I must've played Ghostbusters II as a kid... I only remember having a good time driving the car & going into sewers (I think?), but after watching this video, it definitely was NOT whatever that garbage on NES was. Now I just want to go back & find it.
I remember my brother when he was growing up, he had a neighbor who had Ghostbusters on the SmS and he had it for the NES. And he would always go over and play this on his neighbors SMS cause of how much better it was. All the NES version did was piss him off and caused him to break his TV lol
I recently saw Ray Parker Jr. on a rerun of Gimme a Break. It had a great premise and was very funny. Yes, I am out of touch. And they did get a "Who you gonna call?" joke in there. Anyway, imagine if saving gasoline was that easy in real life? I had the Master System game as a kid. Somehow, I managed to figure most of it out and did enjoy it. I revisited it back in 2017 and still enjoyed it, as I settled back into it like no time had passed at all. I remembered everything within a few minutes. I'm not going to say it's good or bad, I'm fine with either assessment, but it's playable and I'm surprised I figured so much out so young. It's essential to know what the items in the shop do and how to use them. You can go with cheaper items to save money but do much more driving, or get the better stuff to save from making as many trips back to HQ. There's also an item that can prevent Stay Puft from destroying the buildings near the end of phase one. And speaking of Stay Puft, getting by him in phase two is pretty easy. You just need to approach the door from the side and time his jumping. Phase three with the stairs was always super tough, though I could get past it now and then as a kid when I was six or seven. There's definitely some luck involved. I never did beat Gozer/Gorza as a kid. I also never beat Bubsy! I was expecting to see Bubsy in this video and was starting to wonder about that as it got toward the end. Anyway, I enjoyed watching.
I am still holding out hope for a Gex 4 or remastered trilogy after 20 years...also want to see Ristar as something other than a flag-holder in a Sonic racing spinoff sometime.
Go back and look at the moons out of the windows of the stairs on the SMS. Each one is in a different position. Its not 3 moons, its the same moon being see out of different floors. That was how much detail they put in that there.
With the stairs glitch/hidden secret the NES game is much easier to play and beat. You can also beat the final boss by moving the screen up and down, it takes forever. But winning the funist version to play for me, is NES version.
Wow, i remember commenting on this channel when that Console Wars documentary came out, and now the TH-cam algorithm has brought me back here to stay. Great video
The SMS version is an underrated gem. There. I said it. Deal with me dawg! And thank you for saying on the SMS system version you can fire at an angle and straight on the stairwell level. James said you can only fire at an angle and never corrected it in his video.
Agreed! It's also a PAL optimised game, so the oval shaped title screen, to fast theme music and some gameplay awkwardness like speed hopping stay puft is fixed when playing on a PAL machine
Oh cool; you're doing NES vs Master System games now as well. Your sketches continue to be comedy gold, particularly this one, and Dan's defeatism as Pat showed off the NES version's horrible graphics was hilarious.
NES version is the worst, without a doubt. SMS version has its fair share of problems, but the NES version is worse. You guys should live stream the Sega Genesis version. That one is fun. "The Great Circus Mystery starring Mickey and Minnie" is next.
Not in the game. The people who made the game obviously didn't watch the movie, lol. But yeah Zuul was the dog that possessed Sigourney Weaver. Gozer was the...thing that turned into Stay Puft.
I know as Jersey guys we're not as used to the whole gas thing, since we don't have to pump our own - but it would help if you remembered to fill up before chasing down the restless dead. Happy Halloween, and thanks for the great video!
I'm surprised that the bad ending of the NES Ghostbusters game has better spelling and grammar compared to the real ending. Also, the stairs level in the NES game is only beatable with the turbo controller and a Game Genie. Thank God we have Ghostbusters: The Video Game (AKA the game that is like the third movie).
You forget that Ghostbusters afterlife counts as a third movie forcing on new heroes. So the video game is a 2.5 version after the 2nd Ghostbusters movie because you're playing the rookie Ghostbusters not the 4 main characters.
Yo Man Just dropped here to say we all love this stuff please keep it up we love your passion. I am an avid retro gamer and I love you guyss banter and videos!
happy halloween guys, gonna enjoy this episode and just in time and the right length since it will be lights out in around 30 minutes, so this will be time well spent.
