.
So true ...which was reflected in Ukraine behavior in 2014 after the Maidan coup.

Also the war will generate a lot of money for their weapons factories. Just an example, Germany will spend 2.800 million dollars just buying 34 F-35, 82 million each one.

Great video and super informative. I did a bit of research and found out that out of the 4 tentative routes the only viable one is the NSR (Northern Sea Route), the North Western Passage via Canada is definitely a no go despite being the second shortest, reason is that the sea is permanently covered by ice and ice thickness is in the range of 3 to 4 meters thick and very compacted whereas the NSR is free of ice for roughly 3 to 4 months and when is covered by ice is only 1 to 2 meters thick and not as compacted as the North Western Passage hence a lot easier for Icebreakers, all of these because earth inclination that exposes NSR to the sun melting the ice for a few months and when is covered by ice is not so thick nor compact. Other reasons that I found that makes the North Western Passage too dangerous is the number of Icebergs lose in the area, similar to what happened to the Titanic. And there is the political reason stated in the video but I believe is not as important as the reasons I mentioned. Seems to me that there is only one clear and viable option and is NSR.
You need to research more. The NWP is ice free most of the year and is optimal for Asian to European trade. Canada wouldn't be building 6 armed navy icebreakers if it wasn't
plus NWP is closer to the magnetic North pole, so very difficult for ships to navigate
@@scottmccambley764 Canada can try to open up an alternative to NSR but I have doubts it will really get anywhere or would be used as much.
My friend you simply forget about using the northern route as everything on the ships will freeze and ships may not reach their destination. Additional support from air and icebreakers will add to the cost. Cold is the biggest challenge

Amit, this is very informative and well investigated. I appreciate your videos! Although a shorter distance from point A to point B, The Arctic sea route is not the most efficient transportation corridor due to its unstable climate and marginal economic impact. The climate patterns may change year over year, needing many more icebreakers or having not enough at some point in time, which would indeed be a dealbreaker, instead. The fact is, trade routes are meant to cover many stops, each of which is a trading hot spot, and not only service the end points (China to Europe), Even the Canadian Arctic route is inefficient for the same reasons, even if only there is one stop between Asia and Europe, Panama is a major hot spot for Latin Ameircan trade. Think of it as a bus line with many stops, which is the reason for the bus line. The end points are just that -- one more stop in the busline line.
This was such a well put together video. It's 1-1/2 years old but now we can see how Russia's plans are unfolding. They are pushing forward and now working together with China to really make an impact on other countries needing both their resources. We may not all get along but you have to respect the foresight in Russia's grasp of important political and geographical areas.
Can you do a video on Russia's and Iran's plans to build a canal through Iran from the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf? India could also profit from it as it would shorten the trade distance between India, Russia and Europe.

You have to add that beside 10.000km more in south route ( Japan-Germany)..in south route you have to pay Suez channel fees and security service to protect the ship form pirates in Gulf of Aden..

Russia would need to build a few harbours to provide supplies to the ships, and also services for maintenance, crew needs, etc..
Russia should do exactly that, alone as much as possible. It would aim to grow infrastructure to the vast north. Of course it requires investments upfront.

The Arctic route will eventually become the main shipping route between the trade of the Far East and EU, reducing its journey by nearly 5,000 km; though the current route via the Strait of Malacca and Suez Canal will still be busy as trade with Africa will continue to grow.
Don't need Suez to trade with Africa.
@@wesmo_ , Well the canal is still needed as trade with the Mediterrean Ports which are unlikely to use the Arctic route.
I am not sure if all ships can be used on the Arctic route. I suspect that the requirements for hulls are more stringent, you can bang chunks of ice from time to time even when you follow an icebreaker -- in a long convoy. It will be a winner from Japan, Korea and north China to north Europe -- Mediterranean Europe is close to Suez Canal unlike England and the Netherlands. One risk is much lower up north: pirates.
@@piotrberman6363 , Even the ports south of Shanghai will still enjoy the shorter route; though if the rail freight across the Eurasian landmass could achieve the speed and volume of the Class 1 operators of North America, the scenario will change drastically! Of course, both Russia and China and all the countries in-within will gain!

Wow, this is quite a good analysis. A lot of aspects were considered. One suggestion that I have is to visually show northern routes(both Europe-Asia and North America) are shorter than the southern ones so you would need anther map projection. I am subscribing ...

US has 1 (one!) operational icebreaker. :) Russia has already begun to build the first Leader-class icebreaker, which will provide year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route.

Because this integration creates a dependence.
Look at NATO. There the countries are 'allies'. But if you look at it now, it is the US who is dictating a lot of European international policies. The integration has made the European partners dependent on the US.
Look at the whole F35 saga. European countries invested in the development of the F35 with the agreement that they get acces to the source code of the software and things like that. Than after some countries payed and had to pay even more because of American cost overruns the US simply tells them that they won't give access to the source code. This in complete violation of the contracts they signed. So European partners are left with an exploded bill and get an aircraft that regularly needs software updates from the US. If they don't get them, there multi billion dollar investment becomes worthless.
Or in the case of to Turkey:"Yes, you payed. Yes, you helped in the development of some componenents. Yes, we allready signed the contracts with you.
But we don't like you any more and you don't get the F35."
(I am not defending Turkey or there position, but simply stating facts)

The part on the F35 is based on statements made om mainstream news in several EU countries. It was in political debates in several countries. This is not news that is somewhere out there, it is mainstream. Several countries like Germany (who could really use the F35) don't want to buy it for that reason. They are thinking of buying the older F18 super hornet. Even if it has allmost no stealth features.
So that will probably mean that it is fake.

Great video with great content , enjoy it very much , many others talking about geopolitics and Russia are heavily biased and / or very obviously anti Russian swaying reality , appreciate your fact based and genuine info. with reality based predictions . Love it or hate it Russia is the master and very obviously intends to remain the dominant power in northern regions however if we take an unbiased look at Russia’s actions past and present its clear Russia wants to defend its northern interests but at same time its open to allow anyone to exploit it resources and to work together with anyone regardless of alliance , in fact right now some of biggest UK snd US oil companies conduct operations in Russian regions which benefits all sides unlike US northern regions where no Russian companies have operated past or present .

It must be added that it's ONLY a number of total units in service. No word about the type and capabilities of said icebreakers. E.g. Estonian 2 icebreakers are lowest class with very limited capabilities (can only break think ice), while China and Japan both have 1 each in service which are of way higher class.
Russia already dominates far beyong compared to others with the amount of icebreakers which outclass any other icebreakers in the world. In the near future Russia will own 10 of such icebreakers alone.Just let it think in for a moment: - Russia in the near future will not only have outclassed and outmatched icebreakers serving in its arctic fleet, but also THE AMOUNT of those outclassed and outmatched machines will OUTMATCH any other icebreaker fleet on the planet. "Domination" is imo a non-sufficient word to describe the situation lol. It's ike putting Magnus Carlson to play a chess match against a newborn baby... It's not even funny...

Not even close. Canada has 21 existing Coast Guard Icebreakers and in addition is building 6 Armed Royal Canadian Navy and 2 additional Unarmed Coast Guard Icebreaking patrol ships. Two very large Polar Class 8 icebreaker contracts have been awarded to two shipyards as well.
