What a relief! I've been searching everywhere for information and I about to start on my parent's roof. Finally! Finally I have my information as to what underlayment to use and venting and a lot of the necessary tactics to succeed. I usually hate watching videos, but this felt more like binge watching my favorite episodes. Thank you so much for taking all my stress away.
Over 30 years roofing for me. Your thorough, professional and dead on. Great project choice for your excellent edumentary. Yeah, I made the word "edumentary" up, but I am a New Yorker. Everyone knows; that's how we roll. You are "one of the best" without a doubt. Beautiful job, "respect", thanks for sharing. Your pride in yourself and your work is rare and exemplary.
As an avid DIYer I have been looking for a good video on how to instal a metal roof that doesn't look like I did it myself! This is the best hands on install instruction I have come across! You don't rush thru anything and you take the time to explain why you do the little things that make a difference. As the saying goes, anything worth doing is worth doing right! I will surely re-watch these videos before doing my roof over! Thank you and God Bless! And thanks to your wife for lending a hand, many can't be bothered and I appreciate her for that!
Thanks Richard! Appreciate your nice comment. I’m glad this was helpful to you, and good luck with all your future projects. May God bless you as well!
I just finished the 6 video series and it was by far one the best how to videos ever seen. Simple from start to finish and even showed real roof situations and was to fix them. Hats off to you and the wife!
Everyone has already said this, but I have to add that these are the best instructional videos I have ever seen. The created has a great demeanor. The content was so good, this was the first video creator I have ever subscribed to!
These videos of in the field installation are the best I have seen in my 11 years of estimating metal roofing. I really appreciate your attention to detail, and your explanations were down to earth and understandable. Awesome job.
One of the very best "entertaining" videos EVER! Gave me confidence to entertain myself by installing a metal roof on our Colorado home. Loved how you honored your wife and her great contribution to the overall successful project! God be glorified!
It is very obvious that you put a great deal of thought and effort into making your videos. You produced a well edited finished product to post on TH-cam. This is how youtube videos should be done. They are a pleasure to watch. Coincidentally, I am having a new metal roof put on my house right now and your video gave me a great deal of confidence that I did manage to hire a very professional company to do the job. Sometimes I will watch videos not from a DIY perspective but just to know what a professional job should look like as it moves along. Really nice job with these videos.
Thank you so much! It does take a lot of time and effort to put these videos together. Reading comments like yours makes it all worthwhile. Appreciate the support!
Thank you for the informative video. It really helped a lot as I am installing a ridge cap on a 30' garage. It is great when you can find some useful information!
Thankyou so much for all the knowledge I've gained through your 6 pt video series. I'm about to do a roof and was wanting to do it myself but was intimidated by doing metal roofing. Since watching your video I now feel confident on what I need to order and how it should properly be installed. The company you work for should buy your video series for a very handsome price and use it for a how to guide when selling to diy people.
I like these closures. One thing I don’t see on any of these videos is a sweeping of the roof or at least a leaf blower to remove metal shavings. My boss wouldn’t let us leave until we did that every day before leaving job to prevent rust, especially on a white roof.
I wanted to say I’ve seen a ton of videos due to the fact that I recently bought 25 panels of galvanized sheets(3x17)and 33 painted panels of wall siding I’m gonna use some on my 33x15 warehouse and some on my 55x32 double wide mobile home (while we went to Tennessee to visit family we haven’t seen in yrs someone vandalized my home severely busting my skylight as well as basically anything they could destroy)so it’s taken me yrs just to get my head wrapped around the scope of work I’ve got to do now staying with my mother(myself and 3 kids)I’m a single father and when people offer to help it’s never the right day or time etc so I’m one man doing so many projects I cannot keep track and very overwhelmed tbh,But you are the only person on TH-cam that makes videos that act show how this is done in a way that is understandable for a guy who’s quite honestly a little nervous about doing such a project I do not have enough money to pay a company to come install this material that I purchased for a great price I know it’s far too much information but I think it serves to at least show you how incredibly valuable what you’ve produced (in your videos)can give someone like me hope that I have a shot at making this a reality,I’m not even trying to blast of content makers on here just sayin that by comparison your videos took me from going My God I’ll never be able to do this,To thinking ok calm down and follow your instruction!!!So I guess I’m trying to say how much I appreciate not only your skill and commitment to the work you do but also the gratitude for how you explain and set an example that’s something someone with no knowledge of this can actually learn from and apply in hopes of having similar success!!!So wish me luck and Thank You for sharing something that means so very much in someone’s life that you’ve never even met!!!I hope all is well with you and your family!!!