Another awesome video guys! I agree that the Sega version is better but sadly, I only had the inferior NES game growing up. Brings back some good memories though. Here are a few more ideas for games you can compare: Chuck Rock Death and Return of Superman The Incredible Hulk Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures Aahhh! Real Monsters Rock ‘n Roll Racing Can’t wait for the next one!
I unironically loved the SMS version. The item and car variety was problably what caused my obsession in builds for the rest of my life. The yellow car was the most balanced for instance while the Ecto-1 was the second slowest but had the most cargo space. The first or fresh playthrough was also something to consider since with low money you had to choose between getting a bad car or the bare essential items. The stairs level was very brutal though, sometimes even after you get good at it. The whole level is a bit janky and some enemies can really bring the cheese (usually on a flying plate to your face)
It was pretty obvious for those who knew both these games. While I think SMS version is better, for some reason NES version looks and feels appealing for me. I guess it's because Atari 2600 had some part in my childhood so the graphics and overall style just works for me. One little trivia rarely anyone mention is in NES version you can open doors on stairs screen. I don't remember full details, but those doors can either have nothing in them, can give you a bonus or an item (not sure about it) and can contain a ghost that will one hit kill your party.
In the famicom version the ending is a black screen with some glitch Japanese symbols and the shop is called “shop workss” and there’s 2 (sometimes 3) cars on the driving section and the ghost catching section last less than the nes version.
Before I watched the video: "Oh, this is an easy win for Sega, the NES game was super terrible" 3 minutes in: "Oh, you're doing one of those 'worst game' videos. This will be an easy 'win' for NES then" End of video: "Yep"
I was expecting for this episode! I had the Master System version as a kid and I hadn't a clue on how to play that game! Maybe after the console wars episode I might learn how to play it! It was so frustrating roaming on the map without having a clue on how to make the game starts and enjoy some ghost busting!
Regarding the SMS version, when entering ZUUL you need to enter from the left or the right side of Stay Puff, not underneath...of course you would know that IF YOU READ THE MANUAL! It explicitly tells you not to try and go between his legs.
People tend to forget these games were ports of the Atari 2600 version which explains the simple gameplay. I actually enjoy playing through the NES version (so long as I have a turbo controller).

As a big Ghostbusters fan, this was a great episode to watch. And these games suck. I was so sad when I experienced the NES game as a kid.
By the way, the worst part of the final boss in the NES version is, when you're switching screens, the boss regains all of his health.
Oh, so that explains why it takes forever.
I did not know that. That makes it even worse
That is the worst fatal flaw I have ever heard. I'll take the isometric bullet hell of SMS, thank you.

Great video. Also like the fact you met James Rolfe in the picture you showed.
Oh man, I love the "worst game" episodes. They're great! Happy Halloween guys!
Happy Halloween!
Ghostbusters is a good movie to watch on Halloween.
Tying the ghosts of unused video game characters into the review was awesome 😆
I love the increasingly delayed reactions for "What? That's it! Are we *doing* this??!" 🤣
That clip of Dan doing karaoke made my day lmao
Now I have So Watchya Want stuck in my head.
So whacha whacha..whacha want!
Was that Crystal Quinn in the back?
New Ghostbusters II is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than the original NES blandness.
and also better then the Activision-published Ghostbusters II game for the NES
I must've played Ghostbusters II as a kid... I only remember having a good time driving the car & going into sewers (I think?), but after watching this video, it definitely was NOT whatever that garbage on NES was. Now I just want to go back & find it.
Sega Master System for the win! You know it.
In this case it's more of a "Which version of this terrible game is slightly less terrible?"
I remember my brother when he was growing up, he had a neighbor who had Ghostbusters on the SmS and he had it for the NES. And he would always go over and play this on his neighbors SMS cause of how much better it was. All the NES version did was piss him off and caused him to break his TV lol
I love you guys fighting over “who is worse” like it’s a win 🥇 💩 🥇
OFFICER PASTRAMI!!!!!!! Thanks guys for the puppets.
