Also big thing no one talks about are gap years AFTER uni
It’s always grad jobs grad schemes and unrealistic expectations of suddenly knowing what you’re doing and landing your dream job straight away

I'm taking a gap year after. It's super helpful to know I already have my degree so I can come back and work when I'm done exploring. Plus it gives me time to SAVE for it. When you're not making that TH-cam coin, you might need the extra time to save. :)

Smart girl and what a grand adventure! I promise you will NEVER regret taking this gap year. You pegged it about working and saving money to pre-fund your adventure and working along the way. I wish I had taken a gap year. I'm now retired. Every year I try to travel at least three months and every time it's another wonderful experience. You are well prepared for the next phase of your life. Bravissima!

Its interesting that you mention how its normal to take several gap years in scandinavia! Ive always seen that as the norm, and I didnt realise that it isnt the same way in the UK. I just started uni after two gap years and we are a good mix of people both younger and older than me. I honestly dont know how I would have managed in uni if I went right after high school - now i feel so ready!

I took a gap year after I got covid during my fourth year exams and hayfever for two months after it. Since I was a part-time student, I was really disappointed as if it weren't for the illness then I'd have did another year and would have finished by now. During my gap year, I met my boyfriend, moved in with him, tried a corporate job for two weeks then quit, got 13 students to teach piano by self-employment, took my mum on holiday to Spain and Germany, discovered that I now do better with guided meditation rather than the ones with music and attended weekly therapy with a private therapist for 10 months to better my mental health. I also managed to get my 8 tracks mixed and mastered after contacting a pianist I'd always looked up to since I was a teenager. He then also did two remixes of my originals for me and I released all 10 into an album on Bandcamp.

I was thinking about doing a gap year to catch up on a lot of things I felt I was missing out on. Being 18, a lot of my friends already have their drivers license or a job. Some are managing other “adult things” that I feel I’ve been unable to do. I don’t even know what I plan to do if I go to college next year and I feel everything’s in such a rush. I’m scared of failing but I also want to see the world much more before entering another 4 years of school. But I also don’t want to feel left behind. All of a sudden life is just something I’m supposed to know how to handle when in reality I’m so lost and confused. My parents think the idea will just make me lazy but I’m not so sure.

I am from Spain and taking a gap year here is very weird. When we finish high school, we're expected to throw ourselves to uni immediately. Even tough I did not take a gap year I think it has many beneficts. In Spain, the last year of high school is really stressfull and it usally drains everybody. When I started uni, I was not over my last year in high school and I did not enjoy my course. In Spain we feel a lot of pressure to know exactly what we want to do with the rest of our lives since age 15/16 but specially 17/18. A gap year would beneficiate a lot of people. Love the video :)

hii so i'm considering taking a gap year because i have more or less no motivation or real direction for my future. i want to improve on my mental health and take time to mature and learn more adulting terms, and also to potentially try and go full time at my job for the year to save up money. my question is how did it feel after your gap year? did it feel that it was worth it and was the transition to uni less nerving for you>

taking a gap year here in PH is sad. people will start calling you lazy, stupid, a drug addict- the worst, or people will assume that u got pregnant at an early age. when people know you’re not going to college, they will start calling you a “tambay” or a kid that has no future. almost every filipino is like that. but fuck em imma take a gap year ain’t born to impress shit

im taking a gap year before i go to vet school in 2020 and my main goal is to work and save up money so I can give myself the least stressful uni time and the most fun year possible. sometimes i feel under pressure to go on mad adventures in my gap year and be relentlessly busy and although i have some travel plans in mind i can’t help but feel guilty for my desire to just work, go on city trips around Europe, relax and take a break from academia. What’s your POV on chill, calm gap years? Saying this, I 100% want a career break gap year a few years after I graduate to work as a vet abroad which im really excited for too. X

Ramlah Rehan I studied computer science and AI. It was a pretty great experience in terms of traveling and having a better understanding of cultures globally, but it’s pretty exhausting at the same time in terms of having to adapt to society. We learn through seminars (online) where I had about 15 students in my class and my lecturer. The seminars replace a typical universities lectures and are based on active learning, meaning it’s a lot more interactive in which you will be asked questions and to engage every few minutes and to also discuss with the other students about a certain topic and bounce ideas off eachother (this is especially for my course as programming in general is usually a collaborative process involving problem solving and critical thinking). Usually though you’ll have a roommate though so me and it’s common for the students in the seminars to be 2 on one laptop at once which I liked because it can be a bit weird alone. The first year of the degree though is a common/foundation year where you study modules like communications, critical thinking, personal and professional development etc. Minerva focuses a lot more on getting you to critically think and apply said thinking into practical use which really helps in the long run for your own personal and professional development. It can be quite tough to get into Minerva however due to it being so competitive and only wanting high performing students, I got 8 H1’s in my leaving certificate (the equivalent of 8 A* in A levels) and got in luckily. I’m going to be doing my masters this year with Minerva too, there’s a great program they have where you can actually link your masters with your bachelors and go directly into it. It’s pretty great and I’m not sure why people are so suspicious of it, there are some contracts we have to sign about certain information that I’m not permitted to speak on but other than that it’s is safe.

