Fellow travelers are just like you. If you stay at hostels or on work-exchange places you will meet lots of people. A good conversation starter is to ask someone where they have been traveling, or where are they from.

    • @summervibesonly7

Ι think most of the travellers have the same insecurity, and usually expect others to approach them. But honestly, just go talk, I'm also anxious about it and usually other people have come to me fortunately, but I've come to the realisation ; it's your journey and you should get THE BEST out of it, why depend its outcome on whether others will do it or not for you? Be brave enough to just go and say hi where are u from? And everything will come 💕 always have in mind that u are not the only person in that room of travellers who is insecure about talking.

  • @SpellFire

    Here's a list I made for myself:
    1. Gym (also, just a tip, stretching is very important when exercising, so I recommend doing that at least 10 minutes before and after)
    2. Get a job (I've worked full time for like 3 months, now I'm part time)
    3. Re-decorate your room. I had peeling wallpaper and moth eaten carpets. So I redid all that, reorganized where everything goes and bought some Ikea furniture. It looks amazing now.
    4. Get some hobbies. I'm trying to get into digital drawing and also trying to learn Japanese. Slowed progress while full time working, but should speed up now I'm part time.
    5. Maybe practice guitar. I used to play it. Idk.
    6. Learn to drive
    7. Learn to cook. (Also found a residential course for cooking which can count as the residential course for my Duke Of Edinburgh)
    8. Finish every single game I've ever bought, or at least play them long enough to justify having bought them. I have about 3-4 I need to finish.
    9. Save money to travel to Japan. Maybe won't happen this year because of covid, but as long as the money is saved, I can go eventually.
    10. Put some focus into the subject I want to study at uni. I want to study creative music technology/sound design. Two things I want to try to do are build a synth (in my case a basic square wave oscillator) and learn or just get familiar with a digital synth used in a DAW. Maybe also try to create my own sound effects for trailers, just anything to keep me involved with the subject.

Gap year is absolutely amazing, tough but amazing, make sure you journal everyday even the most ordinary days. I also made a "First time of ..." list . I'm glad I did but disappointed to not write about how my gap year has changed me after going to Uganda for 6 months. The essence is just do what excites you! You'll meet new friends at uni and 'same ages' start to not matter as much. Enjoy!

Unpaid internships are frowned upon in UK if they last longer than a couple of weeks. You should he paid National Minimum wage. Don’t be taken advantage of.

    • @glorymanunited6675

Agreed. Unpaid internships are only legal if the work you do is considered very educational work, but companies often use free interns for grunt work that doesn’t develop any new skills within interns.

In Germany you could do a practice semester at many unis, if you're not sure what you want do be studying. You'll get the hang of uni things and will have a great time. That would be another idea :) Also, there's the opportunity to volunteer for a year within your local area (or somewhere else in Germany) - called "Freiwilliges soziales Jahr"!

Honestly I know this is an old video but I just wanted to input that you don't have to do all these things or any of these things if you decide to take a gap year. I took one and basically just chilled out for a year. We've been instilled with this idea that you have to be doing something all the time... Since the age of like 4 or 5 we've been in school, we've had exams, deadlines, and commitment and stress. You can decide to take a gap year and just live your life for yourself. I think it's important to take time just for yourself with no real commitment. I think all these ideas that she gave were good but also require time, effort and MONEY. A year out, to just EXIST was such a good recharge for me.

Gap years are great! One has to be aware of the privilege of being able to take a Gap year, but it is such a great opportunity for character development (as cliche as it sounds). Concerning voluntary services I do think one should do at least 6 months, it takes a few months to be properly integrated in your work place. And it is also so important to underline that the person gaining is the volunteer him/herself, not the project or the people concerning it. I spent 12 months in Mexico doing voluntary work and it has taught me more than one year of Uni ever could!

I’ve been working full time since the start of my gap year and I’ve saved up enough money to only go interrailing with discoverEU.. I’ve had to pay for everything myself and also pay rent to my parents. If I had the choice to get up and travel half way across the world I would do it in a heartbeat, but even after working for most of the year, I can’t afford it. I don’t see how most of the travelling things you mentioned are realistic for people who have to support themselves

Even with working in retail full time it would take months even to be able to go on a short trip. I think her circumstances arise from her privilege as an influencer.

I couldn’t recommend camp America enough! My auntie was planning to be a teacher and she spent 4 weeks helping there. Afterwards, she travelled America for 2 weeks. When applying for teaching jobs, it helped her so much with employability. It looks amazing on your CV and she said it gave her amazing experiences and best friends for life!