Hey sorry to be a pain but wanted to ask where the best place to buy the ridge cap and the Brillo stuff u used to keep bugs out?Thank You in advance and sorry my previous message I put so much unnecessary information in....Thanks again
Great videos. I think I will watch again before doing my 16x24 barn roof. Already got the lean to roof done with help. These 6 videos helped a lot. Thanks 👍
Very instructive. Thanks! It surprises me a bit that both ends of the ridge cap are left open, except for the foam. Seems like it would be sufficient to prevent rain from blowing in.

Thank you Paul! I definitely need to put up some more content. Finding the time to do it has been hard but hope to have some more up soon! Appreciate your support!
I would've given you 10 thumbs up if I could. #1 on the hit parade, kudos for a short introduction. Many of us that spend a lotta time watching youtube vids don't exactly enjoy long, time wasting and many a times tacky intros. Content is more important. I jumped through all the six vids just to pick what I most wanted to know and you get an A+ on that. #2 you pack all that content in every minute of your vids in a natural way, like effortlessly. Yes you are a natural. I'm going with same classic rib metal over my old shingle roof but as a 'buying time' measure because I'll have to replace in the future lotsa rotted deck and maybe more. But I'm going with 1x4's on the diagonal as an idea that I picked from Mat Risinger to allow ventilation all the way as I live in SoFlo. It does make screwing on a grid pattern impossible. But I'm learning to live with it. The other thing is I could not settle for the manufacturer's recommendation of screwing it down on the flat part or the ridge of the panel, as many other folk stand for in the blogs I read. For now I screwed the back of my roof on the flat and the front on the ridge of the panel... not a great idea I know, but am experimenting.
very well narrated! very clear easily understandable instructions. i think asphalt roofing shingles should be a thing of the past. asphalt roofing shingles are labor intensive, crude and highly flammable. thanks for the videos !
Thanks for let other people know this job. I do asphalt re-roofs and have a metal roof to do soon. With this videos I have much better knowledge thanks to you. Really appreciate what you do. Wonder how much to charge per sq? Im just charging for labor! The roof im doing is similar to the roof you did on your videos. Thanks and good job.
Thank you Miguel! I never did charge by the square like you do with shingles so I really don’t know what it would come out to. The thing with metal is both the labor and material price can vary quite a bit if the roof has valleys, hips, sidewall, endwall, or dormers vs a flat roof. I always figured my materials then estimated my labor based on how long I thought it would take. I know it’s not the easiest way to do it but as you gain experience it gets easier. Thanks for watching!
Unbelievably good job explaining this project. I'm building my wife our 12x32 foot tiny home with a single pitch roof with eaves on all sides with a 4:12 pitch. Maybe you can direct me to a great explanation of how to vent this roof. Or better yet, how bout you make one :) Waiting patiently in Texas. Thank you.
Thanks Brian! Since your roof has no ridge like this one, best thing to do is to use vented soffit for the eaves on all 4 sides. If you plan on insulating the rafters, I would staple a continuous row of styrofoam baffles the entire length of the roof between each rafter before installing insulation. Hope this helps.
Best how to video I've seen on installing metal roofing. Lots of details that only come from experience. Question: I have a home in Colorado that can have 5 feet of snow on the existing asphalt shingle roof which creates ice dams. Any extra considerations for installing a metal roof in these conditions? I'll probably go with hidden fastener 16" snap panels.