Seeing all those dead franchises as ghosts at the end made my heart ache.
I am still holding out hope for a Gex 4 or remastered trilogy after 20 years...also want to see Ristar as something other than a flag-holder in a Sonic racing spinoff sometime.
Vectorman 😢
Love these 8 bit wars 😀
This channel never disappoints. Love it.
Go back and look at the moons out of the windows of the stairs on the SMS. Each one is in a different position. Its not 3 moons, its the same moon being see out of different floors. That was how much detail they put in that there.
See a new Console Wars video _"What, that's it, am I watching this!"_
So happy to see a new episode! The opening theme has only been stuck in my head the last week
Conglaturations with this episode.
As a fan of Bubsy (and yes, I know he's terrible lol) I loved that he was the final boss. Hope to see more 8-bit battles! You guys are the best!
"Conglaturations!
You have completed a great game!" 🤣
"Zuul
Someone left a copy of Zuul for the Sega Genesis!"
Omg hahahahahaha I lost it there. That was a great joke.
Thank you!
Best was the "mother puss bucket" reply. My favorite line to quote from the movie.
3:30 - "Hey, I understood that reference!" XD
Also, the NES game was first released in Japan in 1986. So it is the new oldest game you’ve looked at so far.
That explains a lot, it looked way too awful and plain for a 1988 release
The next episode's gonna be The Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey & Minnie
With the stairs glitch/hidden secret the NES game is much easier to play and beat. You can also beat the final boss by moving the screen up and down, it takes forever. But winning the funist version to play for me, is NES version.
Awesome review and just in time for the new one coming up in November.
Wow, i remember commenting on this channel when that Console Wars documentary came out, and now the TH-cam algorithm has brought me back here to stay. Great video
Awesome! Welcome back!
@@mikeyjnz Never knew that. Thanks for the info!
What was released for the Mega Drive was not a version of this but more like a totally different game.
@@WeskerSega I know. It is still a Ghostbuster game.
@@jtomally9681 Yeah, but they can't do a proper Console Wars for that one. More like simply streaming it for fun.
@@WeskerSega I didn't say anything about a 'Console Wars' with it. I requested them to live stream it sometime.
Isn’t the final boss name “Gozer the Gozerian” Zull is the gatekeeper.
Not in the game. The people who made the game obviously didn't watch the movie, lol. But yeah Zuul was the dog that possessed Sigourney Weaver. Gozer was the...thing that turned into Stay Puft.
*Gorza the Gorzarian.*
@@lnsflare1 Gorza is Gozer’s Mexican cousin
Thank you guys, for this new video. At first glance, I did know the NES version was the worst.
Thank you for the amazing karaoke clip!
I'm still waiting to see the SNES stomp the Genesis to see which version of Rock N' Roll Racing is better!
I know as Jersey guys we're not as used to the whole gas thing, since we don't have to pump our own - but it would help if you remembered to fill up before chasing down the restless dead.
Happy Halloween, and thanks for the great video!
You lazy New Jersey-ians. Why don't you and Oregon hook up, well actually Oregon changed that a few years ago.
Pump my own gas? What am I? A peasant? Glad you enjoyed the video.
great video, never even knew the SMS version had slimer hahaha. oh and props for the beastie boys karaoke lol
Watching again as the entertainment you guys provide is just great fun how on earth do you only have 62k subscribers. It's a crime
Binging the halloween playlist! That Zool joke is so funny now that you guys have finally reviewed it!
I haven’t thought about that lol
That Thumbnail was pretty badass!!! 👍👍👍
If I remember correctly in the NES version don't the doors have a chance to heal you?
That's one of the best episodes you guys had made, really great quality, thanks for all the entertainment you guys had provide for us all this time!!!
Glad you liked it!
Making the actual canon GB, GB II, GB The Video Game, and GB Afterlife?
You forget that Ghostbusters afterlife counts as a third movie forcing on new heroes. So the video game is a 2.5 version after the 2nd Ghostbusters movie because you're playing the rookie Ghostbusters not the 4 main characters.
@@Twilight17Petkoton I'm taking into reference that the movie has not been released yet.