It’s very inspiring to see what you’ve been up to and it really excites me for my own gap year! I do have one question: as you said you’ve had a lot of opportunities over the last year and I can imagine some of them overlapped? In time or in kind of project or travel? How did you choose what you wanted to do? Are there projects or travels that you have not chosen for that you now wish you had? Because I am granted a lot of opportunities right now and I’m gonna have to choose, but I’m afraid to choose the wrong things?
I wish you the best of luck in university! Greetings Anne

I really like this video. However I feel like these days there's alot of pressure on young people to "travel the world" after highschool. And though I do agree that it can be very enriching I also feel like it's not for eveyone. Besides why not travel after college? Make some money for a year and go see everything. Why does it all have to be in your teens?
For me I decided to take a gap year just to work and do whatever i want. Traveling would've been way to much stress for me.

And what is your opinion on gaining experience in the career you want to pursue in a low paying job rather than a reasonable paying job in say a supermarket and then be able to travel during your gap year? hey, I am Indian and I am on my 2 nd gap year because I wasn't able to get a seat in government medical college due to low marks .preparing for it going to give it again for the third time in 2020. I still don't know how to take it like when I look back to my first gap year (the time when I gave exam for 2nd time) because I didn't get the seat so for me, I took the year as waste. so I just want some suggestions on I how can I take this positively. I completed my 12 at 16 I am 18 now. I am also an online student so my whole day spent in the house.

But I’d rather put a lot of effort and be disappointed than not care at all. Of course, I’m typing this on results day.. I hate to be negative but I know I haven’t done as well as I could’ve (because I literally left more than half of each chemistry and each physics paper blank). Unfortunately, I started to care about my GCSEs when it was too late.

I didn't go to uni aged 18, I didn't feel ready, so I took a "gap year" that lasted 3 years haha. I was an Au Pair and then worked in a ski resort - I couldn't afford a normal gap year experience but the jobs I did didn't cost me a thing! Everything was provided: Accommodation, food, lift pass, ski hire, travel from the UK to resort. Even as an Au Pair the accommodation and food was provided for, it was just the flight I had to pay for. So there are definitely options out there for those that don't think they can afford a gap year. :) I went to uni aged 21 and I am so glad I did that because I'd matured a lot over those 3 years of working abroad and could handle deadlines and uni stress a lot better than those that were younger than I was. :)

@@annamason4638 Have a look at the website 'Workaseason'. That's who I went with. Organisations like BUNAC and Oyster Worldwide also do ski seasons but you have to pay a programme fee, whereas with Workaseason you get everything provided for you (travel to/from the UK, accommodation, meals, season lift pass, ski hire etc). I was a Hotel Assistant which is basically Housekeeping and Restaurant service in a hotel, but there are other roles too like Chalet Host, chefs, resort reps, ski reps etc. If you have any other questions, my Instagram is alpinestudies. :)

I'm Swedish and yes, most people here start uni between ages 21-25! I think uni is structured in a totally different way here as well though, you can easily apply for single courses (one term, half a term, many people do this after high school to get a feel of it) and uni is totally free. In a way, I think this makes Swedish students more lazy to start uni, because there are no consequences of putting it off. Wages here are high so working unqualified jobs makes for a pretty good standard of living as well

I personally think when you finish college (if you go) gap years should be mandatory. I took a three year gap year and it was the best thing I ever did. I think 18 year olds need to go out and experience the real world and try lots of things before they commit to one thing. I think going to university with more of an open mind than like Jade said being in the school system. You are kind of ignorant because of the education bubble and gap years allow you to grow and find yourself. I am very passionate about gap years.

Yes I am going this year and I’ve been working for three years as I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was very much pressured by my college to go and I went along with it as I didn’t have a clue. I didn’t get the grades to get into any uni really (lol) but then I did an apprenticeship and got a full time job doing that then this past year I’ve gone back to college and studied a course which allowed me to go to uni. Now I’m off :)

@@georgiajones8263 so you're in your 20's right? Do you feel like you'll be an odd one out, being older than many there. I want to take a two year gap year but I'm nervous about the age gap in uni when socialising, making friends. I know it's not that big a deal but I worry

    • @georgiajones8263
      @georgiajones8263 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

honey_melanin no you are completely justified in feeling the way you do. I’ll be 21 when I go and 24 when I finish. Honestly I have two friends going with me to uni both who are 25. When I went to an introduction day a lot of people were 20+.
I was very anxious like what are the 18 year olds going to say they will think I’m so old and honestly I don’t think they care. I think as a “mature student” which I hate that name because I feel like I am being compared to an age of a cheese you will meet other students your age.
I did find seeing all my friends graduating a bit hard because they are finishing now as I’m starting but I keep reminding myself I did what was best for me and I’m so glad I didn’t follow the crowd and do what everything else was doing.
Follow your heart because you’ll thank yourself. Screw what anyone else thinks :)

I took a gap year two years ago, and it was so worth it. Actually, I wanted to go to uni abroad but I was so stressed out about it, so after choosing the right university and the right country I decided to spend my gap year traveling across it. I met so many new people, learned a language(from B1 to C1 in just one year among native speakers, it was really easy and it was a lot of fun), I found out a lot of new things, got to know other culture and finally I earned some money and saved some for a new academic year , so now I do recommend a gap year to everyone, especially if you doubt what you should do after school. Don’t be afraid of change ❤️
P.S. In my country literally nobody takes a gap year as it is considered as a waste of time, I was the only one from my school who took a gap year, all of my teachers didn’t support me in this and tried to persuade me, but luckily they didn’t succeed