Thank you! Wow, that’s a lot of snow! I don’t have any experience dealing with that much snow or ice dams but one thing I would recommend is snow guards to keep the snow from sliding off and taking your gutters with it. Some very heavy duty snow guards. I would talk to your local metal roof expert or your local metal supplier and see what their recommendations are. Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Some areas with high snow require an engineer to sign off on the design. Basically to make sure the roof panels are designed for the load. All manufactures will have allowable live loads which are usually presented in a table with roof panel gauge vs fastener spacing.
My cell phone won't work in my insulated pole barn. Will putting a metal roof on house cause reception issues? It works in house now but signal is a little weak
Fantastic videos! Will use your tricks and tips to put a metal roof on my house. Question - my house (older hip roof) has a series of roof vents now. Can I simply cover these openings with plywood and membrane and cut the vent strip along the spine of the roof instead? Thanks!
Thank you! I always remove all old vents and install ridge vents with the new metal roof. With a hip roof it is a bit trickier though since the top ridge (spine) doesn’t run along the entire length of the house because of the hips coming up from each corner. I would say if your top (vented) ridge is at leas 30% of the entire building length it should provide adequate ventilation.
Thank you! I purchased all my supplies form a local metal roofing supplier. They carry these in stock. They are called vented foam closures. See if you have a metal roofing supplier in your area. If not check the big box stores. I believe I left a link to some in an earlier reply to a comment, asking the same question.
did you use 2-inch screws on the roof? i build 'pole-barns' over in kansas/ok/tx area and i've been complaining for 10 years about how our guys never order 2 inch screws for ridge cap at least, especially on insulated buildings, 1.5 inch just don't catch enough. anyway, i need to do a job just like this here soon and was curious as to what size screws you ordered for metal, and trim.
Great information, I was wondering if you have a video that show the overlapping of the ridge cap better, do you use and adhesive on the overlap or any extra screws? My roof is 13 feet long, and I'm wondering where I should overlap it at? I can only by 10 ft sections from menards.
I usually overlap at least a foot. I always try to make my laps lay nice a tight and don’t use caulking but it wouldn’t hurt to lay a bead on the under piece about midway in the 12” overlap.
Thanks much for the work on this series. I know it took time and effort and I appreciate it. One question...I'm doing mine in a copper metallic painted metal. I'm very worried about having to walk on it and getting it all scratched up. I'm trying to think through the process and plan so it will keep me off of it as much as possible but it seems it'd be down right impossible in some spots. Also, my roof is a 6:12 pitch and I'm not overly fond of heights, though I'm using fall protection. Any tips or thoughts to put my mind at ease walking on and moving that copper metallic metal?
I appreciate the recognition of how much time it takes to put videos together, especially for an amateur. Your copper roof, is it the standard paint like the other colors from your metal supplier? If so, walking on it is the least of your worries as far as scratching it unless you have mud/dirt on your shoe. You are way more apt to scratch it during handling. Main thing I would recommend is to wear very clean shoes with slip resistant soles. A good option to keep them clean is to have pair of boots to slip on when on the ground and keeping the shoes on the roof. Even a little bit of dust on the shoe sole can cause a slip. I can walk an 8/12 pitch with the sketcher tennis shoe if kept clean. Good luck!
Question, I have a new to me metal roof where the ridge cap needs to be replace as the previous owner installed two different styles. They used #14x1.5 screws to fasten the ridge cap. My new pieces of ridge cap don't have screw holes in them. I have been told to use a size #17 'rescue' screw for these in the ZXL style. Do I need to pre drill the new ridge cap pieces?
No need to pre drill the ridge cap. ZXL are really good screws and should have great self tapping abilities. Just try to keep them directly on top of the rib and straight along the ridge cap.
