  • In this episode of Cabin in the Woods, I show you how to install metal standing seam roof in a valley. I also share the valley standing seam trim detail and what works for us. Stay tuned for the next couple videos which will also show more metal roofing details centered around the standing seam valley. There is just too much for one video.

Even slow days are productive days.
I did rigging for precast concrete garages on and off for 10 years, (when I wasn't on a precast job, most likely I was inside at Intel) elevator shafts or stair wells were always slow days. It could take 45 minutes +/- for 1 piece. I both dreaded and looked forward to those days, dreaded because they would be long, slow days, looked forward to them because they were easy days. I could use the extra time to get ahead on other parts. Staging materials & prepping the next few bays.

I put my own standing sam metal roof on about 12 years ago. Some of the methods have changed since then. Nor did I have a sheet metal brake or some of the other fancy tools used in this video. Dont get me wrong, if I had access to such things at the time I would have used the hell out of them. Everything i did was cut and bent by hand. I know from experience that working the valley does take time, but the payback is well worth it. You are going to be looking at that roof for decades. Most homeowners are willing to take that time, but all too often a contractor isnt. To see a contractor take the time and pay attention to detail as was done in this video is rare these days. This is the difference between a true craftsman who takes pride in his work vs a slap it up get paid and move on type of contractor.

I've only done 1 standing seam roof.
    Did it exactly like this
However we added peel and stick then 2 inch styrofoam on top of roof deck, then added 1/2" ply. Then peel and stick again.
    Sound and vapor barrier.
Roof deck was 2 inch tounge and grove. By 4"
    Solid system.

Wow I watched THIRTEEN videos, all immensely enjoyable, just to see you make those valleys. I wanted to see how standing seam roofing is installed. Then at 7:35 you get all shy about if I want to watch the details. Of course I want watch the details! It has been so much fun to watch you build. My only suggestion, is to ask that you post, and tell me where, photos of the completed building. E.g. the garage with the "Man Cave" corner, and floating floor; what did it look like when finished inside? Please, post photos of this when it is finished.