@@FlashaniMan247 Were texting not talking can you get it right it comments means texting not talking.
Yo Man Just dropped here to say we all love this stuff please keep it up we love your passion. I am an avid retro gamer and I love you guyss banter and videos!
I'd like to see Test Drive II: The Duel at some point.
"I'm coming to join you Elizabeth!" 🤣🤣
So nice.....thanks guys.
happy halloween guys, gonna enjoy this episode and just in time and the right length since it will be lights out in around 30 minutes, so this will be time well spent.
Another awesome video guys! I agree that the Sega version is better but sadly, I only had the inferior NES game growing up. Brings back some good memories though. Here are a few more ideas for games you can compare:
Chuck Rock
Death and Return of Superman
The Incredible Hulk
Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures
Aahhh! Real Monsters
Rock ‘n Roll Racing
Can’t wait for the next one!
Damnit I missed the puppets
On the topic of sequels, who'd like to see Jurassic Park Rampage Edition (Sega) vs Jurasic Park 2 The Choas Continues (Snes)
Love the "which ones worse" videos. Unique competition.
*takes deep breathe* PUPPETS!!!!! *cough, cough* good job guys, check yall at the next livestream
The “Bestin makes me feel good” sealed the deal
The NES stairs level isn't that difficult. There are a couple of floors which you can use the other button to open the doors and refill your health.
Love the touch of the ghosts being dead videogame mascots.
That was fun
Dan rapping to "So What'cha Want" by The Beastie Boys was something I didn't realize I needed to see in my lifetime. 🤣
Its my go to karaoke jam!
12:02 My guess is they were trying to emulate the voices of the ''Ghostbusters'' theme song's backup singers.
Glad you talked about the stairs. Those stairs are such a pain
In the famicom version the ending is a black screen with some glitch Japanese symbols and the shop is called “shop workss” and there’s 2 (sometimes 3) cars on the driving section and the ghost catching section last less than the nes version.
Ghostbusters for NES and SMS?
Now I'm thinking of the Angry Video Game Nerd 🤣 - he tested BOTH ports
+TheJetJONES As well as the Atari 2600 version.
Back when he would actually play the game and write episodes.
Before I watched the video: "Oh, this is an easy win for Sega, the NES game was super terrible"
3 minutes in: "Oh, you're doing one of those 'worst game' videos. This will be an easy 'win' for NES then"
End of video: "Yep"
This channel is legendary.
Keep up the fun boys!
You guys Rock! Hello Sega Master System! Hello Tec Toy! 🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you for this, guys!
Very Good episode guys.Banjo is in Smash.
DS-1 catches ghosts? Damn Boss stuff always works!
Another great video! I had the NES version as a kid and, well, it's not fun. If only North America got the HAL Ghostbusters II...
I was expecting for this episode! I had the Master System version as a kid and I hadn't a clue on how to play that game!
Maybe after the console wars episode I might learn how to play it!
It was so frustrating roaming on the map without having a clue on how to make the game starts and enjoy some ghost busting!
This is a fun episode of Console wars and you guys do entertaining videos and I enjoy watching them
I like y'all arguing over which games is worse. Brings a different energy
Regarding the SMS version, when entering ZUUL you need to enter from the left or the right side of Stay Puff, not underneath...of course you would know that IF YOU READ THE MANUAL! It explicitly tells you not to try and go between his legs.
I had this game on the 64, I loved it, OK it's not great, but as a kid, I still loved it.
I can't wait to watch the episode, u guys rock!
08:28 I had the pleasure of seeing this live lol. Awesome video guys!
THIS! THIS is the one we've all waited for!!!! Love it guys!
Happy Halloween guys ! Enjoyed this episode !
Happy Halloween!
Based on the images from the last video, I was thinking the clue was Buster Wolf and was expecting a fatal fury sequel review.
People tend to forget these games were ports of the Atari 2600 version which explains the simple gameplay. I actually enjoy playing through the NES version (so long as I have a turbo controller).
I bet the button pressing to get up the steps is a nod to how exhausting it was for them in the movie. Its a funny scene. Good idea on paper