Finished the series very great info for me getting ready to do a metal roof....just one question if someone would have a bad or soft spot on the shingle roof would you replace that area of decking and just reuse the old shingles in that area before putting the metal on or would you just put the metal on on top of it. Thanks again for all your help
Thank you. I would either relay the old shingles or get a cheap bundle of shingles an lay it back in. If you don’t you will definitely see a low spot after the metal is installed. Or tear all the other shingles off. Good luck!
If there are no stones in the rubber roof then you could probably get by without it but you might get some condensation between the metal and rubber. Personally I always use an underlayment. A reflective vapor barrier like the one I used could help keep the porch cooler.
@@MT_Homes Thank You. On the note of keeping the area cooler, this roof is over a two bedroom dormer, it is a 2/12 pitch and not visible from the ground, would putting a white roof be advisable over brown? What company do you order you materials through?
Welcome, and yes white or lighter colored roofs reflect the heat better than darker colors do. I get my materials through a local metal supplier. Much better than big box stores.
What kind of paint or finish is on your metal? Mine is a smooth paint, so it's slippery without wearing shoes with a slip resistant sole. I also bought some slip resistant knee pads. The front side of the knee pads that rest on the metal doesn't slip, but the back side slides against my jeans, so I'm constantly having to slide them back into place. My roof is only a 4/12 pitch, but I don't feel safe without having a rope attached to my belt, in case I would start sliding. Also, I was starting to walk across the roof to go back and put more screws in the metal to secure it better to the roof. I started slipping even though I was wearing my slip resistant shoes. I determined it was the dust on the metal that was sticking to the soles of my shoes and causing me to start slipping. I'm hoping once the newness wears off of the paint, it will be easier to walk on.
It’s a newer paint style the manufacturer came out with called “crinkle” black. It still gets slippery if I get dust on it. The best thing I’ve found for walking on metal is skecher tennis shoes like these > www.skechers.com/en-us/style/51268/vigor-2-0-the-beard
Love the quality work and tips. Stating mine now. I have three sections on staggered roof. One main in the center and much smaller roof lines on each side. So do I need to vent all three or can I just cut out Vinton the main center one?
HELP!!! I have a metal roof..can I install a rain diverter on one side of my porch corner?? The rain is hitting a small area of a dog ramp and mildewing the step...which need sealed and stained anyway...wonder if I'll need the rain diverter after that?? Thanks??
@@MT_Homes Thanks, no not a gutter...have those all around the house... it's actually called a "rain diverter" that you can slip under a normal shingled roof but not sure I can do this on a metal roof. But thanks👍👍
This is the most in depth how to I have ever seen for roof install. The only question is cost. How much did this cost in materials if you dont mind me asking. Thanks for the video.

If you used 1x4 strips instead on the bubble wrap, would everything basically work just the same?
Yea, pretty much. Although I would still install a vapor barrier on top of the 1x4’s before installing metal.

New viewer, from fl.your amazing. I'll keep watching.
Thanks for the terrific vid.
Thank you! Appreciate the support!
Great video DIY series. I learned a lot.
Thank you!
Its usefull video 🙏🙏🙏🙏thanks from india ( tamil nadu)
Thank you C. J! I really appreciate the nice comment. Good luck with your roof. Thanks for watching!
great job. you should be an instructor. I'll rewatch 3-4 times and then I'm going to re roof my house with metal. thanks again.
Thank you! I appreciate that. Good luck!
Watched all 6 videos, excellent job !
you did a great job of explaining , the roof looks nice .
Thank you Ron!
very well narrated! very clear easily understandable instructions. i think asphalt roofing shingles should be a thing of the past. asphalt roofing shingles are labor intensive, crude and highly flammable. thanks for the videos !
Thank you! Amen to that! I haven’t done a shingle roof in at least 10 years.
@@MT_Homes thank you for your answer Sr. I will be following now on.
any - you tube - on industrial roofing installation with thicker material - what i have seen is excellent - thanks
Unfortunately I only have experience in residential. I’m sure there are other videos on TH-cam here that would be helpful to you. Thanks for watching?