I graduated high school last year and decided early on I wanted to take a gap year. However, this past year wasn’t like anything I had imagined. I got a job but every time I had to work I got panic attacks. I spend most of this year at home because I was scared I’d get another one. This year wasn’t perfect but I’ve learned soo much and I decided to take another one. I see my next year as a second chance to make the most of this gap year. I still have to accept it fully that I’ll have taken 2(!!) gap years but yeah... staying positive!! I haven’t traveled last year, so maybe I will this year :) it scares the fuck out of me so probably only 1/2 weeks through Europe, but we’ll see. At least I’ve learned to not compare myself (/my gap year) to the others. Thanks for this video! :)

I‘m graduating in two weeks and none of my things for my gap year were sure, I have no positive answers yet and it really stresses me out. I even considered going to Uni although I didn’t want to do that straight away, just because I thought I had no other options. This video really helped me get back to focusing on what I really want and don’t just give up.

I’m in year 11 at the moment and am just now considering this. Why are humans on a constant grind of what’s happening in the next academic year it seems so driven and stress inducing. I don’t need to always be working towards some sort of qualification I think this money driven world just tries to make us think that.

This is so nice! I would definitely recommend doing long term (or short term) volunteering within the European Solidarity Corps programme, I am currently in one in Croatia for almost 9 months now (it's coming to an end soon :( ), and the programme is amazing, you get free plane ticket, food money, pocket money, accomodation and more in exchange for fulltime volunteering (about 30 hours per week), for me it was a lifechanging experience and I would recommend it to anyone, I did it after my high school which was the perfect way of doing something completely different for one year and I loved it!

I didn't plan on going on a gap year (which turned into 3 years lmao) but when I finished my A-levels I didn't even want to go to university. So I did an online A-level in Tourism Management, was an Au Pair in Germany, and worked in a hotel in a ski resort in Austria. If anyone's interested in working a winter season, check out Workaseason - accommodation, meals, travel to the Alps, uniform, skis and lift pass are all PAID for. Plus you get paid monthly. It was only until I was 21 that I felt ready to go to university. This was 4 years ago and I'm due to graduate next month. ;) As someone with barely any money, I'd highly recommend doing a gap year. There are opportunities like being an Au Pair or working in a ski resort (not even as an instructor) where your accommodation and stuff is paid for - you don't always need to pay thousands of £s to do a programme. :)

I know this is unrelated to this video but watching your videos have made me rethink about my life choices and how I did in my GCSE’s in 2017. I wasn’t able to do A Levels because my grades were not high enough and that I was held back a year when I wasn’t supposed to. I felt really disappointed in myself for the past 2 years, don’t get me wrong doing Level 3 BTEC extended diploma Business is enjoyable but I wish I did well in GCSES and got the chance to do A levels. I’m glad that that your videos give me so much motivation and the support you give to your followers is amazing, I wish I found about you earlier then I may have not been in this position of regret really. I would have revised even harder since my predicted grades in GCSE’s was 8/A and most of my grades were C/5.

Jade I dont think you understand how impactful your videos are. Im kinda lost for what to do in my gap year, and in life right now in general. I graduated with the grades I wanted and reached my academic goals. But i failed to tell the girl I've adored for years how I feel. Right now that is overpowering any positive emotion, and all my efforts seem kind of futile. Yet, this video gave my hope and motivation for the upcoming year. Hopefully I can learn from my mistake, and grasp whatever life throws at my in the future.

Doing many of these things now - volunteer work / travel as a combination = long time volunteer for 10 months but also lot of days off to travel; started ballet at 18 and also going to gym classes; solo travelling (even for a couple of days); podcasts; learning the language of my volunteer country... and it's the best. While the work is not always fun, I really have grown so much in the past months, especially because I am being away from my parents & have to do many things on my own

Literally what my plan for my gap year was was to just get a job at some store or whatever, save up some money, and go travel/work abroad/volunteer abroad/anything... Now it’s been 5 months of my gap year, I’ve applied to hundreds of jobs, no replies, updated and improved my CV hundreds of times, still no replies. And I know that the problem is bc I live in Belgium and don’t speak the two official languages (french and dutch), but it’s just frustrating.. I wanna travel so badly, and it’s already been almost half of the year. Oh well I’m definitely not giving up :3 and also I’ve learnt so much during my gap year so far, and I’m so grateful, and content with myself and my life.

This video screams "get out of your house, get out of your COMFORT ZONE, AND SOCIALIZE, AND BE INDEPENDENT" and that makes me nervous lmao
We don't really have the kind of culture here that promotes children to be out there, be independent and like get a part time job asap.. you know things like that. I'm 18 but have no clue how the stuff she mentioned in the video works. I have never done part time jobs. And even our parents (specially ones with daughters) would not allow to travel alone or do charity work alone.
So yeah.. all this inexperience + my low self esteem + hesitation in socialising.. really limits what I can do to just STUDYING and join some dance/martial arts/music etc. classes and going out with friends.
