The melting of ice in the north pole will give Russia such a strategic advantage that it has never seen before, and this modern-day Russian silk road is just the beginning. Especially since almost none of Russia's major cities are on the coast, compared to the huge western cities that will get absolutely destroyed by rising sea levels. Russia would most likely be the only country to benefit from all the ice in the world melting. Due to many things such as the northern regions of the world becoming the more ideal temperature for life, which Russia controls most of. This will bring so many migrants into Russia that it could finally become a global superpower.
Many will say Russia will not benefit due to the war, but that's far from the truth. Pretty much every emerging economy is located in Africa, with these countries typically wanting to cut ties with their colonizers (the west). As soon to be the strongest country in the world, China depends heavily on Russia, so Russia is in the best position for the future of humanity.

A major added bonus for Russia is that this route will open up it's main rivers to inland navigation. Most of it's rivers flow North, towards the largely inaccessible Arctic Ocean. Throughout most of Russia's history this meant a big competitive disadvantage compared to the rest of Europe, which is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, bringing direct shipping routes from major cities to the whole world.

    • @danielduncan6806

Another interesting aspect in the development of the Russian north is floating nuclear power plants. Due to the remoteness of the northern coast from the most populated and industrially developed areas, there are certain problems with electricity supply. And one of the solutions is floating nuclear power plants, which make it possible to deliver a nuclear reactor to a remote place across the sea and supply electricity to tens of thousands of people. One such reactor is already operating in the northernmost city of Russia - in Pevek.

The idea behind is to monopolize the route to Europe only, and by no means has any impact on World trade, as the only recipient of this route is China. The fact that Russia needs to spend almost a trillion USD over a few decades, and still use the arctic breakers to clear routes indicates that the Northern sea route still is technically a gamble and a large money sink.
Because of the geo-politics, US/EU can sanctions any shipping companies using the route, force a reroute and by denying port entrance. That would make any investments on the entire Northern circle by Russia useless.

Will be interesting to know, Russia has plans not only to create the optical cable channel the 'Polar Express', but to create a bunch of the mega-data centers in North, providing that service for the international data giants, like Google or something like it in China, including for own national ones. That can decrease the cost of usage of such data centers dramatically, since more than 50% of electricity/energy consumption in a such datacenter is used for the cooling of the huge server farms! The expensive cooling task will be much simplified in the Northern conditions, obviously... The only problem so far is to create a network of new powerplants and electric lines in the areas of Northern Russia (a huge amount of electricity still required for datacenters anyway), but I do know Russia has a lot of plans for doing that, including the mobile sea nuclear plant platforms!

Russia has about 1.7 trillion, so not only is the US' gdp about a dozen times larger, its gdp is growing faster so the gap is only growing.
The Russian goverment is predicting this project will grow gdp by 2% a year, they have a history of seriously overstimating projects like these (who doesnt in fairness?) But even if we take that at face value it changes basically nothing.
As to the military - Russia cannot hope to compete with NATO and this port really doesnt change that.
The US alone has about 3.4 million tons of warships. Russia can muster maybe 750,000 tons total (also the US' ships are generally more advanced).

I think it's a great idea! The Suez Canal is the lynch pin of the world's economy (As we've seen the effects of a couple incidents now) and probably shouldn't be solely relied upon to the extent that we do. Russian governance is actually very efficient. Very impressive in handling an incredibly harsh terrain that is thousand times larger than that of Singapore run by an authoritarian system that the West lauds as success. If only the West keeps their hands off (e.g. regime change activities) and learn to respect the red lines of their superpower counterparts (e.g. Monroe Doctrine equivalent to promote a neutral Ukraine) collaboration between them isn't impossible. But western arrogance and entitlement will continue to try to sabotage a collaborative multipolar world.
Western governments also need to stop the farce virtue signaling when Russia, for it's size, is only responsible for 5% of total greenhouse gas emission. They're fourth but U.S. is 2nd and worst with 15%, China is first (28%) which U.S. outsource their business and largely benefits from. Not to mention the West's destruction in Amazon rainforests and exploitation elsewhere (Africa, Middle East, Indonesia, etc).

    • @Atlantis-tx2mv
      @Atlantis-tx2mv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Geographic size is rather not a point to greenhouse gas emission rate, population and economic activities are.
In the other hand, pipelines and oil and gas exploration infrastructure (and millions of abandoned oil and gas wells) are the greater points of methane emission (far more serious than CO2 emission for greenhouse effect), which Russia has a lot in its overwhelming territory landscape...
If you sums that with melting permafrost and the green house emissions associated to that, and, last but not the least, millions of hectares of Siberian forest burning each year because of draws and continuous hotter and hotter summers there, we have the recipe for a global catastrophe!

The northern sea route along Russia's coats opens up every summer and has been used by less ice tolerant ships for over 100 years. Ice Breakers have got bigger and better since WW2 as well as other technologies for driving through ice, which will give the impression that Arctic is melting. Also, maximum Arctic ice occurs 3 months after the shortest day and minimum ice occurs 3 months after the longest day, which indicates that the polar ice is driven by temperatures from the lower latitudes.

Direct pragmatic decisions taking advantage of a changing environment.
The short and long-term outcomes of such a project economically environmentally and geopolitical are hard to calculate.
Because such large projects generate so much data noise that nuances are easily lost and it's the subtle details of such a project that can accumulate to decide its ultimate success or failure.
