Exactly what I need... veteran goalie, finishing rehabbing an MCL (thanks for those tips too) and also a goalie coach - adults and kids... and with a rink undergoing renovation a month behind and virus protocols, our 10U travel team is only getting off ice for now. I knew it was inappropriate to be doing workouts with the youngling like I do, so I'm focusing heavily on balance and stability. This helps a ton adding in some flexibility, giving me some boundary lines, and helping me be creative with some movement/thinking drills, keeping it all age appropriate.
This is perfect for my 9 year old goalie (10 in July). He usually plays spring hockey as a skater and this year that was not possible thanks to COVID, then he plays Box lacrosse for the summer and Lacrosse has also been cancelled! Again he plays out for Lacrosse. Thank you for posting!! He's really missing his sports. We got him some Synthetic ice for the basement (only 8'X8') just last week and he is loving being able to get back on his skates and practicing his goalie drills. For that he makes up his own drills which he loves to do along with some drills that he learned from his coaches.
Thank you , my little goalie got out of shape during lock down and now with the beginning of the season he is injured in his knee , I really think this will help while he is healing and no longer on the ice. You speak very well and made this make sense .
If you’re a youth goalie or a parent with one, PLEASE READ THIS.. I was a youth goalie, for years. I started out strong, was good, best around in my age group. When going from age 14 to 15 i got a new coach, one who thought HE knew best how goalies should play. He forced me to start staying upright more, and told me not to drop down unless i HAD to. It completely ruined my game, i never played high-school hockey, and i was never good again because i wasnt playing naturally.. Please, PLEASE if you see a coach making a kid change his style because he thinks he knows best, please stop it IMMEDIATELY. It killed me that i never got to have fun playing goalie again, and never moved on.. Note: This only goes for kids who have been playing the position for years and developed their own style. If they’re a brand new goalie, never played, then a bit of direction is good. But more than anything, the direction SHOULD be, “do whatever comes naturally to stop the puck” cause its different for every kid. Please learn from my mistake of letting that coach ruin hockey for me...
Hey Maria Thank you for this video! My kid is exactly in that age for this specific training (he turned 10 in February). Keep up the excellent work and thank you again for your advices! Greetings from Switzerland
Incredibly helpful! Not a goalie, nor a goalie parent, but a veteran player and coaching my kids and their teams! I love you channel and learn so much that helps me help our becoming goalies and their parents. Love all your content but so glad you focus on the younger players in this!
Perfect! Exactly what we needed while sitting home waiting to be allowed to play again! We’ve been doing a lot of playing outside and being active but I’m excited to have something to work on with my 9 yo son. He was so excited to see a goalie video for kids!
Thanks Maria! Exactly what we have been looking for. Planning on doing this with some of the other great videos you have to get the boy back up to playing condition. 👍
Have fun out there - don't put too much pressure on yourself at a young age. The focus should be on skill development, worry about building strength as a focus when you are 14 or older.