This was great. Thanks!
first class work what drill you use for roofing screws metal and wood thanks in advance
Awesome clean job. I would much rather use 2.5” long screws on ridge cap vented or not and bend the ends but good video overall.
My cell phone won't work in my insulated pole barn. Will putting a metal roof on house cause reception issues? It works in house now but signal is a little weak
Honestly, I don’t know. My guess is it will affect it a little bit.
Really enjoyed your videos and picked up a few new things too :) Subscribed.
Awesome! Thanks for the support!
Love your work
great videos man.learned alot.layed many sqaure of shingle .
Thanks TR!
@@MT_Homes Awesome! Thanks again and keep up the great work!
You need to put a piece of butyl tape between the ridge and panel high point where you are putting the ridge screws.🧐🧐🧐🧐
Love your video, I am currently doing my roof in metal and would like to know where I can get those foam closures you are using.
Thank you! I purchased all my supplies form a local metal roofing supplier. They carry these in stock. They are called vented foam closures. See if you have a metal roofing supplier in your area. If not check the big box stores. I believe I left a link to some in an earlier reply to a comment, asking the same question.
Looks great! Great job
Thanks Michael!
would you cut the cap ends to hide the opening at the end.
Excellent video thanks 🇨🇮👍
Thank you!
Great job, guys
Thank you!
why are you using a drill and then you use the hex impact gun🤔🤔..which one should I use...I'm planning to do the same procedure 👍
did you use 2-inch screws on the roof? i build 'pole-barns' over in kansas/ok/tx area and i've been complaining for 10 years about how our guys never order 2 inch screws for ridge cap at least, especially on insulated buildings, 1.5 inch just don't catch enough. anyway, i need to do a job just like this here soon and was curious as to what size screws you ordered for metal, and trim.
I used 2” screws for the roof metal and
2 1/2” screws for the ridge cap.
Great job! Very thorough and taught very well. Thank you!
Thank you! Appreciate your support!
@@MT_Homes Great information thanks for the help.
Looks great.
Excellent job
How would you go about cutting out for an electrical hydro post ?
Appreciate the video, I'm about to have this done one way or the other and the way you're doing things seems to be my idea of the right way.
Thank you Good Friend! Everybody had their version of the best way to do it and this is mine. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, great demonstration.
excellent idea.. god bless sir
Good luck!
Curious. Don’t you fold the end of the ridge cap?
Im putting my metal roof over a torchdown rubber roof. do I need an underlay material?
Great job!
Great job on the Roof. Curious as to whether customers complain about not lining up the corrugated sections in the valley.
From the ground it would be hard to tell on a 4/12 pitch. On a steeper roof you might notice it but I’ve never had anybody mention that.
@@MT_Homes trie. Keep up the good work!
Love the quality work and tips. Stating mine now. I have three sections on staggered roof. One main in the center and much smaller roof lines on each side. So do I need to vent all three or can I just cut out Vinton the main center one?
Vent all 3
nice job! well done!
Can you please do a valley cut of the panels ?

HELP!!! I have a metal roof..can I install a rain diverter on one side of my porch corner?? The rain is hitting a small area of a dog ramp and mildewing the step...which need sealed and stained anyway...wonder if I'll need the rain diverter after that?? Thanks??
If you’re talking about gutter, I would recommend installing it the entire length of the porch along with downspouts.
@@MT_Homes Thanks, no not a gutter...have those all around the house... it's actually called a "rain diverter" that you can slip under a normal shingled roof but not sure I can do this on a metal roof. But thanks👍👍
My friend whats the way you put piping on this roof?

Thanks for the series! Have to do my garage and your vids have been very helpful!
Thank you! Appreciate the support!
This is the most in depth how to I have ever seen for roof install. The only question is cost. How much did this cost in materials if you dont mind me asking. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. Altogether I had right at $3500 in materials for this roof, (1200 sq ft house) including the underlayment. Thanks for watching!
